Methods: The methods of compilation, analysis and synthesis were used. We used the compilation method to summarize the theme based on available literature. The method of analysis was used to understand concepts closely related to fair play as formalism and the method of synthesis to understand the whole theme through the synthesis of the explained parts. Furthermore, we used the method of comparison, for comparing fair play as formalism with other concepts of fair play. Results: The theme of fair play and its relationship to rules was explained. Playing fair : the rhetorical limits of liberalism in women's sport at the University of Texas, 1927-1992

Bagley, Meredith M. 08 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation situates the emergence of women’s intercollegiate sport at the University of Texas from 1927-1992 within the inherent tensions within liberal feminism regarding difference and equality. Specifically, it examines how the rhetoric of fair play functions as a resource for both resistance and social control. The rhetoric of fair play refers to a set of debates and discussions over the structure and meaning of competitive sport. The project proposes three tensions within fair play rhetoric: Discipline or Freedom, Rules as Control or Transformation, and the Universal or Political Athlete. Drawing upon the theoretical resources of liberal, radical and materialist feminism, as well as the cultural theory of Michel Foucault and Raymond Williams, the project argues that values of fairness and meritocracy within sport function dialectically to both empower demands for social change and to extend preexisting hierarchies. A number of questions guided this project: What social norms are at stake during sport competitions? How does fair play rhetoric uphold or challenge these norms? On what basis does fair play rhetoric challenge status quo social conditions? On what basis does it uphold them? And finally, how do the assumptions behind various usages of fair play rhetoric enable and limit their effects on society? Three case studies demonstrate how consecutive women’s sport administrators at Texas used claims to fair play to negotiate the dialectic tension of transcendent claims to sport identity and particular attachments to gender within women’s involvement in sport. Rhetorical tactics shifted from an invocation of sport’s public welfare benefits to political activism on behalf of women’s right to compete at sport. The project sets these varied tactics of sport advocacy within broader contexts of first wave feminism, interwar period Progressivism, social transformations of World War II, Civil Rights activism, and second wave feminism of the 1970s, culminating in the passage of Title IX. The dissertation concludes that the rhetoric of fair play exists within sport, and beyond, as a powerful form of discourse that can be wielded for social control or challenge. What is considered “playing fair” may change with time and perspective but the stakes remain high and thus merit scholarly attention. / text

Heidrich, Silvia Bertossi 11 August 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:25:34Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Silvia Bertossi Heidrich.pdf: 1255516 bytes, checksum: 7959c9fbe9de5258bf8504345ebe7cb9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-11 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This is a phenomenographic study that aimed to map and understand the variations in the conception of Fair Play of a group of managers working in an organization that has a Fair Play policy as a general guideline. The intention was to identify and analyze the associated competences with each conception, considering the managers´experiences. The research was conducted in a Swedish multinational company, founded in 1862. According to its history since that date, the business is conducted through a close relationship with customers, which was sustained over the years by the sense of Fair Play. Theories and main authors that have underpinned this research were: Marton, to address Phenomenography; Sandberg, to study competences in the interpretive/ phenomenographic view; Commans, Macauley and Lawton to discuss Fair Play in organizations. Thus, it was adopted a qualitative / interpretive perspective which was developed according to the premisses of Phenomenography method. The strategy to build up the data was based in document analysis and interviews with managers in depth, all managers working in leadership position for at least one year. As main results, the survey revealed that there are four central ways of conceiving Fair Play: as rules, transparency, justice and principles. Each of these conceptions still have sub-variations that give different meanings to the conceive of rules, transparency, justice and principle. The managers competences represent the materialization of these conceptions. Finally, the study reinforces the idea that understanding the differences in the conceptions can be a way to contribute and advance the initiatives and practices for developing competences in Fair Play. And if, like the managers said, unanimously, that competence in Fair Play, above all, is developed by example, the same thinking lies with the organization as a whole. Superficial conceptions will generate role models that can be more or less superficial, and organizations more or less competent to operate toward Fair Play logic.

Legitimacy and Fairness

Tosi, Justin R. January 2015 (has links)
The essays included in this dissertation develop a fair play account of state legitimacy. I argue for a modest revision to the traditional analysis of legitimacy. I then defend the principle of fair play against common objections. Next, I argue that the principle of fair play is capable of generating all the rights included in the new analysis of legitimacy defended earlier. Finally, I argue that the principle of fair play grounds the legitimacy of existing reasonably just states.

Gult, rött eller grönt kort?

Wirén, Anton January 2018 (has links)
This is a comparative study of the ideal of fair play in football and rugby. The purpose of this study is to understand and explain how fair play changes and develops in different sports with a comparison between football and rugby. Fair play is about the formal and informal rules, and about behaving in a positive manner, not only to avoid negative behaviour. Fair play is said to be fundamental in sports but the number of athletes that break this ideal suggests that it’s not. Structural functionalism is about social control, the football referee can for example control the players by showing them yellow or red (or green) cards. Fair play is an ideal of the 19th century, a British ideal, an ideal of the upper-class, an ideal of masculinity, and a Christian ideal. My conclusion is that there is a need for a more problematised approach to fair play.
