Daar is aangedui hoe emosionele
aangewese. / The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fathers unemployment
on the adolescent's life world.
In an attempt to understand the adolescent's life world, it was necessary to
address the adolescent in totality. It has been shown how emotional trauma,
such as the unexpected unemployment of the father, not only impairs the
adolescent's physical-, cognitive-, affective-, social- and normative
development but also has a negative influence on scholastic performance.
The unemployment of a father has a particular influence on the relations
within the family. The adolescent's life world, which is the Gestalt of all the
relations that he or she formed, is also particularly influenced by the father's
unemployment.
The empirical research reveals that the adolescent who's father is
unemployed is much more inclined to negative meaning, involvement and
experience. Thus this adolescent is restraint on his way to self -
actualisation and becomes receptive to therapeutic intervention. / Psychology of Education / M.Ed. (Psychology of Education)

The experiences of stepmothers of non-residential stepchildrenHutton, Karmen 09 1900 (has links)
This study explored the experiences of stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren,
using a phenomenological approach and qualitative exploratory design. Participants were recruited in the Gauteng area through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the information. The findings of this study indicate the following: the participants, in their role as stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren, experienced various challenges that were very stressful, especially during the early stages of stepfamily formation. The lack of acknowledgement of the stepmothers’ dedication to their stepchildren, as well as conflicting rules concerning how to care for the children, caused distress for the participants. Support from their partners, as well as improved stepfamily relationships over time, were acknowledged as contributing factors to the participants’ continued commitment to their stepfamilies. Further research on stepmothers of non-residential stepchildren is recommended / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Resilience in families with an autistic childVan der Walt, Kerry-Jan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The primary aim of this study was to identify the characteristics and resources that families possess that enable them to adapt successfully, and as such, be resilient despite the presence of an autistic child in the family. The study was rooted within the contextual framework of the Resilience Model of Adjustment and Adaptation of McCubbin, Thompson and McCubbin (1996). Self-report questionnaires were completed by the parents of 34 families whose children attend either the Alpha School for Autistic Learners, the Vera School for Autistic Learners, or the Special Needs Adapted Programme. The self-report questionnaires were based on the Resilience Model of Adjustment and Adaptation. In addition, families were required to complete a biographical questionnaire and an open-ended question relating to their experience of factors relating to adaptation. The results pointed towards the importance of resilience factors in adaptation. The most significant resilience factors identified in this study include higher socioeconomic status; social support; open and predictable patterns of communication; supportive family environment, including commitment and flexibility; family hardiness; internal and external coping strategies; a positive outlook; and family belief systems. The clinical utility of the study in facilitating adaptation lies in its ability to provide parents with confirmation of the value of their efforts to improve the quality of life of their autistic child, as well as the family, and in providing all those involved in helping the autistic child, albeit parents or professionals, with insight into ways of creating a family environment, which will enhance the well-being of the autistic child, without detriment to the total family system. Family resilience theory provides a relevant framework within which the process of adapting to an autistic child can be considered. By applying these theories to their specific crisis situation, families of autistic children can work towards identifying, as well as implementing those factors which will lead to better adaptation, and thus increased resilience.

Resilience in families of husbands with prostate cancerThiel, Colleen 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / Family resilience is an increasingly visible concept in the field of family psychology. The aim of the present study was to identify family resilience qualities associated with the successful adaptation of families with a husband diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & Thompson, 1991) served as the theoretical framework in the design and the execution of the research. Both qualitative and quantitative measures were used in this cross-sectional survey research design. Twenty-one husbands and their spouses independently completed seven questionnaires, a biographical questionnaire and answered an open-ended question. Qualitative findings revealed the importance of intrafamilial support, spiritual/religious beliefs and professional support and knowledge in families coping with prostate cancer. Quantitative results indicated that family adaptation to prostate cancer was fostered by family hardiness (the family's internal strengths and durability), affirmative communication and social support.

Thesis (MA)- University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties of
the Family Sense of Coherence Questionnaire (FSoC) for use among Northern
Sothos. Antonovsky and Sourani developed the FSoC-questionnaire to measure
the sense of coherence of families. The family sense of coherence is based on
the individual sense of coherence construct, which was developed by
Antonovsky. According to Antonovsky, families with a strong sense of coherence
will function better than families with a weak sense of coherence. Therefore
family functioning was used as criteria to validate the external validity of the
FSoC-questionnaire.
Olson, Russell and Sprenkle developed the Family Attachment and
Changeability Index (FACI-8) to measure family functioning according to the
Circumplex model. For the purpose of this study the two questionnaires were
translated to Sepedi (the language of the Northern Sotho). The reliability of the
two questionnaires was assessed by means of Cronbach-alpha coefficients. The
construct validity of the two questionnaires was assessed by means of
JOreskog's Goodness of Fit Index (GFI). The statistical analysis was done with
Statistica 6 software.
The results drawn from the present study indicates that the FSoC-questionnaire
is not a reliable and valid instrument to measure families' sense of coherence
among Northern Sothos. Significant high correlations with the FACI-8 however,
indicated that the FSoC might be considered for use among Northern Sothos, if
only the total scores are taken into consideration.
The FACI-8 however, proved to be a reliable and valid instrument to measure
family functioning according to the Circumplex model among Northern Sothos.
The conclusions drawn from the present study are that the FACI-8 is a suitable
instrument for use among the Northern Sothos, whereas the FSoC-questionnaire
is not.
Sprenkle ontwikkel was.
Volgens Antonovsky sal gesinne wat oor 'n sterk ontwikkelde koherensiesin
beskik, beter funksioneer as gesinne wat oor 'n swak ontwikkelde koherensiesin
beskik. Gevolglik was gesinsfunksionering as 'n maatstaf van gesinskoherensie
gebruik.
FACI-8 gevalideer was.

The Effects of Parental Divorce and Family Conflict on Young Adults Females' Perceptions of Social Support and AdjustmentQuinn, M. Theresa 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of parental divorce and family conflict during adolescence on young adult females' social support and psychological adjustment. The three areas explored were perceptions of relationship satisfaction and closeness, sources and amount of social support and adjustment. One hundred and forty-one female undergraduates, 53% from families in which their parents are still married and 47% from families in which a parental divorce occurred during adolescence, completed the following measures: the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Spanier, 1976), the Social Provisions Scale-Source Specific (Cutrona, 1989), the Inventory of Common Problems (Hoffman & Weiss, 1986), the Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), and the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (Furman & Buhrmester, 1985).

Family Stress Factors Across Three Family TypesBarlow, Karen Haun 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the difference in stress levels of stress factors according to the structure or type of family. The relatedness of the ranking of stress factors within and across three family types and the relationship between level of stress and number of years in current family type were also examined. Important aspects of this study were using three family types, using families seeking counseling as the subjects, and investigating numerous stress factors across family types. These research techniques avoided the limitations of previous research which investigated only one family type, thus isolating special stress issues for a certain family type where those special issues actually might not differentiate among family types. Also, considering numerous stress factors at one time, rather than only a few factors, indicated relative levels of stress as well as absolute stresses that families are likely to experience. Targeting families who had sought counseling should give counselors a more realistic view of clients and their problems.

The perpetual motion machineUnknown Date (has links)
The Perpetual Motion Machine is a collection of creative nonfiction essays about the author and her brother as they have experienced growing up both together and then apart throughout the years of their lives. The essays deal with the pair’s childhood, adolescence and adulthood as well as the issues of depression, anxiety and drug addiction. Some pieces are flash-style and others are longer works of lyric essay or general narrative. The pieces can both stand alone and work to create a larger, substantial narrative on how drug addiction affects an entire family, one’s whole world, thus telling a story about how the author must find herself through investigating her brother’s trials and tribulations with addiction. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
