Trajectories of Parenting Stress among Mothers and Fathers of Children with Developmental Disabilities: From Early Childhood through Adolescence

Woodman, Ashley Cynthia January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Penny Hauser-Cram / Parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD) face greater caregiving demands than other parents, which may lead to heightened levels of stress. The problematic behavior and functional limitations of the child with DD have been found to contribute to parenting stress (Baker et al., 2002; Beckman, 1991). Despite heightened demands, many parents successfully adapt to raising a child with DD. A goal of recent research has been to identify resources and supports that explain the considerable variability in parental adjustment (Neece & Baker, 2008). This dissertation examined trajectories of parenting stress among mothers (N=147) and fathers (N=110) of children with diverse developmental disabilities, from their child's early years (age 3) through adolescence (age 15). Using hierarchical linear modeling, stress was found to increase from early to middle childhood and subsequently decrease from middle childhood to adolescence. Characteristics of the child with DD were found to contribute to parents' stress, with higher behavior problems and lower functional skills predicting greater stress. Parent resources and supports were also found to relate to parenting stress. Greater social support, use of adaptive coping strategies, and more positive perceptions of the family climate predicted lower stress. An additional model was conducted using a modified hierarchical linear modeling approach to examine the role of child stressors and family resources and supports within parenting dyads. The findings of this study contribute to the limited literature on patterns of change in stress among parents, particularly fathers, of children with DD. Following these results, interventions for families of children with DD should aim to reduce child-related stressors and promote parent resources and supports. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2012. / Submitted to: Boston College. [pt] CLIMA FAMILIAR E PROBLEMAS EMOCIONAIS E COMPORTAMENTAIS EM UMA AMOSTRA DE CRIANÇAS DO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] FAMILY CLIMATE AND EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS IN A SAMPLE OF CHILDREN FROM RIO DE JANEIRO

17 March 2021 (has links)
[en] Literature has been showing the family s strong influence and its interactions over children s development. This study has focused on comprehending the importance of family to children s development, specifically the influence of family climate and family characteristics in occurrence of emotional and behavioral problems in children. To comprehend the relation between family climate and emotional and behavioral problems in children, the Bioecological Approach to Development was used as theoretical apparatus, so as similar researches about the theme. With this purpose, a sample of children from Rio de Janeiro was investigated surrounding the relation between family climate, the family’s sociodemographic characteristics and emotional and behavioral problems during childhood. Within the respondents of the 237 families who participated, 168 were mothers, 39 fathers and 30 caretakers for children, between 7 and 13 years old, registered in elementary schools in Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected through the Family-Climate Inventory, the Child Behavior Checklist and a socio-demographic questionnaire. The family climate had association with the family income, mental health and educational level of parents. Pearson s correlations and multiple linear regressions indicated a negative association between family support and cohesion and children s emotional/behavioral problems. Thus, conflict and family hierarchy were positively association with these problems. The results show the importance of the proximal processes, and especially the family climate, as an important source of protection for children s development.

Feedback-informed therapy in Family counseling - Does it lead to improvement?

Backlund, Gunilla January 2016 (has links)
The following study is about feedback informed treatment in family councelling. The purpose was to measure the couples experienced change in life satisfaction, to see if treatment sessions of family councelling makes a difference and change according to the estimation instruments ORS and SRS and is consistent with the estimate of the atmosphere in the couple´s relationship/family atmosphere and if there were any gender differences. The study group included 29 couples who sought help at the Family councelling in southern Dalarna, Mora and Linköping during the period of January 2016 to May 2016. The couples filled in the instrument ORS (measuring change) at the beginning of each session and SRS (measuring alliance) at the end of each session. The family councellor used the received feedback and corrected treatment accordingly. In the first and third session the couples filled in the "Family climate" instrument. The outcome after three sessions showed a small improvement in the life satisfaction for both men and women which were consistent with the estimate of the atmosphere and the climate in the family. The vicinity improved and chaos decreased.
