Riglyne vir 'n MIV/VIGS-groepwerk-voorkomingsprogram vir die plaaswerkergemeenskap / Leana NogueiraNogueira, Leana January 2006 (has links)
HIV/AIDS mainly is a health problem, which is accompanied by social and economic
implications worldwide and is seen as a pandemic that negatively affects South Africa.
The agricultural labour force, specifically the farm worker community, is also negatively
affected by it. However, few research reports are available pertaining to this problem in
this section of the population
Based on the above, the researcher investigated the attitudes and level of knowledge of the
farm worker community with regard to HIV/AIDS. During the investigation it was
established that knowledge was lacking and a misperception regarding the HI virus
prevailed in the farm worker community.
A needs assessment was executed in order to establish what information the farm workers
wish to receive and whether they would be willing to attend group assemblies. Initially,
the farm workers were not familiar with the term 'group work', but once it was explained
to them it was established that the farm workers did indeed feel a need for a group work
programme. A prevention programme was compiled in accordance with the needs of the
farm workers, which included giving information on HIV/AIDS as well as teaching them
life skills. An attempt was made to compile the programme in a culture sensitive manner
so that information could reach the farm workers at their level of functioning.
The aim of the investigation was:
To establish the attitudes, convictions and level of knowledge of black farm
workers with regard to HIV/AIDS by means of a literature study and empirical
investigation; and
To compile an HIV/AIDS group work prevention programme based on a literature
study and empirical research.
In conclusion, it can be said that the research has proved that knowledge pertaining to the
virus is lacking among the farm worker community and that it is essential to change their
attitudes.
Group work, as a method of social work, can be utilised with remarkable success to bring
about positive changes regarding HIV/AIDS in this sector. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.

Stories from the front: health care access in the U.S. and Mexico in Mexican migrant farm workersLeung-Heras, Jacqueline Marie 01 May 2010 (has links)
Migrant farm workers experience many hardships during their time in the U.S. One major problem faced by migrant farm workers is the lack of access to and utilization of health care services. Migrant farm workers usually do not qualify for services in the U.S., and often do not have any services available to them when in Mexico. This study examined the utilization and satisfaction of health services received by migrant farm workers. A total of seven Latino migrant farm workers were interviewed. Analysis indicated each worker had utilized the health program available to them in Iowa and were satisfied with the service they received. The majority of workers reported that not having health insurance impeded the likelihood of their seeking medical services in Mexico. They were satisfied with any services they received during their time in Iowa. The findings stress the importance of providing additional prevention health services to migrant farm workers to increase access, utilization, and satisfaction with health services.

Food for Thought: A Strengths-Based Approach to Examining the Biomedical and Psychological Health of Latino Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers in GeorgiaWeinberg, Joanna R. 11 August 2011 (has links)
Inherent in their living and working conditions, Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers (MSFWs) are exposed to a multitude of environmental and psychosocial stressors that make them susceptible to adverse health outcomes. Utilizing a resilience framework, the current study examined both the physical and psychological health functioning of MSFWs in Georgia, a state heavily reliant on farm worker labor where relatively few research studies with MSFWs have been conducted to date. Based on a sample of 120 Latino, male, MSFWs in South Georgia, results indicated that approximately 1 out of 3 farm workers were at risk for iron-deficiency anemia. Similar to other psychological health studies conducted with MSFWs located in the Eastern U.S., the prevalence rate of depression in the current sample was elevated. MSFW stress was found to be a risk factor for psychological health and positive well-being and accurate farm worker expectations were found to be assets associated with better psychological health outcomes. Farm worker expectations was also found to be a protective factor for physical health such that having accurate expectations buffered the relationship between MSFW stress and adverse biomedical health. Results show the usefulness of the resilience framework, and highlight the importance of establishing prevention, intervention, and policy efforts for MSFWs that aim to increase assets and minimize risk in this population.

Previous issue date: 2014-06-10 / This paper addresses the issue of modern-day slavery, in particular the rural workers
exploitation in Goiás. It is known that slave labor is the most serious form of labor
exploitation, and analyze it is embarking on areas where dignity, freedom and legality
do not exist. Situations that insist occur, not always accurate identification because of
the different running modes this offense. National statistics show that 2,750 workers
were found in conditions analogous to slavery in 2012. Victims are people of all
ethnicities, with common characteristics, which protrude poverty and oppression.
These workers end up losing their freedom and being subjugated by violence, debt,
threats and fraud, and contemporary slavery covers a variety of violations of
fundamental human and social rights under labor relations. This research aimed to
highlight the characterization of modern-day slavery, focusing on the rural workers
exploitation in Goiás For this, were sought to understand the historical evolution, the
bibliographic production, legislation, treaties and international agreements on the
contemporary slave labor, as well as contextualize and characterize the slave labor in
the state of Goiás, the methodology was qualitative descriptive exploratory research
based on bibliographic analysis. These results highlight the failure of legislation to
decent work in many rural areas and indicate that there is still contemporary slave
labor in most states. In relation to the state of Goiás, it was found that in the year 2008
was the region with the largest number of employees subjected to flagrant
contemporary slavery, 328 employees for 2009 and 2010 were released Goiás was the
third largest state in Brazil with number of cases of slave labor. Stands in the fight
against modern-day slavery, the actions of the Ministry of Labor, the Federal Public
Ministry and, especially, the Special Mobile Inspection Group whose systematic
checks have for inhibited" next actions enslavers agents and other also evidenced
antagonistic forms to decent work.
caracterização do trabalho escravo contemporâneo, tendo como foco a exploração
do trabalhador rural em Goiás. Para isso, buscou-se compreender a evolução
histórica, a produção bibliográfica, a legislação, os tratados e pactos internacionais
escravidão contemporânea, as atuações do Ministério Público do Trabalho, do
Ministério Público Federal e, sobretudo, do Grupo Especial de Fiscalização Móvel
cujas fiscalizações sistemáticas tem por um lado inibido as ações de agentes
escravizadores e, por outro, também evidenciado formas antagônicas ao trabalho
decente.
