Title: Body composition and morphological asymmetries in football players and their possible residues in the phase of return after injury Aim: The main goal of the work was to identify changes in body composition and the occurrence of morphological asymmetries and the length of the residual period after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in elite footballers. Methods: The research group consisted of two elite adult football players. The basic characteristics are listed in Table 2. The players were active in the highest national competitions and their training volume corresponds to 15-23 hours per week. The selection of players was intentional. Prior to the measurement, we determined the current standing body height with an accuracy of 1 mm using a stadiometer (SECA 242, Hamburg, Germany) and the body weight with an accuracy of 1 g using a digital scale (SECA 769, Hamburg, Germany). We used a multifrequency bioimpedance analyser (Tanita MC-980MA, Tanita Corporation, Japan) to determine body composition. The actual measurement lasted approximately 120 s, the actual body weight to recalculate indirectly measurable parameters was recorded by the analyser itself with an accuracy of 1 g. The Relationships Between Energy Balance, Timing and Quantity of Protein Consumption, and Body Composition in Collegiate Football Players

Background Timing and quantity of protein (PRO) consumption are important considerations for muscle protein synthesis (MPS), fat-free mass (FFM) accretion, and body fat % (BF%) reduction. The effect of PRO ingestion on changes in FFM is mediated by many variables. Past studies have focused on specific composition of carbohydrate (CHO) and PRO consumption (CHO vs. PRO + CHO), and have also investigated PRO intake timing at pre-exercise, post-exercise, or both. Other studies have investigated FFM maintenance and growth with increased PRO consumption during catabolic or anabolic phases of energy balance (EB). These mechanisms have been studied in various populations, including healthy untrained individuals, overweight and obese people, and endurance athletes. However, studies have not explored relationships between the amount and timing of PRO ingested, and the state of EB, as it relates to FFM%. Method/Design A retrospective analysis design was used to assess relationships between PRO ingestion, timing, and EB on FFM in collegiate football players. Subjects were members of an intercollegiate Division 1 football team, had completed a one-day food and activity record, and had body composition assessed as part of a regular team screening procedure. Data acquisition was supervised by a PhD/Registered Dietitian. Food and activity records were analyzed using NutriTiming®, which predicts RMR via the Harris-Benedict equation, uses a MET-based relative intensity activity scale, and accesses the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 26 to predict hourly EB and PRO consumption. EB was assessed as ±400 kcal EB (EBR), < 0 kcal EB (NEGEB), and > 0 kcal EB (POSEB). Total useable PRO (TUP) was defined as the sum of PRO consumed in units up to 30g max/meal, a value also assessed relative to EB at the time of ingestion. The goal was to assess the amount and timing of PRO intake with EB as these factors relate to FFM. Results Pearson's correlations found that BF% was negatively associated with TUP while in EBR (r=-.253; p=0.049), and FFM% was positively associated TUP in EBR (r=0.279; p=0.030) and in POSEB (r=0.282; p=0.028). NEGEB was positively associated with BF% (r=0.325; p=0.011), and negatively associated with FFM% (r=-0.322; p=0.011). Conclusions Results elucidate that players who ingest PRO in a relatively good energy-balanced state had higher FFM% and a lower BF%. Further, those players consuming TUP while in POSEB had an even stronger positive association with FFM% and a stronger inverse association with BF%. These data reject the null hypothesis that football players who consume PRO in POSEB have less FFM% than those who consume PRO in NEGEB.

Metabolism and body composition in chronic inflammatory arthritis : prevention and intervention through pharmaceutical and physical means

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterised by excessive production of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). This leads to rheumatoid cachexia, a condition characterised by increased resting energy expenditure (REE) and loss of fat-free mass (FFM) leading to functional disability, decreased strength and balance. The aims of this research work was to: a) to develop a new REE equation in order to continuously monitor abnormal changes in REE in the RA population, b) to investigate if smoking further enhances hypermetabolism and c) to examine if the new anti-TNFα medication reverses this metabolic abnormality. Methods: 68 patients with RA were assessed for demographic and anthropometrical characteristics, REE (indirect calorimetry), body composition (bioelectrical impedance), and disease activity [C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), disease activity score 28 (DAS28) and health assessment questionnaire (HAQ)]. 20 of the total 68 patients, about to start anti-TNFα therapy, underwent the exact same aforementioned procedures but on three separate occasions (Baseline: two weeks prior to anti-TNFα treatment, Time-1 and Time-2: two weeks and three months, respectively, after the drug had been introduced. Results: Study 1: Based on FFM and CRP, a new equation was developed which had a prediction power of R2=0.76. The new equation revealed an almost identical mean with measured REE (1645.2±315.2 and 1645.5±363.1 kcal/day, p>0.05), and a correlation coefficient of r=0.87 (p=0.001). Study 2: Smokers with RA demonstrated significantly higher REE (1513.9±263.3 vs. 1718.1±209.2 kcal/day; p=0.000) and worse HAQ (1.0±0.8 vs. 1.7±0.8; p=0.01) compared to age and FFM matched RA non-smokers. The REE difference was significantly predicted by the interaction smoking/gender (p=0.04). Study 3: Significant increases were observed in REE (p=0.002), physical activity (p=0.001) and protein intake (p=0.001) between the three times of assessment. Moreover, disease activity significantly reduced [ESR (p=0.002), DAS28 (p=0.000), HAQ (p=0.000) and TNFα (p=0.024)] while FFM and total body fat did not change (both at p>0.05). Physical activity and protein intake were found to be significant within-subject factors for the observed REE elevation after 12-weeks on anti-TNFα treatment (p=0.001 and p=0.024, respectively). Conclusions: Findings from the first study revealed that the newly developed REE equation provides an accurate prediction of REE in RA patients. Moreover, the results from the second study showed that cigarette smoking further increases REE in patients with RA and has a negative impact on patients’ self-reported functional status. Finally, our data from the third study suggest that REE remains elevated not because of the maintenance of the RA-related hypermetabolism but due to the concomitant significant increases in physical activity and protein intake.

Esta disfunção pode ser revertida parcialmente por meio de treinamento físico que, contudo, provoca respostas imunes dependentes de vários fatores, entre eles, o tipo, a intensidade e a duração do exercício. Objetivo: avaliar respostas inflamatórias, bem como níveis de força muscular e valores de massa magra em pacientes com DPOC sem tratamento prévio, comparando dois protocolos de treinamento resistido. Bakgrund: En del elitidrottare, exempelvis inom uthållighetsgrenar, genomför högträningsvolym vilket stressar kroppen. Hög träningsvolym resulterar i högenergiförbrukning vilket kräver ett stort energiintag. Ett otillräckligt energiintag påverkarkroppen fysiologiskt på ett flertal sätt och kan leda till syndromet relativ energibrist iidrott (REI - S). Syftet Studiens syfte var att studera samband mellankroppssammansättning och viloomsättning (RMR) korrelerat till relativ energibrist hossvenska elitidrottare. Metod/Urval: Studien följde en tvärsnittsstudiedesign. Mätning avkroppskomposition (fettmassa och fettfri massa) samt viloomsättning (RMR) utfördes.RMRratio beräknades genom mätt RMR (mRMR) delat på beräknad RMR (pRMR).mRMR beräknades under laborationen och pRMR beräknades genom Cunningham1991ekvationen. Urvalet bestod av 23 svenska elitidrottare från olika sporter med ettåldersspann från 18 år - 43 år. Resultat: Procentuell fettfri massa (FFM %) och RMR -värde korrelerade positivt (r = 0,47, p = 0,023). En negativ måttligt stark korrelationberäknades mellan procentuell fettmassa (FM %) och RMR - värde (r = -0,47, p = 0,024). Slutsats Därmed korrelerade kroppssammansättning och viloomsättning hos svenskaelitidrottare. Viloomsättning korrelerade positivt med FFM % och negativt med FM %. / Background Some elite athletes, such as endurance runners, undergo extreme levels of training volume which stresses the body. High training volume results in high energy expenditure which requires a large energy intake. Consequences of insufficient amounts of energy intake are physiological dysfunctions and may lead to relative energy deficiency in sports (RED- S). Purpose The aim of the study was to research relations between body composition (FM, FFM) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in correlation with RED-S amongst Swedish elite athletes. Method/Subjects This research follows a cross-sectional study design. Measurements to calculate body composition and RMR were performed. RMRratio was calculated by measured RMR (mRMR) divided by predicted RMR (pRMR). The Cunningham1991 equation was used to calculate pRMR. A total of 23 healthy Swedish elite athletes from different sports were measured, age ranging from 18 - 43 year olds. Results The percentage of fat free mass (FFM %) correlated positively with RMR (r = 0,47, p = 0,023). Percentage of fat mass (FM %) correlated negatively with RMR (r = - 0,47, p = 0,024). Conclusion A correlation between body composition and RMR amongst Swedish elite athletes was discovered. RMR correlated positively with FFM%  and negatively with FM%.

Associations Between Fat Free Mass Percentage and Relative Force Production in Two Strength Tests

Background: Knowledge of the relationship between fat free mass (FFM) and strength capacity is not only useful in athlete coaching, but may also be important in developing clinical strategies for evaluating health in general populations. Sufficient skeletal muscle mass and strength are important factors for health and physical function. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a popular and clinically useful tool for assessing body composition. However, being able to simultaneously estimate whole body muscle strength without having to perform additional tests may prove useful in evaluating an individual’s health and physical function. Aim: The primary purpose of this study was to quantify the association between total body fat free mass percentage (TBFFM%) and relative strength in the isometric midthigh pull test (IMTP) and grip strength (GS) test in a healthy general young Swedish population. A secondary purpose was to investigate if there are any sex differences.  Methods: The design for this study was cross-sectional. The studied sample represented a general Swedish population of healthy young adults. Participants were asked to participate in testing on one occasion. Three tests were used for collecting data: BIA for data on FFM and both IMTP and hand dynamometer grip strength test for data on maximal force production. All tests were performed in the movement lab on Halmstad University campus. Statistical analyses were done using Pearson’s correlation and linear regression analysis. Results: Participants for this study consisted of healthy females (n=18) and males (n=17) aged 19-39. The primary findings of this study are that there are strong correlations between TBFFM% and relative strength (r = 0.621) in the IMTP test as well as relative GS (r = 0.705) on a whole-group level. The correlation between TBFFM% and relative GS was slightly stronger. Categorized by sex, we found strong positive correlations between TBFFM% and relative IMTP (r = 0.551) and relative GS (r = 0.596) for the female group and moderately strong correlations for the male group (relative IMTP r = 0.411; relative GS  r = 0.422).On a whole-group level, every unit increase in TBFFM% increases relative strength in the IMTP by 0.538N/kgBW (β = 0.538) and relative GS by 0.015 kg/kgBW (β = 0.015). Conclusion: TBFFM% was strongly associated with both relative IMTP strength and relative GS where the association was stronger for females than for males. TBFFM% values may be indicative of an individual's strength, which could be of value in a research setting.

Title: Appropriateness of choice to walk or run, depending on the speed of a quick relocation with load carriage Objectives: Comparison of physiological response of organism during the walk and run at speed 6 - 7,4 km.h-1 with carried load 15 kg with follow-up determination of critical speed in connection with economy of these activities where there were discovered sizes of correlation with proportional representation of fat free mass and working length of lower limb. Methods: The method applied in this research was the quantitative research based on intra-individual and inter-individual comparative analysis. Results: Based on the measured data it has been found out that there is a critical speed at 7,43 km.h-1 (±0,53), with respect to economy of walk compared to run with 15 kg load. The average heart rate during the critical speed was 129 BPM (±9,67). The average energy expenditure per minute during the critical speed was 11,9 kcal (±2,04). In addition there were discovered sizes of correlation between critical speed and the working length of lower limb where rP = 0,9203 was statiscitally significant. Effects of weight loss and phenotype traits on changes in body composition and cholesterol metabolism in overweight individuals

Global obesity is linked to chronic diseases including hypercholesterolemia, a cardiovascular disease risk factor, thus weight reduction in obesity is a key priority for combatting obesity. The cholesterol transporters ABCG5, ABCG8 and NPC1L1 mediate cholesterol trafficking across the intestinal wall, thus are important in regulating cholesterol metabolism and circulating levels. The objective of this study was to examine if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of cholesterol transporters ABCG5, ABCG8 and NPC1L1 are associated with changes in cholesterol synthesis and absorption and lipid parameters (LP) subsequent to weight loss (WtL) in overweight individuals. Eighty-nine individuals from two WtL trials (Trial A (n = 54) and Trial B (n = 35)) completed a 20-wk WtL period. After 10% WtL, lipid parameters excluding LDL-C were improved in Trial A, while all lipid parameters were ameliorated after 12% of WtL when Trial A and B were combined. Post-WtL, cholesterol synthesis (CS) was reduced; however, cholesterol absorption was not changed in either Trial A or the combined trials. Polymorphisms in ABCG8 V632A were associated with changes in TC and TG levels after WtL in both trial A and the combined data. SNPs in ABCG5 Q604E, ABCG8 T400K, were associated with changes in CS because of WtL in Trial A; however, the association is no longer seen in combined analysis. In conclusion, cardio-protective changes in LP due to weight loss were mediated by reductions in CS. Additionally, polymorphisms in ABCG8 were associated with amelioration in LP after WtL. Thus, the benefits in CVD risk subsequent to weight loss vary across individuals due to genetic factors associated with cholesterol trafficking.
