No. of bitstreams: 1 DissMRTE.pdf: 1396406 bytes, checksum: ea84abaf96ea1c4d62a7a31852bd839f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-17 / Não recebi financiamento / Brazilian schools known as “Institutos Federais” (Federal Institutes), and the expansion of their campuses are presented here as a possibility to tackle national challenges and to outperform old professional educations paradigms. So in this work we try to check the possible relations that exist between the technological axis implemented on the new campuses and the local productive arrangements. This work is based on case analysis with bibliographic and documental research, analysis of socioeconomic data, semi-structured interviews with representative actors, visits to the campuses and reflections using the structural and historical analysis method. In section 1 the theme is introducted and presented. In section 2 we make a conceptual exposition about Professional Education, and the relation between education, work, development, knowledge, Local Arrangements, their disputes and tendencies. We also discuss the diverse objectives of Professional Education, sometimes aiming the individual, sometimes aiming the centrality of the market, this duality being persistent even after some tentative reformations. We also discuss the formal education as a means to emancipate people, cause social transformation, or to conciliate development, inequalities reduction and democracy. In section 3 we present the history of the Professional Education, highlight the main facts that lead to the resuming of the Professional and Technological Education Federal Network (“Rede Federal de Educação Profissional e Tecnológica - RFEPT”) and to the creation of the Federal Institutes, during Lula's government. We highlight the centenary of this network, and the conflicting projects for educations and national development. In section 4, we explore the peculiarities of the Federal Institute of São Paulo (“Instituto Federal de São Paulo - IFSP”), a new, but also old, institution, focusing on its campus at the city of Araraquara, and the contextualization of the development of this region of São Paulo State, leading actor of the national development. The city of Araraquara is an important city of the central region of the State, and also Seat of a Government Region. To achieve this objective, we use the research made by Maria Teresa Miceli Kerbauy. We explore, mainly by interviews with representative people, the campus installed at Araraquara, and its role in the region, this campus participates on the phase II of the expansion plan of the Network. The contextualization uses socioeconomic data from Fundação Seade and the approach of political leadership. On the last section, we make remarks and reflections about IFSP, its mission, its identity, its priorities and the possible priority of its relation with the region, as stated by Law 11.892 of December, 29, 2008, that was the law that created the Federal Institutes. We also look for pointing directions for new actions and new studies. We conclude that this expansion is beyond its transformations potential and confirm the hipothesis of the influence of other factors beyond the locality, on the definition of new courses to be implementes on the new campuses.

Information needs and information seeking behaviour of researchers in an Industrial Research Institute in Nigeria

Makinde, Olayinka Babayemi 03 1900 (has links)
The entire world needs and seeks information to survive and thrive in the 21st century as a result of information acquisition, with doctors, lawyers, teachers, students and even the elderly all desiring information for their everyday activities. Researchers of different disciplines working at the various federal institutes in Nigeria are no exceptions to the craving for requisite information that will enable them successfully carry out their numerous research projects undertaken towards achieving sustainable national development. The aim of the study was to investigate the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of researchers at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Nigeria. This study applied both quantitative and qualitative research approaches for the purpose of triangulation. The quantitative approach had a strong dominance over the qualitative approach in this study. This study adopted the positivist paradigm. The questionnaire, interview and observation data collection tools were the chosen tools used to collect data from researchers from the six departments of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi and five professional librarians of the institute’s library. Out of 165 questionnaires that were administered to researchers, a total of 121 were returned (resulting in a response rate of 73%). Inaccuracies were identified in seven copies of the questionnaires which were discarded and not analysed. Therefore, usable returns totalled 114 (67%). Wilson’s 1999 model of information behaviour was used as the theoretical framework. This study revealed that both formal and informal sources were consulted by the researchers. It was important to note that the internet was the information source most commonly used by the researchers to obtain information. The institute’s library was poorly used because it contained outdated library materials and was not equipped with an internet facility. The researchers opted for the use of mobile phone/iPad, personally owned or sourced internet access and business centres (supplying internet services outside the institute) to access information sources for information. The study ascertained that there was undoubtedly an instituted library officially established within the institute to provide information to researchers. But due to socio-economic and political problems faced by the country Nigeria, predominantly with respect to the outlook of poor funding of sustainable library development concerns and the government’s lack of interest in research, outdated library collections and poor information provision services have become the given at the institute’s library. This ultimately brought about pessimistic reactions from the researchers. Among its recommendations, the study suggested that funding the institute’s library in order to update and replace outdated library collections is a priority. An information audit should be carried out to ascertain the current state of ICTs within the institute and the institute’s library should be equipped with an internet facility promptly. Adopting these recommendations would enable researchers to have limitless access to items of information they need for research as they seek for information. / Information Science / D. Phil. At the same time, it is important that this teacher organizes his practice from didactical and pedagogical guidelines of teaching through textual genres, which crosses the bias of the didactical sequences of Bernard Scheneuwly and Joaquim Dolz as well as the theoretical interactionist idea of Levy Vygotsky. It is also necessary trying to understand approaches that comprise the multimodal universe of various emerging communication forms, which consolidates several sign systems that interweaves each other in order to establish language uses, and thus the result of human relations expressed by ways of several languages. This implies to mention literacy and multi-literacy, once multimodality is a constitutive characteristic of social communicative forms, which are found in society in accordance with technological development. Not only this emphasizes oral and written interactions, but also includes every communicative technology. Once that new means of organization for academic knowledge are created as a result of this context of continuous changes and that new means of reading, interpreting and producing texts are constantly being produced, this paper presents only those ones focused on the study of languages, which stimulates a didactic and pedagogical transposition flexible to several cultural contexts. From this assumption, this paper aims to present results from a research conducted on the program of post-degree in Agricultural Education (UFRRJ), which intends to create a summary and analyze critically the knowledge and didactical and pedagogical practice of Portuguese Language Teachers of The Federal Institute of Amap?. Thus, this study purposed to see that the Portuguese-speaking school with a didactic and pedagogical practice rooted in the theory of genres , guided at first by the National Curriculum Standards , can help pluridiscursivo language learning , going beyond what is proposed and waiting for this document , achieving citizenship education linked to the context of technological change , in which different genres emerge as the sociocomunicativa needs of individuals in situations of social interaction / O ensino de L?ngua Portuguesa ministrado pelo professor da contemporaneidade n?o pode prescindir das orienta??es e influ?ncias dos Par?metros Curriculares Nacionais e dos postulados te?ricos da Lingu?stica Textual, os quais s?o ancorados nos princ?pios te?ricos de Mikhail Bakhtin.

Carl Friedrich Geiser and Ferdinand Rudio : the men behind the first International Congress of Mathematicians

Eminger, Stefanie Ursula January 2015 (has links)
The first International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) was held in Zurich in 1897, setting the standards for all future ICMs. Whilst giving an overview of the congress itself, this thesis focuses on the Swiss organisers, who were predominantly university professors and secondary school teachers. As this thesis aims to offer some insight into their lives, it includes their biographies, highlighting their individual contributions to the congress. Furthermore, it explains why Zurich was chosen as the first host city and how the committee proceeded with the congress organisation. Two of the main organisers were the Swiss geometers Carl Friedrich Geiser (1843-1934) and Ferdinand Rudio (1856-1929). In addition to the congress, they also made valuable contributions to mathematical education, and in Rudio's case, the history of mathematics. Therefore, this thesis focuses primarily on these two mathematicians. As for Geiser, the relationship to his great-uncle Jakob Steiner is explained in more detail. Furthermore, his contributions to the administration of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are summarised. Due to the overarching theme of mathematical education and collaborations in this thesis, Geiser's schoolbook "Einleitung in die synthetische Geometrie" is considered in more detail and Geiser's methods are highlighted. A selection of Rudio's contributions to the history of mathematics is studied as well. His book "Archimedes, Huygens, Lambert, Legendre" is analysed and compared to E W Hobson's treatise "Squaring the Circle". Furthermore, Rudio's papers relating to the commentary of Simplicius on quadratures by Antiphon and Hippocrates are considered, focusing on Rudio's translation of the commentary and on "Die Möndchen des Hippokrates". The thesis concludes with an analysis of Rudio's popular lectures "Leonhard Euler" and "Über den Antheil der mathematischen Wissenschaften an der Kultur der Renaissance", which are prime examples of his approach to the history of mathematics.

Multi-hazard analysis of steel structures subjected to fire following earthquake

Covi, Patrick 30 July 2021 (has links)
Fires following earthquake (FFE) have historically produced enormous post-earthquake damage and losses in terms of lives, buildings and economic costs, like the San Francisco earthquake (1906), the Kobe earthquake (1995), the Turkey earthquake (2011), the Tohoku earthquake (2011) and the Christchurch earthquakes (2011). The structural fire performance can worsen significantly because the fire acts on a structure damaged by the seismic event. On these premises, the purpose of this work is the investigation of the experimental and numerical response of structural and non-structural components of steel structures subjected to fire following earthquake (FFE) to increase the knowledge and provide a robust framework for hybrid fire testing and hybrid fire following earthquake testing. A partitioned algorithm to test a real case study with substructuring techniques was developed. The framework is developed in MATLAB and it is also based on the implementation of nonlinear finite elements to model the effects of earthquake forces and post-earthquake effects such as fire and thermal loads on structures. These elements should be able to capture geometrical and mechanical non-linearities to deal with large displacements. Two numerical validation procedures of the partitioned algorithm simulating two virtual hybrid fire testing and one virtual hybrid seismic testing were carried out. Two sets of experimental tests in two different laboratories were performed to provide valuable data for the calibration and comparison of numerical finite element case studies reproducing the conditions used in the tests. Another goal of this thesis is to develop a fire following earthquake numerical framework based on a modified version of the OpenSees software and several scripts developed in MATLAB to perform probabilistic analyses of structures subjected to FFE. A new material class, namely SteelFFEThermal, was implemented to simulate the steel behaviour subjected to FFE events.
