Female labor migration and the restructuring of migration discourse: a study of female workers from Chitwan, Nepal

Kharel, Arjun January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Laszlo Kulcsar / Nepali women are often barred from going abroad through discriminatory state policies, and the women engaging in foreign employment are generally perceived as "loose" women in Nepalese society. The female migrant workers are also represented as lacking "agency" and "victims" of sex trafficking in the Nepalese media. Despite the unfavorable socio-political contexts, a substantial number of Nepali women have engaged in transnational labor migration in the last two decades, often "illegally" by using the open Nepal-India border to reach the destination countries. The study investigates the impact of women's migration on the dominant discourse relating to female workers' sexuality and agency by analyzing the experiences of female workers from Chitwan, Nepal, who have returned after working as housemaids in the Persian Gulf. The study finds that the dominant discourse is both contested and reproduced during the emigration process and after the return of female workers. However, the dominant discourse is overall restructured in the emigrant communities due to women's participation in foreign employment and return with diverse experiences. As women's varied migration experiences are hardly reported in the national media, the discursive change in the local communities does not necessarily bring a (similar) change in the national discourse. While violence prevailed against female workers in the Gulf, most acts of violence were indirect and non-physical. The extreme forms of violence, such as physical and sexual abuses, which are usually reported in the media, were somewhat uncommon. The major complaints of the respondents were low wages, withholding and non-payment of wages, withholding of passport, extremely long hours of work, constant criticism, lack of adequate rest, and the feeling of confinement. The violence against the housemaids was largely facilitated by the sponsorship-based labor recruitment system in the Gulf that bound the migrant workers with their employers. At the micro level, the living arrangement (having to live with the employers) was also a contributing factor to violence against the female workers. The female workers who were employed in a household with multiple housemaids were less likely to experience violence than those who were the only maid in the employer's house.

“The Filipina is a fighter, a fighter for her rights, a fighter for her freedom to work and freedom to express herself” : An anthropological study about the feminization of migration in the Philippines

Maurin, Beatrice January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a result of a Minor Field Study with the purpose to examine the transnational labour migration by women in the Philippines who seek temporary employment abroad but plan to return to the Philippines after their contracts expired. The thesis is based on three months of anthropological fieldwork primarily in Manila between January and March 2013, using interviews and observations as my main methodological tool. I will reflect over the way in which women labour migration affect the women individually and socially by leaving one context and entering another. Migration places the Filipina outside the domestic sphere within their home country and increases their income-earning power. The Filipina has taken the role as the family’s breadwinner and is thereby challenging dominant gender roles within the Philippine society. The experience being a female migrant enhances their status, makes them stronger, more confident and provides them with the opportunity to make decisions independent of their male partners. Filipinas are being praised by their own society as ‘modern day heroes’, but at the same time blamed for leaving their obligation as dutiful daughters, nurturing mothers and caring wives. Ideas from state and society do not correspond to the reality, namely a reality where women have taken the position as their family’s main breadwinner. Which complicates the ability to induce a change in ideas regarding gender roles for men and women. Conclusively, the female migration has not resulted in a change regarding gender roles within the Philippine society.

Being a mother and owning an informal hairdressing business in Cape Town, South Africa : a study on Congolese female migrants

Gobile, Zizipho January 2015 (has links)
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil / This study investigates how female migrants negotiate the tension that arises from being entrepreneurs, being mothers, and having families. It shows how entrepreneurship offers them self-emancipation but limits the time they spend raising their children and time they spend with their families, but puts them in a position to provide financially for themselves, their children, and families. The focus of the study is on Congolese female migrant and also females from few African countries. It is hypothesized that female migration and entrepreneurship negatively impacts the relationships of these females with their children and families. Data was obtained through a survey of fifty-three respondents who were conveniently selected. This took place in the Western Cape Province, taking Cape Town, Bellville, and Parow as the cities to be observed. The statistical package for social sciences was used to analyze data. The results showed that female entrepreneurship has a negative impact on their relationships with their children but to an extent improves their relationships with their families and/or partners.

Il teatro sociale nelle pratiche di inclusione per le donne migranti in Italia / IL TEATRO SOCIALE NELLE PRATICHE DI INCLUSIONE PER LE DONNE MIGRANTI IN ITALIA / Social theatre among the practices of inclusion for migrant women in Italy

GUERINONI, MARTINA 07 June 2021 (has links)
The thesis aims to investigate, with a descriptive approach, the role of the practices of welcoming, inclusion, help and care, expression and emancipation of migrant women in Italy, starting from a reflection on the dramatic dimension of female migration. The heart of the research is the investigation of performing arts and practices, and especially of social theatre, whose methodology is particularly effective in the social inclusion of migrant women, as it focuses more on processes than on products, more on actions than on representations, more on the community than on the audience, more on relationships than on mediations. The role of social theatre in the practices of inclusion for migrant women is investigated in particular in the context of the Metropolitan City of Milan, in the face of an accurate mapping of the most significant projects that use media, arts, performance and culture for the inclusion of migrants, carried out in connection with the University Research project Migrations|Mediations and with the PRIN project Performing the social. In particular, we get to highlight and discuss the critical issues of some social theatre experiences with migrant women which, for different reasons, could not have a full realization.

The objective of this work is to analyze migration and life experiences of women in a gender perspective. I chose the gender approach , because I think that the social constructions that weigh on females , as duties , prohibitions , approvals and among other aspects are significant to understand how to configure the migration experiences in the female population . I sought to know the different migration experiences from three times , before migration , as they were in Rio de Janeiro and with the return of the city Fagundes - Paraíba . Highlight some aspects for analysis , as the place and role of migrant women in the family , relationship and work, new family arrangements ; challenges and conflicts experienced to combine work , education , child care and relationship with their spouses , what changes have occurred the return to Fagundes , after years living and working in Rio de Janeiro . The migration of women occurred Fagundes city , Paraíba to Rio de Janeiro . And women are currently in the return migrant status . At all times in the text I'm talking about women migrant workers . Women found that migration is a possibility of employment and subsequently an achievement of autonomy . To understand these aspects use the methodology of oral history because it considers the experiences and understanding of the uniqueness of the experiences over time.

Irregular Female Labour Migration from Ukraine for Labour to the Elderly Care Sector in Italy

Zibner, Rahel January 2010 (has links)
This research deals with irregular female migration from Ukraine to Italy for employment as caregivers to the elderly. The main questions to be addressed are: 'What are the reasons for Ukrainian women to migrate irregularly to such a large extent to Italy? Which important aspects are connected to their employment as a caregiver to the elderly from the individual point of view of Ukrainian women? In this thesis I want to explain the reasons for Ukrainian women to take up work as irregular caregivers in Italy, giving insight into the organization of daily life of irregular Ukrainian care givers. Practical examples will be given that examine the help women receive from Ukrainian professional and private networks. Despite information gaps, the combination of expert and migrant interviews in combination with the analysis of research studies and secondary sources produced important findings on this topic. Firstly, irregular female migration is economically motivated and women are driven to Italy through specific push and pull factors. Secondly, employment and daily life as a caregiver to the elderly in Italy entails economic advantages, but psychological disadvantages for Ukrainian women. 1

As imigrantes sul-americanas em São Paulo: o  trabalho feminino na construção de trajetórias transnacionais / The female south american immigrants in São Paulo: the female labour in the construction of transnational trajectories

Almeida, Tali Pires de 19 August 2013 (has links)
The focus of this study is the reconstruction of the pathways of immigrant women and their families, from Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru to Brazil, and aims to analyze the transnational social relations in the process of international migration. From interviews conducted in the city of São Paulo it was possible to capture the different pathways of international migration by giving voice to the subjects involved in this process. It was observed that, in the context of international migration, social relations expand beyond a single country. Between countries of origin and destination, migrants keep multiple connections, either through remittances, the contact with relatives or the maintenance of their native language and culture. The increased participation of women in international migration is analyzed by taking into account their different motivations and the networks they mobilize in the process of international migration. In this case, is interesting as well for the analysis how such factors that have influenced this process: social relations of gender, the participation of women in labor market, the productive organization of the clothing industry, the international migration legislation and the financial and media flows in the context of globalization.

Based on the Demographic Census of 1991, this work aims to understand some aspects of the female internal migration in Brasil during the decade of 1980. We analyze the displacements to all the States of the Federation, in particular those that have metropolitan areas. The specific analysis is addressed to three states of the Federation: Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Looking for connections between marital status, position on the family and characteristics of the displacements, we construct some variables for a better comprehension of the degree of autonomy dependence or association of the migrating movements. The results had shown the enormous potential of the information, especially those concerning marriage in the census of 1991, to deepen the knowledge on the subject. They also highlight the importance and specificity of women's displacements, which are not always related to their families / Doutorado / Doutor em Demografia
