"Gåtan Johanna Möller" : En diskursanalys om den svenska kvällspressens gestaltning av Johanna Möller / The Riddle Johanna Möller : A discourse analysis of the Swedish news portrayal of Johanna Möller.Larsson, Hanna, Willander, Frida January 2020 (has links)
The objective of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the lifetime sentenced Johanna Möller, who in 2016 persuaded her boyfriend to kill her parents, is portrayed in Swedish news journalism. We analyzed 46 articles published in Swedish tabloid describing her character after she received her sentence in August 2017. The research questions were: How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a character? How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a criminal? How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a woman? Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the associated three-dimensional model was conducted to find and dissect discourses in the articles. We carried out the analysis from a gender-related theoretical perspective and drew parallels to earlier research concerning media and crime. Through the analysis, five discourses could be identified; The Non-agent, The Evil Woman and The Good Boy, Temptress, The Bad Mother and She Who Never Does Right. Not seldom is Johanna Möller described as promiscuous, evil and manipulative. Her role as a mother is also being repeatedly criticized even though her actual crimes are not related to her motherhood. Accordingly, the journalists are constantly looking for an explanation for her abnormal behaviour and she is often being described as a cold hearted yet emotional person, which can be seen as a significant paradox in the portrayal of her. Our conclusion is that no matter Johanna Möller’s actual crimes, her role as a woman has become the most present aspect of her actions.

Risk assessment of child offenders : a South African social work perspectiveSmith, Edgar Eben 02 1900 (has links)
This study was interested in exploring the perceptions and experiences of social workers
about the nature and contents of conducting risk assessments with child offenders.
Considering the high level of crime and reoffending in South Africa, effective assessment is imperative. The goal of the research was to develop an in-depth understanding of how risk assessments of child offenders are conducted in practice. This was done by applying a qualitative research methodology. The study was conducted in the Western Cape. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was employed and data were analysed according to the framework provided by Tesch. The findings indicated that although prescribed instruments are used in the risk assessment of children in South Africa, they all have definite limitations. To enhance the quality of service rendered to child offenders, the development of a standardised risk assessment instrument is needed. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

“We are human too”: a narrative analysis of rehabilitation experiences by women classified as maximum security offenders in the Johannesburg Correctional CentreQhogwana, Sibulelo Agatha 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / While correctional centres are often associated with men, there is an increasing number of incarcerated women who have rehabilitation needs that are specific to their gender. Historically correctional centres have responded through offering rehabilitative programmes that stereotyped women offenders into socially constructed gender roles. Using a feminist criminology framework, the current study aimed to explore the subjective inner experience and meaning given by women classified as maximum security offenders to the rehabilitation processes in the Johannesburg Correctional Centre. Data was collected from 18 incarcerated women who are and were once classified as maximum offenders. A narrative analysis was used in understanding the data from the interviews. Women’s narratives in the current study reflect unique and common experiences with rehabilitation in the correctional centre. Being a maximum security offender presents a challenge of further perceived discrimination, alienation and isolation amongst women who describe limited involvement in rehabilitation as a result of this identity. Also highlighted in the study are challenges in implementing gender sensitive programming in a penal system infused with power dynamics; a discipline and punish narrative; patriarchy; binary view of gender and ethnocentrism. A continued reinforcement of traditional structures, systems and practices that seek to perpetuate gendered form of existence is also evident in the current study. Therefore, a need for the reformation of the correctional centre context and culture is suggested so as to respond in a manner that is not only gender sensitive, but also inclusive enough in recognising both in theory and in practice, the various locations of inequality in society that influence female criminality. The principle of Ubuntu demonstrated through caring, compassion and hospitability which empowers and edifies the other person through interrelatedness is one of the promising initiatives that can guide correctional centres and society in the implementation of gender sensitive programmes, while paying attention to the socio-cultural dynamics that influence women’s pathways to crime. / Psychology / D. Vrouemisdadiger : 'n ondersoek na die persepsies van 'n groep inwoners van PretoriaMunnik, Engela Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Vrouemisdaad is 'n komplekse sosiale verskynsel. 'n Aspek
van vrouemisdaad wat in die onderhawige proef skrif ondersoek
word, is om aan die hand van bestaande teoriee te probeer
verklaar waarom vroue soveel minder misdaad as mans pleeg.
verklaring dien. 'n Algemene verklaringsmodel vir vrouemisdaad
is egter opgestel wat terselfdertyd as samevatting
It can be said that female crime is a complex phenomenon.
An aspect of female crime that is investigated in this
thesis is to explain, with reference to existing theories,
why women commit fewer crimes than men. In an attempt to
answer this question, a quantitative investigation regarding
the attitude of society towards the female criminal as well
as a qualitative study of the available literature, was
conducted.
An intensive exploratory study
on female crime indicated that
and academics have a certain

the female
criminal which does not always correspond with the facts.
Although the number of female criminals has increased
through the years the extent of female crime, proportionally
to the population size, has remained constant, and the type
of crime committed by women has remained relatively
unchanged. It seems clear that no single theory or approach
can explain female crime, it can at best give a partial
explanation. An integrated explanation model for female
crime has been compiled which simultaneously serves as a
summary of selected theories.
By means of the archival research method a profile of the
female prisoner was compiled, to be used as a basis for the
researcher's scientific knowledge of this phenomenon.
Statistically significant relations were found to exist
between the characteristics of the white female prisoner's
marital status, number of children and fraud.
The quantitative investigation consisted of an analysis of
the responses of 516 respondents on an attitude scale. The
results of various statistical techniques show that the
research group, which represents respondents fr6m four
suburbs from structure plan cell 22 of Pretoria, reveals
certain attitudes and beliefs about the female criminal.
This attitude measurement indicated that differences in
perceptions regarding the female
in the white community do

exist. Furthermore

perceptions do not correlate

this research. Statistically
significant differences in attitude were found between male

Gender Disparity: A view of Florida’s Correction SystemUnknown Date (has links)
Disparity in sentence length has long been a topic of discussion (Spohn, 2009).
Though most research is aimed at disparity due to race, few studies utilize sex as a focal
point (Crow & Kunselman, 2009; Embry & Lyons, 2012; Gavin, 2014; Hartley, Kwak,
Park & Min-Sik Lee, 2011; Hasset-Walker, Lateano, Di Benedetto, 2014; Messing, 2008;
Steffensmeier, Ulmer & Kramer, 1998). The focus of this study is to examine the effect
of sex on sentence length, controlling for characteristics derived from the evil woman
hypothesis, chivalry hypothesis, and focal concerns theory, to discuss the potential
paternalism of the criminal justice system, which may cause potential sentence disparities
(Daly, 1989; Nagel & Hagen, 1983; Steffensmeir, Ulmer, & Kramer, 1998). The findings
indicate that women always receive a reduced sentence compared to male offenders,
regardless of the crime type of past criminal offenses. The statistically significant results
indicate that there is a need to review the criminal justice system and implement new
polices such as judicial review to help stymie the differing sentences given (Spohn, 2009). If not, offenders will continue to receive differing sentences, based solely on
extra-legal factors, such as the sex of the offender. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Female property crime offenders: Explanations from economic marginalization perspectiveSu, Susan Chih-Wen 01 January 2004 (has links)
This research explores whether women offenders who committed property crimes suffer from feminization of poverty, and social deprivations as asserted by the economic marginalization theory. Social deprivations include being a single parent with dependent children at home, being the main financial supporter of a household and being primary caretaker to minor children.
