The use of highway crossings to maintain landscape connectivity for moose and roe deer

Olsson, Mattias January 2007 (has links)

Increasingly wildlife managers and land managers are challenged to maintain the viability and connectivity among large mammal populations. Thus, it is important that effective highway crossings are identified and optimized with respect to construction cost, facilitation of ungulate movements, and ability to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. The use of exclusion fencing to reduce ungulate-vehicle collisions is commonly installed along Swedish highways. However, exclusion fences may pose a threat to the viability of wildlife populations because they serve as barriers to individual movements and may limit accessibility to resources. Various types of wildlife crossings intended to reduce road-kills and increase habitat connectivity across fenced highways have been constructed throughout the world. Previous studies have evaluated the importance of structure design and size for many ungulate species, but few studies involved moose (Alces alces) which is the target species for most large ungulate mitigations in Sweden. The results of the studies are intended to facilitate the development of wildlife crossings and conventional road passages to meet ungulate demands.

We monitored moose fitted with GPS radio collars and characterized their space and habitat use patterns in southwestern Sweden. Moose had seasonal differences in habitat selection within their home range, and generally preferred clear-cuts and early successional forest, boreal forest, and glades, but avoided agricultural areas and open water. We used infrared remote cameras, track surveys, and GPS telemetry to monitor the use of wildlife crossings and conventional road passages by moose and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). The upgrading of a non-fenced road to a fenced highway with three wildlife crossings decreased the moose movements across the highway by 67-89 %. Overpass use by moose and roe deer declined with increased traffic volume on the highway and both species walked during periods of low highway traffic volumes and shifted to trotting as traffic intensity increased. Low rates of human disturbances and proximity to forest edges increased use of highway underpasses by roe deer. Moose used large underpasses to a higher degree than small.

Fäkttränares upplevelse av feedback i tävlingssammanhang / Fencing coaches experience of feedback at competitions

Dordevic, Larisa January 2018 (has links)
Coaching can affect athletes' performance and psychological well-being through the communication and feedback that the coaches provide. Both internal and external factors affect the communication process and the effectiveness of the feedback. Objective: The objective of the study was to increase the knowledge associated with feedback during 1 minute breaks in direct elimination matches at fencing competitions. This, by gaining insight into how fencing coaches experience the feedback they give to their fencers. In addition, the purpose is to generate knowledge of factors in the communication process that affect feedback. Design: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Method: Three fencing coaches, with at least one epée fencer at top 8 on the national ranking list for senior men/women, were interviewed using a semi-structured guide. Questions about their communication and feedback in different scenarios, different situations, and factors were asked. Results: The coaches purpose of the feedback was to get the fencers into their individual zone of optimal functioning (IZOF). The coaches focused mostly on the psychological aspect and tactical feedback, with less focus on technique. The relationship between the coaches and fencers was percieved as one of the crucial factors for effective communication and feedback. Conclusions: As athletes are influenced by coaches' communication and feedback, it is important to understand what is sent and why, and also what the coaches percieve the fencers receive and the following experienced response. By gaining in-depth understanding of factors that affect, the coaches can make more active choices that lead to more effective communication and feedback, and thereby better performance.

Martial arts of medieval west : how was write and passed gestual knowledge at the end of Middle Ages.

Chaize, Pierre-Alexandre 30 September 2016 (has links)
If the issue of violence at the end of the medieval era was amply treated by historians, the techniques of that violence have not benefited from the same attention. If we know that the warriors fight, we do not know specifically how they fight, and especially how they transmit this knowledge. But martial arts, their exercise and education seem to be a reality in the Europe of the late Middle Ages. Since roaming fencing masters of the imperial space down to princes preparing a possible judicial duel, it's a whole section of the medieval gestures and body culture that this work seeks to explore.Through the analysis of a corpus of manuscripts, exclusively dedicated to the description of gestures and fighting techniques of the XVth and XVIth centuries, this study proposes to address the issue of martial arts from different angles. First, the establishment of a comprehensive catalog will show the reality of these documents. Through a quantitative analysis of the latter, the reader could then observe how this set of manuscripts builds, spreads and goes out gradually during the XVIth century. Through these groups of texts, the notion of cultural and martial tradition will be discussed in order to show the reader that these works are sometimes much more than technical abstracts. Finally, a presentation of the material and social environment in which these martial arts are practiced will allow a breakthrough in the place of these martial cultures in the history of the body and gesture to the late Middle Ages.

Freedom and Movement for Humans and Wild Animals : A journey along the German-Danish border fence / Frihet och Rörelse för Människor och Vilda Djur : En resa längs det Tysk-Danska gränsstängslet

Rogers, Francis January 2023 (has links)
In December 2019, the Danish government finished building a fence on the border with Germany. Although the fence was nominally intended to prevent wild boar entering Denmark, the government had recently acquired enough barbed wire to reinforce it against human migrants. I tell the story of the wild boar fence in the context of a global trend for escalating border enforcement and environmental change. I explore how border fences shape human and wild animal worlds, drawing on ecological data and using theory from environmental history, border and animal studies. In order to understand how humans and wild animals interact with the German-Danish border fence, I journeyed along it on foot in August 2022. My methodology is autobiographical – by walking the route myself and interviewing local experts and activists in the field, I explored how far humans and wild animals are free to move on the German-Danish border and what habitat fragmentation means for them. Without the ability to move, species worldwide, including humans, could be trapped as regions become uninhabitable due to climate change. A barbed wire border fence on the German-Danish border could prevent people, deer, wolves and other species from adapting to dramatic sea level rise and flooding. I argue that migration is the adaptation, rather than the crisis, and that mobility is something to be protected rather than supressed.

Abstract: Wheelchair Fencing begins by the adaptation of the equipment structures and organization from Conventional Fencing in order to make viable the practice of the modality by handicapped people. Although it is a .new. model of Fencing in an adapted way, the Wheelchair Fencing is not different form Conventional Fencing regarding to the weapons game in the ambit of the sportive duel. But because of the fact of the handicapped person presents a differentiated functional condition, it ended by creating some particular and exclusive characteristics of the technical movement execution in Fencing. Facing this factor we deduce that thinking the Fencing teaching to handicapped person only by the models of the common methods of Conventional Fencing in a certain way it can limit the learning conditions of these individuals in this modality. There comes the importance of the methods of teaching Wheelchair Fencing are structured from the dimensions and reality from the own adapted modality and functional condition of the handicapped athlete and not the other way around. Having the focus in the teaching pedagogy and developing itself under the perspective of a qualitative study the present investigation had as its aim characterize the Wheelchair Fencing aiming for pedagogical indicators to the teaching intervention in the modality. In this way the corpus of the study discussion was developed from three foci: The first one, Fencing in Brazil (2002 to 2008) broaches the historical process of development of this modality in Brazil from its implantation in 2002. The second, Characteristics of wheelchair fencing searches for delineating the particularities of the development of the equipments and games, as well as some characteristics that define the handicapped practitioner. The third and last chapter Pedagogy of teaching in wheelchair fencing presents the basic bases of the modality with pedagogical orientations to initiate the handicapped student. / Doutorado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Doutor em Educação Física

Vytipování genetické predispozice ovlivňující sportovní výkon se zaměřením na anaerobní aktivitu kosterní svalové činnosti / Identifying a genetic predisposition affecting sports performance, focusing on anaerobic activity of skeletal muscle activity

Balkó, Iva January 2017 (has links)
Title Identifying of genetic predisposition affecting sports performance focusing on anaerobic activity of skeletal muscle activity Problem Inborn predispositions of every individual are mainly influenced by the inherited genetic information in their DNA with the addition of external environmental factors. Based on the high variability of the inborn predictions in the form of phenotypic differences in the anatomy or physiology of an individual, it can be deduced on the connection between genetics and a specific sport talent. According to current scientific knowledge, anaerobic performance of the skeletal muscle tissue seems to be more genetically influenced. Anatomic and functional properties of the skeletal muscle are mainly influenced by genes, which have effect on the muscle fibre structure, blood storage, metabolism, neurotransmission, and muscle regeneration, etc. Fencing is a complex sport discipline where predispositions to speed and dynamic force play a key role. The sport performance in fencing, regardless of the type of weapon, is directly dependent on the interactions between the reaction of the fencer to the surrounding stimuli (visual, tactile), accuracy, tactical and technical skills, level of anticipation and overall physical a psychological readiness of the fencer. This work is...
