To Teach or Not to Teach? : An analysis of depiction of trauma in Waris Dirie’s and Cathleen Miller’s ”Desert Flower” and trauma narratives as sensitive issues in the EFL classroom

This essay examines Dirie’s and Miller’s Desert Flower and its depiction of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the effect that this violation has had on the narrator. The analysis has been conducted through the critical lens of trauma studies with emphasis on how bearing witness of traumatic events can serve as healing and empowerment in the struggle to end FGM. As the multicultural classroom has grown extensively over the past years, the demand for an intercultural awareness is placed on the schools, where the pupils are to be given the chance to develop an understanding and acceptance of people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This essay argues that, in spite of the dilemmas that often occur when teaching trauma as a sensitive and controversial issue, Desert Flower can in fact be used in the EFL classroom to engender intercultural awareness as well as offering the pupils a chance to develop self-actualization and social consciousness.

Grant Proposal for Constructing a Platform to End Sexual Harassment in Cairo’s Public Spaces

Sexual harassment in Cairo's public spaces is a symptom of infringement upon women’s rights in Egypt. Which is ingrained in the socioeconomic context, cultural, and traditional norms of the society. This grant proposal and background research proposes the construction of an extensive anti-sexual harassment infrastructure base in Egypt. The infrastructure platform is built on an evidence-based strategy and guided by recognized best practices. The platform is geared towards alleviating the symptoms of sexual harassment in Cairo's public spaces by constructing the urgently required, but currently missing, national mechanisms which are necessary to prevent, report, prosecute, and provide survivor services for victims of sexual harassment. In addition to the immediate perceived causes and effects of sexual harassment in Egypt there is also deep-rooted ecological factors that must be considered. These ecological factors, on an individual level, both biological and personal, include the fact that approximately 97% of Egyptian girls witness female gentile mutilation (FGM) in a publicized fashion between the ages 4 & 10. The practice of FGM, may have indoctrinated little boys and little girls, from an early age, that it is socially acceptable to inflict physical and psychological pain and suffering upon the female. FGM carried out at this age, as opposed to male circumcision, which is carried out during early infancy, allows for the neurological trauma that is generated leaves a lasting imprint. On a family level, 49% of adolescent rural girls marry before the age of 16. Marriage at this age is internationally recognized as sexual abuse, yet is common practice in rural Egypt. This practice sets a negative precedence for accommodating women's voices, this precedence may last a lifetime. On a community level, based on the most recent statistically significant surveys, approximately 70% of youth, both male and female, believe women are subordinate to men. This dictates that male must exercise control of resources and decision-making. And, that a girl must do what her brother says, even if he is younger. On a society level, 86% of surveyed male respondents indicated they would do “nothing” to try and stop sexual harassment if they witnessed it happening to a stranger in public. And finally, even from the moment they are born, the large majority of women in Egypt, because of religious dictates, inherit only half of what a male sibling would. Ceteris paribus, women in Egypt, just by virtue of being female, based on inheritance, are only able to afford a living standard, for themselves and their family that is only half as high as that of their male siblings living standard, unless of course their male sibling is benevolent enough to bestow upon them his own wealth. All these factors invariable, where they apply, undermine women's status in society and negatively impact attitudes of protecting women from harm and violence, in all its forms, which includes sexual harassment in public spaces.

Analytical Solution Of A Crack Problem In A Radially Graded Fgm

The objective of this study is to determine stress intensity factors (SIFs) for a crack in a radially graded FGM layer on a substrate. Functionally graded coating with an edge crack perpendicular to the interface and a homogeneous substrate are bonded together. In order to make the problem analytically tractable, geometry is modeled as an FGM strip attached to a homogeneous layer. Introducing the elastic foundation underneath the homogeneous layer, an FGM coating on a thin walled cylinder can be modeled. At first, governing equations are obtained from stress displacement and equilibrium equations. Then using an assumed form of solution in terms of Fourier Transforms for displacements and applying the boundary conditions, a singular integral equation is obtained for the mode-I problem. Solving this singular integral equation numerically, stress intensity factors are obtained as functions of crack length, strip thicknesses and inhomogeneity parameter.

Processing, Characterization And Evaluation Of A Functionally Graded Ai - 4.6% Cu Alloy

In some applications the stress across the entire cross-section of a component is not uniform but varies with position. For example, maximum shear stress is highest at the inner surface of a thick-walled cylinder subjected to uniform internal pressure and it decreases continuously towards the outer surface. In such applications it would be more appropriate for the component, too, to have varying strength across the cross-section matching with the stress profile it is subjected to. The present work deals with obtaining such a functionally graded material (FGM), characterizing it and testing its mechanical properties in compression. Differential aging heat treatment was used to produce the functionally graded material in a precipitation hardenable Al-4.6%Cu alloy by changing the microstructure. Temperature gradient furnace was used to achieve the gradation in microstructure from one end of the sample to the other end by differential aging of the solution treated sample. Mechanical properties can be varied in any precipitation hardenable alloy by means of producing various precipitates, which will form during the aging sequence. In Al-4.6%Cu alloy one end of the solution treated sample was aged for 38 hours at 170°C and the other end at 70°C by means of a temperature gradient furnace in which the coil density varies along the axis of the furnace. Thus we achieved a difference in mechanical properties from 70°C side to 170°C side as the precipitation during differential aging varied from GP zones at one end to θ' precipitate at the other end. Characterization was done on isothermally aged samples and in FGM using XRD (X-ray diffraction) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). XRD result showed that the final equilibrium precipitate θ was not formed in any of the heat-treated samples. TEM result showed the various precipitation sequences from GP zones to θ' in the isothermally aged samples and the same was confirmed in the gradient sample by cutting the samples form 70°C side towards the 170°C side and doing TEM on each sample. The properties of FGM in compression were studied using a 9mmx9mmxl8mm-compression sample using DARTEC machine and it was compared with those of isothermally aged samples. For 70°C the 0.2% proof stress was 141MPa and for 170°C it was 226MPa. The corresponding ductility values at the point of inflection on the engineering stress-strain curve for 70°C sample was higher (33%) than the 170°C (22%) sample. For the gradient sample it gave a proof stress of 163MPa and a ductility value of 30%.

The swedish law against female genital mutilation (FGM) prohibits procedures that removes parts of the female genitalia and thereby makes permanent changes in the body. The problem with the wording of the law is that it may also apply to the western phenomenon cosmetic genital surgery. This paper therefore examines if cosmetic genital surgery should be covered by the swedish law against FGM, by making a critical comparing analysis. The paper begins with comparing FGM with cosmetic genital surgery to prove that there are more similarities than differences between the procedures. By using the theoretical perspectives universalism and postcolonialism, the paper then examines why, particularly in the West, there is a different approach to FGM than to cosmetic genital surgery, regardless of the similarities of the procedures. Further the paper also examines consent and why consent to FGM is seen as illegitimate while consent to cosmetic genital surgery is seen as legitimate. On basis of the critical comparing analysis the paper then argues: that the procedures cosmetic genital surgery and FGM are very much alike; that cosmetic genital surgery is accepted over FGM because it is more familiar in the West and; that consent should be as illegitimate when given to cosmetic genital surgery as when given to FGM. Thus the conclusion of the paper is that cosmetic genital surgery should be covered by the swedish law against FGM.

Investigation of deposition parameters in ultrasonic spray pyrolysis for fabrication of solid oxide fuel cell cathode

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) research is currently underway to improve performance, cost and durability by lowering the operating temperature to ~600°C. One approach is to design fabrication processes capable of tailoring desirable cathode microstructures to enhance mass and charge transfer properties through the porous medium. The aim of this study is to develop a cost effective fabrication technique for deposition of novel microstructures, specifically, functionally graded thin films of LSM oxide with porosity graded structure for use as IT- SOFCs cathode. Spray pyrolysis method was chosen as a low-temperature processing technique for deposition of porous LSM films onto dense YSZ substrates. The effort was directed toward the optimization of the processing conditions for deposition of high quality LSM films with variety of morphologies in the range of dense to porous microstructures. Results of optimization studies on spray parameters revealed that the substrate surface temperature is the most critical parameter influencing the roughness and morphology, porosity, cracking and crystallinity of the film. Physical and chemical properties of deposited thin films such as porosity, morphology, phase crystallinity and compositional homogeneity have shown to be extensively dependent on the deposition temperature as well as solution flow rate and the type of precursor solution among other parameters. The LSM film prepared from organo-metallic precursor and organic solvent showed a homogeneous crack-free microstructure before and after heat treatment as opposed to aqueous solution. Also, increasing the deposition temperature and the solution flow rate, in the specific range of 520-580 ℃ and 0.73-1.58 ml/min, respectively, leads to change the microstructure from a dense to a highly porous film. Taking the advantage of simplicity of spray pyrolysis technique combined with using metal-organic compounds, the conventional ultrasonic spray system was modified to a novel system whereby highly crystalline multi-layered porosity graded LSM cathode with columnar morphology and good electrical conductivity in the range of 500-700 °C was fabricated through a multi-step spray and via applying optimum combination of spray parameters. This achievement for the current graded LSM cathode would allow its use in IT-SOFCs.

What is the life of Kenyan women like? In Kenya, like many African countries, a deep paradox has been created. Kenyan women enjoy the benefits of modern life, yet their lives are largely determined by customary law. Although the majority of Kenyan women do not live in traditional society, they are still perceived within their traditional roles. Modern society has different requirements than the traditional ones, however only the segment of -self-confident and informed citizens are aware of their rights and are able to assert their rights. While women compose the majority of the Kenyan population (52%) and play an active role in the development of the whole society, Kenya still continues to remain a deep patriarchal society with a very low regard of the status of women. Women in Kenya are unequal and under-privileged in most areas of their lives. This situation is propounded by the current legal and political system, as well as by prevailing socio-cultural factors. The dissertation examines the different roles of the Kenyan woman - as a daughter, a wife and a mother. The main philosophical ideology which the African society is based upon is the continuation of life and keeping the patrilineal lineage where dead ancestors play the same role as children born to the family. The multiscale wavelet finite element method for structural dynamics

The Wavelet Finite Element Method (WFEM) involves combining the versatile wavelet analysis with the classical Finite Element Method (FEM) by utilizing the wavelet scaling functions as interpolating functions; providing an alternative to the conventional polynomial interpolation functions used in classical FEM. Wavelet analysis as a tool applied in WFEM has grown in popularity over the past decade and a half and the WFEM has demonstrated potential prowess to overcome some difficulties and limitations of FEM. This is particular for problems with regions of the solution domain where the gradient of the field variables are expected to vary fast or suddenly, leading to higher computational costs and/or inaccurate results. The properties of some of the various wavelet families such as compact support, multiresolution analysis (MRA), vanishing moments and the “two-scale” relations, make the use of wavelets in WFEM advantageous, particularly in the analysis of problems with strong nonlinearities, singularities and material property variations present. The wavelet based finite elements (WFEs) presented in this study, conceptually based on previous works, are constructed using the Daubechies and B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) wavelet families. These two wavelet families possess the desired properties of multiresolution, compact support, the “two scale” relations and vanishing moments. The rod, beam and planar bar WFEs are used to study structural static and dynamic problems (moving load) via numerical examples. The dynamic analysis of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is further carried out through a new modified wavelet based finite element formulation using the Daubechies and BSWI wavelets, tailored for such classes of composite materials that have their properties varying spatially. Consequently, a modified algorithm of the multiscale Daubechies connection coefficients used in the formulation of the FGM elemental matrices and load vectors in wavelet space is presented and implemented in the formulation of the WFEs. The approach allows for the computation of the integral of the products of the Daubechies functions, and/or their derivatives, for different Daubechies function orders. The effects of varying the material distribution of a functionally graded (FG) beam on the natural frequency and dynamic response when subjected to a moving load for different velocity profiles are analysed. The dynamic responses of a FG beam resting on a viscoelastic foundation are also analysed for different material distributions, velocity and viscous damping profiles. The approximate solutions of the WFEM converge to the exact solution when the order and/or multiresolution scale of the WFE are increased. The results demonstrate that the Daubechies and B-spline based WFE solutions are highly accurate and require less number of elements than FEM due to the multiresolution property of WFEM. Furthermore, the applied moving load velocities and viscous damping influence the effects of varying the material distribution of FG beams on the dynamic response. Additional aspects of WFEM such as, the effect of altering the layout of the WFE and selection of the order of wavelet families to analyse static problems, are also presented in this study.
