The Expandable Display: an ad hoc grid of autonomous displays

MacDougall, James Scott 29 April 2014 (has links)
Networking multiple "smart" displays together is an affordable way of creating large high-resolution display systems. In this work I propose a new structure and data distribution paradigm for displays of this nature. I model my work on the peer-to-peer style of content distribution, as opposed to the traditional client-server model for this kind of system. In taking a peer-to-peer approach, I present a low-cost and scalable system without the inherent constraints imposed by the client-server model. I present a new class of applications specifically designed for this peer-to-peer style of display system, and provide an easy-to-use framework for developers to use in creating this type of system. / Graduate / 0984

Exploring Engaging Instructions: Cases of University Professors and Corporate Trainers in the United States

Arghode, Vishal 03 October 2013 (has links)
This journal-article-formatted dissertation explores university professors’ and trainers’ practices in engaging students in their classrooms. By systematically examining the current literature related to engaging instruction, I identified the core components of engaging instruction, as well as the strategies to effectively engage students. Despite the paucity of available empirical studies investigating the ‘engagement’ concept for professors and trainers, the available studies were examined to understand how researchers conceptualized and operationalized “effective engagement.” Findings from this literature review provided a theoretical foundation for the research. I explored the perceptions and practices of college professors regarding engaging instruction. I interviewed seven professors face-to-face. Subsequently, I analyzed the interview transcripts using the constant comparative method. Findings from the study showed that the participants had varied views. Nevertheless, they agreed that an engaging professor must focus on learning; consider various aspects of students’ personal development including their cognitive, social, and emotional development; and take care of different student learning styles, for example, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Participants expressed the importance of student engagement. Body language, verbal and non-verbal cues, and eye contact were the main parameters used by the participants to evaluate student engagement. Participants also emphasized the importance of asking questions, judging from student responses and assessing instructional effectiveness by evaluating the questions asked by students. Similarly, I also explored seven trainers’ perceptions on engaging instruction and the strategies they used for engaging trainees by conducting face-to-face interviews. I utilized the constant comparison method to analyze the interview transcripts. Major findings indicate that trainers should be trainee-centered in instruction, accommodate different learning styles, elicit trainee participation by creating an encouraging class environment, and connect with trainees by building rapport early in a training session.

Formatets betydelse : hur arbetsprocesser och produktionsvillkor formar journalistiken i webb-tv

Gunnarsson, Peter January 2012 (has links)
New technology has created new opportunities for journalists working with web TV. Changes in the work processes have led to new professional roles. According to the theory of media logic such events become news that suits media organizations and working conditions. How does the media logic affect the editorial workflow and how does it affect professional roles? In light of my own experience in various roles in television journalism, I examine how the web TV format shapes the work of journalists. Based on previous research in this area, this thesis also examines the professional role video reporters play and what this new role means in relation to other professional roles in journalism. Previous research shows that the video reporter role offers both opportunities and threats to journalism. (Brännström 2008, Wallace 2009, Nygren & Zuiderveld, 2011, and others). This study, based on participant observation at a web TV editorial desk, shows that the media logic of the format of web TV affects the work process in several ways. First, in terms of how news is produced in the field, and how news is created and re-created from existing material at the production desk. Inasmuch that consumers are increasingly becoming potential producers with cellphone cameras, there is a potential video journalist in every cellphone owner. The pace of work drives journalists to publish at a faster pace, which in turn means less time for reflection. Often the job of the video reporter is to select an in-point and out-point in an interview quickly and publish! This survey also highlights the video reporter’s role in relation to other journalists that work at a web editorial desk. The result shows that there is a difference between video reporters and writing reporters and also that there are differences within the group of video reporters. The study also provides an insight into the journalistic challenges at hand with new differentiations and combinations of roles in journalism within the field of web TV.In light of the observations derived from the material, one can say that the work of the video reporter at a web TV editorial desk is very much molded into a shape, the shape of practice governing the work, or in other words, the media logic controls what kind of video journalism reporters exercise in the production of online web TV.

Evaluation of a Floating Point Acoustic Echo Canceller Implementation

Dahlberg, Anders January 2007 (has links)
This master thesis consists of implementation and evaluation of an AEC, Acoustic Echo Canceller, algorithm in a floating-point architecture. The most important question this thesis will try to answer is to determine benefits or drawbacks of using a floating-point architecture, relative a fixed-point architecture, to do AEC. In a telephony system there is two common forms of echo, line echo and acoustic echo. Acoustic echo is introduced by sound emanating from a loudspeaker, e.g. in a handsfree or speakerphone, being picked up by a microphone and then sent back to the source. The problem with this feedback is that the far-end speaker will hear one, or multiple, time-delayed version(s) of her own speech. This time-delayed version of speech is usually perceived as both confusing and annoying unless removed by the use of AEC. In this master thesis the performance of a floating-point version of a normalized least-mean-square AEC algorithm was evaluated in an environment designed and implemented to approximate live telephony calls. An instruction-set simulator and assembler available at the initiation of this master thesis were extended to enable; zero-overhead loops, modular addressing, post-increment of registers and register-write forwarding. With these improvements a bit-true assembly version was implemented capable of real-time AEC requiring 15 million instructions per second. A solution using as few as eight mantissa bits, in an external format used when storing data in memory, was found to have an insignificant effect on the selected AEC implementation’s performance. Due to the relatively low memory requirement of the selected AEC algorithm, the use of a small external format has a minor effect on the required memory size. In total this indicates that the possible reduction of the memory requirement and related energy consumption, does not justify the added complexity and energy consumption of using a floating-point architecture for the selected algorithm. Use of a floating-point format can still be advantageous in speech-related signal processing when the introduced time delay by a subband, or a similar frequency domain, solution is unacceptable. Speech algorithms that have high memory use and small introduced delay requirements are a good candidate for a floating-point digital signal processor architecture.

Steganografi i bilder : En studie om bildformat och visuella bildrepresentationens påverkan vid lagring av data med hjälp av en steganografisk metod

Stensmar, Isak January 2016 (has links)
Sammanhang. / Context. By using image steganography it is possible to hide a large amount of data without making big differences to the initial picture. One commonly used method is Least Significant Bit (LSB), which often is considered one of the first method implemented and used in Image Steganography. Apart from the method, the user also have a choice when deciding what picture he or she should use as the carrier of information. What people often try to accomplish is to have a very complex method that hides the data in an efficient way, but forgets about the picture used as a carrier. In the end, all measurements will be done on the picture. Objectives. This study will investigate if different image formats, BMP, PNG, JPEG and TIFF, have an impact on the differences when comparing the original picture with the modified, given that data is stored with a steganographic method and is gradually increased. The study will also investigate if what the picture visually represent will have an effect on the measurements. Methods. An extended method of the Least Significant Bit method will be implemented and used to create different pictures with different kinds of image formats. An experiment will investigate these formats by taking measurements with MSE (Mean Squared Error), PSNR (Peek Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and SSIM (Structural Similarity). Results. When comparing different formats one could say that JPEG showed better performance by having a lower differential value between each test, by looking at the graphs and tables. BMP, PNG and TIFF had minimal changes between each other for each test. As for the visual representation of the pictures, two pictures showed a higher differential value after each test than the remaining three. Conclusions. The results from the experiment showed that which compression method a format uses will have an impact on the measurement. The results also showed that the pictures’ visual representation could have some impact on the measurement of a picture but more data is needed to conclude this theory.

Les nouveaux formats sonores dans le champ de l'esthetique du cinéma / New sounds in the field of the esthetics in the cinema

Ouédraogo, Adama 05 December 2013 (has links)
Introduced to the cinema a few decades after the birth of this art, sound has always felt the place is hers. Even today, although much progress as synchronization with the image, the acceptance of sound in film creation, improved sound quality, the spatial-wrap are among its other elements greet. The latter, specializing and envelope with the audiovisual films seem to be left to thank you for firms that compete in the market. Documents that address this area are hardly except in some few lines reviewed. Questions remains unanswered why the use of multichannel sound in cinema? What could be the reasons for the continued aesthetic according to Aristotelian and Kantian theories of art?

Everyday Decay

Jacobs, Abageal 01 May 2020 (has links)
The medium format photographs created in conjunction with my senior thesis exhibit, Everyday Decay, use texture, line, intimate framing, warm color palettes, and layering to explore an aspect of the everyday landscape that we interact with often but generally ignore. The choice of medium and subject of decay creates a sense of the past, aided by the warm tones that imply affinity and nostalgia.

Påverkar formatet användarupplevelsen? : En kvalitativ jämförelse av användarupplevelsen gällande formaten DVD/Blu-Ray och streamingtjänster / Does the format affect the user experience? : A qualitative comparison of the user experience regarding the formats DVD/Blu-Ray and streaming services

Pålsson Abrahamsson, Anton January 2021 (has links)
This thesis concerns the questions of how the format affect the user experience. The formats which have been researched are streaming services and DVD/Blu-Ray, as they deliver the same type of media. After a qualitative analysis of eight interviews with available informants, it was demonstrated that DVD/Blu-Ray was generally regarded as aged and less available than streamingservices.
