Trauma and fortitude amongst undergraduate students with disabilities

Saban, Sameera January 2021 (has links)
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Despite the increase in South African trauma studies over the years, few studies focus on distinct groups, such the group represented by students with disabilities (SWD) - 1% of the total student population at universities. Recent studies established widespread exposure to trauma amongst the general student population. This study investigated exposure to trauma amongst SWD and the role of fortitude in psychological outcomes. Fortitude is defined as the ability to manage stress well and to remain emotionally steady. The objectives of this study included: i) assessing the prevalence of exposure to trauma amongst SWD; ii) investigating the association between such exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); iii) investigating the role of fortitude in this association; and iv) identifying demographic correlation concerning exposure to trauma and PTSD.

Ambrose's Teaching and Exemplars on the Virtues of Prudence and Fortitude and their Relevance to Contempoary Christians in Nigeria

Ojomah, Elias Attah January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Brian Dunkle / Thesis advisor: Catherine M. Mooney / Every generation encounters moral problems. Thus, designing an ethical standard or a moral guide for any generation has been a major concern for great minds who believe in a genuine pursuit of happiness through virtuous life. Ancient philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics debated on this in their time by acknowledging essential virtues such as wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance as moral principles. Marcus Aurelius Cicero followed the moral principles of these ancient Greek philosophers and, to encourage young Romans aspiring for leadership positions, wrote a book titled De Officiis, a handbook on duty and responsibility. Ambrose of Milan, a statesman turned churchman, who also studied the pagan virtues of these Greek philosopher and the work of Cicero, wrote De Officiis Ministrorum, a handbook on duty for clergy, religious, and Christians of his diocese. Ambrose adopted and adapted the pagan virtues into Christian virtues. The virtues of prudence and courage are critical virtues among the cardinal virtues that Ambrose analyzed in his work using biblical exemplars as models for Christians of his time. The current situation in Nigeria needs a reconsideration as corruption and other moral vices have occupied the central stage in Nigeria. Highlighting Ambrose's virtue theory and teaching on prudence and courage as part of daily catechesis and homily will be necessary for the development of moral consciousness and values among the Christians and non-Christians in Nigeria. This work traces the historical development of virtue theory from ancient times to the time of Ambrose. It uses historical analysis to bring forward the Christian virtues taught by Ambrose and their exemplars, and argues for emulation of these tremendous biblical exemplars and suggests modern and local exemplars from the Nigerian perspective and Africa at large. / Thesis (STL) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. Filipino Fortitude: Towards a Contextual yet Critical Social Virtue Ethics

Jalandoni, Monica January 2015 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James F. Keenan / The dissertation will contribute not only to an appreciation and critical evaluation of fortitude in the Philippine context, but has a wider significance for the practice of virtue ethics. The thesis is that (a) virtue must be analyzed contextually, in specific social contexts, as well as (b) in dependence upon the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of the virtues, that (c) social virtue as well as individual virtue exists, and that (d) this social, contextual, Aristotelian-Thomistic approach to virtue provides a basis for a social-ethical critical evaluation and prescription for particular societies. If virtue ethics is to generate sound social normative claims, its argument needs to be based not merely upon the classical tradition, but also on a socially, historically and culturally aware analysis of the way virtues are fleshed out in context. This dissertation will argue that the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition still has much to teach us about courage or fortitude, and in dialogue with contemporary social science still provides legitimate moral insights into fortitude today. Second, it will argue that virtue takes on a particular color or texture in specific social contexts, and will argue this in relation to the Filipino context: Philippine fortitude is Thomistic, with unique attributes of resilience and joy. Third, it will argue that it is necessary to engage in a social-ethical critique of social virtue, arguing that there are deficiencies in Philippine fortitude in that it lacks a crucial link with justice. This critical evaluation will lead to the elaboration of an ethical and social imperative for the Filipino people to develop good anger to fuel a less passive, more assertive fortitude that is ordered to justice. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College. Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Apocalyptic Fortitude

Burris, Suzanne Lynn 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Fortitude, 1560, a print from the Seven Virtues series. Fortitude stands out as an anomaly within the cycle because it contains several allusions to the Book of Revelation. The linkage of Fortitude to the writings of St. John is important because it challenges previous iconographic and iconological analyses of the composition. Analysis of Fortitude's compositional elements is provided, along with an examination of the virtue tradition. Additionally, an exploration of sixteenth-century apocalypticism is included, as well as an examination of the artistic influences that may have inspired Bruegel. This thesis concludes that Fortitude's apocalyptic allusions do not seem unusual for an artist familiar with St. John's prophecies, influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, and living in an age of apocalypticism.

Psychological well-being, race and school setting : a comparative study among South African teachers in the SABPA study / Illasha Kok

Kok, Illasha January 2013 (has links)
Teaching is a stressful occupation. Teacher stress can be described as the experiences by teachers of psychological distress such as anxiety, depression and nervousness and languishing, resulting from aspects of their workload and school setting. Stress manifests itself in various ways including psychological, emotional, and social changes. Teachers demonstrate individual discrepancies in their responses to stressors. South Africa is as a multicultural environment with previously segregated school settings based on race. Research revealed that it is possible that the functionality of schools, usually related to school setting, has implications for the psychological well-being of teachers. As comparative study between group White teacher-Black teacher data are limited, this study analysed aspects of psychological well-being to show that race, associated with school setting, can be pervasive determinate of positive mental health. The current study, which is a secondary analysis of the Sympathetic Activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans (SABPA) 2008-2009 data, aimed at explaining the similarities and differences by identifying aspects most likely to influence psychological well-being between a White teacher group and a Black teacher group in the North West Province in South Africa. One research question was formulated to reach the purpose of the research and is: How does the psychological well-being of Black and White teachers in different school settings in the North West Province in the South African context compare? A sample consisting of White (208) and Black (200) teachers completed the Mental Health Continuum – Short Form (MHC-SF; Keyes, 2002) to measure positive mental health: the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9; Kroenke, Spitzer, & Williams, 2001) to measure depression, the Fortitude Questionnaire (FORQ: Pretorius, 1998) to measure social support, and the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI, Boyle, Borg, Falzon, & Baglioni Jr., 1995) during the SABPA study. Data from various self-reported psychological questionnaires completed by the two teacher groups were included and analysed by means of bivariate correlations of the two teacher groups, t-test comparisons, cross tabulations of categories of positive mental health as well as of depression, and multiple regression. Significant associations were found for the following: teacher stress related to general resources (TSI), teacher stress related to teaching and classroom management (TSI), positive self-appraisal, social support from family, social support from friends and others (FORQ), emotional well-being, and psychological well-being (MHC), for both the White and Black teacher groups. According to regression analysis, in the White teacher group, 11.9% of total variance in teacher stress was accounted for by depression while positive metal health explained 7% of teacher stress. For the Black teacher group, only 2.4% of the total variance of teacher stress was explained by depression and 0.1% by positive mental health. The conclusion is that all teachers experience stress and depression, but according to these results, the effect of stress on well-being seems to be higher among the White group. Although the Black teachers report higher levels of stress, they flourish. In closing, from this comparative study, it was recommended that data between resource availability and school setting pertaining to White-Black teacher groups matched by psychological well-being need to be obtained. Much needed consideration should be given to the development of interventions that explore aspects of psychological well-being of teachers in different school settings. Furthermore, cultural background in the school setting that contributes towards psychological well-being should be considered and applied to guide interventions in the North West Province in South Africa. / MSc (Research Psychology)|cNorth-West University, Potchefstroom Campus|d2014

The research was done at the University of Ponta Grossa Vegetable Biotechnology Lab in april/march of 2007. The fruits were immerse during five seconds in water solution of resveratrol in doses of 1000;2000 and 3000 mg.L-¹ to cultivate Fuyu and in doses of 4000;5000 and 6000 mg.L-¹ to cultivate Giombo. The fruits were stocked in a cold chamber at 0±2º C and ur 95±2%. The Fuyu fruits stood stocked for 0;15;30 and 45 days and the Giombo fruits for 0; 7; 15; 21 and 28 days and then took off refrigeration and maintaned for 2 days in a aclimation chamber at 25ºC to simulate the comercial environment. The fruits were evaluated on weight loss, fortitude, total soluble solids, pulp Ph, total acidity and vitamin C. It was observed that the resveratrol didn't preserve the pulp fortitude and didn't maintain the Giombo or Fuyu fruits weight. The soluble solids grade varied from 16 to 22ºBrix and the acidity of the fruits varied from Fuyu to Giombo. The pH value from the Giombo fruits stayed in the range of 5,13 to 5,54 , and the Fuyu fruits between 5,0 and 5,92. The resveratrol treatment affected in a negative way the vitamin C grades.

Spiritual Fortitude and Mental Health amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Zhang, Hansong 08 1900 (has links)
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global traumatic stressor affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Traumatic events often cause significant resource loss and negatively affect mental health and emotional well-being. In the wake of trauma, many people draw on religious or spiritual faith to cope with adversity and suffering. One construct that has received increased attention within the field of religious/spiritual coping is spiritual fortitude (SF). SF refers to the one's ability to consistently draw on spiritual resources to transcend negative emotions in the face of stressors. In this study, I recruited 255 participants who had lived during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants completed measures of resource loss, religious/spiritual struggles, SF, religious commitment, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The overall results suggested participants utilized a wide range of coping strategies (e.g., religious/spiritual, social, health practice) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both resource loss and religious/spiritual struggles were positively associated with mental distress. SF buffered the deleterious relationship between resource loss and mental distress. Specifically, for individuals high in SF, the relationship between resource loss and mental distress was weaker than for individuals low in SF.

Investigating the relationship between fortitude and academic achievement in students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Rahim, Mohamed Zubair. January 2007 (has links)
<p>This research study employs a strengths perspective. This means that, instead of the traditional deficits or pathology-based approach of focusing on weaknesses, the focus is on positive outcomes. Fortitude, more specifically, is the strength gained from appraising oneself, one&rsquo / s family, and one&rsquo / s social support, in a positive manner. This strength equips people to cope successfully in stressful situations. Fortitude as a construct in the strengths perspective promises to give insight into student success because it takes more than one level of analysis into account. The current research study investigates whether there is a link between fortitude and academic achievement in first year students at the University of the Western Cape.</p>
