desenvolvimento e a
aplicação de técnicas capazes de aumentar a economicidade
dos poços. A
do poço (proppant
características do propante.
produtividade do poço e
prolongando sua vida útil. / [en] The viability of the exploration of an oil field is
associated with the
productive characteristics of the formation, guaranteed by
means of the
development and application of techniques capable of
increasing the productivity
and the economy of the oil fields. The currently most used
stimulation technique
is hydraulic fracturing, by which one of the main stages
is the injection of a
granular material called proppant to keep the fracture
open and enhance fracture
permeability. This technique presents as a drawback the
phenomenon known as
proppant flowback. The proppant is carried to the inside
of the well causing many
problems which can lead to production interruption. Some
empirical and
theoretical models for its prediction have been developed,
however the
mechanisms that govern it are still not clearly explained.
Parameters that are
related to proppant flowback are fracture width, closure
pressure, drag force and
proppant characteristics. Proppant flowback prediction is
not included in today s
procedures of the hydraulic fracturing project. In the
present work a
computational tool for proppant stability analysis was
developed based on
empirical and theoretical prediction models. This tool has
an object oriented
architecture written in Java language. The influence of
the introduction of
restrictions to prevent proppant production in the
hydraulic fracture design
procedure was also investigated. In this way, it is aimed
to obtain hydraulic
fracturing projects by which proppant flowback is
prevented in field situations
assuring well productivity and extending its activity
period.

[en] The development and deployment of shale gas formations around the world are relatively recent, starting in the United Stated in the late 1990. From the results obtained with the application of hydraulic fracturing as a method of stimulation, the study and evaluation of other prospects of shale gas in others places in the world was encouraged. However, the analysis, study and characterization of this type of reservoirs are difficult, because it must be taken into account several factors such as geology, mineralogy, petrophysics, geochemistry among others. Hydraulic fracturing is a complicated hydro-mechanical coupled process, with high difficulty degree especially in shale gas reservoir, where natural fractures exist. A numerical study is conducted to investigate the hydromechanical behavior of a natural fracture during fluid injection. UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) software based on discrete elements method was employed to numerical modeling development. UDEC has the ability to model the hydro-mechanical behavior of a fracture including phenomena like fracture enlargement, closure, slippage, and dilation under contact or separation condition. In this numerical investigation, numerical reservoir models, with random natural fractures through a distribution voronoi were created aiming to represent the network complexity of natural fractures present in shale gas formations. The numerical study results show that the hydromechanical system behavior is strongly dependent on the parameters variation such as in situ stress, fluid fracturing viscosity and fluid injection rate. Therefore, these results provide a better understanding of fracturing mechanisms and pressure response of a hydraulic fracturing treatment in a non- conventional naturally fractured reservoir.

[en] One of the main objectives of petroleum engineering is to develop and apply techniques capable of increasing the productivity of oil wells, including the stimulation of well by hydraulic fracturing operations. Studies on the propagation of fractures can be done analytically for some simplified situations involving
homogeneity, isotropy and simple boundary conditions of the geological medium, or by the application of numerical methods, such as the finite element method, for more complex cases. The present research presents a numerical analysis of hydraulic fracturing using the extended finite element method (XFEM), in
conjunction with the damage constitutive model of Cohesive Zone (MZC). In the extended finite element method the fracture geometry becomes independent of the mesh, allowing the propagation of the fracture through the domain without successive mesh generations as necessary in the conventional finite element
method. The computed numerical results were compared with asymptotic analytical solutions in the limit case in which the propagation regime is dominated by the rigidity of the rock with good compatibility. In addition, this study investigates the effects of different parameters of the injection fluid and the
fracture propagation characteristics when the interface between different geological layers is inclined, shows dependency between the angle of inclination with the properties of the material and the in-situ stresses.

[en] ANALYSIS OF HYDRAULIC FRACTURE SIMULATORS IN DISCRETE FRACTURE NETWORKS / [pt] ANÁLISE DE SIMULADORES DE FRATURAMENTO HIDRÁULICO EM REDES DE FRATURAS DISCRETAS13 April 2021 (has links)
doutrinas do DFN.
[en] This dissertation aimed to present the main differences between commercial
software for hydraulic fracturing with the development of a three - dimensional
discrete fracture network and conventional fracture design software, presenting an
analysis of the effects of the variation of the main parameters that influence the
simulation results on a real case (Total Leakoff Coefficient and Spacing between
Fracture Plans). As a clarification of the main unconventional fracturing scenario,
the description and main properties of shale gas/oil were presented. Following the
theories of the orthogonal geometries and the importance of the natural fractures
that support the doctrines of the DFN. While in the conventional fracture, a planar
fracture model with two symmetrical wings is used in relation to the well, in the
shale gas/oil fracturing, the currently accepted model is the creation/activation of
a dominant fracture and a network of parallel fractures and fractures orthogonal to
the dominant. The modeling assumptions, the additional equations in relation to
the conventional hydraulic fracture, the criteria adopted for the solution of these
equations and the additional input data related to the fracture network were
presented. To illustrate the conventional modeling differences and discrete
fracture network, we have presented the governing equations of a conventional
pseudo-three-dimensional simulator (P3D) and the governing equations of the
simulator with the creation of a fracture network studied (MShale). Since
additional input data is the biggest challenge for hydraulic fracturing designers, a
chapter on them has been presented, with an example of actual commented data
input and a chapter describing the simulator data output. It was concluded that the
total filtration coefficient has a great impact on the geometry and conductivity of
the dominant fracture and the network of secondary fractures, also influencing the
concentrations of proppant, as it was also proved that the interaction between
fractures corresponds to the variation of the assumed spacing between the fracture
planes. It was verified that conventional fracture design software should not be
used in scenarios of non-conventional reservoirs, because the results are
unrealistic. It was pointed out deficiencies of the software of hydraulic fracturing
with analyzed network of fractures, as the consideration of constant coefficient of
filtration throughout the operation. It is hoped that this dissertation will be useful
to hydraulic fracturing designers when dealing with unconventional reservoirs
such as shale gas / oil and to stimulate the interest of the academy on this subject.

[pt] ANÁLISE DE SENSIBILIDADE NA MODELAGEM 2D DA CONTENÇÃO DE FRATURAS HIDRÁULICAS / [en] SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS IN 2D MODELING OF HYDRAULIC FRACTURE CONTAINMENTRAFAEL FONSECA DE MESQUITA 29 December 2021 (has links)
[en] This master thesis analyzes the parameter s variation on the hydraulic frac-ture s propagation importance and the influence of these parameters on fracture containment. The numerical experiments were performed in a 2D model using a finite element simulator with sequential hydrodynamic coupling, having the sta-tionary behavior of the processes involved as premise. Validation tests were ini-tially performed for the numerical solutions used in this thesis from cases which solutions are well known. Then, effects of pore pressure variations, stress state, rock properties, hydraulic fracture opening intervals, thermal effects, and damage to the permoporous formation were used to evaluate the hydraulic fracture containment. At first, the effects were evaluated separately, then sorted for pair combinations, so they could be analyzed. These analyzes led to the conclusion that the most influen-tial factor for the hydraulic fracture initial propagation in the cap rock (first meters) is the reservoir’s minimum confinement stress value, and the vertical propagation continuity in the sealing rock is dominated by the stress contrast between reservoir and cap rocks. However, other parameters influence the hydraulic fracturing con-tainment and should be considered for this type of study, especially those that will serve as input for decision-making.

[en] The hydraulic fracturing process has been widely used to improve oil and gas recovery in the petroleum industry. During the fluid injection, the desired section of rock formation is fractured in order to increase the permeability of the medium that can facilitate the flow of oil to a producing well. However, this process can lead to potential environmental risks such as seismic activity, unwanted fractures in cap layers by water injection, water contamination and gas leakage making primordial to develop a rigorous study in order to reduce this environmental risks associated to hydraulic fracturing. One of the studies developed to design the hydraulic fracturing is computational simulation to determine the fluid volume and hydraulic horsepower required in order to produce the wanted fracture geometry (length, opening and height). The numerical modelling of fracturing process by using fully coupled cohesive element hydraulic can be carried out considering either a steady state or a transient analysis, which modify the fracture geometry and injection pressure. In this work, the KGD model is simulated in transient and steady analysis for two cases: (1) injection in a single layer formation and (2) injection in tri-layered formation with stress and porepressure contrast between them. The numerical simulation of a hydraulic fracturing is carried out using the finite element method with the zone cohesive model in Abaqus whose results are compared with analytical solutions of toughness-dominated propagation regime for the one layer formation model and Simonson and Fung analytical solutions for tri-layered formations model.

[pt] ANÁLISE DE SENSIBILIDADE DA INFLUÊNCIA DOS ESPAÇAMENTOS ENTRE FRATURAMENTOS NA CONSTRUÇÃO DA REDE DE FRATURAS COMPLEXAS PARA EXPLORAÇÃO E PRODUÇÃO DE SHALE GAS/ SHALE OIL / [en] SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF SPACING BETWEEN FRACTURES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF COMPLEX FRACTURE NETWORK TO EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION OF SHALE GAS/SHALE OILFERNANDO BASTOS FERNANDES 30 May 2019 (has links)
[en] Shale gas/shale oil reservoirs have a high degree of anisotropy due to the presence of natural fractures (NFs) and also the orientation of beddings. Thus, hydraulically induced fractures (HFs) interact with NFs and generate a network of fractures with complex morphology. The existence of NFs modifies the stress field in the shale and directly influences the geomechanical behavior of the HFs during the fracturing operation, generating branches in the dominant fracture and contributing to the complex network of fractures. The construction of a network of fractures significantly increases the conductivity of the formation, as it connects previously isolated fractures and pores, thus increasing the productivity index of the wells and providing greater economic viability in the shale gas/oil reservoir designs. This work presents a sensitivity analysis of the influence of fracturing spacing in the construction of the network of complex fractures generated in shales, aiming to understand how this parameter modifies the volume of stimulated reservoir and the distribution of propant in the network of fractures, in order to avoid problems in this step of the design and thus, maintain the economical viability of the network. The literature review includes the main published works on this subject and the non-conventional fracture models (UFM) used to model the network of complex fractures. Sensitivity analysis will be performed using the MShale software, which uses a stochastic of the discrete fracture network (DFN) method and numerically solves the equilibrium equations and poroelasticity for shales in terms of effective stresses, in addition to mass conservation equations, linear momentum and energy with viscous dissipation for creeping flow. For the analysis, the other parameters that influence the construction of the network will be kept constant and only the spacing between fracturings will suffer variation.

[en] AN XFEM ELEMENT TO MODEL INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND NATURAL FRACTURES IN POROUS ROCKS / [pt] UM ELEMENTO XFEM PARA MODELAR INTERSECÇÕES ENTRE FRATURAS HIDRÁULICAS E NATURAIS EM ROCHAS POROSASRUI FRANCISCO PEREIRA MOITAL LOUREIRO DA CRUZ 19 December 2018 (has links)
[pt] Um elevado número de reservatórios de hidrocarbonetos é naturalmente
fraturado.
A formulação do elemento inclui interseção
[en] A large number of hydrocarbon reservoirs are naturally fractured. When
subjected to hydraulic fracturing treatments, the natural fractures may influence the
propagation of the hydraulic fracture, which can grow in a complicated manner
creating complex fracture networks in the reservoir. In order to better understand
and simulate such phenomena an element based on the eXtended Finite Element
Method is proposed. The element formulation comprises fracture intersection and
crossing, fracture frictional behaviour, fully coupled behaviour between
displacements, pore and fracture fluid pressure, leak-off from the fracture to the
surrounding medium and the eventual loss of pressure due to filter cake. The
theoretical background and implementation aspects are presented. A set of analyses
is performed in order to validate different features of the implemented element.
Finally, the results of four practical applications are analysed and discussed: two
laboratory hydraulic fracture tests, hydraulic fracture propagation in a multifractured
synthetic model and percolation through a dam fractured foundation. It is
concluded that the implemented code provides very good predictions of the coupled
fluid-rock fracture behaviour and is capable of correctly simulating the interaction
between hydraulic and natural fractures. Moreover, it is shown that the hydraulic
behaviour of the models and the intersection between fractures are very sensible to
parameters such as differential in-situ stresses, angle between fractures, initial
hydraulic aperture and fracture face transversal conductivity.

[en] Valkó and Oligney developed a model to estimate fracture evolution using a direct interpretation of the measured bottom hole pressure curve during a fracpack operation. The only input data needed to use the model are the usual records of the job, available during and after the operation. Considering radial fracture geometry and using simplified equations of flow and geomechanics, the model estimates a packing radius of the fracture using the slope of the increasing bottom hole pressure curve during the tip screenout period. In this work, Valkó and Oligney method is enhanced with the inclusion of state equations for the fracture growth and for the leakoff process in order to improve the model, but still maintaining minimum input data. The method is also extended to other two-dimensional fracture geometries, PKN and KGD. To apply the enhanced method, eight fracpack operation data were used. The results obtained are fracture propagation, width growth and fluid efficiency in time as well as the final proppant distribution
in the fracture. To validate these results, this work used two commercial simulators with three-dimensional models. The case studies show that the modifications done to Valkó and Oligney method approximate the two-dimensional model results to the ones obtained using the commercial simulators with threedimensional models. Furthermore, the comparison between the application of the model for each fracture geometry and the commercial simulators results confirmed the expected tendency for the fracture geometry during a fracpack operation, which is a radial fracture.

[en] The presented study proposes robust numerical models to simulate the phenomena present in fracture propagation and fluid migration problems in fractured media. The proposed method allows studying the effect of some primary parameters on hydraulic and natural fracture interaction. A new 3D hydromechanical formulation for an enhanced dual-porosity/dual-permeability model is proposed to represent a fractured porous formation more realistically in reservoir simulations. The new model allows the study of the impacts of natural fractures with different orientations at multiple scales on the hydromechanical behavior of the reservoir. Finally, this research work proposes a new methodology that integrates a robust fracture propagation model and reservoir simulation, improving the evaluation of production performance. We simulate several hydraulic fracturing scenarios for the assessment of the cumulative production of the reservoir. Moreover, we combined discrete fracture and enhanced dual porosity-dual permeability models to study the effects of fractures of multiple lengths on the hydraulically stimulated reservoir. The developed models are compared against experimental tests, analytical and numerical solutions. The comparative results show excellent agreement and validate the fully coupled hydromechanical formulations. From the numerical results, it was possible to identify the dominant parameters that influence hydraulic fracturing and the production performance of the hydraulically stimulated deposits.
