Cities of Comrades: Urban Disasters and the Formation of the North American Progressive State

Remes, Jacob Aaron Carliner January 2010 (has links)

A fire in Salem, Mass., in 1914 and an explosion in Halifax, N.S., in 1917 provide an opportunity to explore working-class institutions and organizations in the United States-Canada borderlands. In a historical moment in which the state greatly expanded its responsibility to give protection and rescue to its citizens, after these two disasters ordinary survivors preferred to depend on their friends, neighbors, and family members. This dissertation examines which institutions--including formal organizations like unions and fraternal societies as well as informal groups like families and neighborhoods--were most relevant and useful to working-class survivors. Families, neighbors, friends, and coworkers had patterns and traditions of self-help, informal order, and solidarity that they developed before crisis hit their cities. Those traditions were put to unusual purposes and extreme stress when the disasters happened. They were also challenged by new agents of the state, who were given extraordinary powers in the wake of the disasters. This dissertation describes how the working-class people who most directly experienced the disasters understood them and their cities starkly differently than the professionalized relief authorities.

Using a wide array of sources--including government documents, published accounts, archived ephemeral, oral histories, photographs, newspapers in two languages, and the case files of the Halifax Relief Commission--the dissertation describes how elites imposed a progressive state on what they imagined to be a fractured and chaotic social landscape. It argues that "the people" for whom reformers claimed to speak had their own durable, alternative modes of support and rescue that they quickly and effectively mobilized in times of crisis, but which remained illegible to elites. By demonstrating the personal, ideological, political, and practical ties between New England and Nova Scotia and Quebec, it also emphasizes the importance of studying American and Canadian history together, not only comparatively but as a transnational, North American whole.
/ Dissertation

Giguère, Sabrina 07 1900 (has links)
Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is a complex issue, particularly when it is comorbid with a severe mental disorder (SMD). On one hand, no pharmacotherapy has been approved for its treatment. On the other hand, existing psychotherapies offer, at best, low efficacy that is not sustained over time. The emergence of virtual reality (VR) in psychiatry could increase efficacy, given the potential it has demonstrated for a variety of psychiatric conditions. To date, no intervention incorporating VR for the treatment of CUD has been developed. The Avatar intervention for CUD is an innovative approach using VR as a therapeutic tool to learn and practice in real-time when cravings and emotions are of similar intensity to their everyday lives. This eight-session intervention uses techniques from commonly used therapeutic approaches (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing). During immersive sessions, participants interacted with an avatar played by the therapist, representing a significant person intrinsically linked with their consumption. This pilot clinical trial was designed to assess efficacy at short-term, feasibility, and acceptability in 19 participants with a dual diagnosis of SMD and CUD. Results showed a significant moderate reduction in the amount of cannabis consumed (d=0.545, p=0.017), which was confirmed by the quantification of THC-COOH in urine. Regarding the severity of TLUC and motivation to change, a small (d=0.474; p=0.046) and moderate (d=0.523; p=0.046) effect size were obtained, respectively. No significant effect was obtained for quality of life, and psychiatric symptoms remained stable. Once participants have completed the 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-ups, medium- and long-term results will also be assessed. A single-blind randomized controlled trial is currently underway to compare the Avatar intervention for CUD with a conventional addiction intervention.

Laugier, Manuel 05 1900 (has links)
Dairy production in Quebec differs from other parts of North America by its organization around relatively small family farms. This reality results from a particular agricultural history, marked by the territorial development inherited from the seigneurial system as well as the implementation of supply management coupled with significant federal and provincial protectionism. Nevertheless, since the end of the 20th century, the Quebec dairy sector has faced the challenge of liberalizing trade agreements and questions of animal and environmental ethics. In this context, the milking robot is presented by manufacturers and public authorities as a means of solving these issues. Indeed, if several studies concerning the milking robot indicate that many producers derive certain benefits from it in terms of economic results and quality of life, others also show that its implementation and its impacts fluctuate according to the political and sociocultural context of the regions studied. This research aims to deepen the study of this agricultural equipment by considering its symbolic dimensions at the scale of the Montérégie region. By adopting a sociographic approach to the technique, the objective is to shed light on the social relations and power issues that arise around the tool. In particular, the study shows that the milking robot makes it possible to valorize a certain industrial ethos of the producers mobilized around the family transmission of the farm as well as in the symbolic struggle against the industrial firms dominating the Quebec dairy sector. The concept of rooting capital is proposed in order to address the expression of feelings of pride and responsibility related to family and professional legacies. Tensions arise between the aspirations of local anchorage and mobility of the actors, as well as among the different temporalities that manifest themselves around the object, mainly between the desire for permanent optimization of the production system and the moral and financial obligations concerning the past and the future of these families.
