Overview of Redundancy Analysis and Partial Linear Squares and Their Extension to the Frequency Domain

Liu, Jinyi Jr 30 April 2011 (has links)
Applied statisticians are often faced with the problem of dealing with high dimensional data sets when attempting to describe the variability of a single set of variables, or trying to predict the variation of one set of variables from another. In this study, two data reduction methods are described: Redundancy Analysis and Partial Least Squares. A hybrid approach developed by Bougeard et al., (2007) and called Continuum Redundancy-Partial Least Squares, is described. All three methods are extended to the frequency domain in order to allow the lower dimensional subspace used to describe the variability to change with frequency. To illustrate and compare the three methods, and their frequency dependent generalizations, an idealized coupled atmosphere-ocean model is introduced in state space form. This model provides explicit expressions for the covariance and cross spectral matrices required by the various methods; this allows the strengths and weaknesses of the methods to be identified.

Side Channel Analysis of a Java-based Contactless Smart Card

Mateos Santillan, Edgar January 2012 (has links)
Smart cards are widely used in different areas of modern life including identification, banking, and transportation cards. Some types of cards are able to store data and process information as well. A number of them can run cryptographic algorithms to enhance the security of their transactions and it is usually believed that the information and values stored in them are completely safe. However, this is generally not the case due to the threat of the side channel. Side channel analysis is the process of obtaining additional information from the internal activity of a physical device beyond that allowed by its specifications. There exist different techniques to attempt to obtain information from a cryptosystem using other ways than the normally permitted. This thesis presents a series of experiments intended to study the side channel from a particular type of smart card, known as Java Cards. This investigation uses the well known technique, Correlation Analysis, and a new type of side channel attack called fast correlation in the frequency domain to study the side channel of Java Cards. This research presents a giant magnetoresistor (GMR) probe and for the first time, this type of sensor is used to investigate the side channel. A novel setup designed for studying the side channel of smart cards is described and two metrics used to evaluate the analysis results are presented. After testing the GMR probe and methodology on electronic devices executing the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), such as 8 bit microcontrollers and 128 bit AES implementations on FPGAs, these techniques were applied to analyse two different models of Java Cards working in the contactless mode. The results show that successful attacks on a software implementation of AES running on both models of Java Cards are possible.

Frequency Domain Computation Of Turbofan Exhaust Noise Radiation

Ulusoy, Yavuz Barbaros 01 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, acoustic noise radiation through a duct in frequency domain is analyzed. Frequency domain linearized Euler equations are solved for turbofan exhaust noise propagation and radiation. The geometry in studied cases is assumed as axisymmetric. The acoustic waves are decomposed into periodic azimuthal modes. Characteristic boundary conditions, and buffer zone boundary conditions are employed. Iterative type pseudo time integration is employed. Nonuniform background flow effect on the radiation pattern is experienced. All computations are performed in parallel using MPI library routines in computer cluster. Results proved that the one with the buffer zone has a better radiation characteristic than the characteristic one because of absorbtion of spurious waves. It is seen that the efficiency of the buffer zone is frequency dependent.

Sub-Nyquist Sampling and Super-Resolution Imaging

Mulleti, Satish January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The Shannon sampling framework is widely used for discrete representation of analog bandlimited signals, starting from samples taken at the Nyquist rate. In many practical applications, signals are not bandlimited. In order to accommodate such signals within the Shannon-Nyquist framework, one typically passes the signal through an anti-aliasing filter, which essentially performs bandlimiting. In applications such as RADAR, SONAR, ultrasound imaging, optical coherence to-mography, multiband signal communication, wideband spectrum sensing, etc., the signals to be sampled have a certain structure, which could manifest in one of the following forms: (i) sparsity or parsimony in a certain bases; (ii) shift-invariant representation; (iii) multi-band spectrum; (iv) finite rate of innovation property, etc.. By using such structure as a prior, one could devise efficient sampling strategies that operate at sub-Nyquist rates. In this Ph.D. thesis, we consider the problem of sampling and reconstruction of finite-rate-of-innovation (FRI) signals, which fall in one of the two classes: (i) Sum-of-weighted and time-shifted (SWTS) pulses; and (ii) Sum-of-weighted exponential (SWE). Finite-rate-of-innovation signals are not necessarily bandlimited, but they are specified by a finite number of free parameters per unit time interval. Hence, the FRI reconstruction problem could be solved by estimating the parameters starting from measurements on the signal. Typically, parameter estimation is done using high-resolution spectral estimation (HRSE) techniques such as the annihilating filter, matrix pencil method, estimation of signal parameter via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT), etc.. The sampling issues include design of the sampling kernel and choice of the sampling grid structure. Following a frequency-domain reconstruction approach, we propose a novel technique to design compactly supported sampling kernels. The key idea is to cancel aliasing at certain set of uniformly spaced frequencies and make sure that the rest of the frequency response is specified such that the kernel follows the Paley-Wiener criterion for compactly supported functions. To assess the robustness in the presence of noise, we consider a particular class of the proposed kernel whose impulse response has the form of sum of modulated splines (SMS). In the presence of continuous-time and digital noise cases, we show that the reconstruction accuracy is improved by 5 to 25 dB by using the SMS kernel compared with the state-of-the-art compactly supported kernels. Apart from noise robustness, the SMS kernel also has polynomial-exponential reproducing property where the exponents are harmonically related. An interesting feature of the SMS kernel, in contrast with E-splines, is that its support is independent of the number of exponentials. In a typical SWTS signal reconstruction mechanism, first, the SWTS signal is trans formed to a SWE signal followed by uniform sampling, and then discrete-domain annihilation is applied for parameter estimation. In this thesis, we develop a continuous-time annihilation approach using the shift operator for estimating the parameters of SWE signals. Instead of using uniform sampling-based HRSE techniques, operator-based annihilation allows us to estimate parameters from structured non-uniform samples (SNS), and gives more accurate parameters estimates. On the application front, we first consider the problem of curve fitting and curve completion, specifically, ellipse fitting to uniform or non-uniform samples. In general, the ellipse fitting problem is solved by minimizing distance metrics such as the algebraic distance, geometric distance, etc.. It is known that when the samples are measured from an incomplete ellipse, such fitting techniques tend to estimate biased ellipse parameters and the estimated ellipses are relatively smaller than the ground truth. By taking into account the FRI property of an ellipse, we show how accurate ellipse fitting can be performed even to data measured from a partial ellipse. Our fitting technique first estimates the underlying sampling rate using annihilating filter and then carries out least-squares regression to estimate the ellipse parameters. The estimated ellipses have lesser bias compared with the state-of-the-art methods and the mean-squared error is lesser by about 2 to 10 dB. We show applications of ellipse fitting in iris images starting from partial edge contours. We found that the proposed method is able to localize iris/pupil more accurately compared with conventional methods. In a related application, we demonstrate curve completion to partial ellipses drawn on a touch-screen tablet. We also applied the FRI principle to imaging applications such as frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In these applications, the resolution is limited by the uncertainty principle, which, in turn, is limited by the number of measurements. By establishing the FRI property of the measurements, we show that one could attain super-resolved tomograms and NMR spectra by using the same or lesser number of samples compared with the classical Fourier-based techniques. In the case of FDOCT, by assuming a piecewise-constant refractive index of the specimen, we show that the measurements have SWE form. We show how super-resolved tomograms could be achieved using SNS-based reconstruction technique. To demonstrate clinical relevance, we consider FDOCT measurements obtained from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor inner/outer segments (IS/OS) of the retina. We show that the proposed method is able to resolve the RPE and IS/OS layers by using only 40% of the available samples. In the context of NMR spectroscopy, the measured signal or free induction decay (FID) can be modelled as a SWE signal. Due to the exponential decay, the FIDs are non-stationary. Hence, one cannot directly apply autocorrelation-based methods such as ESPRIT. We develop DEESPRIT, a counterpart of ESPRIT for decaying exponentials. We consider FID measurements taken from amino acid mixture and show that the proposed method is able to resolve two closely spaced frequencies by using only 40% of the measurements. In summary, this thesis focuses on various aspects of sub-Nyquist sampling and demonstrates concrete applications to super-resolution imaging.

Characterization of Impulse Noise and Hazard Analysis of Impulse Noise Induced Hearing Loss using AHAAH Modeling

Wu, Qing 01 August 2014 (has links)
Millions of people across the world are suffering from noise induced hearing loss (NIHL), especially under working conditions of either continuous Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise that might affect human's hearing function. Impulse noise is a typical non-Gaussian noise exposure in military and industry, and generates severe hearing loss problem. This study mainly focuses on characterization of impulse noise using digital signal analysis method and prediction of the auditory hazard of impulse noise induced hearing loss by the Auditory Hazard Assessment Algorithm for Humans (AHAAH) modeling. A digital noise exposure system has been developed to produce impulse noises with peak sound pressure level (SPL) up to 160 dB. The characterization of impulse noise generated by the system has been investigated and analyzed in both time and frequency domains. Furthermore, the effects of key parameters of impulse noise on auditory risk unit (ARU) are investigated using both simulated and experimental measured impulse noise signals in the AHAAH model. The results showed that the ARUs increased monotonically with the peak pressure (both P+ and P-) increasing. With increasing of the time duration, the ARUs increased first and then decreased, and the peak of ARUs appeared at about t = 0.2 ms (for both t+ and t-). In addition, the auditory hazard of experimental measured impulse noises signals demonstrated a monotonically increasing relationship between ARUs and system voltages.

Uma comparação entre metodologias para cálculo da vida em fadiga no domínio do tempo e da frequência com aplicação na simulação dinâmica de implementos rodoviários

Marques, Julian Marcell Enzveiler January 2017 (has links)
Currently, the industry demand for the construction of complex structures is a consequence of the fierce competition, mainly between companies from semi-trailers segments. With the support of computational tools, based on the Finite Element Method, it is possible to size these structures submitted to random requests varying in time. In this case, it is common to perform dynamic simulations in the time domain to use a Finite Element model of plate or beam and thus obtain the stresses at the critical sites of interest. However, time domain analyses capture tensions and deformations with good accuracy, but they are often computationally expensive. In most of the studied cases, fatigue life is fundamental to predict structural failures of high proportions, such as main beam collapse of the chassis structure of a semi-trailer. Therefore, the semi-trailer industry segments is interested in the frequency domain, in order to reduce the computational cost of dynamic simulation no matter of the Finite Element model. With this purpose, the present work proposes a comparison between methodologies which are able to estimate the fatigue life in time domain and frequency, of a simple and second case, more complex, that of the industry. The different Finite Element models and methods of calculating fatigue life in frequency domain are compared and discussed using the classic time domain fatigue life calculation method as reference. The methodology takes into account the different Finite Elements are used, the simplifications of the structural models used and potential kinematic constraints applied to the model. The comparison is made with not only the following analyses: modal, harmonic, transient, spectral, but also computational routines. Thus, the analyst can select meshes with a viable amount of degrees of freedom making dynamic simulations possible, in addition, to its predict the fatigue life in time domain for simple and complex models. Based on the results, it was verified that the fatigue life estimates in frequency domain, for complex models, do not present reliable results yet. Therefore, recommendations are suggested.

This work presents the study, implementation and application of the two techniques for the modal parameters identification using only response data: Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) and Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD). The SSI is based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the orthogonal projection of the future output row space in the past output row space. After the completion of the SVD of the orthogonal projection, is possible to get the state space model of the structure and the modal parameters are estimated directly through the eigenvalues and eigenvectors decomposition of the dynamic matrix. The FDD is based on the SVD of the output power spectral density matrix in the frequencies lines around a mode. The first singular vector obtained for each frequency line contains the respective information about this mode and the corresponding spectral density function leads to an equivalent system of one degree of freedom (1 DOF), allowing the calculation of the parameters of the mode. The methods are evaluated using simulated and experimental data. The results show that the techniques implemented are capable to estimate the modal parameters of structures using only response data.

Análise probabilística de durabilidade aplicada a veículos de carga rodoviária. / Probabilistic analysis of durability applied to semi-trailer tank vehicle.

Augusto Borella Hougaz 17 August 2005 (has links)
In structural design, forecast correctly the part’s lifetime is vital to reduce costs and to estimate the periods of warranty and of maintenance. On the other hand, in many situations, this forecast is difficult because many parameters are not under the engineers control, some examples of this kind of parameters are: the loads acting in the part and the fatigue properties of the material. Therefore, it is possible to apply finite element analysis with a probabilistic approach in fatigue lifetime calculation, what results in reliability values that can be used as design criterion in order to give a broader meaning to the analyses and its results. Hence, this text describes and establishes the relationship between the main aspects of the probabilistic approach in fatigue lifetime calculation, resulting in the definition of a complete procedure that is divided in the following steps: 1. Modeling of the vehicle’s load aiming spectral analysis in the frequency domain; 2. Calculation procedure of the probability density function of Rainflow stress amplitudes applied in the structure upon using the spectral analysis in frequency domain results; 3. Probabilistic approach of fatigue properties of the material; 4. Fatigue reliability calculation through the use of the previous results provided by the probabilistic approach of stresses and of fatigue properties of the material; 5. Implementation of the proposed methodology for fatigue lifetime prediction of a semi-trailer tank. The conclusion confirms the fact of having much more structural failures in Brazilian vehicles than in European ones. This can be said because the results show that the worsening of the roads quality increases the fatigue failure probability. Finally, when implemented in a post-processing software for finite element programs that automatically transforms the stresses standard deviation, obtained by spectral analysis, in the fatigue failure probability, the proposed methodology in the present thesis may, more adequately, work as design criterion based on the probabilistic evaluation of the vehicles durability, upon applying well established structural reliability theory.
