Fredholm theory in general Banach algebras

Heymann, Retha 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Mathematics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a study of a generalisation, due to R. Harte (see [9]), of Fredholm theory in the context of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces to a theory in a Banach algebra setting. A bounded linear operator T on a Banach space X is Fredholm if it has closed range and the dimension of its kernel as well as the dimension of the quotient space X/T(X) are finite. The index of a Fredholm operator is the integer dim T−1(0)−dimX/T(X). Weyl operators are those Fredholm operators of which the index is zero. Browder operators are Fredholm operators with finite ascent and descent. Harte’s generalisation is motivated by Atkinson’s theorem, according to which a bounded linear operator on a Banach space is Fredholm if and only if its coset is invertible in the Banach algebra L(X) /K(X), where L(X) is the Banach algebra of bounded linear operators on X and K(X) the two-sided ideal of compact linear operators in L(X). By Harte’s definition, an element a of a Banach algebra A is Fredholm relative to a Banach algebra homomorphism T : A ! B if Ta is invertible in B. Furthermore, an element of the form a + b where a is invertible in A and b is in the kernel of T is called Weyl relative to T and if ab = ba as well, the element is called Browder. Harte consequently introduced spectra corresponding to the sets of Fredholm, Weyl and Browder elements, respectively. He obtained several interesting inclusion results of these sets and their spectra as well as some spectral mapping and inclusion results. We also convey a related result due to Harte which was obtained by using the exponential spectrum. We show what H. du T. Mouton and H. Raubenheimer found when they considered two homomorphisms. They also introduced Ruston and almost Ruston elements which led to an interesting result related to work by B. Aupetit. Finally, we introduce the notions of upper and lower semi-regularities – concepts due to V. M¨uller. M¨uller obtained spectral inclusion results for spectra corresponding to upper and lower semi-regularities. We could use them to recover certain spectral mapping and inclusion results obtained earlier in the thesis, and some could even be improved. Volgens Harte se definisie is ’n element a van ’n Banach-algebra A Fredholm relatief tot ’n Banach-algebrahomomorfisme T : A ! B as Ta inverteerbaar is in B. Verder word ’n Weyl-element relatief tot ’n Banach-algebrahomomorfisme T : A !

EFFECTS OF CHOICE AND NO CHOICE OF PREFERRED ENGAGMENT STIMULI TASKS ON THE OFF-TASK BEHAVIOR OF

Schlenker-Korb, Rebecca Gail 01 August 2014 (has links)
Problem behavior, such as off &ndash - &ndash task behavior, is one of the most commonly cited challenges competing with school readiness skills for young children with disabilities. This study demonstrated how a functional behavior assessment can be conducted in a school setting to determine the functional relation between off &ndash - &ndash task behavior and academic engagement stimuli for three kindergarten students at &ndash - &ndash risk of academic failure. Indirect and descriptive behavior assessments were first conducted to determine the hypothesized function of off &ndash - &ndash task behavior. Two experimental functional analysis conditions were then constructed to confirm the hypothesized function. Results demonstrated that when preferred academic engagement stimuli were used during instruction, escape &ndash - &ndash maintained off &ndash - &ndash task behavior decreased substantially. Therefore, the use of preferred stimuli as an instructional support may have abolished the value of escape as reinforcement for off &ndash - &ndash task behavior. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Interpolação integral e estimadores de densidade /

Cruz, Flaviani Cristina da Silva. January 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Eraldo Pereira Marinho / Banca: Geraldo Nunes Silva / Banca: . This mastered dissertation aims at the analytical study of integral interpolation techniques - based on the theory of distribution, also known as generalized function theory - and its applications the reconstruction of images formed by particles (noise image) and the anisotropic form of the fundamental equations of smoothed particle hydrodynamics, well known as SPH. The application to image processing is a particular case of the interpolation technique used in SPH. The original image is fragmented in the form of particles (in two dimensions), randomly drawn from the píxels of the original image, whose density is proportional to the gray scale of each neighboring píxel. Then a reconstruction of the image is made through anisotropic interpolation, evidencing that structural details of the original context are better recovered than the corresponding isotropic technique. Although we do not directly perform fluid mechanics simulations in this work, what is proposed here is a review of the fundamental equations of the SPH simulation technique for the anisotropic case. The interpolations presented in this work were made from a normalized smoothing kernel, defined as cubic-B-spline, which is of analytic class C2 / Mestre

Functional analysis of Ssc1 and Iba57 proteins in \kur{Trypanosoma brucei} / Functional analysis of Ssc1 and Iba57 proteins in \kur{Trypanosoma brucei}

SKALICKÝ, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
Aim of this thesis was to shed light on the function(s) of Iba57 and Ssc1 proteins in both life cycle stages of T. brucei using RNA interference. Depletion of Ssc1 resulted in severe grow phenotype, decrease in activities of iron-sulphur cluster-containing enzyme aconitase but no increase in oxidative stress sensitivity or accumulation of ROS in mitochondrion. Down regulation of Iba57, specialized maturation factor of aconitase and homoaconitase, lead to depletion of aconitase, destabilization of Isa1 and increased sensitivity to oxidative stress and accumulation of ROS in both stages.
