Impact des pratiques de gestion sur la qualité du fourrage dans des parcours méditerranéens du sud de la France : liens avec la décomposition de la litière / Impact of management practices on forage quality in Mediterranean rangelands of southern France : relationships with litter decomposability

Le but de cette thèse était de comprendre les liens entre deux processus de dégradation de la matière organique : la digestibilité du fourrage par les herbivores domestiques et la décomposabilité de la litière par la microfaune du sol. Nous avons fait les hypothèses suivantes : (i) les pratiques de gestion affectent la digestibilité et la décomposabilité des espèces, et (ii) en accord avec l’hypothèse de dominance, celles des communautés via des changements de leur structure fonctionnelle ; (iii) digestibilité et décomposabilité peuvent être estimées par un même « marqueur fonctionnel » facile à mesurer aux niveaux d’organisation de l’espèce et de la communauté. Ce travail a été réalisé dans des parcours du domaine expérimental de La Fage situés sur le Causse du Larzac (Aveyron). Nos résultats ont montré un effet des pratiques de gestion sur la digestibilité et la décomposabilité des différents organes (feuille, tige, partie reproductrice) : les espèces de parcours pâturés et fertilisés ont présenté une digestibilité et décomposabilité supérieures à celles des espèces de parcours uniquement pâturés. Des mesures effectuées à deux dates de récolte ont permis de mettre en évidence une baisse de digestibilité au cours du printemps dans les différents organes, principalement causée par une augmentation de leur teneur en fibre. Une relation positive entre digestibilité et décomposabilité a été montrée pour les feuilles et les tiges dans les deux types de parcours. Cette relation était fortement dépendante de la teneur en fibres des organes, qui peut être estimée de façon fiable par la teneur en matière sèche de ceux-ci : plus la teneur en fibres était élevée, plus la teneur en matière sèche était forte, induisant une faible digestibilité et une faible décomposabilité. Ces résultats ont également été démontrés à l’échelle des communautés pour la digestibilité et la décomposabilité, confirmant l’hypothèse de dominance : les propriétés des écosystèmes peuvent être prédites à partir de traits des espèces dominantes des différents parcours, et en particulier de leur teneur en matière sèche. La teneur en matière sèche est donc un marqueur puissant et facile à mesurer pour estimer la digestibilité et la décomposabilité de systèmes complexes. L’approche fonctionnelle de la diversité biologique basée sur les traits peut donc être utilisée comme un outil de diagnostic du fonctionnement des prairies permanentes afin d’adapter les pratiques de gestion selon les objectifs des éleveurs. / The aim of this thesis was to understand links between two degradation processes of organic matter: the forage digestibility by domestic herbivores and the decomposability of litter by soil microfauna. We hypothesized that: (i) management regimes influenced species digestibility and decomposability, and (ii) in agreement with the dominance hypothesis, those of communities through changes in their functional structure; (iii) digestibility and decomposability can be estimated by the same “functional marker” both at the species and community levels. This study was conducted in rangelands from the La Fage research station located on the Larzac Causse (Aveyron). Our results showed an effect of management regimes on the digestibility and decomposability of different organs (leaf, stem, reproductive part): species from grazed and fertilized grasslands had higher digestibility and decomposability than those from grasslands solely grazed. Measurements conducted at two harvest dates showed a decrease of digestibility of the different organs during spring, mostly due to an increase in fibre concentration. A positive relationship between digestibility and decomposability was found for leaves and stems in both management regimes. This relationship was strongly dependent on organ fibre content, which could be safely estimated by the dry matter content of these different organs: the higher their concentration in structural tissues, the higher their dry matter content, and the lower their digestibility and decomposability. These results were also found at the community level for both properties, thereby validating the dominance hypothesis: the digestibility and decomposability of communities could be predicted from the traits of dominant species found in each management regime, in particular their dry matter content. Dry matter content therefore appears as a powerful and easy to measure marker to estimate the digestibility and decomposability of complex systems. The trait-based approach to plant functional diversity can be used as a diagnostic tool to assess rangeland functioning, so as to modulate management practices according to farmer’s objectives.

The Relative Effects of Functional Diversity and Structural Complexity on Carbon Dynamics in Late-Successional, Northeastern Mixed Hardwood Forests

Late-successional forests provide a unique opportunity to explore adaptive management approaches that mitigate atmospheric carbon dioxide levels through carbon storage while also enhancing ecological resilience to novel climate and disturbances. Typical benchmarks for adaptive forest management include species diversity and structural complexity, which are widely considered to increase ecosystem stability and productivity. However, the role of functional trait diversity (e.g., variation in leaf and stem traits) in driving forest productivity and ecosystem resilience remains underexplored. We leveraged existing continuous forest inventory (CFI) data and collected local functional trait observations from CFI plots within late-successional forests in western Massachusetts to explore links between aboveground carbon storage and different types of forest diversity. We then fit a linear model within a Bayesian hierarchical framework applying functional diversity, species diversity, and structural complexity as predictors of live aboveground biomass (AGB) within CFI plots. Our framework integrates local functional trait information with database species mean trait values using a multivariate structure to account for inherent trait syndromes and estimate functional diversity in each plot. Across 626 plot-timepoints, we found that integrating individual functional trait information from co-located plots yielded the best predictions of live AGB. Contrary to expectations, functional diversity had a negative relationship with live AGB. Whereas plots with low functional diversity and higher AGB were dominated by mid-to-late successional hardwood species, plots with high functional diversity had more shade-intolerant species and lower AGB mediated by recent small-scale disturbances. Our results reveal an ontogenetic shift in the effects of functional diversity on AGB productivity over the course of succession in northeastern temperate forests. Corroborating with classical models of biomass development in late-successional northern hardwood forests, our findings support the need for adaptive forest carbon management to facilitate a mosaic of different forest successional stages across the landscape to maximize live aboveground carbon benefits in northeastern mixed hardwood forests.

Funcionalidade de colêmbolos em diferentes usos do solo / Functionality of Collembola across different land-uses

A identificação de atributos funcionais de colêmbolos associada com sua caracterização taxonômica responde aos impactos causados por mudanças de uso e manejo, além de terem um efeito sobre os processos funcionais do solo. Além disso, a descrição de atributos funcionais visa também atender o crescente interesse de investigar mecanismos relacionados com os processos de montagem de comunidade, tais como a convergência e divergência de atributos funcionais. Este trabalho teve três objetivos: 1) investigar a composição e estrutura de comunidades de colêmbolos em relação a alterações de uso do solo e diferentes ofertas de forragem através de uma abordagem funcional e taxonômica; 2) avaliar a existência de filtros ambientais e diferenciação de nichos dentro das comunidades; 3) avaliar o efeito de diferentes grupos funcionais dos colêmbolos no funcionamento do solo. Para isto, foram realizamos três estudos, sendo avaliados no primeiro estudo diferentes usos do solo (mata, campo e eucalipto) e no segundo estudo quatro níveis de ofertas de forragem. Como resultado principal de ambos os estudos, observamos que os de índices taxonômicos, tais como riqueza e diversidade de espécies, podem apresentar padrões diferentes dos índices funcionais, porém ambas as abordagens foram sensíveis aos tratamentos avaliados. De modo geral, o aumento da riqueza e diversidade de colêmbolos não é diretamente relacionado com o aumento da diversidade funcional. Também foi observado em ambos os estudos que a composição e estrutura das comunidades de colêmbolos foram afetadas significativamente pela existência de um filtro ambiental e pela diferenciação de nicho ecológico, uma vez que observamos convergência e divergência de atributos funcionais significativamente relacionados com os gradientes estudados. O terceiro estudo, realizado em condições de microcosmos, consistiram em 6 tratamentos e um controle, sendo os tratamento a combinação de diferentes grupos funcionais de colêmbolos. De modo geral, os resultados mostram que a presença de colêmbolos não afetou significativamente o tamanho da comunidade microbiana do solo, porém estimulou a mineralização de C e N. A presença de apenas um grupo funcional de colêmbolos estimulou a atividade microbiana, sendo estes significativamente diferentes do tratamento controle. Estas diferenças são ainda maiores quando há duas e três grupos funcionais no mesmo microcosmo. O estímulo sobre a comunidade microbiana possivelmente deve-se aos diferentes nichos ocupados pelos colêmbolos dentro do solo, pelas modificações na composição microbiana e pela redistribuição de nutrientes no interior do solo. Furthermore, trait-based approach also aims to attend the growing interest in investigating mechanisms that are related to assembly process in communities, such as trait-convergence and trait-divergence assembly patterns. This work was three objective: 1) investigating the composition and structure of Collembola communities regarding environmental changes in soil and litter induced by land-use and grassland management using both taxonomic and functional approaches; 2) assessing the existence of environmental filtering and biotic interaction within collembolan communities; 3) evaluating the effect of three collembolan life-form on soil functioning. To this, we carried out three studies to investigate these objectives which two of them was carried out in three land-uses types (study 1) and four herbage allowance (study 2).The results of the studies 1 and 2 showed that taxonomic indices such as richness and taxonomical diversity and functional indices can have different patterns in collembolan communities, but both approaches are sensitive to the treatments evaluated. In general, increasing the richness and diversity of collembola was not directly related with the increase of the functional diversity. We also observed in both studies the composition and structure of Collembolan communities are significantly affected by the existence of an environmental filtering and biotic interaction, since we observed significantly trait-convergence and trait- divergence related to ecological gradients tested. Our findings show that functional traits provide a better understanding of the response of communities to biotic and abiotic changes. The third study was carried out in microcosm conditions and consisted of 6 different combinations of collembolan life-form. Overall, our results showed that collembolan life-forms did not significantly affect microbial biomass but collembolan life-forms affected microbial activities. The presence of only one life-form stimulated C and N mineralization regarding to their CO2 and enzymatic activities, but these stimulations were higher when there was two or three life-forms in the same microcosm. We suggest that stimulation on the microbial community is due to different niches occupied by each collembolan life-form, the changes on microbial composition and redistribution of nutrients in the soil.

Les communautés végétales des interfaces forêt-prairie et leur environnement face aux cas d'afforestation et de déforestation / Plant communities of forest-grassland interfaces and their environment in a context of afforestation and deforestation

En Europe tempérée, les paysages sont dominés par une mosaïque de forêts, prairies et cultures depuis plusieurs siècles. Cette longue période de temps a permis la spécialisation d'espèces au sein des habitats et de leurs interfaces grâce à de forts contrastes environnementaux. Cependant, de fréquents changements d'occupation du sol ont eu lieu par le passé, lesquels se sont accélérés dans les dernières décennies, remettant en cause la stabilité des communautés végétales et de leur environnement. L'afforestation d'anciennes prairies et l'extension de prairies par déforestation, le plus souvent issues de la progression et de la régression d'anciennes lisières, n'ont que peu été étudiées. Au sein des interfaces foret-prairie, en plus d'un effet lisière induit au sein de chaque habitat par la proximité de l'habitat adjacent, un effet histoire peut s'ajouter au sein des habitats récents, c'est-à-dire un héritage environnemental et/ou floristique (dette d'extinction, crédit de colonisation). Au sein des lisières d'habitats récents, une interaction entre effet lisière et effet histoire peut également être rencontrée. Dans cette thèse, les objectifs ont été d'évaluer l'influence relative de l'effet lisière et de l'effet histoire le long d'interfaces forêt-prairie stables, issues d'afforestation et issues de déforestation en s'intéressant (i) aux conditions environnementales, (ii) à la richesse et à la composition floristique des communautés végétales, et (iii) aux valeurs de traits au sein des communautés. Nos résultats ont montré des gradients croissants d'intensité lumineuse et de nutriments des sols allant des lisières aux cœurs de prairies. En réponse à ces gradients, un fort effet lisière sur la composition des communautés végétales a été trouvé en prairie. Ces différences floristiques entre lisières et cœurs de prairies s'expliquent par la présence d'un grand nombre d'espèces transgressives parmi les espèces spécialistes de forêt, lesquelles ont des valeurs de traits favorisant leur transgression en prairie. A côté de cela, une dette d'extinction d'espèces spécialistes de prairie a été trouvée au sein des forêts récentes, laquelle est responsable d'une hauteur végétative plus importante par rapport aux forêts anciennes. Ces résultats s'expliquent par une intensité lumineuse restée plus élevée au sein des forêts récentes, même après plusieurs décennies. Une dette d'extinction d'espèces spécialistes de forêt a aussi été mise en évidence en lisière de prairie récente, laquelle est le résultat d'une interaction entre effet lisière et effet histoire. En prairie récente, l'effet lisière favorise le maintien des espèces forestières. D'après nos résultats, les lisières de forêt et de prairie, dont la plupart ont subit un déplacement au cours des deux derniers siècles, hébergent de nombreuses espèces végétales spécialistes des habitats anciens, parfois en dette d'extinction. Une réévaluation de la distribution des espèces au sein des communautés végétales de forêts et prairies semble alors nécessaire en tenant en compte de l'histoire des habitats. Face à l'instabilité croissante des forêts et prairies, l'identification des espèces en dette d'extinction représente une chance pour la conservation et la restauration de la biodiversité végétale / In temperate Europe, landscapes are dominated by a mosaic of forests, grasslands and crops since several centuries. This long period of time allowed the specialization of species within the habitats and their interfaces thanks to strong environmental contrasts. However, there have been frequent land-use changes in the past, which have accelerated in recent decades, challenging the stability of plant communities and their environment. The afforestation of former grasslands and the extension of grasslands by deforestation, mostly resulting from the progression and regression of the edges, have been poorly studied. In the forest-grassland interfaces, in addition to an edge effect induced in each habitat by the proximity to the adjacent habitat, a history effect can be added in recent habitats, i.e. an environmental and/or floristic legacy (extinction debt, colonization credit). In the recent habitat edges, an interaction between edge effect and history effect can also be encountered. In this thesis, the objectives were to evaluate the relative abundance of the edge effect and the history effect along forest-grassland interfaces stable, from afforestation process and from deforestation process, by studying (i) environmental conditions, (ii) the richness and floristic composition of plant communities, and (iii) trait values within communities. Our results showed increasing gradients of light intensity and soil nutrients ranging from grassland edges to grassland cores. In response to these gradients, a strong edge effect on the composition of plant communities was found in grasslands. These floristic differences between grassland edges and grassland cores are explained by the presence of a large number of transgressive species among the forest specialist species, which have trait values favoring their transgression in grasslands. Besides this, an extinction debt of grassland specialist species has been found in recent forests, which is responsible for a higher vegetative height compared to ancient forests. These results can be explained by the fact that light intensity remained higher in recent forests, even after several decades. An extinction debt of forest specialist species has also been demonstrated in the recent grassland edges, which is the result of an interaction between edge effect and history effect. In recent grasslands, the edge effect favors the maintenance of forest species. According to our findings, forest and grassland edges, most of which have been displaced over the past two centuries, are home to many plant species that are habitat specialists, sometimes in extinction debt. A re-evaluation of the distribution of species within forest and grassland plant communities then seems necessary, taking into account the history of habitats. In a context of increasing forests and grasslands instability, the identification of species in extinction debt represents an opportunity for the conservation and restoration of plant biodiversity

The presence of only one life-form stimulated C and N mineralization regarding to their CO2 and enzymatic activities, but these stimulations were higher when there was two or three life-forms in the same microcosm. We suggest that stimulation on the microbial community is due to different niches occupied by each collembolan life-form, the changes on microbial composition and redistribution of nutrients in the soil.

L'exsudation racinaire est connue pour avoir une influence sur le fonctionnement des communautés microbiennes, en particulier celles impliquées dans le cycle de l'azote (Haichar et al, 2012). Elle est liée à la physiologie de la plante, cette dernière pouvant être évaluée via les traits fonctionnels végétaux, permettant une classification des plantes en fonction de leur performance dans leur environnement. Ainsi, nous pouvons distinguer d'une part les espèces exploitatrices, avec une efficience de la photosynthèse élevée et une acquisition rapide de l'azote dans les sols, et d'autre part les plantes conservatrices, possédant des caractéristiques contraires (Aerts & Chapin, 1999) et des plantes intermédiaires dont les caractéristiques sont intermediaires.L'objectif de ces travaux de thèse est de déterminer l'influence de la stratégie de gestion des ressources de 6 poacées, réparties le long d'un gradient de stratégie de gestion des ressources, allant de stratégies conservatrices (Sesleria caerulea et Festuca paniculata), intermédiaires (Antoxanthum odoratum, Bromus erectus) à des stratégies exploitatrices (Dactylis glomerata et Trisetum flavescens), sur la diversité et le fonctionnement des communautés totales et dénitrifiantes. I) Dans un premier temps nous avons étudié le lien entre la stratégie de gestion de ressources des plantes et la quantité d'exsudats racinaires dans le sol adhérent aux racines (SAR). Nous avons ensuite déterminé l'influence de la quantité d'exsudats racinaire sur les activités microbiennes potentielles des communautés microbiennes du SAR (respiration et dénitrification potentielles), puis par une approche ADN-SIP (Stable Isotope Probing) couplée à du séquençage haut-débit, l'influence de l'exsudation racinaire sur la structure et la diversité des communautés bactérienne colonisant le SAR et le système racinaire. II) Dans un second temps, nous avons étudié le lien entre la stratégie de gestion des ressources des plantes et la nature des exsudats racinaires libérés au niveau du SAR et présents dans les extraits racinaires en analysant les profils des métabolites primaires chez Festuca paniculata, Bromus erectus et Dactylis glomerata, représentant respectivement des stratégies de gestion des ressources conservative, intermédiaire et exploitatrice / Root exudation is known to influence microbial communities functioning, in particular those involve in nitrogen cycle. Thus, we can distinguish competitive species, with higher photosynthetic capacity and rapid rates of N acquisition, conservative species with the opposite characteristics (Aerts & Chapin, 1999) and intermediate plants, with intermediate characteristics.The objective of this work is to determinate the influence of nutrient management strategiy of 6 poaceae, along a strategies gradient from conservative strategy (Sesleria caerulea and Festuca paniculata), intermediate (Antoxanthum odoratum and Bromus erectus) to competitive strategy (Dactylis glomerata and Trisetum flavescens), on diversity and functioning of total and denitrifying communities.I) Firstly, we studied the link between the plant nutrient management strategy and the root exudates quantity in the root adhering soil (RAS). Then, we determined the influence of the rate of root exudation on potential microbial activities (respiration and denitrification), and with a DNA-SIP (Stable Isotope Probing) approach coupled to high-throughput sequencing, the influence of root exudation on the bacterial structure and diversity of communities colonizing the RAS and the root system. II) Secondly, we studied the link between the plant nutrient management strategy and the nature of molecules exuded in RAS and present in root extracts by analyzing primary metabolites profile to Festuca paniculata, Bromus erectus and Dactylis glomerata, respectively a conservative, an intermediate and a competitive plant. Then, we determined the influence of primary metabolites profile of each plant on semi-real denitrification of communities colonizing RAS of plants. III) Finally, an mRNA-SIP approach is in progress to determine the influence of exuded metabolites on active bacterial communities functioning and the expression of genes involved in denitrification process in RAS and root system. Our results show an influence of the nutrient management strategy on the rate of carbon exudation, the competitive plants exuding more than conservatives ones.

La conservation de la biodiversité dans les aires protégées en zones périurbaines : dynamique des communautés végétales au parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno entre 1977 et 2013

Ce mémoire visait à déterminer si un petit parc périurbain, en l’occurrence le Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno, est parvenu à maintenir l’intégrité de sa flore au cours des trente dernières années en dépit de pressions humaines croissantes et de perturbations naturelles passées, en plus d’identifier les principaux changements floristiques survenus au cours de cette période et les facteurs responsables. Pour répondre à ces objectifs, une étude historique a été réalisée, en comparant un inventaire floristique ancien (1977) à un inventaire récent (2013). Mes résultats montrent d’abord une forte croissance de la diversité alpha indigène au cours des 35 dernières années, accompagnée d’un déclin significatif de la diversité bêta (30%). Malgré cette homogénéisation taxonomique, la diversité fonctionnelle de la flore forestière s’est accrue, la rendant probablement plus résiliente aux événements perturbateurs. D’autre part, mes analyses ont révélé la progression de traits fonctionnels souvent associés à des habitats forestiers intensément broutés, révélant une certaine influence du cerf de Virginie sur la composition et la structure de la flore forestière. Enfin, mes résultats ont montré que les herbiers botaniques se révèlent être une alternative fiable aux méthodes traditionnelles pour documenter et évaluer l’impact des grands herbivores sur la morphologie des plantes broutées. Au final, cette étude a montré que les petites aires protégées périurbaines peuvent jouer un rôle majeur dans la préservation de la diversité floristique d’habitats forestiers d’intérêt, particulièrement lorsque leur statut de protection permet d’encadrer de manière stricte les activités humaines. / This study aimed to determine whether a small suburban park, namely the Mont-Saint-Bruno National Park, managed to maintain the integrity of its flora over the last thirty years despite increasing human pressures and past natural disturbances, in addition to identify the main floristic changes during this period and the drivers of observed changes. To do so, a historical study was conducted by comparing past (1977) and recent (2013) floristic surveys. First, a striking increase in alpha diversity, driven mostly by native species and associated with a significant decline (30%) in the beta diversity over the last 35 years was found. Despite this taxonomic homogenization, the functional diversity of forest flora has increased, probably increasing its resistance to disruptive events. Furthermore, analyses revealed the progression of functional traits associated with overbrowsed forest habitats, revealing some influence of white-tailed deer on the composition and structure of the forest flora. Finally, my study also showed that herbarium specimens can be used as a reliable alternative to traditional methods to document and assess the impact of large herbivores on browsed plants morphology. In conclusion, this study showed that small suburban protected areas can play a major role in the preservation of the floristic diversity of rich forest habitats, particularly when their status strictly frames human activities.

Individual-based modelling of tropical forests : role of biodiversity and responses to drought / Modélisation individu-centrée des écosystèmes forestiers tropicaux : rôle de la biodiversité et réponses à la sécheresse

La faible représentation de la biodiversité dans les modèles de végétation a longtemps été un obstacle à la compréhension et à la projection des processus écosystémiques. La forte biodiversité des forêts tropicales, leur rôle clé dans les cycles biogéochimiques globaux, ainsi que leur vulnérabilité aux perturbations anthropiques directes et indirectes, amplifient les difficultés et enjeux de ces questions de recherche. En particulier, l'augmentation prédite de la fréquence et de l'intensité des sécheresses pourrait impacter la structure et composition floristique de ces forêts, comme dors et déjà observé au cours d'expériences naturelles et artificielles. Cette thèse explore ces questions de recherche à travers deux approches complémentaires, de modélisation et de mesures écophysiologiques. Dans le premier chapitre, je décris un simulateur de croissance forestière individu-centré et spatialement-explicite, TROLL, qui intègre les progrès récents en physiologie des plantes. Les processus sont paramétrés à l'aide de traits fonctionnels espèce-spécifiques, pour une forêt tropicale amazonienne. Une régénération forestière est simulée, et validée par des observations faites en Guyane française. La sensibilité du modèle à plusieurs paramètres globaux clés est évaluée. Enfin, l'influence de la variation de la richesse et composition spécifiques sur les propriétés écosystémiques est explorée. La réponse des forêts tropicales à la sécheresse est mal connue, empêchant la représentation pertinente des processus en jeu dans les modèles de végétation. Les chapitres 2 à 5 de cette thèse ont ainsi pour but de documenter la tolérance à la sécheresse et sa diversité dans une forêt amazonienne. Une méthode récente et rapide de détermination d'un trait de tolérance des feuilles à la sécheresse, le potentiel hydrique des feuilles au point de perte de turgescence (ptlp), est validée et utilisée, permettant de quantifier pour la première fois un tel trait de tolérance à la sécheresse dans une forêt amazonienne à l'échelle de la communauté. Ce jeu de données permet l'exploration des déterminants de la tolérance à la sécheresse des feuilles, à travers les espèces d'arbres, les tailles des individus, les stades de succession, les expositions à la lumière, ainsi que les lianes. La variabilité de ptlp observée suggère une large diversité de réponses à la sécheresse au sein des communautés de plantes amazoniennes. Ceci est confirmé par le suivi direct du flux de sève au cours d'une saison sèche sur divers arbres de canopée. Enfin, je discute les implications de ces résultats pour le développement des futurs modèles de végétation. / A great part of uncertainties in our current understanding and projections of the carbon cycle lies in the vegetation compartment. The problem of biodiversity representation in vegetation models has long been an impediment to a detailed understanding of ecosystem processes. The high biodiversity of tropical forests, their disproportionate role in global biogeochemical cycles, together with their vulnerability to direct and indirect anthropogenic perturbations, amplify the relevance of this research challenge. In particular, the predicted increase in drought intensity and frequency in the tropics may impact forest structure and composition, as already observed in natural and artificial experiments. This thesis explores how new advances in modelling and ecophysiology should help improve our understanding of these processes in the future. In the first chapter, I describe an individual-based and spatially-explicit forest growth simulator, TROLL, that integrates recent advances in plant physiology. Processes are linked to species-specific functional traits parameterized for an Amazonian tropical rainforest. This model is used to simulate a forest regeneration, which is validated against observations in French Guiana. Model sensitivity is assessed for a number of key global parameters. Finally, we test the influence of varying the species richness and composition on ecosystem properties. Tropical forest response to drought is not well understood, and this hampers attempts to model these processes. In chapters 2 to 5 I aimed at documenting drought-tolerance and its diversity in an Amazonian forest. A rapid method of determination of a leaf drought tolerance trait, the leaf water potential at turgor loss point (ptlp), was validated and applied to a range of plant species. We established the first community-wide assessment of drought tolerance in an Amazonian forest. These results inform on the drivers and determinants of leaf drought tolerance, across tree species and lianas, tree size, successional stages, light exposition, and seasons. Variability in ptlp among species indicates the potential for a range of species responses to drought within Amazonian forest communities. This is further confirmed by direct monitoring of whole-plant water use on diverse canopy trees during a marked dry season. Finally, I discuss the implications of these results to increase the dialogue between the vegetation modeling community and ecology, to enhance model's predictive ability, and to inform policy choices.

Les patrons latitudinaux de diversité taxonomique et fonctionnelle diffèrent entre les bryophytes et les plantes vasculaires dans les tourbières

L’objectif de ce mémoire était d’évaluer l’influence de la latitude, de variables abiotiques et du type de tourbières (bog ou fen) sur la diversité des plantes vasculaires et des bryophytes. Des inventaires ont été réalisés dans 380 tourbières du nord-ouest du Québec (49° à 55° N). Les effets de la latitude, de la continentalité, du climat et de variables abiotiques locales sur la diversité α (richesse spécifique et dispersion fonctionnelle), la diversité β (indices LCBD) et la composition ont été évalués pour les deux groupes de plantes. La diversité α des bryophytes augmentait vers le nord, alors que la diversité α des plantes vasculaires présentait des patrons différents dans les bogs et les fens en réponse à la latitude. Il y avait une homogénéisation taxonomique et fonctionnelle vers le nord pour les deux groupes de plantes et dans les deux types de tourbières. Les variables environnementales avaient des effets différents sur les deux groupes de plantes, dépendamment de l’indicateur de biodiversité utilisé. La composition taxonomique et fonctionnelle des bryophytes et des plantes vasculaires étaient principalement structurées par les conditions locales contrastantes entre les bogs et les fens, tandis que les variations bioclimatiques le long du gradient latitudinal jouaient un rôle secondaire. Les futures études et politiques de gestion des milieux naturels devraient tenir compte de plus d’un indicateur de diversité et considérer les différences entre les deux écosystèmes et les deux groupes de taxons afin de planifier les efforts de conservation et afin d’évaluer les effets des changements environnementaux. / This study aimed to evaluate the influence of latitude, abiotic variables on vascular and bryophyte diversity in bogs and fens. Inventories were conducted in 380 peatlands in northeastern Québec (49° to 55° N). Changes in α-diversity (species richness and functional dispersion), β-diversity (LCBD indices) and composition in response to latitude, continentality, climate, and local abiotic variables were evaluated for both plant groups. Bryophyte α-diversity increased northward, while vascular α-diversity showed contrasting patterns in bogs and fens in response to latitude. Environmental variables had different effects on both species’ groups, and patterns varied depending on the diversity indicator used, as α- and β-diversity and functional and taxonomic diversity were often decoupled. There was taxonomic and functional homogenization with latitude for both groups of plants in both habitats. Bryophyte and vascular taxonomic and functional composition were primarily structured by contrasting local conditions in bogs and fens, while bioclimatic variations along the latitudinal gradient played a secondary role. These results highlight the contrasting biodiversity patterns in both peatland types and the importance of local habitat conditions in structuring vascular and bryophyte biodiversity. Therefore, future studies and policies should include more than one diversity indicator and consider the differences between ecosystems and taxon groups when evaluating the effects of environmental changes on biodiversity and planning conservation.
