This thesis offers a reading of GQ South Africa 2000, the first glossy men’s magazine to be launched in South Africa (in 2000). It traces the possible iconographical genealogy of glossy men’s magazines to canonical erotic artworks and examines the aesthetic conventions used by GQ to elevate its contents through an implied association with art. This thesis, furthermore, investigates the commonalities between GQ, a ‘mainstream’ publication, and ‘pornography’ (as defined by the United States Civil Rights Ordinance 1985). In this way, the fluid impermanence of ‘art’, ‘pornography’ and ‘popular culture’ as typologies is highlighted. The new taxonomy of ‘gentlemen’s pornography’ is introduced in order to counter the notion that material that has the gloss of ‘high culture’ and is deemed socially acceptable, cannot be pornographic. This thesis submits that a critical reading of glossy men’s magazines from an interdisciplinary perspective is imperative in order to reveal their ideological assumptions. The ideological position that informs this study is the radical feminist belief that pornography objectifies and subordinates women and is, therefore, harmful. The thesis is simultaneously grounded in the theoretical methodologies of visual culture and art history, and as such assumes the intonation of these disciplines. From a Postmodern point-of-view, popular visual culture not only wields power in terms of generalising (capitalist and sexist) western paradigms, but is also skilful at masking its significant influence in doing so. For this reason, this dissertation endeavours to raise a critical dialogue concerning the ideological ‘message’ of glossy men’s magazines. The sometimes antithetical nature of discourse critically centered on gender representation in visual culture may be attributed to the pervasiveness of familiar (and therefore seemingly harmless) female objectification in the popular media. This thesis examines the iconography of gendered stereotypes against the erotic/pornographic, high culture/low culture object/subject binaries, and, furthermore, situates these types in the wider dialectic of ‘obscene’ (off-scene) versus ‘acceptable’ culture. Dopamine (DA) is a modulatory neurotransmitter required for movement, learning, and reward. Several neuropsychiatric disorders exhibit DAergic dysfunction, including Parkinson’s disease (PD). The presynaptic DA transporter (DAT) constrains DAergic signaling via DA reuptake. Acute PKC activation drives DAT endocytosis, however, endogenous receptor-mediated DAT trafficking in striatal terminals remains ill-defined. Here, I present data supporting biphasic Gq-receptor-mediated DAT trafficking in striatum. Gq-receptor activation drives initial DAT insertion, which requires DA release, DAergic DRD2auto activation, and intact retromer. Subsequent DAT retrieval requires PKC and the neuronal GTPase Rit2. Furthermore, I demonstrate that the endogenous Gq-coupled metabotropic glutamate receptor, mGluR5, expressed on DAergic neurons exerts biphasic DAT regulation. DAergic mGluR5 silencing revealed that mGluR5 is required for motor learning and coordination. DAergic mGluR5 cKO motor deficits were rescued by DAT inhibition, suggesting mGluR5-mediated DAT trafficking is required for these behaviors. Apart from its requisite role in DAT trafficking, Rit2 is a PD associated risk allele. We previously demonstrated that Rit2 is required for psychostimulant response and generalized anxiety, but not basal locomotion. However, Rit2’s roles in more complex motor behaviors and PD pathology remain unknown. DAergic Rit2 silencing revealed that Rit2 is required for male motor learning and prolonged Rit2 suppression leads to progressive manifestation of PD biomarkers, coordination deficits, and decreased DAergic tone. Motor learning deficits were rescued by boosting DA availability, echoing Rit2-mediated hypodopaminergia. Together these results identify receptor-mediated DAT trafficking mechanisms in DA terminals, demonstrate that DAT surface dynamics are required for motor function, and implicate DAergic Rit2 loss in progressive PD-like phenotypes.

The Group Questionnaire (GQ) is a 30-item, self-report measure of the group relationship that was developed in the present study. It is based off of Johnson's new three factor model of the group relationship which includes Positive Bonding, Positive Working, and Negative Relationship. This study involved two parts, the creation of the GQ followed by the validation and refinement of the GQ using 486 participants from three populations - outpatient university counseling center, inpatient state hospital, and non-patient AGPA process groups. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to test the goodness-of-fit of Johnson's model to each of the populations separately and as a whole. Following the refinement process, results showed the GQ to have good fit to the model for each population. Distinct differences in response pattern were found between the three populations. Reliability estimates were predominantly in the good range. Implications for future utility of the GQ include using it as a clinically relevant and efficient assessment tool to inform clinicians of the quality of the group psychotherapy relationship and to potentially predict group outcome.
