Graduate unemployment in South Africa’s banking sector

11 June 2014 (has links)
M. Com. (Development Economics) / In recent years unemployment has received considerable international attention from scholars, policy makers, and labour practitioners, because it has reduced economic welfare, reduced output, and eroded human capital. Researchers argue that South Africa is faced with structural unemployment because of the insufficient demand for low-skilled resources and the sufficient demand for highly skilled resources. However, in terms of highly skilled resources, young South Africans have become better educated over the last decade, resulting in a significant growth in the size of the graduate labour force. This growth emanates particularly from the fact that the majority of the graduate labour force has completed their tertiary education. Despite this growth, graduate unemployment appears to be rising along with the overall unemployment rate. The aim of this study is to sensitise policy authorities to the impact of graduate unemployment on the economy by highlighting the perceived causes of graduate unemployment in South Africa’s banking sector. The research was conducted with the aid of a survey administered to two groups, namely a graduate group and a human resource (HR) manager group. The result derived from the research shows that the quality of tertiary institutions which relates to educational standards and culture, the quality of education, high expectations, a shortage of skills, a lack of work experience, and a lengthy process of application and job search are perceived to be the possible causes of graduate unemployment in South Africa. The study makes several tentative recommendations relating to what can possibly be done to reduce graduate unemployment. Among the recommendations proposed are the improvement of the quality of education and institutions, a well-planned career guidance mechanism, and a graduate recruitment subsidy.

Nogaya, Noloyiso January 2012 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Masters of Technology: Quality,Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2012. / This study examined the quality, employability and the competencies of graduates from the Department of Operations and Quality Management at Durban University of Technology (DUT). The objectives of the study included determining the relevance of the curriculum to the workplace; evaluating the views of graduates regarding employability; and assessing the views of organisations regarding graduate performance in the workplace. The study also proposes that with the knowledge and skills acquired in the field of Operations Management, graduates should be able to reach their full personal and professional potential. However, these graduates still experience difficulties in adjusting and coping with the realities of the labour market. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. The study was exploratory in nature. The study made use of questionnaires to obtain the respondent’s view. The pilot study composed a sample of ten graduates. For the main study, forty of the sixty graduates and employers completed and returned the questionnaires that were administered. The response rate was 67%. The Cronbach’s Alpha Reliability Analysis was used to measure the reliability of the questionnaires. Face validity was verified by the statistician for pre-administering of questionnaires. The results revealed that obtaining a qualification in operations management at DUT increases the employability of graduates. The study also showed that employers are content with the way in which these graduates are able to translate their theoretical knowledge into practice, and to identify and solve problems within organisations. However, the study shows that some employers did not provide adequate support and guidance in relation to their development. / M

From volunteering to executives' positions : how associational activities matter during the recruitment of young graduates

Margaria, Claire 16 October 2017 (has links)
Considering how much advice is given to young graduates regarding how they should leverage their associational activities, our research focuses on how these activities are mobilised during the recruitment procedure. It elaborates on the factors that foster the taking into account of the skills that are developed through these activities. It draws on a quantitative (CAWI) and qualitative survey (75 interviews) targeting both "Bac +5" graduates and recruiters (HR professionals, recruitment agencies and managers). The research investigate the recruiters' perception these activities, including the compensation mechanisms they see between them and the work situation. It emphasizes on the transformations of both companies and the executives' positions, that lead some recruiters to consider these activities as skill-providing. It views the young graduate as a genuine actor of the recruitment procedure: a reflexive strategist who is able to convince the recruiter of his or her skill set.

Pândegos, rábulas, gamelas: os construtores não diplomados entre a engenharia e a arquitetura (1890-1960) / Pândegos,rábulas, gamelas: the non-graduated builders between engineering and architecture (1890-1960)

Pareto Junior, Lindener 25 May 2016 (has links)
This research aims to problematize the formation of the fields of engineering and architecture, in the city of São Paulo, from the perspective and the intense performance of the non - qualified constructors. The main agents of the city\'s civil and domestic construction, from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century, the so-called non-graduates not only continued to act after the regulation of the profession in 1933, but also had important participation in the labor market, professional prestige and In the mechanisms of consecration of two of the most important professions of contemporary society. However, because of their gradual professional exclusion and their historiographical oblivion, they are still interpreted as \"minor\" in the history of architecture and urbanism. Nevertheless, because of the quantity and quality of what they produced, their trajectories bring to light a city produced by hundreds of subjects from multiple nationalities and different constructive practices. Therefore, it is not only a matter of narrating how and why the corporate movement of graduated engineers and architects has gradually excluded professionals without a diploma, but rather of perceiving the historicity of the formation of professional fields from a close relationship between \"graduates\" and graduates , Thus evidencing a circle of distinction that did not depend solely on the logic of the diploma.

A Sociological Review of the Post Graduate Work Permit Program as a Pathway to Permanent Residency for International Students in Canada

Moltaji, Golbon 11 March 2019 (has links)
This project is a multifaceted analysis of the Post Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWPP), a temporary work permit that allows international students to live and work in Canada following graduation. This dissertation explores a) the program’s development throughout the years, b) the lived experiences and the perceptions of the students who used the program for transitioning to permanent residency and, c) an art-based autoethnographic introspection about this transition. The research question focuses on how the PGWPP, which provides the government with economic projections regarding student migration, influences the social and economic integration of international students/graduates. This dissertation consists of three self-containing articles all of which employ mobilities paradigm to examine the following secondary questions and purposes: a)Article 1 is an archaeological review of the development of the program that assesses how well the program meets its objective to settle international graduates as successful future permanent residents, b)Article 2 investigates international graduates’ experiences and perspectives about their transition to permanent residency via the PGWPP, c) Article 3 investigates the impacts of migratory-related difficulties among international students on their trajectory as immigrants. Each article approaches the PGWPP from a different methodological angle to provide a comprehensive analysis of the program that ultimately considers the wellness of international students in their pathways to Canadian residency.

Its objective arises from the need to analyze the influence of the course in the professional lives of its graduates. Two aspects considered important in the context of this work were selected as categories of analysis: the initial teacher education and the professional development of the graduates from the point of view of the authors Tomaz Tadeu da Silva, Carlos Garcia, Antonio Nóvoa and Maurice Tardif. This study also used documentary and bibliographical research as a subsidy for reflection, as well as the application of questionnaires which was the basis for data analysis. Thus, the situation of these Pedagogy Course professionals in the labor market was analyzed in order to identify the principles of their education from an adequate preparation to start teaching immediately, as proposed by the Political Pedagogical Project. Furthermore, an investigation was carried out to determine how the course contributed to the professional performance of the graduates, and whether the relationship between theory and practice was present so that students would feel confident in their teaching activity due to the gap between daily pedagogical actions in the classroom and the University. Therefore, based on the theoretical frameworks and reports from the graduates, a critical and contextualized analysis of this process was conducted. It identified that, during the course of his education, the graduate expressed many doubts and worries, living with the feeling of insufficient training. However, at the end of the course, he attests the compatibility between the proposed education and his professional performance / Esta dissertação de Mestrado investigou a atuação profissional dos egressos do curso de Pedagogia ano 2011 e 2012 da Universidade Estadual do Maranhão-campus Santa Inês/MA, a partir dos seus relatos.
