Portraits of Undocumented Latino College Graduates Through a Lens of Resiliency Theory

Perez, Jasiel 08 1900 (has links)
Using resiliency theory as a lens, this qualitative study explored the educational journey and post-graduation experiences of 5 (2 females and 3 males) undocumented Latino college graduates (ULCGs). All participants completed a college degree from a U.S. four-year institution located in a state with an active in-state resident tuition (ISRT) policy. Pseudonyms were used to protect the identity of study participants since a viable path to permanent U.S. residency for undocumented students and/or graduates is currently unavailable. Participants shared their journeys through two 90-minute interviews conducted via Skype, follow-up questions conducted via e-mail, and journal entries collected via e-mail. Consistent with existing literature, findings revealed that participants experienced numerous cultural, academic, legal, and personal barriers, but were relentless in reaching their goals. Contrary to most existing literature, participants in this study enjoyed significant academic capital, aspirational capital, and followed a different and unique decision-making rationale. Findings are presented in five individual portraits and one collective portrait. Individual portraits illustrate participants' struggles, key turning points, and their life decisions. The collective portrait addresses four themes that emerged from the data, including 1) life barriers, 2) reflections of resiliency, 3) decision time, and 4) college education interpretation.

Evaluace prezenční formy bakalářského studijního oboru adiktologie z pohledu absolventů studia / Evaluation of full-time form of bachelor's study field of Addictology from the perspective of graduates

Kačírková, Romana Eleanor January 2015 (has links)
In the academic year 2005/2006 the multidisciplinary bachelor's study field of Addictology began to be taught in the full-time form at the First Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague for the first time. During its nearly ten years of existence it was taken and successfully completed already by several dosens of students, however, a complex feedback on the study design and work, have not yet been realized. The main idea of the presented thesis was to evaluate the full-time form of bachelor's study field of Addictology from the perspective of graduates, and develop recommendations to improve this study field. The main objective was achieved through the evaluation research consisting of the following three research lines: needs analysis, evaluation of satisfaction and process evaluation. Content analysis was used for this purpose and its research sample consisted of official documents concerning the conception of the bachelor's study field of Addictology, namely accreditation files of the bachelor's study field of Addictology from the years 2004, 2007 and 2011, as well as curricula and last syllabi. All documents have been selected by total sampling method. Additional research methods then included questionnaire together with semi-structured interview. The research sample in this case was...

An investigation of students' and graduates' perspectives on experiential learning in undergraduate environmental programs

Roca, Lorna 28 July 2016 (has links)
The central argument underlying this research is that experiential learning (EL) can strengthen environmental university programs. Its goal is to demonstrate the benefits of EL from students' and graduates' perspectives and to provide recommendations for its effective implementation into a program. The research utilized a qualitative case study (Environmental Sciences/Studies (ESS) programs at the University of Manitoba, Canada) through focus groups and individual interviews with students and graduates. The results indicate that EL helps develop an understanding of environmental complexities; motivates students to engage at all levels of their ability; is decisive in skill development; engages students in environmental issues with diverse stakeholders; is important in obtaining employment; and it is imperative to connect EL activities to concepts taught in class. The data however, did not show EL to be a significant factor in fostering pro-environmental behaviours in post-secondary environmental students. Overall, the research shows that provided effective implementation, EL can play a significant role in enhancing ESS curriculum and that ESS students place a great value on EL in their education. / October 2016

Vysokoškolsky vzdělaní Romové - faktory ovlivňující jejich úspěšnost / Roma college Graduates : Success factors

Zoubek, Šimon January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with factors which influenced successful Roma college graduates. It tries to reveal what are the reasons why these Roma people managed to defy statistics and get a college diploma. The thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part it acquaints readers with professional literature and with its resources. Particular chapters pursue factors which have a direct connection with Roma education - Roma family, which strongly determines children's value system, Roma traditions and customs, Roma language, basic legislation and famous Roma personalities. The practical part, using a questionnaire, tries to determine the most important factors which influenced Roma college graduates during their lives. The goal of the research is to find out whether and to what extent particular factors interfered with academically successful Roma people's decision making. From the research part, it is apparent that the two main factors were positive motivation from their parents and a vision of a higher salary.

Přibová, Marie January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis "The Pilsen Conservatory with a Focus on the Violin Department" first deals with historical contexts that are connected with important violin personalities of the Pilsen Conservatory. The first part presents historical events which are linked to significant violinists of the Conservatory in Pilsen. Its aim is to present complex overview of the teachers who worked at the Conservatory from its beginning and who contributed to the high level of the Violin department with their experienced work. The thesis also focuses on the important graduates who represented or still represent the school with their pedagogical and artistic success at diverse musical events either in the Czech Republic or abroad. The second part brings interesting interviews with the teachers and the graduates of the school. Among them the most interesting are the parts where the teachers explain the methodology, which they use in their lessons. From the point of view of the oral history the teachers' memories of their beginning with the violin, difficulties during the study or their life are also very interesting.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Maristela de carvalho Gamba.pdf: 1898698 bytes, checksum: a5a47fe14f05ce4ebbb39206109acce0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-06-16 / This research has had its concern from my professional experience as a technical school professor and as a Final Paper advisor for Computing, Internet Computing and Digital Games Coding courses in a technical school in Santos that has the Final Paper as its graduating proposal as seen in the Political Pedagogical Project. The research meant to discover if the institution¿s graduates perceived the Final Paper as an activity that contributed to their professional development. In order to do so, the research¿s main question was elaborated: How do graduates perceive the contributions the Final Paper had in their professional practice? The theoretical grounding of this project is based on the works of Demo, Schön, Freire, and others who pointed out the importance of the graduating subject to build its own knowledge, valuing the experience as a learning source and developing its ability to think critically and assign meaning to what is being taught. The research, with a quantitative approach, was achieved by the focus group method with graduates from Computing and Internet Computing classes from a technical school from Santos. The focus group was meant to investigate group members¿ perceptions of the researched theme and the building of the scientific paper. The results obtained from the focus group show that the graduates perceive the Final Paper as an important practice for the development of their autonomy since they have had the opportunity to experience research techniques which are fundamental for project development. Besides, they pointed out the group project as one of their main difficulties claiming that not everyone has the same commitment to the project and its deadlines. They claimed that, to overcome this difficulty, they had to learn how to first of all organize the group and mainly how to properly communicate. To these graduates the Final Paper development was a rough path, even though it brought satisfaction seen that they had to overcome several difficulties on the way. However, they also said that seeing the final project was a reason to be proud. The results of the research showed that even though the Final Paper is a practice with difficulties in the beginning since the biggest part of the work come from individual efforts, after the first rough steps most of the graduates get involved with the project and start to understand the value of searching for knowledge and turning it into concrete actions that can solve problems they might face along the way.

Practice Predictors of Graduates of a College of Medicine with a Rural Primary Care Mission

Click, Ivy A., Blackwelder, Reid B., Good, Donald W. 09 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the practicing characteristics of graduates of a college of medicine with a rural primary care mission, including influences on graduates' specialty choices and practice locations. Secondary data analyses were conducted on student records and AMA Physician Masterfile data. Fewer graduates were practicing primary care than had entered primary care training. Graduates who attended internal medicine residency training were less likely to be practicing primary care medicine than those who attended other primary care programs. Women and rural track graduates were significantly more likely to practice primary care than were men and generalist track graduates, respectively. Primary care physicians (PCPs) were practicing in more rural locales than non-PCPs. Family physicians tended to practice in the most rural locales. FMDRL_ID: 4822

An examination of near-graduates' computer self-efficacy in light of business employers' expectations

Gibbs, S. F. January 2009 (has links)
The use of computers has become part of every day life. The high prevalence of computer use may lead employers to assume university graduates will have good computing skills. Such assumptions may be the reason that employers use broad terms to advertise the computing tasks required for graduate-level positions. This thesis investigates how well the expectations of employers match the perceptions of near-graduates about their computer skills. Four graduate-level positions were identified from advertisements placed in order to recruit graduates. The employers who placed these advertisements were surveyed by interview and questionnaire. Twenty-one students about to graduate from a university commerce programme were also interviewed and surveyed. It was found that the wording of the advertisements did not satisfactorily portray the requirements and intentions of the employers. It was also found that skills the near-graduates perceived they possessed frequently did not meet the expectations of employers. Results also show that the near-graduates did not fully understand which computing skills would be expected in the workplace. This study highlights implications for three groups: employers, graduates and educators.
