Uncertainty in Simulated Fluxes and Physical Conditions of Two North European Wetlands.Mancera Gonzalez, Rafael January 2010 (has links)
There is an extended concern for how to quantify the fluxes of greenhouse gasses (GHG) and how they are related to climate change and land use. Efforts have already been done, mostly regarding carbon (C) compounds, but there is still much to be done especially to understand regulating factors and interactions with the Nitrogen cycle. NitroEurope is a large project for the integrated European research into the N cycle. This study shares its aim, to improve the understanding the physics involved in the fluxes of the reactive N (Nr). More specifically, the patterns of some physical and biological processes related to Nr have been studied for two wetlands, one in the proximity of Edinburgh and the other in the North of Finland. A common model setup has been used for both of them, since they are both peat soils. The differences applied to achieve appropriate performances give insights of their nature. The presence of snow is a major factor that governs the behavior of the site in Finland. The scaling of existing models for the estimation of heat transfer in the soil of the Scottish site is also critical, such as its groundwater level. The sites represent different climatic conditions, but for CO2 fluxes they showed similar behavior and response to governing meteorological conditions. Using the GLUE method in combination with a process oriented ecosystem model, some further insights have been gained for the regulation and control of greenhouse gas emissions from the two sites.

Investigation of Probable Pollution from Automobile Exhaust Gases in Kampala City, Uganda : To Assess the current automobile exhaust gas emission levels and characterize the emissions from different automobile typesBateebe, Irene January 2011 (has links)
It is estimated that transport sources in developing countries contribute about 4% of the global fossil carbon dioxide versus 18% by industrialized countries. The cost of urban air pollution is estimated to be 2% of GDP in developed countries and more than 5% in developing countries. With an annual vehicle registration growth of over 30% in 2008 and a population growth rate of 6%, the number of automobiles in Kampala city of Uganda is expected to continue growing exponentially. Most of the vehicles used are imported into the country when quite old with worn out engines and low energy efficiencies. As a result, such vehicles profusely emit exhaust gases which may be harmful to both human health and the environment. Controlling pollution from the transport sector is vital to improving the quality of air and protecting public health. The objective of this dissertation was to determine the level of pollution from automobile exhaust gases in Kampala City and its impacts on human health and the environment. The study involved the analysis of tail pipe emissions using a gas analyser. It covered mini buses, motorcycles and personal vehicles which constitute 92% of the Kampala vehicle parc. It was established that the main types of exhaust gases from the automobiles were CO2, NOx, CO, NO and HC. The findings estimated the highest level of NOx tail pipe emissions at 0.15 mg/m3, HC emissions at 2.59 mg/m3, CO at 110 mg/m3 and 286.6 mg/m3 for CO2. The reported ambient air emissions were estimated at 0.18 ppm, 14000 ppm and 1.3 ppm corresponding to NO2, CO2 and CO, respectively. The study further investigated the impact of four mitigation methods on emission levels using the LEAP model. The impact of increasing penetration of city buses, introduction of tail pipe emission standards and hybrid cars and improvement of vehicle fuel economy were investigated. It was found that if left unabated, the emissions will continue to grow with the increasing number of motor vehicles. Implementation of the proposed mitigation methods resulted in a reduction in the GWP reduced by 52%, 51%, 17% and 8.5%, respectively. It is recommended that a comprehensive motor vehicle pollution control program be designed to implement the proposed NEMA vehicle emission standards. Establishment of an integrated transport system promoting the growth in number of city buses should be made a priority to reduce on emission levels and enable the decongestion of Kampala city.

Robust evidence for reversal of the trend in aerosol effective climate forcingQuaas, Johannes, Jia, Hailing, Smith, Chris, Albright, Anna Lea, Aas, Wenche, Bellouin, Nicolas, Boucher, Olivier, Doutriaux-Boucher, Marie, Forster, Piers M., Grosvenor, Daniel, Jenkins, Stuart, Klimont, Zbigniew, Loeb, Norman G., Ma, Xiaoyan, Naik, Vaishali, Paulot, Fabien, Stier, Philip, Wild, Martin, Myhre, Gunnar, Schulz, Michael 08 November 2022 (has links)
Anthropogenic aerosols exert a cooling influence that offsets part of the greenhouse gas warming.
Due to their short tropospheric lifetime of only several days, the aerosol forcing responds quickly to emissions.
Here, we present and discuss the evolution of the aerosol forcing since 2000. There are multiple lines of evidence
that allow us to robustly conclude that the anthropogenic aerosol effective radiative forcing (ERF) – both aerosol–
radiation interactions (ERFari) and aerosol–cloud interactions (ERFaci) – has become less negative globally, i.e.
the trend in aerosol effective radiative forcing changed sign from negative to positive. Bottom-up inventories
show that anthropogenic primary aerosol and aerosol precursor emissions declined in most regions of the world;
observations related to aerosol burden show declining trends, in particular of the fine-mode particles that make
up most of the anthropogenic aerosols; satellite retrievals of cloud droplet numbers show trends in regions with
aerosol declines that are consistent with these in sign, as do observations of top-of-atmosphere radiation. Climate
model results, including a revised set that is constrained by observations of the ocean heat content evolution show
a consistent sign and magnitude for a positive forcing relative to the year 2000 due to reduced aerosol effects.
This reduction leads to an acceleration of the forcing of climate change, i.e. an increase in forcing by 0.1 to
0.3 W m−2
, up to 12 % of the total climate forcing in 2019 compared to 1750 according to the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Development and optimization of selective leaching processes for the extraction of calcium from steel slag in view of sequestering carbon dioxideKotoane, Alice Mpho 05 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences), Vaal University of Technology / Several technologies are currently being developed to mitigate the greenhouse gas CO2. One of these promising processes is industrial mineral carbonation whereby alkaline industrial wastes are taken as raw material. The process is a multi-step process which involves the extraction of calcium from industrial alkaline wastes and the subsequent reaction of extracted calcium rich supernatant with CO2 at elevated pH to form stable carbonates. Steelmaking slags were selected from four different plants in SA and used for this investigation owing this to their high calcium content. The potentially-suitable four slags were selected on the basis of their Ca content and high chemical reactivity.
The objective of this investigation was to develop a common leach process for all four steel slags to achieve a complete Ca extraction from slags. A Ca rich solution was carbonated to achieve a stable carbonate that can be used.
Experiments were carried out using ammonium reagents and a hydroxide reagent to investigate their suitability for the rapid, selective extraction of calcium. Calcium was leached under different experimental conditions including varying leachant concentrations, temperatures and solid to liquid ratios. The slags exhibited contrasting reactive properties to different leachants, which can essentially be explained in terms of differences in mineralogical composition, hence mineral solubility characteristics. Leaching with 2M NH4NO3 aqueous solution at room temperature extraction efficiency increased with increasing concentration. The extent of extraction was different for the four slags. WMO5 showed a complete dissolution of Ca within 20 min of experiment. This difference is due to their different Ca-containing minerals. Same is observed with aqueous NH4CL but WMO5 did not reach a complete dissolution as with NH4NO3. Aqueous NaOH made it impossible for Ca extraction due to its high pH and upon slag addition it was more elevated. Increasing solid to liquid ratio had an influence in percentage slag loss. The pH of leach solution was elevated to 9 making it difficult to extract Ca. Under controlled conditions (pH kept under 1) optimal slag dissolution was achieved with traces of larnite and large amount of brownmillerite. The generated Ca-rich leachate was carbonated in a 600 ml reactor vessel with liquid CO2. A stable carbonate aggregate was produced. / Council for Geoscience

Variação na composição isotópica do metano (CH4) em sedimentos de igarapés na Amazônia Oriental / The variation of isotopic composition of methane (CH4) in stream sediments of Eastern AmazonMoura, José Mauro Sousa de 04 November 2005 (has links)
The study of isotopic composition of methane (δ13CH4) provides valuable information for understanding the process of production, emission, and cycling of this gas in ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed the concentration and isotopic composition of methane trapped in gas bubbles formed in the sediment of streams. We also analyzed the isotopic composition of organic matter (OM) from the surrounding vegetation, from bottom sediments (cores), and stream shorelines. The studied sites were two varzea" floodplain streams (Açu and Maica) and one terra-firme" stream (Jamaraqua), located near Santarem-PA and Belterra-PA, in Eastern Amazon. Methane concentration in the Jamaraqua stream (44.9±2.0%) was significantly lower than the concentration found in the Maica (59.8%±13.2%) and Açu (76.5±16.6%) streams. Carbon and nitrogen contents and C:N ratio from the material deposited in the shorelines were higher in terra-firme" stream (C= 16.0%, N= 1.1% and C:N= 14.7) than in varzea" stream (C= 1.8%, N= 0.2%, and C:N= 10.4). Mean δ13C value of OM was lower in terra-firme" stream (-29.6) than in varzea" (-26.5). Similarly, the sediment cores at the terra-firme" site had more OM than the varzea" site. Mean values for δ13C, C content, N content, and CN ratio for terra-firme" stream were: -29, 10.9%, 0.6% and 16.4, while in the varzea" stream the mean values for those parameters were: -23, 1.0%, 0.1% and 9.0. The δ13CH4 varied seasonally and spatially among the ecosystems and this variation is probably associated with: 1) changes in the inputs of OM (C3 and C4 plants); 2) changes in fractionation processes during its decomposition; 3) methane oxidation mechanisms, and 4) environmental factors at each site. The varzea" streams, where the CH4 tends to be more enriched in 13C during the dry season, showed higher values of δ13CH4 than terrafirme" stream, with mean values varying from -58 to -55 at Açu stream and from - 59 to 52 at Maica stream. The Jamaraqua stream showed the largest seasonal variation in δ13CH4 ranging from -62 to -74 and tending to be depleted in 13C during the dry season.

Alarming predictions on the global climate future has been making the climate policies discussions come along more vigorously the latest years. On this context, developed countries especially are trying to get themselves together looking for effective mechanisms to curb the consequences of human actions upon the weather. But these measures must impact, by international trade, on countries that have not agreed to share the burdens of emissions control. Particularly, Brazil has a relevant role on climate policies discussions, due to aspects like its energetic matrix with emphasis on renewable energy, its tradable production of biofuels and its rich carbon stocks in natural vegetation. So this work intends to investigate the direct and indirect impacts on Brazilian economy from possible implementation of climate policies. The methodology is based on applied general equilibrium modeling, considering the specificities of the Brazilian economy. The results point that under the perspective of biofuel commercial production, Brazil becomes the main producer, diminishing its production of ethanol for its own use, and moving toward international trade of the non-pollutant oil substitute. One can either conclude that the biofuel commercial production is a trap for economy of a country, especially Brazil, since it takes advantage of available natural resources in despite of internal consumption and even harming the investment on other economic activities. For the other countries of the world, however, the possible trading of biofuels is beneficent by unburdening the climate policies.

Methane emission of Amazonian hydroelectric reservoirs from Powerlaw relations.Lima, Ivan Bergier Tavares de 20 August 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this work is evaluating methane emissions from two Amazonian reservoirs, Tucuruí and Samuel. The analysis considers fluctuations of the reservoir area-height and isotopic measurements and fluxes of d13CH4 acquired in the field, which are influenced by many factors simultaneously, such as winds, atmospheric pressure, oxidation in the water column, and others. Isotopic composition of methane in bubbles indicates that CO2 reduction is a major pathway for methane production in the sediments. The results also show that fluxes are higher in shallow reservoirs than in deeper ones. Using concepts and techniques of fractal theory, fundamentally based on power law functions, and considering a time horizon of 100 years, a model between water level, flux and reservoir area of Tucuruí allowed to estimate methane emission from Tucuruí at about 2,5 ± 2,7 x 10^6 tons of CH4. When water levels drop local methane emissions are enhanced, although, total reservoir emission decreases, due to the shrinking of the reservoir area. Over an optimistic scenario, the emissions of Tucuruí reservoir in CO2 equivalents would be around 0,13 ± 0,14 x 10^6 tons C/year.

Aspectos produtivos e emissão de metano em ovinos Santa Inês suplementados com a leguminosa Macrotyloma axillare / Productive aspects and methane emission in Santa Inês sheep supplemented with the legume Macrotyloma axillareLima, Paulo de Mello Tavares 20 October 2016 (has links)
Using legumes in ruminant production system may provide benefits such as improvement in animal performance; decrease in methane (CH4) emissions, mainly due to the presence of tannins; and increase in nitrogen soil availability, due to the fixation of this element carried out by these plants. Macrotiloma (Macrotyloma axillare - NO 279) is a tropical legume which is characterized for presenting low concentrations of tannins, providing reduced risks of antinutritional effects, but still has few studies regarding its effects on ruminants. The studies described here aimed to determine the effects of macrotiloma tannins on the in vitro ruminal fermentation, and to evaluate apparent digestibility, productive performance, CH4 emission, ruminal fermentative parameters, carcass characteristics and fatty acids profile of the meat in sheep fed this legume. At the first study, an in vitro bioassay was performed to evaluate gas production and ruminal fermentation, while an in vivo trial was carried out to determine apparent digestibility of nutrients using 12 ewes, divided into 2 treatments: exclusive tropical grass hay diet (control - CON); and tropical grass hay diet supplemented with macrotiloma hay (macrotiloma - MAC) (grass:legume, 75-25). In the in vitro assay, reduced total gases (TGP) and CH4 production were observed in the samples incubated without polyethylene glycol (PEG), that is, those which were subject to effects of tannins (p < 0.05) and in the digestibility trial, increased crude protein (CP) digestibility and ruminal ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), as well as reduced protozoa count were observed for the ewes fed MAC (p < 0.05). In the second study, a 90 days growth performance assay was performed, with 14 Santa Inês lambs divided into 2 treatment groups, CON and MAC, as previously described. In addition to growth performance, CH4 emission by using the sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique, ruminal fermentative parameters, carcass characteristics and fatty acids profile of meat were evaluated. No difference (p > 0.05) was observed between the lambs of the groups CON and MAC for dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), CH4 emission, short chain fatty acids production, carcass characteristics as well as for fatty acids profile of meat. Evaluating ruminal fermentative parameters, increased concentration of NH3-N in the rumen fluid and reduction of both, protozoa count and relative abundance of methanogens were observed for the animals fed MAC (p < 0.05) when compared to those fed CON. Even though macrotiloma has not influenced productive performance and CH4 emission, the decrease observed for in vitro CH4 production and in vivo protozoa count, as well as the increased NH3-N production and the reduction in methanogens have denoted potential to macrotiloma as a ruminant feed and as an option for being evaluated in further studies regarding CH4 mitigation in the production system

Phytomonitoring and modelling of photosynthesis in jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril L.) with artificial neural.Barriga Puente de la Vega, Madeleine Lita 30 July 2003 (has links)
The increases in greenhouse gas concentrations, mainly carbon dioxide, and the climatic changes have become important scientific, economic, and political subjects in the past years. The Kyoto Protocol establishes the Clean Development Mechanism, which grants carbon credits for projects that promote the sequestration of carbon in developing countries. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the CO2 absorption capacity by terrestrial plants, and this requires the development of gas flow and gas exchange models in different scales. That development is usually complicated, because the ecophysiological processes are non-linear. This work presents a method to model photosynthesis at the leaf level, as a first step toward quantifying the potential of carbon sequestration. The technique used was artificial neural networks (ANNs), as it allows the adjustment of non-linear relationships between input and output variables. The work was divided in two parts: phytomonitoring and modeling. The phytomonitoring was accomplished in jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) during one year. The following physiologic variables were measured: photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, leaf temperature, and fluorescence; and environmental variables: CO2 concentration, photosynthetic activity radiation, relative humidity, and air temperature. An unprecedented amount of data for that type of experiment and for that plant species was obtained. The analysis of these data showed important characteristics about the relationship of the physiologic variables in Hymenaea courbaril and the environmental variables, in the four seasons. The data collected were used for the modeling and fine-tuning of the neural network. The network was trained with different combinations of input variables to observe to which group of variables the neural network responded better. The analysis of the training results showed that with the ANN technique it is possible to achieve a very good approximation of the photosynthesis function, with 92% success rate for entries consisting of filtered data.

January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The eucalyptus crop provides inputs for the timber, steel and pulp and paper industries, and has an enormous potential to store atmospheric carbon in the aerial biomass and soil, helping to mitigate the greenhouse effect. However few works have studied how soil CO2 emissions vary in space in areas of eucalyptus plantations. The objective of this work was to characterize spatiotemporal variability patterns of soil CO2 emission in eucalyptus plantation forest in cerrado in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, using geostatistical techniques. The experiment was conducted in the Fazenda de Ensino e Pesquisa, da Faculdade de Engenharia de Ilha Solteira (UNESP), located in the Selvíria city -MS. The soil CO2 emission was measured by the LI-COR system (LI-8100), the soil temperature was recorded using a stem thermometer and the soil moisture was determined using a TDR equipment. The experiment was conducted in a 100 100 m grid containing 102 sample points. The results indicate a significant difference (p<0.05) between the mean of FCO2 of the month of October (4.21 mol m-2 s-1) and November (6.16 mol m-2 s-1), due to the greater soil moisture condition provided by the more frequent precipitations during the month of november. Approximately 73% of the temporal variability of FCO2 was explained by the model: FCO2= 13.23 ˗ 0.48Ts ˗ 0.039 Us2 + 0.037 Ts×Us (F=5.40; p=0.039). The fitted models to the variograms for FCO2 were predominant spherical and Gaussian. Range values ranged from 18.... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre
