Examining the Relationship Between Parental Sex Education, Religiosity And Sex Positivity In First- And Second-Generation African ImmigrantsPhyllis Antwiwaa Agyapong (9735716) 16 December 2020 (has links)
<p>This quantitative study examined the relationship between parental comprehensive sexual and reproductive health communication (SRH), religiosity and sex positivity in first- and second-generation African immigrants. Comprehensive SRH communication was measured by frequency through the Sexual Communication Scale (SCS), religiosity was measured through the Faith Activities in the Home Scale (FAITHS) and sex positivity was measured through the Sex Positivity Scale (SPS). It was hypothesized that there would be a negative relationship between religiosity and sex positivity and a positive relationship between religiosity and sex positivity in first-and second-generation African immigrants. Results indicated that higher levels of religiosity in the participant’s upbringing was significantly associated with higher sex positivity. Additional findings revealed higher instances of SRH communication correlated with higher sex positivity in men and lower sex positivity in women. This study aimed to set a foundation for future studies on first- and second-generation African immigrants as it relates to sexual health.<br></p><p></p>

Female sexuality in French naturalism and realism, and British new woman fiction, 1850-1900Rosso, Ana January 2012 (has links)
The Victorian need to compartmentalise and define women’s sexuality in terms of opposing binaries was paralleled by the vague idea that the period’s French and British literatures were at odds with one another. Elucidating the deep connections between, and common concerns shared by, French Naturalist and Realist and British New Woman authors, this thesis shatters the dichotomies that attempted to structure and define women’s sexuality in the mid- to late- nineteenth century. The thesis focusses on novels and short stories by French authors Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant, and New Woman authors Sarah Grand, Ménie Muriel Dowie and Vernon Lee. In a time during which the feminist movement was gaining momentum, and female sexuality was placed at the heart of a range of discourses, and scrutinised from a number of different angles – not only in literature, but in medicine, psychology, sexology, criminology – the consideration of the female sexual self and her subjectivity brings together the work of authors whose oeuvres have been largely considered as antithetical. Previous work has indeed shown the centrality of female sexuality to both literatures, yet never compared them. This thesis rediscovers the significance of both literatures’ investment in a discourse revolving around female sexuality by contrasting the French male authors with the British female writers, and uncovering unexpected parallels in their claims about the contemporary situation of women. Simone de Beauvoir’s Le Deuxième Sexe’s feminist philosophy frames the thesis’s comparative analysis, questioning and re-examining these authors’ representations of female sexuality. The ideas of sensuality and rationality, motherhood, reproduction, marriage, and prostitution thus become recurring concerns throughout it. The thesis’s first chapter considers the female as sexual subject and/or object of the male gaze, in a range of New Woman and French literature. The second and third chapters are organised around the themes of marriage and prostitution, and the final chapter considers issues of female sexuality within the fantastic short story.

Previous issue date: 2009-07-07 / This study investigates the self representations of transvestites in orkut and constitutive
elements of their (cyber)identities, having the visuality as the focus and determinant axis. For
this, the emphasis is given to pictures and self portraits, present in albums of their profiles on
the site. We are interested in understanding what is the image they construct of themselves
from physical reconstructions, aesthetic formulations, costumes, scenery, performances and a
whole network of symbolic meaning which is important for them. Orkut, like many other
social environments of the internet, comprehends speeches and narratives of individuals and
social groups that describe, identify and represent themselves of the most varied ways and
with the most diverse goals and interests. In order to understand how the self representations
of transvestites are built on orkut, it was investigated initially some communities with trans
thematic, then it was selected the profiles of two transvestites, with whom interviews were
also conducted. Although this study focuses on the self representations in the orkut, other
environments in cyberspace have been researched, as blogs and sites for transvestites. We
conclude that there are multiple ways to represent transvestitely, not just the stereotypical,
stigmatized and marginalized representations widespread by the media / Esse estudo investiga as autorrepresentações de travestis no orkut e os elementos constitutivos
de suas (ciber)identidades, tendo como foco e eixo determinante a sua visualidade. Para isso,
a ênfase é dada aos retratos e autorretratos, presentes nos álbuns de seus perfis no site.
Interessa-nos entender qual é a imagem que constroem de si a partir de reconstruções
corporais, de formulações estéticas, vestimentas, cenários, performances e de toda uma rede
de significação simbólica que para elas importa. O orkut, assim como tantos outros ambientes
de sociabilidade na internet, comporta discursos e narrativas de indivíduos e grupos sociais
que se descrevem, se identificam e se autorrepresentam das mais variadas maneiras e com os
mais diversos objetivos e interesses. Para compreender como se constituem as
autorrepresentações de travestis no orkut, investigou-se inicialmente algumas comunidades
com temática trans, selecionando-se em seguida os perfis de duas travestis, com as quais
foram realizadas também entrevistas. Embora esse estudo focalize as autorrepresentações
presentes no orkut, outros ambientes no ciberespaço foram pesquisados, como blogs e sites de
travestis, para estabelecer um diálogo mais abrangente. Assim, o que se pode perceber é que
há uma pluralidade de existências e representações possíveis das travestilidades,
diferentemente do que as representações estereotípicas, estigmatizantes e marginalizantes,
provenientes de distintas instituições sociais, sobretudo das mídias, podem fazer crer

Previous issue date: 2017-09-14 / The primary goal of this research is to examine social practices related to sexuality and gender
among college students from two higher education institutions (one public and one private)
located in Anápolis, Brazil. The theoretical framework adopted in this thesis delimits the
philosophical, historical and conceptual aspects regarding body, sexuality and gender based
on Nunes (2005), Le Breton (2007), Louro (2013) Scott (1995), Siqueira (2010), Foucault
(1979, 2014, 2015), Melani (2012), Corbin, Courtine and Vigarello (2008), Siqueira (2008),
Puleo (2004), Nye (1995), Beauvoir (1970), Connel and Pearse (2015), Matos (2010), among
others. These authors discuss how categories such as body, gender and sexuality are filled
with representations, based on concepts that have been established throughout the history of
human development as well as on theoretical concepts describing them. In what concerns
philosophical and historical aspects, the present analysis is consistent with the interpretations
and social practices that have been established by numerous individuals, in different contexts
and historical periods, regarding the aforementioned categories, in such a way that the
multiple manifestations, observations, analyses, experiences and studies that influence
contemporary perceptions contribute to social and political actions, such as the feminist
movement (first, second, third and fourth wave), which also includes gays and lesbian groups.
This thesis also takes into account previous work by Moscovici (1978, 2015), Vala and Castro
(2013), Dias (2014), Goffman (1988), Parker (1999), Freud (1910, 1925) and Reich (1978) to
discuss how social representations are shaped by communication processes, gestures, among
other factors, which cut across social relations and feed discourses, conceptions and social
practices, both individual and collective, with respect to objects, things and individuals. In
this scenario, sexuality, gender and homosexuals are critical elements, as they determine
perceptions and behaviors able to stimulate or mitigate the effects of prejudice and
discrimination. As for the quanti-qualitative field research conducted in this study, a
questionnaire composed of 47 open and closed-ended questions was applied to 227
individuals, adults and young adults with ages ranging from 19 to 40 years old. The
questionnaire was designed to verify how participants experienced their own sexuality and
corporeity. This survey has also shown how these people perceive gender issues
(homosexuality, in particular) within the social representations that have been structured over
the course of their development and that stem from interactions between individuals inside or
outside university circles. Moreover, the questionnaire responses, detailed in the data analysis
section in this thesis, reveal senses and meanings that have been built up over their
educational processes and interpersonal relationships. / A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo principal verificar as práticas sociais relacionadas a
sexualidade e a gênero entre jovens universitários de duas Instituições de Ensino Superior,
uma pública e outra privada, em Anápolis – GO. Na fundamentação teórica, busca-se delinear
os aspectos conceituais, históricos e filosóficos que permeiam a sexualidade, o corpo e o
gênero por meio das concepções de Nunes (2005), Le Breton (2007), Louro (2013) Scott
(1995), Siqueira (2010), Foucault (1979, 2014, 2015), Melani (2012), Corbin, Courtine e
Vigarello (2008), Siqueira (2008), Puleo (2004), Nye (1995), Beauvoir (1970), Connel e
Pearse (2015), Matos (2010), entre outros. Os referidos autores discutem como as categorias
corpo, sexualidade e gênero estão repletas de representações, por meio dos conceitos que
foram sendo estruturados ao longo do desenvolvimento humano e das diversas concepções
teóricas que os descrevem. No que diz respeito aos aspectos filosóficos e históricos, a análise
converge com as leituras e com as práticas sociais que foram sendo instituídas por diferentes
sujeitos, em diferentes contextos e épocas, sobre essas três categorias, de modo que as
múltiplas manifestações, observações, análises, experiências e estudos que incidem nas
percepções contemporâneas concorrem para ações com conotações sociais e políticas, como
as que acontecem até os dias atuais com o movimento feminista (primeira, segunda, terceira e
quarta onda), que abarca outros segmentos, como os grupos gays e lésbicos. Como elemento
complementar desta dissertação, discute-se, por meio das análises de Moscovici (1978, 2015),
Vala e Castro (2013), Dias (2014), Goffman (1988), Parker (1999), Freud (1910, 1925) e
Reich (1978), como as representações sociais são forjadas por meio dos processos
comunicativos, dos gestos, entre outros, que circulam e entrecruzam as relações sociais e vão
alimentando os discursos, as concepções e as práticas sociais individuais e coletivas em
relação aos objetos, às coisas e aos sujeitos. Nesse caso, destacam-se a sexualidade, o gênero
e os homossexuais, que acabam por determinar percepções e comportamentos que podem
estimular ou minimizar o preconceito e a discriminação. Na pesquisa de campo de cunho
quantiqualitativo, verificou-se, por meio da aplicação de um questionário com 47 perguntas
fechadas e abertas, como 227 indivíduos — jovens adultos e adultos que, em sua maioria,
estão na faixa etária de 19 anos a 40 anos — vivenciam e experienciam sua sexualidade e
corporeidade. O questionário também verificou como esses indivíduos percebem a questão de
gênero (em particular, a homossexualidade) dentro das representações sociais que foram
sendo estruturadas no decorrer do seu desenvolvimento e a partir do convívio dentro e fora da
universidade/faculdade, e verificou quais sentidos e significados eles foram construindo ao
longo do seu processo educativo e nas suas relações com o outro, o que se revela nas
respostas descritas na análise de dados.

The role of Inuit language and culture in Nunavut schooling : discourses of the Inuit qaujimajatuqangit conversationAylward, Marie Lynn January 2006 (has links)
The settlement of the Nunavut land claim in 1993 followed closely by the enactment of the Nunavut territorial legislation in 1999 were significant historical events for all aboriginal peoples in Canada. The newly formed public government made a commitment to have Inuit traditional knowledge, language, and culture as the foundation of "all we do". This commitment provides the starting point for the present study, which explores how the role of Inuit language and culture is constructed within the curricula and practices of Nunavut schooling. Data were generated from dialogue with Nunavut teachers and with authors of the Inuuqatigiit curriculum. In order to interpret the interview texts, a discourse analysis was undertaken using James Gee's ideas of situated meanings, cultural models, and discourses at work within them in relation to the Nunavut schooling context. This analysis was informed by a critical review of government and academic texts related to northern education policy.

While members of any group of men may appear to be ordinary gendered examples of humanity, behind their physical similarities lie many socio-political and familial differences; thus it is only by knowing such men as individuals that their identities are revealed. Such is the aim of this thesis: to discover the 'real man' behind the statistics about sex-roles and the predominance of male characters in children's and adolescents' literature. From within a selection of Spanish texts a variety of male characters are analysed, focusing on six major roles: father, grandfather, imaginary friend, detective, outlaw or similar marginalised man, and foreign other, with particular attention paid to the Gypsy. All the chapters are linked by the Bakhtinian theory that dialogue with the other leads to the development of a character's or potential reader's sense of identity. The first chapter, concerning fatherhood, is related to a person's sense of intrinsic identity, given with their name and genetic heritage. The grandfather represents a similar sense of family continuity, as well as enabling the young reader to understand Spain's recent historical and rural past. An imaginary friend may symbolise an aspect of identity concerned with a child's ability to achieve a goal or to occupy a special place within the family. Detective stories are analogous to the young person's developing identity as a reader able to decipher the mysteries of texts, whilst marginalised men typify children themselves: persons who have neither status nor money, but who are able to indulge in carnivalistic behaviour which adults call 'play.' The development of one's sense of national identity is fomented through interaction with texts about foreigners who have contributed to Spain's growth as a nation from pre-historic times to the present. A brief critical evaluation of the role of women in detective fiction and as marginalised figures is offered by way of contrast in the appropriate chapters.
