[en] REPRESENTATION AND POLITICAL RIGHTS OF WOMEN: BETWEEN PRESENCE AND IDEAS / [pt] REPRESENTATIVIDADE E DIREITOS POLÍTICOS DAS MULHERES: ENTRE PRESENÇA E IDEIAS

NATHALIA ASSMANN GONCALVES 19 September 2023 (has links)
[en] This research examines the representativeness of the women s bench in the Federal Chamber through deductive methodology, considering two main dimensions: presence and ideas. The overarching aim of this investigation is to scrutinize the potential interactions between these two dimensions within the scope of the Brazilian Federal legislature. Departing from a feminist approach, the research outlines the concept of representativeness, highlighting the international discourse surrounding the construction of institutional inclusion measures in the political landscape that gained momentum from the 1990s onwards. Furthermore, it underscores the political struggles orchestrated by women in their pursuit and expansion of political rights in Brazil, spanning from the suffrage movement to the implementation of gender electoral quotas and the consolidation of the women s bench. The research underscores the significance of bolstering and broadening women s political rights, emphasizing that the quest for gender equity in political spaces is inherently tied to efforts to transform power structures that perpetuate injustice and inequality.

Omhändertagandet av manliga och kvinnliga patienter inom akutsjukvård : en litteraturöversikt / The care of male and female patients in emergency healthcare : a litterature review

Fröding, Arvid, Sofroniou, Johannes January 2024 (has links)
Emergency care is care available around the clock for patients who require immediate or urgent supervision or interventions. In Swedish emergency healthcare, RETTS (Rapid Emergency Triage and Treatment System) is used in several facilities to prioritize patients. Prioritization of patients is often performed by a nurse. The Swedish Health and Medical Services Act states that healthcare in Sweden should be on equal terms; the patient with the greatest need should receive care first. The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) indicates differences in waiting times between men and women in emergency departments, where women wait longer than men. The aim was to highlight differences in the care of male and female patients in emergency healthcare. The literature review was conducted with a systematic approach. 15 articles were extracted and constitute the results, all of which are quantitative studies. The articles were quality assessed according to a modified review tool from Sophiahemmet University. The results were synthesized into categories and subcategories. Ethical considerations for the articles included in the results were described in the articles. The results show differences in how men and women seek care. Men and women arrive at healthcare facilities in different ways, with men more likely to arrive by ambulance. Women more often describe other symptoms than men. More often women receive a lower priority than men, despite describing the same type of symptoms. Men more often receive more highly specialized care than women. The conclusion is that deficiencies in the care of women result in them waiting longer than men and not being taken seriously for their symptoms, leading to a different type of treatment.

What Influences Qualified Women Administrators in Virginia to remain in Division Level Positions while others Pursue the Position of Superintendent? – A Qualitative Study

Catlett, Marceline Rollins 01 September 2017 (has links)
In education, women administrators are underrepresented in leadership positions, especially as superintendent. The study examined the following: characteristics and experiences of women superintendents to those of women administrators who aspire to be superintendent and to those women who have decided not to pursue the superintendency; the factors influencing women administrators' decisions to pursue or not pursue the position of superintendent; and the impact of identified factors on the decisions made by study participants. This qualitative multiple-subject study with an interview protocol was designed to consider the historical perspective of women in education, characteristics of women administrators, and a feminist poststructuralist framework; it included the identification of internal and external barriers and criteria for enhancing the advancement of women administrators. The study addressed the following research questions: 1. How do the experiences and characteristics of acting women superintendents compare to those of women aspiring to the superintendency and to those of women administrators who choose not to seek the position of superintendent? 2. What factors influence women administrators' decisions to pursue or not pursue the position of superintendent? The seven findings suggested that 1) educational leaders influenced decisions to become administrators; 2) style of leadership, method of conflict resolution, and decision-making practice is collaborative; 3) interpersonal skills, good communication, and approachability are (p.204-205) skills required for the superintendency; 4) the decision to pursue the superintendency is influenced by a number of factors, including role models, mentors, and the intensity of the position; 5) balancing a career with family responsibilities is potential barriers for women seeking the superintendency; 6) negative perceptions of female leaders were potential barriers for women administrators seeking and obtaining the position of superintendent; 7) individual school boards and communities influence how women and men are viewed as leaders and whether or not women superintendents are perceived differently. This study has identified implications for future studies and for advancing the careers of women administrators by eliminating barriers, challenges and negative perceptions regarding their pursuit of the position of superintendent. / EDD

Linking the advancement of women to senior management positions and gender barriers / Gender equity and its impact on Eskom

Govender, Vanisha January 2005 (has links)
Look at the challenge of gender equity and global trends and its impact on Eskom / Women form 52 percent of the adult population in South Africa, the majority of the population, but their status in the workplace is marginalized. The Commission of Employment Equity 2003 report revealed that women represent only 37% of the total workforce and 21% of all senior management positions and only 14% of top management positions. The study firstly investigates if gender barriers are creating obstacles for the advancement of women to senior management positions. The evidence of the research indicates that barriers do exist and the most prominent of these barriers included organizational culture, men not supporting women in the organization, division of labour, lack of after care facilities and women not supporting each other. Organizations need to admit that barriers do exist before any meaningful change can be made to the working environment of women. Secondly the study investigates the impact of gender equity targets as some organizations are attempting to increase the number of women in their business. Although gender targets results in an increase of women in the workplace it has negatively impacted the morale of men. Lastly the effectiveness of some of the strategies like mentorship, training and development, networking, flexible work policies are examined. These strategies will only be effective if the organizations are committed in ensuring a balanced workforce. Organizations needs to realize that diversity should be seen as a great opportunity to be encouraged and nurtured. / Graduate School of Business Leadership / MBL

The Impact of Effectiveness Leadership on African-American Males and Achievement in a Charter School

Henderson, Jacquita 22 May 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that impact achievement for African-American males in a charter school in hopes of providing insight as well as recommendations into effective ways to close the academic achievement gap between African-American males and their counterparts, specifically the so-called “achievement gap” through examination of leadership and other correlates of a successful school. Lastly, the habits of an effective leader and his impact on the belief system, values and behaviors in an African-American male charter school and the influence he has on teachers, parents and students was examined. Thirty participants responded to an online survey sent to teachers, parents and students. Two school principals, one past and the other current were interviewed. Data was collected through a single bounded longitudinal study for a period of six years. A holistic analysis of the entire case was conducted. Through this data collection, a detailed description of the case emerged in which detailed such aspects as the history of the case, the chronology of events, or the day-by-day rendering of the activities of the case. After this description, common or emerging themes were identified in an effort to identify lessons learned from the case. Qualitative analysis of the data provided evidence to support the three themes that emerged from the data collection. This research revealed the most important factor in African-American males and achievement is effective leadership, without that nothing else matters, with that everything is possible. Qualitative analysis of the data revealed the leader must see himself as the instructional leader in his school, have a shared belief system that all children can and will learn, and facilitate a culture that empowers students and teachers alike. Results of this research investigation provide implications and recommendations for all schools educating African-American males in single-gender environments, particularly for the administrators who lead these schools.

The Quest for Maternal Survival in Rwanda : Paradoxes in Policy and Practice from the Perspective of Near-Miss Women, Recent Fathers and Healthcare Providers

Påfs, Jessica January 2016 (has links)
Rwanda has made significant progress in decreasing the number of maternal deaths and increasing the number of antenatal care visits and childbirths at health facilities. This thesis seeks to illuminate potential barriers for Rwanda’s goal for maternal survival. The studies explore the bottom-up perspective of policies and practices in regards to maternal care in Kigali. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between 2013 and 2016 with women who nearly died (‘near-miss’) during pregnancy, their partners, and with other recent fathers and community members, as well as healthcare providers who work within abortion care. The framework of naturalistic inquiry guided the study design and data collection. Analysis was conducted using framework analysis, thematic analysis and naturalistic inquiry. The findings identify paradoxical outcomes in the implementation of maternal care policies. Despite recent amendments of the abortion law, safe abortion was identified as being non-accessible. Abortion-related symptoms continue to carry a criminalized and stigmatized label, which encourages risk-taking and clandestine solutions to unwanted pregnancies, and causes care-seeking delays for women with obstetric complications in early pregnancy. Healthcare providers had limited awareness of the current abortion law, and described tensions in exercising their profession due to fear of litigation. The first antenatal care visit appeared to require the accompaniment of a male partner, which underpinned women’s reliance on men in their care-seeking. Men expressed interest in taking part in maternal care, but faced resistance for further engagement from healthcare providers. Giving birth at a health facility was identified as mandatory, yet care was experienced as suboptimal. Disrespect during counseling and care was identified, leading to repeated care-seeking and may underpin the uptake of traditional medicine. An enhanced implementation of the current abortion law is recommended. Reconsideration of policy is recommended to ensure equitable and complete access to antenatal care: women should be able to seek care accompanied by their person of choice. These findings further recommend action for improved policy to better address men’s preferred inclusion in maternal health matters. The findings of this thesis promote continued attention to implementing changes to strengthen quality, and trust, in public maternal care.

Genderism in the LGBTQQIA2P Communities: Understanding and Addressing Biases

Byrd, Rebekah J., Farmer, L. 16 September 2016 (has links)
Genderism may be understood as “an ideology that reinforces the negative evaluation of gender nonconformity or incongruence between sex and gender” (Hill & Willoughby, 2005, p. 534). Further, genderism may be similar to the concept of heterosexism. While western culture has operated within traditional binary thought systems and the LGBTQQIA subculture has been subject to these same ideas, affectional orientation and gender identity have also been significantly expanded through greater recognition of nonheterosexuality. Emerging research validates the complexity of affectional orientation and gender identity through the recognition of intersectionality as a more accurate framework. The presenters will discuss findings of their qualitative research study that examined how genderism is experienced within, among, and between members of the LGBTQQIA communities. For the purposes of the study, genderism was defined as bias resulting from a binary view of gender. Responses from ten individuals were analyzed for themes within and across participants using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings have implications for counseling practice, counselor education, and considerations for advocacy.

Advocacy for Gender Minority Students: Recommendations for Professional School Counsellors

Simons, Jack D., Beck, Matthew J., Asplund, Nancy R., Chan, Christian D., Byrd, Rebekah J. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Research shows that teachers’ and educators’ responses to gender diversity issues in schools either improves or limits the experiences of students. The school counsellor has an important role to play in this process by working closely with other stakeholders to advocate for transgender, intersex and genderqueer (TIG) students. Following a review of recent developments in the USA, recommendations are made and resources identified to assist school counsellors in validating TIG students, and improving school systems in pursuit of their academic, social and emotional success
