Grandparents raising their grandchildren: impact of the transition from a traditional grandparent role to a grandparent-as-parent role

Backhouse, Jan Unknown Date (has links)
In many Western societies grandparents take on the role of occasional or short-term care providers of their grandchildren. However, recent years have witnessed a significant increase, both in Australia and overseas, in the number of children being raised by their grandparents due to the inability of the children’s parents to effectively meet their parenting responsibilities. This study is an interpretive inquiry that seeks to understand the meanings grandparents attach to their experiences of the grandparent-as-parent role, rather than the traditional grandparent role. The study also investigates how assuming the non-traditional grandparent role has influenced the identity of grandparent caregivers. A narrative inquiry approach was employed to ‘hear the voices’ of 34 grandparents who were raising their grandchildren in NSW, Australia. In-depth interviews were conducted with each of the participants and their narratives were subsequently analysed through the lens of identity theory.Findings from the study reveal that grandparents experience a significant degree of roleidentity conflict in their grandparent-as-parent role. The loss of their traditional grandparent role, together with the shift in commitment to the grandparent-as-parent role, has resulted in a ‘space of difference’ between the ‘ideal’ and the ‘real’ of being a grandparent. This ‘space of difference’ is made up of a series of binary experiences described as myth/reality, visible/invisible, deserving/undeserving, voice/silenced, included/excluded, which appear to have consequentially impacted grandparents’ selfesteem and self-verification processes. The study posits that grandparents lack adequate support, or doulia, resulting in a prevailing belief that their commitment to the grandparentas- parent role is not publicly acknowledged nor afforded the justice it deserves. The study concludes that both policy and practice in NSW have failed to recognise and address the complexity of experience, or the ‘space of difference’ occupied by grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, and provides a number of recommendations in response to the grandparent experiences narrated through this research.

A função do avô na família monoparental feminina

Maria Mirtes Magalhães Viturino 02 February 2017 (has links)
The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren hás been being longer, due to the increase of people's life expectancy, and this relationship is supposed to be beneficiai for both generations. The Effects of Attendance at a Senior Center on the Quality of Life and Well Being of Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren.

Rhynes, LaTrica Q. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of attendance at a senior center on the well being and quality of life of grandparents that were rearing grandchildren. Using convenience sampling, grandparents (N=130) who were rearing grandchildren were given a self administered demographic data survey along with an attendance at a senior center questionnaire, the Quality of Life Scale, the Well Being Scale by Liang, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Caregiver Burden Scale, and the Role Satisfaction Scale. An initial MANOVA (F 7, 69 = 2.72, p < .01) suggesting that senior center attendance affect the measures as a set was conducted and then a series of one way ANOVAs were carried out to test the hypothesis that attending a senior center has an effect on the dependent variables: well being, quality of life, role satisfaction, caregiver burden, loneliness, current health, and heath one year ago. Subsequently, a hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to find out whether frequency and quality of attendance of a senior center predicted quality of life, caregiver burden, well being, loneliness, and role satisfaction, controlling for the demographic data. The results of the MANOVA showed that the dependent variables: quality of life, caregiver burden, well being and role satisfaction were impacted positively by the attendance of a senior center. The results of the regression analyses showed that for each of the major dependent variables, after controlling for the demographic data, the quality and frequency of involvement at the senior center did not have a uniquely significant role in predicting the dependent variables. The results of this study shows that further research need to be conducted to answer other questions regarding grandparents who are rearing minor grandchildren and the affects that senior centers may have in assisting in the management of this new task that grandparents have found themselves dealing with.

Often, due to several factors that will be presented throughout this dissertation, the number of children who return to their paternal home has also increased, bringing their own children, a phenomenon known as recohabitation. With the growth of these multigenerational households, many seniors are the heads of the family and support their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. This type of family arrangement can both be a source of support and mutual help, as well as of conflicts and tensions. In this context, the present study had as general objective to understand how the elderly, who are grandmothers and reside in multigenerational households, from the recohabitation by the children, experience and perceive this situation. This is a qualitative research involving nine elderly women living in the city of Vitória de Santo Antão/PE. These participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The interview was recorded, transcribed and later analyzed according to the thematic content analysis technique. The results showed that: 1) the main reason that mobilized the recohabitation was the separation/divorce of the children; 2) the majority of the elderly women had a feeling of satisfaction and conformity with the recohabitation, due to the idea that the mother should always welcome her children and grandchildren at home; 3) the return of the children and grandchildren to the maternal home caused changes both in the physical structure of the house and in the daily life of the elderly, with the addition of domestic tasks and commitments in the care of the grandchildren; 4) most of the participants considered themselves the person who establishes the norms of home functioning; 5) co-residence is not a guarantee of a friendly relationship between the generations; 6) the greatest difficulties cited were the differences regarding the education of the grandchildren, the increase of domestic responsibilities and the rebellion of the grandchildren; 7) the elderly indicated the company of their children and grandchildren as the main benefit of recohabitation; 8) expectations for themselves involve being healthy and willing to work, while for the children they have expressed a desire to remarry and for the grandchildren to continue their studies; 9) the recohabitation reflected the preference of some elderly women, due to the satisfaction of being closer to their children and grandchildren, in other cases it was perceived that it was a lack of choice, due to the feeling of "maternal obligation" to receive their children. Thus, the results highlight the need to cultivate affection bonds that support conflict resolution in this type of family arrangement, as well as strengthen intergenerational relationships.

[en] Delicacies, affections, childhoods: grandparents, grandchildren and their stories had as general objective to analyze meanings built about childhood from narratives of grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren who have strong bonds with each other. The research deals with childhood in this intergenerational relationship, understanding it not only as a stage of life, but also as a human dimension, which can meet us at any age. It investigated if and how the relationship between grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren is potent to revive childhoods in adults and children. Walter Benjamin and Martin Buber were the main theoretical interlocutors, as well as scholars of their works and authors from different areas. With contributions from anthropology, especially from Tim Ingold, its methodology consisted mainly in sharing presence, caring, letting oneself be affected and learning. Seven grandmothers and three grandfathers participated in the research, between fiftyone and seventy-one years of age, residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and one from Niterói. And six of his grandchildren, aged between five and twelve, live in the following cities: Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Brasília and Montevideo/Uruguay. The criterion for choosing was familiarity, based on indications from grandmothers and grandfathers with strong bonds built with their grandchildren up to twelve years old. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the context of this study and the theme of the participants narratives, the fieldwork was carried out between May and December 2020, through interactions on digital means - Zoom platform and WhatsApp application. With the grandmothers and grandfathers, individual meetings were planned. With the grandchildren, conversation was collective. Prožívání proměny role pečovatele v pěstounské péči / Experiencing the Transformation of the Caregivers' Role in Foster Care

KÁROVÁ, Ilona January 2018 (has links)
The subject of the presented thesis focuses on foster care exercised by children´s relatives. The target is to ascertain possible different roles in kinship foster care and different attitudes to the aforementioned, record the experience of kinship care givers, their viewing and experiencing of childcare. I wanted to know if fostering had brought any positives into their lives and on the other hand if there are any negatives related to such care. The theoretic part of my thesis describes the history of foster care in different periods, explains the terms like family, social role and attachment. Furthermore, particular forms of foster care are explained and foster care exercised by children´s relatives is described in more details. Attention is also paid to the relationship and contact between a child and his/her parents. The Authority for social and legal protection of children (OSPOD in Czech) has an essential role in foster care together with assisting organizations, which are described in the last chapter of the theoretic part. I used qualitative methodology for research purposes and semi-structured interviews for collection of data. The research file contained eight respondents which were selected based on simple purpuseful sampling. The research file consisted of foster parents caring for children of their relatives. I determined reasons why the children had been placed into foster care, how the foster parents experience such care and how they view it themselves. The results of the interview analysis helped me to uncover and understand the basis of kinship foster care. According to similar signs, they were divided into several areas. The first area focused on the reasons why the child had been placed into kinship foster care. The main reasons included various types of addictions, child neglect, failure to provide suitable housing or lack of interest in the child. The second area related to the feelings of foster mothers when accepting the child. Their decision-making process is described here, including their motivation and fears related to fostering. In most cases, foster mothers had enough time for making their decisions on fostering. Half of the foster mothers found it natural; the other half had ambivalent feelings for it. The third area is dedicated to changes in wider personal relationships and relationships in the family, in particular, to the impact of foster care on relations between partners and the potential influence on the relationship of foster parents with their own children. Relations with biologic children of the foster parents had an important role as well. The fourth area includes basic characteristics of childcare. Most foster mothers noticed significant changes in their lives. Foster care had a negative impact on the quality of their lives but it principally became a source of vitality and optimism for them. Foster mothers faced problem situations related to intergenerational differences, behaviour of children and problems at school. They also worried often about the future of their foster children. Some foster mothers accepted the role of a mother that predominated over their other life roles. Others had no problems in separating their roles and shifting from one role to another. Most conflicts in the role appeared when the child was fostered by his/her grandmother. The last area contains conditions that have helped foster mothers to reduce the burden of foster care. Foster mothers appreciated help of their families, which they preferred, and sufficient financial security. They gladly accepted the help of assisting organizations and the services offered by them. Mandatory education and the possibility to share their experience with other foster parents were of great importance too.

Tatiana Lima Brasil 10 April 2015 (has links)
The grandparents who take the creation of grandchildren are an increasingly common phenomenon in today's families. The data obtained in this study show the following: 1) the main reasons why the grandparents to take with grandchildren were related to teenage pregnancy, parents' divorce, substance abuse and violence; 2) the role of mother of these grandchildren overlaps the grandmother and the data show that still prevails in society the idea that a woman is who should preferably take the rearing of children; 3) despite reporting fatigue, illness and financial difficulties, grandmothers nourish, mostly, feelings and want to, love and special dedication by grandchildren who create the point of not accepting that they leave them; 4) the main difficulties cited were financial, with education and establishment of limits, and the fear that the grandchildren engage in risky behaviors; 5) expectations for themselves is to have peace and rest while for the grandchildren is to study, work and be good people. As for reports directed to the community in which they live was evident that, despite the violent and think a difficult place to raise grandchildren, with several limitations of infrastructure and housing, they like the place.
