Entre as mais de duzentas epístolas que compõem os livros I a IX da correspondência desse autor, há um grande número de textos cujo objetivo principal é retratar, elogiosamente, homens e mulheres de sua época. Nesses casos, o autor emprega recursos próprios do epidítico oratório para formular as imagens desses contemporâneos. Destacam-se, nesse contexto, as missivas em que o louvor é destinado a coetâneos de Plínio ainda vivos, uma vez que esse tipo de atitude não era, de acordo com Cícero (De or. II, 341342), apreciada em contexto romano. Analisando o gênero epistolar a partir de uma perspectiva literária, procuramos demonstrar como e com quais funções Plínio utiliza o discurso de tipo epidítico no texto de treze cartas em que há louvores a homens vivos e ainda atuantes na sociedade da época. Para tal investigação, nos apropriamos de referenciais da Análise do Discurso apresentados por Maingueneau; do conceito de representação definido por Roger Chartier; além das próprias concepções antigas sobre epistolografia e gênero epidítico. Com isso, verificamos que os louvores efetuados nas cartas laudatórias de Plínio apresentam imagens de indivíduos exemplares tanto em razão de suas virtudes morais quanto pelo envolvimento com a cultura letrada de sua época, seja pela atuação na prática filosófica, oratória ou poética. Essas imagens textuais são marcadas especialmente pelo otimismo de Plínio em relação à contemporaneidade, que leva a considerar seu papel como apoiador do governo de Trajano.

The Tyrrhenian way of war : war, social power, and the state in Central Italy (c.900-343 BC)

This thesis examines warfare, social power, and the state in central Italy for the period between 900 and 343 BC.1 The goal of this research is to better understand how warfare fit into the dialogue of social power in Etruria and Rome. This is achieved through the fulfilment of a number of aims. The first is to understand the patterns of warfare present in central Italy, as these can help us better understand the social aspects of conflict in the region. The project assumes that the practice of warfare is important for understanding its role in this dialogue, and thus an analysis of arms, armour, and tactics is also necessary. The second aim is to understand how warfare and politics affected one another. The condottieri paradigm is challenged and the strength of central Italian states asserted. The third aim is to explain the interaction between warfare and economic power, and the interaction between these two aspects of social power. The fourth aim is similar, and analyzes the connections that are visible between warfare and religion. Through these aims, this project creates a clearer picture of warfare in Etruria and Rome from the Iron Age to the Archaic Period. It argues that the exchange and dialogue of social power was not alienated from the state, and that independent warfare would have been of less value than it was probably worth. To this end, the Servian Constitution is re-examined and the idea of an early Roman hoplite phalanx, and single class army, is rejected. The original contribution of this work is in reasserting the position of the state in Tyrrhenian warfare and rejecting the idea that private interest was more powerful.

Rome and the Sasanian Empire in the fifth century A.D. : a necessary peace

Since Ardashir’s victory over the Parthians in A.D 224 to his successors’ eventual defeat at the hands of the Arabs in 651 the Roman and Sasanian Empires had been bitter and deadly rivals. Throughout Late Antiquity the Roman-Sasanian relationship was dominated by competition; a constant battle for imperial prestige, military supremacy, cultural influence and economic advantage. In the course of their relationship Ctesiphon, the Sasanian capital, was sacked by Roman forces, the Roman emperor Valerian was captured and taken prisoner, Julian the Apostate was killed by Sassanian forces in his infamous campaign of 363, and the great Roman city of Antioch had been captured and razed. Yet in this seemingly never-ending imperial struggle the fifth century stands out as a period of unprecedented peace between the imperial rivals. It is the aim of this thesis to analyse what made the fifth century a unique period of peace. This thesis seeks to expand on current scholarship on the fifth-century Roman-Sasanian relationship, which has focused on the investigation of specific and individual events, by taking a more holistic approach. In this regard, all aspects of the relationship, military conflicts, frontier zones, barbarian threats, religious issues, economic considerations and the development of diplomatic contacts, will be analysed in order to identify what pushed the two empires towards a peace and, more importantly, how this peace was maintained in the face of old hostilities and traditional antagonism. Viewing the Roman-Sasanian relationship as merely one part of the wider late antique world, not as something unique and separate, will also be a key component of this investigation. Central to the aim and approach of this thesis is the use of political realism, a theory for understanding international relations, to reveal the motivations and pressures that both empires faced in this period that pushed them towards peace. In this regard, it will be argued that the Roman and Sasanian overriding desire and goal of ensuring their own safety and security in an anarchic world in the face of the new and dangerous threats posed by the ascendant Huns, Hephthalites and Vandals was the underlying motivation behind the fifth-century peace. It was the threat posed by these groups that forced a shift in Roman-Sasanian relations towards the accommodation that both needed to survive the turbulent fifth century. As such, it was these new threats that stimulated the development of imperial diplomacy in the fifth century that allowed the two empires to mediate their traditional casus belli and maintain peace throughout this period. This diplomatic development allowed them to reach new and innovative diplomatic solutions to their problems in the frontier zones of Arabia and Armenia.

The Greco-Roman Water Catchment Theater: Identification and Distribution

Water has always been a necessity for human beings. How individuals and populations have reacted to, adapted, and manipulated water is apparent in the archaeological record. Ancient urban water systems often utilized a number of components, including aqueducts, siphons, underground tunneling, and cisterns. This thesis proposes that Greco-Roman theaters were utilized as components of ancient urban water systems in specific environments, and that this theater type may be identified in the archaeological and literary record as a water catchment theater. The goal of my thesis was to define, describe, identify, and plot the distribution of water catchment theaters in order to compare their distribution with the environments where they were found. Previous research on Greco-Roman theaters has not focused on theaters as components of ancient urban water systems. Because of this deficiency, it was necessary to define what water catchment theaters were, describe the architectural traits that were found in water catchment theaters, and finally, using this information, identify water catchment theaters and look at their distribution throughout the Greco-Roman world. To meet my objective I created a new typology of water theaters based on extensive research and on-site visits to 30 theaters in five countries, surveyed and classified the 927 theaters found in Frank Sear's Roman Theatres: An Architectural Study, and plotted the distribution of water catchment theaters in relation to space, time, and climate. My study gives new insight into the uses of Greco-Roman theaters but also introduces new methods to examine these ancient buildings with relation to their potential roles in urban water systems.

The Hellenic Axel: The Greek Hellenization of Central Asia and its Impact of the Development of Buddhism

The study of the Hellenistic period has produced a historical construction of the various relationships that formed between the Greco-Macedonian settlers and the natives they came into contact with. Hellenic kings established kingdoms as far as modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, bringing them into contact with the Persian and Indian natives. The study herein is focused on the relationship that formed between the Greco-Macedonian descendants and the Buddhist group that emerged out of India. Numismatic evidence shows that Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kings held political control over regions bordering the Hindu Kush; furthermore, the Indo-Greek coins indicate a relationship between their kings and the Buddhists. Artistic representations found in various cities, such as Ai-Khanoum, illuminate on the cultural blending that occurred as Greek themes began to be represented through local techniques and material. Ancient literature and archeological remains provide further proof of interaction and help to give an identity to key Greek and Indian monarchs. With regard to Buddhism, these monarchs played an important role in the growth of the religion as, alongside artistic expression, the religion had prospered since its beginnings through the aid of royal patronage. In the Greek kingdoms the Buddhists found new mediums of artistic expression and kings that supported their monastic and lay lives; in turn the Greeks saw a pacifist religious group that attracted merchants and wealth. The relationship was mutually beneficial and numismatic evidence from the Indo-Greeks shows that their kings showed favoritism towards the Buddhists. The conclusion herein is that the Greeks provided the structural foundations for the growth of Buddhism who in turn attracted wealth and provided a medium for cooperation between the Greek monarchs and parts of the native population.

A Reinterpretation of the Chanak Crisis through the Lens of the Eastern Question

This thesis traces the roots of the Chanak Crisis, which brought Britain and Turkey on the brink of war in September 1922. After the analysis of the British Near Eastern policy throughout the 19th century up until the Chanak Crisis, the author concludes that the confrontation at Chanak was basically a continuation of the Eastern Question, which had revolved around the Anglo-Russian rivalry over the control of the Turkish Straits. While Britain pursued the closure of the Straits until the World War I to prevent Russia accessing to the Mediterranean, the British post-war strategy focused on ensuring the “freedom of the Straits.” The Turkish advance toward Chanak after the victory over Greeks, however, posed a great threat to British plans. In the face of hints of the cooperation between the Turkish Nationalists and Russia, the British government, therefore, took a decision to hold Chanak at the risk of military confrontation.

Transparens i svensk valkampanjfinansiering

Despite the fact that the issue has been discussed for several decades, there are still no rules in Sweden mandating political parties and candidates to disclose received donations. Because of this lack of transparency, Sweden is not fulfilling some of its international obligations and has fallen behind in the international trend to increase the transparency of election campaign finance. The lack of disclosure rules in Sweden has led to extensive criticism, most notably from the Council of Europe´s group of states against corruption, Greco, who criticized Sweden in light of the guidelines on the subject from the Council of Europe. At this writing, a new proposal for disclosure rules is being prepared at the Department of Justice, DoJ. The proposal is to be presented in spring 2013. For the time being, the only thing that exists regarding transparency of election finance in Sweden is an agreement from 2000, struck between some of the parties in parliament, to voluntarily disclose some of their received donations. In 2004 a government report proposed implementing disclosure rules. The proposal received extensive criticism from the reviewing bodies regarding its compliance with the rights protection in the Swedish Instrument of Government, RF. RF provides absolute protection against the government forcing individuals to disclose their opinions in political matters and absolute protection against the government keeping records of individuals' political opinions. Since these rights are absolute, they can be restricted only by constitutional amendment. It is uncertain if disclosure rules can be considered infringements under these absolute provisions, but even if they are considered infringements, it is likely that the disclosure provisions can be designed so as not to violate the RF absolute protections. Furthermore, RF provides relative protection of the freedom of expression and association. Disclosure rules would probably not infringe the freedom of expression but are likely to be considered infringements of the freedom of association. Restrictions of the freedom of association can only be implemented in the order specified in RF and since the order for restricting the freedom of association is very rigid, it is unlikely that such a restriction would be allowed under the current RF. The DoJ has expressed that the pending proposal will not include a proposal for a constitutional amendment. For Sweden to fulfill its international obligations in regards of transparency in campaign finance, more extensive disclosure rules must be implemented than those included in the agreement between some parties in parliament and those included in the 2004 proposal. The DoJ has expressed, however, that the pending proposal will be modeled upon both the voluntary agreement and the 2004 proposal. It is therefore not entirely unlikely that the pending proposal will be either illegal under the constitution or not far reaching enough, or both. / I Sverige saknas regler som kräver av politiska partier och kandidater att redovisa mottagna donationer (redovisningskrav). Detta innebär att inskränkningen endast får göras enligt i RF stadgad ordning. Eftersom möjligheterna att inskränka föreningsfriheten enligt RF är mycket små är det tveksamt om en sådan inskränkning är möjlig att införa utan grundlagsändring. Justitiedepartementet har dock uttryckt att det nya förslaget inte kommer att inkludera något förslag till grundlagsändring. För att Sverige ska uppfylla sina internationella åtaganden avseende öppenhet i valfinansieringen måste mer långtgående redovisningskrav införas än de som ingår i den frivilliga överenskommelsen och som föreslogs av utredningen 2004. Justitiedepartementet har dock uttryckt att just utredningen från 2004 och den frivilliga överenskommelsen ska ligga till grund för de nya redovisningskraven. We, then, a survey of contacts in the Jewish community in general had with the Greco-Roman both the diffusion and exchange of their values as in the spaces occupied by both cultures and their symbolic conceptions. Thus, we studied the influence of Greek meal in the writings of Luke and Acts. First, in exegetical reading of Luke 24.13-53, the disciples on the way to Emmaus, we see evidence that this narrative, especially in the scene of the table, the meal was marked by the inclusion of a foreigner. In a way, the constitution of the Lucan community points, especially regarding the meal for the formation of their identity. Then we find in the writings of Luke-Acts the conse-quences of contact. The material of Luke, both the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, presents narratives that focus on table therefore found that the act of Jesus was at table with unqualified persons, according to Jewish customs and the prospect of this material Lucan, shows the influence of Greek meal in the practice of Jewish followers of Jesus and that this practice was assimilated by this community in the early years of its formation. / Nossa pesquisa tem como meta verificar a influência da refeição helênica nos costumes de uma comunidade judaica do Mediterrâneo no primeiro século. Fizemos, então, um levantamento dos contatos em que a comunidade judaica, em geral, teve com a cultura greco-romana, tanto na difusão e troca de seus valores como nos espaços ocupados por ambas as culturas e suas concepções simbólicas. Em seguida, estudamos a influência da refeição grega nos escritos do Evangelho de Lucas e em Atos. Primeiramente, na leitura exegética de Lucas 24,13-53, os discípulos a caminho de Emmaús, percebemos nesta narrativa indícios de que, especialmente na cena da mesa, a refeição foi marcada pela inclusão de um estrangeiro. De certa forma, a constituição da comunidade lucana aponta, principalmente no que diz respeito a refeição, para a formação de sua identidade. Por fim, verificamos nos textos de Lucas-Atos as consequências desse contato. O material de Lucas, tanto o Evangelho quanto os Atos dos Apóstolos, apresenta narrativas que dão ênfase à mesa, portanto constatamos que o ato de Jesus estar à mesa com pessoas desqualificadas, segundo os costumes judaicos e na perspecti-va deste material lucano, mostra a influência da refeição grega na prática dos judeus seguidores de Jesus e que esta prática foi assimilada por essa comunidade nos primeiros anos de sua formação.

Para tanto, enfocamos a personagem criada por Collins e as características que a definem como heroína, comparando-a ao modelo heroico clássico descrito por tantos autores da Grécia e Roma, como, por exemplo, Homero, Hesíodo, Vergílio, etc., e considerando também as reflexões sobre o herói tecidas por Campbell em O herói de mil faces (1997), dentre outros títulos e autores que embasam nossos estudos. Percebemos que há, na série, uma mudança na representação de arquétipos literários, a saber, herói clássico versus donzela clássica, visto que Katniss Everdeen assume o papel de herói e Peeta Mellark, tributo masculino, assume o papel de donzela, pois, em grande parte do enredo, é salvo por ela. Dessa forma, buscamos verificar o que desvia a trama em estudo dos moldes então estabelecidos pelos Clássicos, ou seja, como Collins redefine os padrões da Literatura Clássica greco-romana, nos quais o homem era guerreiro e a mulher era dona de casa. Para isso, iniciamos nossas considerações a partir de Jung (2002), porque autores como Randazzo (1996), Vogler (2006) e Meletínski (1998), dentre outros, partem das postulações do psicanalista suíço para discutirem a respeito de arquétipos encontrados na publicidade, literatura e cinema. No percurso do estudo da heroína, realizamos uma breve comparação entre Katniss, outrora escravazida pela Capital (em uma espécie de escravidão velada), que se torna heroína e símbolo de toda uma revolução, e o herói masculino de outra obra, Espártaco, escravo e gladiador da Trácia, que foi líder de uma revolução conhecida por Guerra dos Escravos, conforme se pode comprovar no romance Espártaco, de Howard Fast (1981), publicado originalmente em inglês em 1951, e no filme baseado nesta obra literária, de Stanley Kubrick (1960), com a finalidade principal de comprovar a mudança no tratamento dos arquétipos e averiguar a presença de elementos ligados à cultura romana na série escrita por Collins. Enfim, buscamos verificar de que modo o modelo de Herói Clássico, seja na figura dos heróis mitológicos, seja na personagem histórica de Espártaco, é representado na caracterização da protagonista feminina de “Jogos vorazes” e quais significados tais representações acrescentam à interpretação da série. / The present study aims at analyzing the series titled “The Hunger Games” to demonstrate, by observing the characterization of the female character Katniss Everdeen, how the representation of the heroic model from Classical Antiquity persists in Contemporary Literature. In order to do so, we have focused on the character created by Collins and the features that define her as a heroine, comparing her to the classical heroic model described by several authors in Greece and Rome, such as Homer, Hesiod, Vergil, etc., as well as to specifications about the hero character presented in “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” (1997), by Joseph Campbell, along with additional information on the topic provided by other authors. We have observed a change, in Collins’ novels, regarding the representation of literary archetypes, namely the classical Hero versus the classical Maiden, as Katniss Everdeen takes the role of the Hero and Peeta Mellark, the male tribute, plays the role of the Maiden, for throughout a large part of the plot he is saved by her. Therefore, we seeked to verify what deviates the plot in study from the patterns once established by Classical tradition, or, in other words, to observe how Collins redefines the standards of the Greco-Roman Classical Literature, in which the man was a warrior and the woman was a housewife. Our study is based on Jung (2002) because authors such as Randazzo (1996), Vogler (2006) and Meletínski (1998), among others, consider the postulates of the Swiss psychoanalyst to discuss archetypes found in advertising, literature and cinema. In the course of the study of the heroine, for the purpose of proving the change in the treatment of archetypes and ascertaining the presence of elements related to the Roman culture in the series written by Collins, we made a brief comparison between Katniss, once slaved by the Capitol (in a kind of veiled slavery), who becomes a heroine and a symbol of an entire revolution, and the male hero of another artwork, Spartacus, a slave and gladiator from Thrace who was the leader of a revolution known as the “War of the Slaves,” as it can be seen in Howard Fast’s (1981) novel Spartacus, originally published in English in 1951, and in the film based on this literary work, directed by Stanley Kubrick (1960). Finally, our study demonstrates that the Classical Hero model, whether taken from mythological heroes or from the historical character of Spartacus, plays an important role in the characterization of the female protagonist of “The Hunger Games,” adding different meanings to the interpretation of the series. / Proc. 2015/23592-6

Making histories : nationalism, colonialism and the uses of the past on Cyprus

This research was born out of a need for me to know, as a London-born Greek Cypriot, why the archaeology and history of my place of origin have no shades of grey. The history I learned at school – British school – was fluid, it was about how different actors felt, why they did things; we learnt role play and empathy. At home, and in Greek school, history was black and white, them vs us, Turks vs Greeks and this was the way it had been throughout history. I wanted to known and understand history, not have it ask me questions. I went to university to study archaeology, hoping that by studying the distant past I would find my answers, but I just found more questions. The central research questions of this thesis are: what effect do political events have on state representations of the archaeological and historical record? How can these be analysed? What effect does politics have on archaeology as practiced in Cyprus? This research has addressed these questions by focusing on state uses of the past in Cyprus from 1878 until the present through the analysis of education, the mass media and tourism. The central premise is that states are involved in the creation and maintenance of national and group identities and that by studying these, one is able to understand the uses to which academic areas of study have been put. My research provides an assessment of how the pasts of Cyprus have been used by the British colonial administration and the government of the Republic of Cyprus in attempts to create particular identities relating to colonialism and nationalism. In my analysis I have focused on the three moments that are repeatedly represented as being central to Greek Cypriot literature about the history of Cyprus: the late Bronze Age Mycenaean ‘colonisation’; the classical period; and the folk image. These have been assessed with reference to three media used by all states in the creation and maintenance of national identities: education, the mass media; and tourism.
