An empirical investigation into Green IT practices in the North West Provincial Government / Tebogo Lucia LetlonkaneLetlonkane, Tebogo Lucia January 2014 (has links)
Climate change has been a topic for discussion in the IT industry. The IT (information
technology) sector has been regarded as one of the contributing sectors towards
climate change due to carbon emissions from IT equipment such as computers and
servers. Environmental concerns are gaining incremental attention from organisations
across the globe. Green IT is seen as part of the solution to this problem and has been
defined and discussed by many researchers. The purpose of this study was to
investigate Green IT practices that have been adopted in the NWPG (North West
Provincial Government). The study focused on the three departments which fall under
one central IT section in the department of the provincial treasury. A quantitative study
was conducted in Mafikeng and questionnaires were distributed to collect the data and
it was found that although end-users in the government sector are aware of Green IT,
many still needed a lot of training on Green IT. The research concludes by suggesting

Cette recherche porte sur l'analyse des pratiques et motivations du Management Responsable des Technologies de l'Information (MRTI). Notre premier objectif est de comprendre comment se déclinent le Développement Durable (DD) et la Responsabilité Sociale des Entreprises (RSE) dans la fonction Systèmes d'Information (SI). Le second objectif est de comprendre les motivations de la mise en place d'un MRTI. La réponse à ces objectifs est bâtie en conjuguant recherche empirique et approches théoriques. Ce faisant, un cadre original d'analyse des motivations éthiques et institutionnelles du MRTI est élaboré et vérifié. L'analyse des résultats, à différents stades de la recherche, a permis de proposer (1) une typologie des Green IT, (2) une proposition de modèle de cycle de vie d'un MRTI et (3) une typologie des différentes stratégies (active, pro-active, réactive et rétroactive) des organisations face aux pressions environnementales. / This research focuses on the analysis of the motivations and practices of Responsible Management of Information Technology (RMIT). Our first goal is to understand how Sustainable Development (SD) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are reflected in Information Systems (IS). The second objective is to understand the motivations of establishing a RMIT. The answer for these objectives is built by combining empirical and theoretical approaches. In so doing, an original analysis frame of ethical and institutional motivations for RMIT is developed and verified. The analysis of the results, at various levels of the research, has to offer (1) a Green IT typology, (2) a RMIT life cycle proposal and (3) a typology of organization strategies (active, pro-active, reactive and retrospective) facing environmental pressures.

Hur logistikföretag använder informationssystem vid hantering av miljömässigt hållbara leverantörskedjor : En fallstudie om koncernen PostNordMalmberg, Daniel, Hacksell, Henrik January 2019 (has links)
Få människor i dagens samhälle har undkommit vetskapen om att vår miljö håller på att förändras. Redan 1987 kom organisationen World Commission on Environment and Development ut med en varning om att miljön försämras just på grund av hur mänskligheten agerar. Det finns många faktorer som bidragit till människans påverkan på klimatet. En av dessa faktorer är leverantörskedjor och hur organisationer strukturerar och förhåller sig till dessa. Ett företag med omfattande leverantörskedja är PostNord och de står inför många utmaningar i området liksom många andra logistikföretag. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka hur informationssystem kan bidra till arbetet att skapa en miljömässigt hållbar leverantörskedja. Forskningsfråga: Hur används informationssystem i logistikföretag för att uppnå målet att skapa mer miljömässigt hållbara leverantörskedjor? Teorin som används i denna uppsats är modellen Green IT Readiness som utvecklats med tanken att mäta hur väl ett företag arbetar med och är öppen för användningen av miljömässigt hållbar IT. Modellen går att brytas ner i fem olika komponenter. Utifrån detta har en dokumentanalys och tre intervjuer genomförts med anställda hos PostNord för att samla empiri. Dessa har sedan analyseras utifrån den angivna modellen. Sammanfattningsvis syns det i empirin att logistikföretaget PostNord arbetar med informationssystem i sin leverantörskedja i förhållande till aspekterna i Green IT Readiness. Baserat på empirin kan man se att informationssystem används mycket hos PostNord för att påverka leverantörernas attityd kring hållbarhetsarbetet. En annan aspekt som är värd att nämna kring PostNords användning av informationssystem i det här syftet är att många av de beslut som tas inte går att automatisera helt och hållet. Ett annat centralt tema som verkar framkomma i empirin är att informationssystem används hos PostNord för att skapa centraliserad styrning av hållbarhetsarbetet i leverantörskedjan. I denna forskning blir det tydligt att logistikföretaget PostNord har ett flertal sätt att använda sig av informationssystem för att skapa mer miljömässigt hållbara leverantörskedjor.

Previous issue date: 2011 / Nenhuma / A demanda da sociedade por respostas imediatas às questões ambientais tem pressionado as organizações a tomarem medidas para tornarem seus negócios verdes, isto é, com mínimo impacto ambiental. Neste contexto, Green IT (Tecnologia da Informação Verde) surge como uma alternativa a tornar os processos vinculados à Tecnologia da Informação, de maneira geral, mais sustentáveis ambientalmente. Esta pesquisa propõe um método e um modelo conceitual para avaliação da maturidade em Green IT nas organizações. A proposta é embasada em um levantamento bibliográfico, envolvendo temas correlatos como Responsabilidade Social Corporativa, Gestão Verde, Sustentabilidade Ambiental e Green IT, propriamente dita, tendo sido avaliada por meio de um painel com especialistas nas temáticas abordadas. O modelo conceitual proposto é constituído de quatro dimensões identificadas a partir da revisão da literatura: economia, tecnologia, meio ambiente e processo, e possui uma escala de maturidade em Green IT formulada a partir de alguns modelos de referência estudados. A partir deste modelo, construiu-se o método de avaliação em Green IT que visa identificar o nível de maturidade da organização. Ele se divide em três etapas: (i) contextualização, (ii) aplicação e (iii) análise e discussão. Este método envolve observações diretas, entrevistas e análise de documentos, além de um formulário de análise - baseado na escala de maturidade proposta - e um gráfico ilustrativo da maturidade da organização, cunhado neste estudo como Green IT Diamond. Ambos, método e modelo propostos, foram aplicados no SAP Labs Latin America - subsidiária da empresa de software SAP, com o objetivo de evidenciar empiricamente as proposições. Os resultados oriundos desta aplicação foram discutidos à luz do modelo teórico proposto e do referencial teórico consultado, o que possibilitou avaliar a maturidade em Green IT e identificar pontos de melhoria na organização. / Society claims for immediate responses to the environmental concerns have pushed organizations to adopt measures for greening their business, i.e., with minimum environmental impact. In this context, Green IT emerged as an alternative to make the processes related to Information Technology more sustainable. This research proposes a conceptual model and a method to evaluate Green IT maturity of organizations. This proposal is based on literature review involving related topics like Corporate Social Responsibility, Green Management, Environmental Sustainability, and Green IT, itself, and it was evaluated by a panel of experts in the tackled subjects. The conceptual model consists of four dimensions identified from the literature review: economy, technology, environment and process, and has a maturity scale proposed in Green IT from some reference models studied. From this model, it was constructed a method of Green IT evaluation which aims to identify the maturity level of the organization. It is divided into three stages: (i) context, (ii) implementation and (iii) analysis and discussion. This method involves direct observations, interviews and documents' analisys, and an Analysis Form - based on the maturity scale proposed - and a graph illustrating the maturity of the organization, coined in the study of Green IT Diamond. Both, the proposed method and model, were applied in SAP Labs Latin America - a subsidiary of the software company SAP - with the purpose of analysing the propositions empirically. The results from this application were discussed in light of the theoretical model and theoretical framework consulted, which allowed to evaluate Green IT maturity and identify areas for improvement within the organization.

Scania InfoMate is represented in Sweden, France, Holland andLatin America with totally 650 employees.The objective for this thesis is to evaluate the environmental work within InfoMate andpropose improvements. The thesis explains how a green approach of IT can increaseprofitability of the company. Green IT doesn’t only consist of taking responsibility of theenvironmental change; it is as much about decreased cost, increased efficiency and anenhanced image.Green IT is much about reducing energy consumption. The thesis makes it clear that it alreadyexist an ongoing work with this within InfoMate but with the economical approach as thedriving force. Mainly is it the increment in the number of virtualized servers that hasdecreased the energy consumption per server. However, there is a great potential to dosubstantial improvements. An important part of the environmental work is to engage theemployees by education, as well as connect the environmental policy of Scania to InfoMate,and make it visible to one and all within the IT organisation. Last but not the least, it isimportant to do measurements and follow up how the environmental work proceeds and whatit results in, in a motivation purpose. The consumer society exploits the earth’s resources more than the earth itself has capability to produce. This over-consumption causes a mass production of products, which mean that more greenhouse gases are being emitted to the atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why the earth’s temperature is rising, where the result of it is worldwide disasters. The paper consumption is part of the causes to climate change, but this is something we can prevent by just changing little things in our everyday lives. Our question is: What does it actually take for us to stop wasting paper as we do? Is it possible at all? We decided to study what the IT-center of Jonkoping county council need to do to reduce their office paper printing. A survey and interviews were made to get to know the employees way to work. Many are very positive towards electronic documents and do not mind a change, as we can see in the results. But many admitted that they have a way to work that is hard to break. With these studies and previous cases, we found a solution for the IT-center. The solutions are reported in an electronic brochure.

Towards a mutually sustainable environmentally friendly information technology policy framework for South African small, medium and micro enterprisesWessels, Janelle 05 July 2011 (has links)
A number of problems have served as motivators for this study: Environmental deterioration as a risk to economic facilitation; missed organisational green competitive opportunities; South Africa's need as a developing country for the growth of small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs); and information technologies as an aid for ecological and economical problems. Accordingly, this research has aimed to suggest environment-friendly information technology policies that can be implemented in South African SMMEs, engendering mutually beneficial sustainability for the three domains (or contextual study elements) ‘Environment’, ‘Organisation’ and ‘Information Technology’. The methodology used involves an interpretive research approach, a literature survey based on document analyses, and an empirical study based on green information technology expert interviews. In collecting the data, the theory of three of the five Multiple Perspectives Approach perspective types was applied; for the data analysis, the Hierarchical and Signed components constituting the Directed Graphing Method where applied. The output of this study includes an explanation of the relationships that exist between the study elements and that lead to mutually beneficial sustainability. It also includes the identification of Key Sustainability Factors for each of the research elements, as high level critical goals to be achieved by green information technology policy developers in pursuing mutually beneficial sustainability. Furthermore, the output contains contextually consolidated Key Sustainability Factor Enablers, to serve as policy recommendations for implementation by green information technology practitioners toward ensuring mutually beneficial sustainability; and, finally, a sample integration of these Key Sustainability Factor Enablers, now referred to as Conceptual Policy Views, such as may have been produced by typical green information technology policy developers in selecting and prioritising views for organisational utilisations. In answering the main research question of this study, as well as providing its key outcome, a conceptual framework has been produced which comprises information technology policies that are supported to be feasible for implementation as well as of mutual benefit in terms of sustainability for the ‘Environment’, South African SMME ‘Organisations’ and ‘Information Technology’ itself. This provides an ordered and related means of implementing information technology policies, while also relating these policies to their respective mutually beneficial Key Sustainability Factors. Strategic planning, toward incorporating the conceptual framework into organisational policy, is thus enabled.
