In the Czech Republic is born to 5 % of SGA / IUGR children, about 5, 000 children a year, and their incidence is increasing. In 10 - 15 % does not occur postnatal compensation growth acceleration and growth retardation is then further deepens. Since 2003, these children can be treated by recombinant growth hormone in supraphysiological doses. Master thesis brings informations about SGA / IUGR children and their growth parameters during the first 2 years from the beginning of treatment when the monitoring was carried out at three - month intervals. The results are compared with the group of patients treated with growth hormone for growth hormone deficiency. Growth data was processed by a group of 57 SGA / IUGR children, which was compared with data of 34 children with growth hormone deficiency treated between 2003-2015 with growth hormone. Treatment of both groups of patients was carried out by a suitable therapeutic protocol, with the dose of GH by the respective diagnosis. These parameters were monitored: body height and weight, growth rate, BMI and weight - height ratio of patients. SGA / IUGR and GHD patients showed different growth profile in the initial phase of treatment when GHD patients had higher acceleration peak after 3 months of starting treatment and steeper increase in growth rate....

Thesis (M. Sc. Agriculture (Animal Production)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of replacing soya bean meal
with yellow mealworm larvae meal (Tenebrio molitor) in a diet on productivity, gut
morphology, carcass characteristics and bone morphometrics of Ross 308 broiler
chickens aged one to 42 days. In each experiment, a total of 360 Ross 308 broiler
chickens were randomly assigned to the five dietary treatments, each treatment having
four replications, and 18 chickens per replicate. Five diets were formulated to contain
yellow mealworm replacement levels at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% to meet the nutrient
requirements of Ross 308 broiler chickens. Data was analysed using the General
Linear Model procedures of the Statistical Analysis System, Version 9.3.1 software
program. Fisher’s least significant difference (LSD) test was applied for mean
separation where there were significant differences (P<0.05). A quadratic regression
model was used to determine the levels for optimal responses in the variables
measured.
The first experiment determined the effect of replacing soya bean meal with yellow
mealworm larvae meal on productivity and gut morphology of unsexed Ross 308
broiler chickens aged one to 21 days. Replacement of soya bean meal with yellow
mealworm meal in a diet had no effect (p > 0.05) on feed intake, growth rate, FCR,
live body weight, ME intake and nitrogen retention of unsexed Ross 308 broiler
chickens aged one to 21 days. Replacing soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal
in a diet did not affect (p > 0.05) caecum weight of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens.
However, replacing soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in a diet increased (p
< 0.05) gastro intestinal tract, crop, ileum and large intestine weights. Crop and ileum
lengths of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 21 days were not affected (p >
0.05) by replacement of soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in the diet.
However, replacing soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in a diet increased (p
< 0.05) gizzard, caecum and large intestine lengths of unsexed Ross 308 broiler
chickens aged 21 days. Yellow mealworm meal in a diet did not affect (p > 0.05) gut
organ digesta pH values of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 21 days.
The second experiment determined the effect of replacing soya bean meal with yellow
mealworm meal in a diet on productivity, gut morphology, carcass characteristics and bone morphometrics of Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. Replacement
of soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in a diet did not affect (p > 0.05) growth
rate, FCR, ME intake and nitrogen retention of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged
22 to 42 days. However, replacing soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in a
diet affected (p < 0.05) feed intake and live body weight of male Ross 308 broiler
chickens aged 22 to 42 days. Broiler chickens on diets containing 75 or 100% yellow
mealworm meal had higher (p < 0.05) intakes than those on diets containing no yellow
mealworm meal. Similarly, male broiler chickens on diets having 50% yellow
mealworm meal had higher (p < 0.05) live body weights than those on diets containing
no yellow mealworm. Quadratic equations indicated that feed intake and live body
weight of male Ross 308 broiler chickens were optimized at yellow mealworm meal
replacement levels of 13 and 61%, respectively. The present study showed that
replacing soya bean meal with yellow mealworm meal in a diet did not affect (p > 0.05)
gut organ digesta pH values, gut organ weights, gut organ lengths, meat colour, meat
pH values, bone morphometric values, carcass part weights and meat sensory
attributes of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 42 days. However, meat from
chickens on diets containing yellow mealworm meal was softer (p < 0.05) than meat
from chickens on diets having 100% soya bean meal.
It is concluded that soya bean meal can be replaced with yellow mealworm larvae
meal in a diet at 25, 50, 75 and 100% levels without having adverse effects on
production and carcass characteristics of Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 42
days

Self-Consistency of the Lauritzen-Hoffman and Strobl Models of Polymer Crystallization Evaluated for Poly(ε-caprolactone) Fractions and Effect of Composition on the Phenomenon of Concurrent Crystallization in Polyethylene BlendsSheth, Swapnil Suhas 17 October 2013 (has links)
Narrow molecular weight fractions of Poly(ε-caprolactone) were successfully obtained using the successive precipitation fractionation technique with toluene/n-heptane as a solvent/nonsolvent pair. Calorimetric studies of the melting behavior of fractions that were crystallized either isothermally or under constant cooling rate conditions suggested that the isothermal crystallization of the samples should be used for a proper evaluation of the molecular weight dependence of the observed melting temperature and degree of crystallinity in PCL. The molecular weight and temperature dependence of the spherulitic growth rate of fractions was studied in the context of the Lauritzen-Hoffman two-phase model and the Strobl three-phase model of polymer crystallization. The zero-growth rate temperatures, determined from spherulitic growth rates using four different methods, are consistent with each other and increase with chain length. The concomitant increase in the apparent secondary nucleation constant was attributed to two factors. First, for longer chains there is an increase in the probability that crystalline stems belong to loose chain-folds, hence, an increase in fold surface free energy. It is speculated that the increase in loose folding and resulting decrease in crystallinity with increasing chain length are associated with the ester group registration requirement in PCL crystals. The second contribution to the apparent nucleation constant arises from chain friction associated with segmental transport across the melt/crystal interface. These factors were responsible for the much stronger chain length dependence of spherulitic growth rates at fixed undercooling observed here with PCL than previously reported for PE and PEO. In the case of PCL, the scaling exponent associated with the chain length dependence of spherulitic growth rates exceeds the upper theoretical bound of 2 predicted from the Brochard-DeGennes chain pullout model. Observation that zero-growth and equilibrium melting temperature values are identical with each other within the uncertainty of their determinations casts serious doubt on the validity of Strobl three-phase model.
A novel method is proposed to determine the Porod constant necessary to extrapolate the small angle X-ray scattering intensity data to large scattering vectors. The one-dimensional correlation function determined using this Porod constant yielded the values of lamellar crystal thickness, which were similar to these estimated using the Hosemann-Bagchi Paracrystalline Lattice model. The temperature dependence of the lamellar crystal thickness was consistent with both LH and the Strobl model of polymer crystallization. However, in contrast to the predictions of Strobl’s model, the value of the mesomorph-to-crystal equilibrium transition temperature was very close to the zero-growth temperature. Moreover, the lateral block sizes (obtained using wide angle X-ray diffraction) and the lamellar thicknesses were not found to be controlled by the mesomorph-to-crystal equilibrium transition temperature. Hence, we concluded that the crystallization of PCL is not mediated by a mesophase.
Metallocene-catalyzed linear low-density (m-LLDPE with 3.4 mol% 1-octene) and conventional low-density (LDPE) polyethylene blends of different compositions were investigated for their melt-state miscibility and concurrent crystallization tendency. Differential scanning calorimetric studies and morphological studies using atomic force microscopy confirm that these blends are miscible in the melt-state for all compositions. LDPE chains are found to crystallize concurrently with m-LLDPE chains during cooling in the m-LLDPE crystallization temperature range. While the extent of concurrent crystallization was found to be optimal in blends with highest m-LLDPE content studied, strong evidence was uncovered for the existence of a saturation effect in the concurrent crystallization behavior. This observation leads us to suggest that co-crystallization, rather than mere concurrent crystallization, of LDPE with m-LLDPE can indeed take place. Matching of the respective sequence length distributions in LDPE and m-LLDPE is suggested to control the extent of co-crystallization. / Ph. D.

Nickel superalloys are used for high-temperature application in energetic and aerospace industry. They are exposed to aggressive environment at high temperatures with the interactions between fatigue and creep processes, high-temperature oxidation, corrosion and erosion. Lifetime extension of such strained parts while increasing the performance of particular machine is possible by applying protective surface coatings. The subject of this work is to investigate the fatigue failure mechanisms of superalloy Inconel 713LC at 800 °C and to compare these mechanisms between material with a protective coating based on Al-Si and material without coating. The location of initiation fatigue cracks, their propagation and the fatigue crack propagation rate in some areas were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Based on previous research it was found that the application of the coating AlSi has a positive effect on lifetime of alloy Inconel 713LC. These results were confirmed and estimated in the diploma thesis.

Growth rate control of periplasmic product retention in Escherichia coliBäcklund, Emma January 2008 (has links)
The recombinant product is secreted to the periplasm in many processes where E. coli is used as host. One drawback with secretion is the undesired leakage of the periplasmic products to the medium. The aim of this work was to find strategies to influence the periplasmic retention of recombinant products. We have focused on the role of the specific growth rate, a parameter that is usually controlled in industrial bioprocesses. The hypothesis was that the stability of the outer membrane in E. coli is gained from a certain combination of specific phospholipids and fatty acids on one side and the amount and specificity of the outer membrane proteins on the other side, and that the specific growth rate influences this structure and therefore can be used to control the periplasmic retention. We found that is possible to control the periplasmic retention by the growth rate. The leakage of the product increased as the growth rate increased. It was however also found that a higher growth rate resulted in increased productivity. This resulted in equal amounts of product inside the cells regardless of growth rate. We also showed that the growth rate influenced the outer membrane composition with respect to OmpF and LamB while OmpA was largely unaffected. The total amount of outer membrane proteins decreased as the growth rate increased. There were further reductions in outer membrane protein accumulation when the recombinant product was secreted to the periplasm. The lowered amount of outer membrane proteins may have contributed to the reduced ability for the cell to retain the product in the periplasm. The traditional way to control the growth rate is through a feed of substrate in a fed-batch process. In this work we used strains with a set of mutations in the phosphotransferase system (PTS) with a reduced uptake rate of glucose to investigate if these strains could be used for growth rate control in batch cultivations without the use of fed-batch control equipment. The hypothesis was that the lowering of the growth rate on cell level would result in the establishment of fed-batch similar conditions. This study showed that it is possible to control the growth rate in batch cultivations by using mutant strains with a decreased level of substrate uptake rate. The mutants also produced equivalent amounts of acetic acid as the wild type did in fed-batch cultivation with the same growth rate. The oxygen consumption rates were also comparable. A higher cell density was reached with one of the mutants than with the wild type in batch cultivations. It is possible to control the growth rate by the use of the mutants in small-scale batch cultivations without fed-batch control equipment. / QC 20101108

An Ecological and Distributional Analysis of Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva)Taylor, Gregory Watson 01 August 2018 (has links)
Understanding the impacts of climate change is critical for improving the conservation and management of ecosystems worldwide. Ecosystems vary along a precipitation and temperature gradient, ranging from tropical jungles to arid deserts. The Great Basin is a semi-arid eco-region that is found within the western United States. Plant communities within the Great Basin range from sagebrush valleys to sub-alpine conifer forests found at high elevation areas. It is predicted that the Great Basin will experience prolonged periods of drought, more intense fires, and greater variability in average annual and monthly precipitation, all in response to changes in climate patterns. At the lower elevations, sagebrush communities are expected to experience less suitable habitat conditions, however, less is understood about vegetation response at upper elevations. Understanding forest composition and structure at these upper elevations within the Great Basin will help us better understand potential impacts from climate change. In chapter 1, we characterized Pinus longaeva (Great Basin bristlecone pine D.K. Bailey) forest structure and composition. We mapped this tree species distribution and characterized forest structure and composition using a sampling protocol that included both biophysical variables and individual tree characteristics. We collected data from 69 mixed and homogenous P. longaeva stands found within the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau. Results suggest that P. longaeva forest structure and composition exhibit high structural variability in tree characteristic measurements like density, basal area, growth rate, age, and in biophysical variables such as substrate type, slope, aspect, elevation, average monthly temperature and precipitation, latitude, and longitude. This study also found that variability in forest composition and structure in P. longaeva forests allows for greater flexibility in the breadth of life-history strategies and probable resiliency to climate change. In chapter 2 we used remote sensing images with high spatial resolution to identify 685 unique P. longaeva stands on 42 mountain ranges. Pinus longaeva was found on the White Mountains on the western edge of the Great Basin to the Colorado Plateau's Henry Mountain and West Tavaputs Plateau in the East, and from the Spring Mountains in the South to the Ruby and Spruce Mountains in the North. Stands covered 113,886 ha across the geographic distribution. A comparison between our maps and those produced by David Charlet found a total of 36% overlap of P. longaeva. We mapped 58 unique stands that the control dataset lacked and 11 stands that we did not include. We believe that this is the most comprehensive P. longaeva distribution map created to date.

The trace metals and pesticides are commonly found in surface water receiving industrial and agricultural effluents. However, the potential negative effects of these compounds on aquatic ecosystems have not been deeply studied. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess the single and combined effects of aluminum (Al) and atrazine on the development and growth rate of duckweed, Lemna minor L. The single exposures were implemented with either Al or atrazine at the concentration of 5, 50 and 500 μg L-1 and a binary exposure was conducted with 50 μg L-1 of Al and 5 μg L-1 of atrazine for two weeks. The results revealed that both Al and atrazine at the concentration of 500 μg L-1 strongly inhibited the development and growth rate of the duckweed. On the contrary, the mixture of Al and atrazine showed antagonistic effects on the plant. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the combined effects of these two contaminants on the duckweed. Therefore, our results could be useful for environmental managers in setting up and adjusting the safe guideline values in Vietnam for Al and atrazine in natural waters in term of ecological health protection. / Kim loại nặng và thuốc trừ sâu thường được tìm thấy trong các nguồn nước mặt, nơi tiếp nhận nước thải công nghiệp và nông nghiệp. Do đó, mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này nhằm đánh giá những ảnh hưởng riêng lẻ và kết hợp của nhôm (Al) và atrazine lên sự phát triển và tốc độ sinh trưởng của bèo tấm, Lemma minor L. Sự phơi nhiễm riêng lẻ với Al hoặc atrazine được thực hiện ở các nồng độ 5, 50 và 500 μg L-1, trong khi đó, quá trình phơi nhiễm kết hợp được tiến hành với Al tại nồng độ 50 μg L-1 và atrazine tại nồng độ 5 μg L-1 trong hai tuần. Kết quả cho thấy cả Al và atrazine ở nồng độ phơi nhiễm 500 μg L-1 kìm hãm mạnh mẽ sự phát triển và tốc độ sinh trưởng của bèo tấm. Ngược lại, sự kết hợp Al và atrazine dẫn kết tác động triệt tiêu trên bèo tấm. Theo sự hiểu biết của chúng tôi, đây là ghi nhận đầu tiên về những ảnh hưởng kết hợp của hai chất gây ô nhiễm này lên bèo tấm. Vì vậy, những kết quả này có thể hữu ích cho các nhà quản lý môi trường tại Việt Nam trong việc thiết lập và điều chỉnh các giá trị an toàn đối với Al và Atrazie trong môi trường nước tự nhiên về khía cạnh bảo vệ sức khỏe sinh thái.
