Ela deveria ter sido apresentada em 1973, mas devido à ação da censura, só foi encenada em 1980. Apesar de sua trilha sonora ter ficado famosa (destacando-se canções como “Tatuagem”, “Fado tropical” e “Cala a boca, Bárbara”), a peça não tem sido objeto de análises mais detidas. Geralmente, Calabar tem sido interpretada como uma crítica alegórica ao governo militar. Embora não neguemos tal leitura, pretendemos acrescentar uma outra ao comparar o texto de Buarque e Guerra com os textos citados por eles na bibliografia histórica presente até à 22a edição do livro. Examinando tais obras históricas, percebemos que Calabar as reescreve na forma de uma paródia carnavalesca, conforme definida por Mikhail Bakhtin, a partir da técnica de colagem. Assim, concentramos nossa atenção no questionamento que Buarque e Guerra fizeram não só do mito de Calabar em si, mas também do discurso histórico que lhe deu origem. Pudemos então perceber que, além de condenar a ditadura militar, Calabar ataca uma tradição cultural que possibilita que discursos autoritários sejam assimilados de forma eficaz pela sociedade brasileira. _____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The play Calabar, o elogio da traição, by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra, was written during the most repressive phase of the Brazilian Military Dictatorship with the intention of discussing the concept of "betrayal" starting from the historical myth that was erected around Domingos Fernandes Calabar, man that helped the Dutchmen to conquer part of the Brazilian northeast at XVII century. It should have been exhibited in 1973, but due to the action of the censorship, it was staged in 1980. In spite of its soundtrack has became famous (standing out songs as "Tatuagem", "Fado tropical" and "Cala a boca, Bárbara"), the play hasn't been object of more exhaustive analyses. Usually, Calabar has been interpreted as an allegorical critic to the military government. Although we don't deny such reading, we intended to increase another one, comparing Buarque and Guerra’s text with the texts mentioned by them at the historical bibliography present until the 22nd edition of the book. Examining these historical texts, we noticed that Calabar rewrites them like a carnival parody, as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin, using the technique of collage. Therefore, we concentrated our attention on the queries that Buarque and Guerra did about the myth of Calabar itself and also about the historical discourse that gave it origin. Then we could notice that, besides condemning the Military Dictatorship, the play Calabar attacks a cultural tradition that makes authoritarian discourses can be assimilated in an effective way by the Brazilian society.

This researches has as it basic proposal the reading of the theatrical text "Calabar O Elogio da Traição", woven between 1972 and 1973, by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra , from three points of view: the creative process, the allegoric representations of the reality and the confrontation with the Federal Censorship. This triple reading is going to establish, as the title of the work indicates, a past/ present dialogue, understanding the piece like privileged historical document. Saying the truth, this work seeks to increase, from the analysis of the creative binomial and creature, not barely more a fragment of the history of theater, but of the own national history. / Esta pesquisa tem como proposta básica a leitura do texto teatral Calabar O Elogio da Traição , urdida entre 1972 e 1973, por Chico Buarque e Ruy Guerra, a partir de três óticas: o processo criativo, as representações alegóricas da realidade e o confronto com a Censura Federal. Esta tripla leitura visa estabelecer, como o título do trabalho indica, um diálogo passado/presente, compreendendo a peça como privilegiado documento histórico. Em verdade, este trabalho busca acrescentar, a partir da análise do binômio criador e criatura, não apenas mais um fragmento da história do teatro, mas da própria história nacional. / Mestre em História
