AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS OF TRIHALOMETHANE AND HALOACETIC ACID FORMATION POTENTIAL MODELING OF CEDAR LAKE

Peterson, Kristian 01 August 2019 (has links)
An exploratory analysis of the trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) formation potential (FP) of Cedar Lake in order to produce formation potential curves for both THM and HAA; determine the THMFP and rate constant and compare to previous studies on Cedar Lake; and develop modeling for the formation potential loss of HAA from laboratory analysis of the raw lake water. While extensive modeling approaches have been explored for THM formation on different water sources, not many have been applied to the reservoir that supplies water to the Carbondale Water Treatment Plant and even fewer have explored the formation and modeling of HAA. Data for this study was obtained through laboratory experiment by applying bleach as a substitute for free chlorine to raw water samples obtained from Cedar Lake and quenching the samples at specific time steps to stop the reaction. Samples were then analyzed for THM content using standard method EPA 524.2R4.1 and HAA content using standard method EPA 552.2. The observed peak formation was 641.2701 µg/L for THM and 426.8 µg/L for HAA, but modeling fitted to the laboratory results indicated that a lower FP provided a better fitting of the data. A detailed analysis of the formed THM and HAA compounds indicated that a model produced for each compound resulted in more appropriate fitting by being able to account for the differing reaction rates and limiting factors of each reaction.

Hydrocarbons are the simplest function of organic chemistry. Although formed only by carbon and hydrogen, this class is one of the most diverse, in which the alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons (AAHs) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) stand out. These substances are mostly fossil raw materials widely used in industry in diverse applications. Because they have low reactivity and are liposoluble, AAHs and PAHs tend to accumulate in nature and in living tissues, leading to genetic mutations and cancer. Oxygenated functionalities in these hydrocarbons broaden their industrial applications and assist in their environmental remediation. Radical oxidation using hydroxyl radicals via TBHP (t-butylhydroperoxide) is a promising route due to the absence of noxious metal residues in the process. At the same time, the use of d-block metals, such as niobium, as heterogeneous catalysts, which are known to have good thermal stability, porosity, larger contact surface and be able to be recovered and reused, have been described as good catalysts for the reaction, allowing for higher yields and softer reaction conditions. Niobium has attracted the interest of many research groups because of its properties and applications in metallurgy, superconductors and supercapacitors, and in organic synthesis. This work focused on the study of the application of niobium oxide as a heterogeneous catalyst in oxidation reactions of AAHs and HAP using TBHP as oxidant. Many reactional variables like the solvent, the catalyst concentration and morphology, as well as temperature have been investigated in order to optimize the reaction for the better conversion to oxygen derivatives. The best obtained condition was using 10 % in mol amorphous Nb2O5 in acetonitrile under reflux with a conversion yield of more than 40 % for any studied hydrocarbon substrate.

Montava, Isaac 28 July 2017 (has links)

Study of the Formation and Control of Disinfection By-Products Originating from a Surface Water Supply on the Volcanic Island of Guam

LaBerge, Erica 01 January 2014 (has links)
Three oxidants have been evaluated for use as alternative chemical pretreatments for Fena Lake, a surface water that supplies the U.S. Navy's Public Water System (PWS) on the volcanic island of Guam. The study consisted of two investigative components. The first and primary component included a bench-scale evaluation to study the effects of different pre-oxidant chemicals on the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). The second and ancillary component included a series of water treatment and distribution system management studies that analyzed DBP formation within the treatment plant and water distribution system. The goal of this research was to reduce total trihalomethane (TTHM) and the five haloacetic acid (HAA5) formations in the PWS. In the primary component of the research, raw surface water from Fena Lake was collected by U.S. Navy personnel and shipped to University of Central Florida (UCF) laboratories for experimentation. Bench-scale tests that simulated the coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration (CSF) that comprises the Navy Water Treatment Plant (NWTP) were used to evaluate the use of two alternative pre-oxidants, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) in lieu of gaseous chlorine (Cl2). The research assessed DBP formation by comparing several pretreatment scenarios, namely: (1) no pretreatment, (2) chlorine pretreatment, and (3) alternative oxidant pretreatment. KMnO4 pretreatment resulted in the lowest percent reduction of TTHMs and HAA5 relative to chlorine pretreatment, at 5.7% and 22.7%, respectively; however, this amount was still a reduction from the results demonstrated for the chlorine pretreatment condition. Without using a pre-oxidant, TTHM and HAA5 formation were reduced by 22.8% and 37.3%, respectively, relative to chlorine pretreatment. Chlorine dioxide demonstrated the greatest TTHM and HAA5 reduction relative to chlorine pretreatment at 34.4% and 53.3%, respectively. The second component of research consisted of a series of studies that evaluated distribution system operations and management alternatives to identify opportunities that could achieve DBP reduction within the PWS. Three concerns that were addressed were the NWTP's compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) Stage 2 Disinfectants/Disinfection By-Products (D/DBP) Rule, variable hydraulic detention times within a small subdivision in the distribution system, and severe weather. It was determined that: (1) A decision based on in-plant studies to cease prechlorination at the NWTP resulted in a decrease in TTHMs and HAA5s throughout the distribution system by 62% and 75%, respectively; (2) A fluoride tracer study led to the discovery of a valved pipeline responsible for elevated DBPs because of excessive water age that when exercised and managed resolved intermittent DBP spikes in the PWS; and (3) when the NWTP's ballasted floc clarifier (BFC) was operated in-series prior to the conventional CSF process during severe weather conditions the TTHM and HAA5 were below 39 ug/L and 29 ug/L, respectively, proving BFC in-series is a practical option for the plant during severe weather.

Ferrugem asiática da soja: relações entre o atraso do controle químico, rendimento, severidade e área foliar sadia de soja (Glycine max L. Merril) / Asian soybean rust: relationship between delay of chemical control, yield, severity and healthy leaf area of soybean (Glycine max L. Merril)

Calaça, Helen Alves 25 January 2008 (has links)
The control of the asian soybean rust is highly dependent of fungicides treatment. The decision of the correct moment of application is critical for the efficiency of the treatment, since delays in the control can become it so inefficacious as the absence of applications. The damage caused by asian soybean rust is decurrent of the reduction of the leaf area, due to vegetal tissue destruction and early defoliation. In view, the influence that the control delay has on the asian rust, and this on the foliage of the soybean plants, the yield loss can be better understood with the use of variable that catch modifications in the leaf area of the host plant. With the objectives to evaluate the effect of the delay in the asian soybean control on the yield and the yield components, the duration (HAD) and absorption of the healthy leaf area (HAA) of soybean plants and on the disease severity, and to examine the relationship between the soybean yield with the healthy leaf area duration, healthy leaf area absorption and asian soybean rust severity, were conducted five field experiments in Agricultural Research and Development Center of the Arysta LifeScience, in Pereiras-SP. The experiments had involved a preventive treatment and treatments that had corresponded the increasing delays in the chemical control. The relationship between the cited parameters above had been evaluated by averages comparison test (LSD) and linear and non linear regressions (p<=0,05). The results had shown that in the situations where the beginning of the asian soybean rust occurs next to the reproductive phase, the yield fall -31 kg ha-1 to -15 kg ha-1 per each day of control delay, being the loss bigger in youngest stadiums and lesser in oldier stadiums. In the relationship between control delay of the asian soybean rust and HAA, 10MJ m-2 does not absorbed per each day of control delay. In the relationship of the control delay of the asian soybean rust and HAD, the duration of the healthy leaf area reduced 2,4 to 1,4 days per each day where the control is delayed. In the relationship between soybean yield and HAA, were obtained 2 kg ha-1 for each MJ m-2 absorbed by the healthy leaf area. In the relationship between soybean yield and HAD, were obtained 9 to 13 kg ha-1 for each day of healthy leaf area duration. The relationship between control delay of the asian soybean rust and disease severity was of 0,25% percentile point for each day of delay in the control. The relationship between soybean yield and severity of the asian soybean rust were of -36 kg ha-1 for each percentile point of severity. The variable that better becomes related with the yield soybean was the healthy leaf area absorption (HAA). Even HAA as HAD are better variables than severity to be used in the yield losses quantification of the asian soybean rust. In the situations that the beginning of the disease occurs next to reproductive phase, control delay of asian soybean rust higher than 28 days show the same result that the control absence. It does not have reduction in the soybean yield if the beginning of the asian soybean rust occurs after the R5 stadium.

Qvarfordt, Malin, Malmberg, Louise January 2015 (has links)
Background: Studies have shown that dogs have a positive effect on humans physical health. They may also increase social interactions, decrease depression, increase peoples selfconfidence and autonomy and reduce anxiety trough animal-assisted interventions. Aim: The aim of this studie is to investigate if dogs can effect well-being in patients within forensic psychiatric care. Method: To investigate the patients experiences a qalitative reserch method were used. Semi-structured interviews were used to answer to the aim of the studie, and analysed with a content analysis. Result: The patients had both positive and negative experiences regarding the presence of the dogs at the unit. The dogs had an impact on the patients well-being by generating joy as well as anger and irritation. They gave a sense of being perceived as an individual, they increased physical activity, improved quality of sleep and had an inpact on self-esteem and self-confidence. The dogs also had an impact on the health facility environment trough an inprovement of the atmosphere at the unit. The dogs gave sense of mening in the everday life, an opportunity for intimacy, a sense of a less controlling environment and they also had an impact on how the patients moved at the unit. Some where proponents and some opponents to the impementation of dogs at the unit. Conclusion: The results shows that the positive experiences tops the negative because the majority of the results shows aspects of improved well-being. Dogs within healthcare facilities are therefore concidered to be a good complementary form of care for nurses working in forensic psychiatric care. This to perform good nursing care, promote well-being and maintain the civil protection and at the same time reduce feelings of being inferior, subordinated and controlled. It is however important to pay regards to the different idividual opinions and find a resolution that suits best.
