HIV positive mothers, perceptions of exclusive breastfeeding in postnatal ward at a particular hospital, Limpopo Province, South AfricaMafokwane, Mothobola Maria 08 1900 (has links)
Exclusive breastfeeding is one of the infant feeding methods recommended by the World
Health Organisation (WHO) in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), especially to HIV positive women of low socio economic
status. The purpose of the study was to determine and describe the HIV positive
mothers’ perceptions towards exclusive breastfeeding in postnatal ward at a particular
hospital in Limpopo Province, South Africa.
Qualitative exploratory research design was used to explore and describe the HIV positive
mothers’ perceptions towards exclusive breastfeeding. A grand tour question in an
unstructured interview was used to collect data, followed by probing questions according
to participants’ responses. Data were collected from 15 HIV positive mothers aged 18
years and above. They opted for exclusive breastfeeding, and voice recorder and field
notes were used to capture data. The seven steps of data analysis, adapted from Colaizzi
were used. The findings: Although the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding was known by
mothers, some participants had limited knowledge on the importance of exclusive
breastfeeding. Some health care providers lack up-to-date information on exclusive
breastfeeding. Religious and cultural practices interfere with exclusive breastfeeding.
Coping strategies with the feeding options emerged as well. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Previous issue date: 2006-05-19 / This study had as objective to identify to the perception of mothers and professionals of health on the attention to the health of HIV-Positive children/adolescents in the city of Natal-RN. It is a descriptive-exploratory study with quantitative and qualitative approach, carried through in the Giselda Trigueiro Hospital and in the State and Municipal Health Councils in Natal - RN, from march to december of 2005. The sample was composed by 56 participants, 33 mothers of children who use specialized assistance and 23 professionals. Data collection occurred with the application of a half-structuralized interview. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and qualitative data were submitted to content analysis. Prevailing categories in relation to the cartography of the attention to seropositive children and adolescents in Natal were: Organization and dynamics of the attention; Institutional management and human development; Control and prevention; other contexts of attention; relationship/communication team-patient and organization and functioning of the services. The profile epidemiologist of the children, adolescents and of the people/mothers, who take care of them with HIV/Aids, followed the evolution of the epidemic in the country and the world. It was verified that mothers need care and information; however they make a positive evaluation of the attendance they receive. It was also observed many gaps in the services of assistance, in which the researched group was attended, beyond imperfections in the communication between health professionals and users. The professionals recognize the advances that the politics represent for the assistance of people with Aids; however feel themselves limited by the precariousness of the system and the partner-economic conditions of the people. According to these data, it can be verified great challenges to go through in the context of integrality of the assistance to HIV positive children and adolescents in the city of Natal and in the improvement of the communication in the institution of reference / Este estudo teve como objetivo Identificar a percep??o de m?es e profissionais de sa?de sobre a aten??o ? sa?de de crian?as/adolescentes soropositivos no munic?pio de Natal-RN.

Living with HIV/AIDS in King Williams Town, Eastern CapeChinyama, Ephraim January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the lifestyle decisions of people who are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape. The study was motivated by the ever growing number of people who are now living with HIV/AIDS. Therefore the researcher intended to examine their decisions regarding sexual choices, reproductive health, diet, physical fitness and their coping strategies. The study found that there is very low uptake of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT). Most people only get tested if they are compelled by other factors, like illness and pregnancy. It also found that HIV positive people continue to engage in risky sexual behaviour regardless of their positive status. In addition it also found that HIV positive status does not affect sexual activity and social support from family and friends is a very important factor that is helping the respondents to cope with HIV diagnosis.

Assessing renal function and its association with cardiovascular factors among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patientsChoshi, Joel Mabakane January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. (Physiology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cART on renal function and assess the association between renal function and cardiovascular risk factors in a black rural HIV-positive population in Limpopo Province, Mankweng district. We have conducted a cross-sectional study which included both male and female cART-treated patients (n=84), cART-naïve patients (n=27) and HIV-negative controls (n=44). We have measured biomarkers of renal function (plasma cystatin C, clusterin, retinol binding protein 4 [RBP4]) and determined the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the chronic kidney disease-epidemiology collaboration formula (CKD-EPI). We have also measured blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood glucose (FBG). The prevalence of renal dysfunction was similar among the study groups. A significant difference in RBP4 was found among the groups after controlling for covariates (age, gender, alcohol consumption, BMI, systolic blood pressure and FBG) (F (2, 146) = [4.479], p=0.010). The significant difference in RBP4 was specifically observed between the cART-treated and cART-naïve groups (p=0.008). Cystatin C, clusterin and eGFR were not significantly different among the study groups after controlling for the covariates. The cardiovascular risk factors age (β=0.207; p=0.039), CD4+ T-cell count (β=-0.236; p=0.040), and duration of cART (β=0.232; p=0.043) were independently associated with cystatin C. The use of cART independently associated with RBP4 (β=0.282; p=0.004). Age (β=-0.363; p=0.001), CD4+ T-cell count (β=0.222; p=0.034) and duration of cART (β=-0.230; p=0.034) independently associated eGFR. Renal dysfunction is common in this HIV-positive population, with similar rates as the HIV-negative population. Plasma cystatin C as a promising alternative renal biomarker need to be re-evaluated in this HIV-positive population. RBP4 may be a more promising renal function biomarker in the HIV-positive population. Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with renal dysfunction in this rural HIV-positive population and CD4+ T-cell count may be an independent predictor for renal function.

Feasibility of the Ottawa decision support tool to assist HIV positive mothers' infant feeding choice / Ncheka Moloimang SezarinahSezarinah, Ncheka Moloimang January 2014 (has links)
The study investigated the feasibility of the Ottawa decision support tool to assist HIV
positive mothers' infant feeding choice. The aim was to explore and describe the feasibility of
the Ottawa Decision Support Tool (ODST) in counselling HIV infected pregnant women on
decision-making regarding the choice of safe infant feeding. The finding of this study will
assist and support HIV positive mothers to be independent decision makers in choosing an
infant feeding option for their babies.
A descriptive qualitative research approach guided the researcher to explore and describe
the feasibility of the ODST to assist HIV positive mothers' infant feeding choice. This study is
based on the Ottawa decision support framework (ODSF). Three focus group that comprised
midwives as participants were conducted. The first focus group was conducted in January
2013 and the two subsequent ones in August 2013. Data was analysed using a framework
approach.
The following themes emerged from data-analysis:
• Appropriateness
• Receptiveness of intervention
• Effectiveness
Conclusions were drawn based on the attained objectives of the study. The overall
conclusion was that the ODST is feasible to assist HIV positive mothers' infant feeding
choice. Limitations of the study were identified and recommendations were made for nursing
practice, nursing education and further research. / MCur, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
