Šabatková, Eva January 2011 (has links)
Title: The Vranov Dam and the village of Bítov in the context of 20th century history Author: Bc. Eva Šabatková Department: History & History Didactics Department Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Alena Míšková, Ph.D. Abstract: This thesis is focused on the construction of the Vranov Dam and its consequences. It describes a development of dams both in the Czech republic and in the world. It also analyses reasons for a regulation of the Dyje river, possible alternatives and historical events leading to development of hydroengineering structure near the village of Vranov nad Dyjí. The paper is also focused on people's lives in the village of Bítov, which had to be flooded with regards to construction of the dam. Proposed alternatives of architectonical solution of the new village Bítov, which was built as a replacement for inhabitants of "old" Bítov, are presented, as well as the life of Georg Haas von Hasenfels, the last owner of the Bítov Castle and its abutting domain. The impact of the Vranov Dam on life in today's Bítov is mentioned and discussed at the end of the paper. Keywords: The Vranov Dam, development, Bítov, water service, Georg Haas von Hasenfels

Fermi-surface investigations of rare-earth transition-metal compounds

Polyakov, Andrey 04 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The interplay of partially filled d- or f-electron shells with conduction-band electrons is a key ingredient in new rare-earth transition-metal compounds for the emergence of unusual electronic and magnetic properties. Among which unconventional superconductivity is one of the most studied. Despite many years of intensive experimental investigations and plenty promising theoretical models, unconventional superconductivity still remains hotly debated a very rich topic. One of the fundamental unsolved problems for condensed-matter physicists is the mechanism that causes the electrons to form anisotropic superconductivity. Since electrons in the vicinity of the Fermi level are primarily responsible for superconductivity, in order to better understand the mechanism giving rise to this phenomenon and the origin of complex forces between correlated electrons, knowledge of the Fermi surface and band selective effective mass is essential. Of the many techniques used to study electronic band-structure properties, measurements of quantum oscillations in the magnetization, so-called de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect, in combination with band-structure calculations is the traditional proven tool for studying Fermi-surface topology and quasiparticle effective mass. In the present work, electronic structure and Fermi-surface properties of Ybsubstituted heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 and iron based ternary phosphides LaFe2P2 and CeFe2P2 have been investigated by means of dHvA measurements. For these measurements, capacitive cantilever-torque magnetometry was utilized. In Ce1−xYbxCoIn5, the evolution of the Fermi surface and effective mass was studied as a function of Yb concentration. The observed topology change is consistent with what is expected from the band-structure calculations. For a small Yb concentration, x = 0.1, the band-structure topology and the effective masses remain nearly unchanged compared to CeCoIn5. This contrasts clearly modified Fermi surfaces and light, almost unrenormalized effective masses for x = 0.2 and above. For LaFe2P2 and CeFe2P2, the obtained effective masses are light. Good agreement between the calculated and measured dHvA frequencies was identified only for LaFe2P2. However, for CeFe2P2 strong disagreement was observed. Moreover, different CeFe2P2 single crystals reveal different experimental results. In order to reconcile the results of the dHvA measurements and density-functional-theory calculations more work is necessary.

Etudes des propriétés de transport de mono et de multicouches de graphène épitaxiées sur sic / Study of transport properties of single and multilayers of epitaxial graphene on SiC

Jabakhanji, Bilal 28 September 2012 (has links)
In this work, we present the characterization, mainly in transport, of epitaxial graphene layers produced by controlled sublimation of silicon carbide substrate (SiC). Electronic transport measurements are performed at low temperature (T ~ 1.6 K) and high magnetic field. In the first part, we explain the specific method ('graphite cap') used for growth of the samples studied in this work at CNM, Barcelona. The method of 'graphite cap' provides graphene ribbons homogeneous and isolated for the fabrication of electronic devices.Graphene on SiC gives very different results depending on the conditions of growth (temperature, pressure…) and the face of SiC substrate used: carbon face (C-face) or silicon face (Si-face).On the carbon face, two SiC polytypes have been used for the graphene growth:(i) On axis 6H-SiC: graphene ribbons are obtained on the whole surface. The length of ribbon approaches 600 µm and the width do not exceed 6 µm. The graphene follows the formation of steps on the SiC resulting from surface reconstruction during growth (‘step bunching'), which affects the graphene width. Monolayers were identified by Raman spectroscopy. For all measured samples, we found that the graphene is p-typed doped with a Hall concentration between 5x1012 and 5x1013cm-2. The quantum Hall effect is not observed because of the high doping level. But the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations (SdH) have been well resolved and studied. The phase of the oscillations is equal to zero, which is a signature from the presence of graphene monolayer.(ii) 8° off axis 4H-SiC: graphene ribbons obtained are larger and can reach a length of 600 µm and a width of 50 µm. The use of a SiC substrate with intentional disorientation upon cleavage of the initial surface allows the coalescence of the graphene ribbons. For all measured devices on this sample, we found that the graphene is p-typed doped (as determined from the sign of the Hall effect) with a Hall concentration between 8x1011 and 1013 cm-2. Mobilities varied between 1000 and 11000 cm²/Vs from device to device at 4K. Magnetoresistance revealed both Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, and interference phenomena (weak localization and antilocalization). For some low doped devices, Quantum Hall effect was observed. All quantum phenomena observed are signatures on the intrinsic properties of graphene monolayers. The main drawback of the epitaxial growth technique is the difficulty to control of the carrier density. Here, we investigate a bottom gate of a graphene device, epitaxially grown on the C-face of SiC substrate. The gate was realized by Nitrogen atoms implantation in the SiC crystal. The transport measurements have shown the effectiveness of the gate to control the type of carriers. The quantum Hall effect was observed for both types of carriers with remarkable Hall plateaus width (23 T).On the silicon face, we discuss results obtained from few layer graphene (FLG) grown epitaxially on the (0001) surface of a 6H-SiC substrate. Carriers are now like electrons through the buffer layer that exists on the Si face. The resulting FLG uniformly covers the substrate on which large step bunched terraces are also visible. The FLG is thicker at the step edges, as evidenced by micro-Raman analysis. Indeed, a noticeable anisotropy of the resistance has been detected by magnetotransport measurements at low temperature and high magnetic field. We will argue that this anisotropy originates from different mobilities, in the terraces and at the step edges.

Fermi-surface investigations of rare-earth transition-metal compounds

The de Haas van Alphen effect near a quantum critical end point in Sr₃Ru₂O₇

Mercure, Jean-Francois January 2008 (has links)
Highly correlated electron materials are systems in which many new states of matter can emerge. A particular situation which favours the formation of exotic phases of the electron liquid in complex materials is that where a quantum critical point (QCP) is present in the phase diagram. Neighbouring regions in parameter space reveal unusual physical properties, described as non-Fermi liquid behaviour. One of the important problems in quantum criticality is to find out how the Fermi surface (FS) of a material evolves near a QCP. The traditional method for studying the FS of materials is the de Haas van Alphen effect (dHvA). A quantum critical end point (QCEP) has been reported in the highly correlated metal Sr₃Ru₂O₇, which is tuned using a magnetic field high enough to perform the dHvA experiment. It moreover features a new emergent phase in the vicinity of the QCEP, a nematic type of electron ordering. The subject of this thesis is the study of the FS of Sr₃Ru₂O₇ using the dHvA effect. Three aspects were explored. The first was the determination of the FS at fields both above and below that where the QCEP arises. The second was the search for quantum oscillations inside the nematic phase. The third was a reinvestigation of the behaviour of the quasiparticle effective masses near the FS. In collaboration with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy experimentalists, a complete robust model for the FS of Sr₃Ru₂O₇ at zero fields was determined. Moreover, the new measurements of the quasiparticle masses revealed that no mass enhancements exist anywhere around the QCEP, in contradiction with previous specific heat data and measurements of the A coefficient of the power law of the resistivity. Finally, we report dHvA oscillations inside the nematic phase, and the temperature dependence of their amplitude suggests strongly that the carriers consist of Landau quasiparticles.

Investigation of toxicity, treatability and toxic disinfection by-products formation in chlorinated stabilization ponds effluents with and without post-treatment.

Léo, Luís Fernando Rossi 16 April 2008 (has links)
The main difficulties that the stabilization ponds for sewage treatment systems face to meet the requirements imposed by CONAMA Resolution 357/2005 can highlight the high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus and fecal and total coliform. When the systems use receivers water bodies Class 2 or 3 generate the need for disinfection. Among the different technologies available for the disinfection of sewage, the chlorination is very attractive at reduced cost compared to other technologies, as well as the high experience that companies and municipalities have in this type of system, because the water treatment systems. About the chlorination technologies, the use of sodium hypochlorite becomes interesting for security, simplicity of installation and operation. The disadvantage of using this type of system is given the possibility of formation of toxic by-products, within which you can highlight the trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (AHAs), but this formation can theoretically be reduced by the presence of high concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen in effluents of these systems, for its preferential reaction with the chlorine in the formation of cloraminas. Other possibilities for reducing the training is to reduce the concentration of precursors (organic matter), reduce the dosage of chlorine and use dechlorination method after disinfection. This work, developed in PROSAB / FINEP (National Program for Research on Sanitation) research announcement number 4, developed tests for disinfection of anaerobic and facultative ponds effluents using sodium hypochlorite as a disinfectant, in concentrations of 8.0 mgCl/L and 12.0 mgCl/L. Were also developed tests for disinfection with anaerobic and facultative ponds effluents post-treated by coagulation / flocculation / sedimentation and coagulation / flocculation / flotation with dissolved air, with concentrations of 2.0 mgCl/L and 4.0 mgCl/L. For all of disinfection tests were also conducted dechlorination tests. This made it possible to study the possibilities of reducing the formation of toxic byproducts of the stabilization ponds effluents disinfection with sodium hypochlorite. The THMs and AHAS concentrations were determined by gas chromatography. Through the methods of Standard Methods 20th Edition analyses were carried out physical-chemical parameters of pH, temperature, COD, BOD, total nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, total Kjeldhal nitrogen, free chlorine, chloramines, coliforms and other indicator microorganisms. The formation of THMs was very low, on average below the 20.0 µg/L in all tests, apparently due to high concentrations of NH3-N, the order of 30.0 mg/L. The same did not occur with AHAs. In many tests found concentrations of AHAs exceeded the standard of 80.0 µg/L recommended by the USEPA for drinking water. Dechlorination reduced 52% of AHAs concentrations, in average. Bioassays showed that the presence of free chlorine in the samples increase the acute toxicity in Daphnia similes. Chlorination followed by dechlorination produces effluents with less toxicity than the toxicity of chlorinated and effluent without chlorination.
