Saúde & Segurança para além das prescrições: a dimensão gestionária das atividades / Health & safety

Esta tese explora o campo da Saúde e Segurança no Trabalho - SST destacando as recentes propostas de inclusão dos aspectos psicossociais nas abordagens dos chamados "riscos ocupacionais" que tradicionalmente valorizam os aspectos objetivos (químicos, físicos, biológicos, ergonômicos e de acidentes) e as prescrições. Em busca de novas fundamentações teoricometodológicas, revisita-se conceitos/práticas envolvidos em SST à luz de observações oriundas da atuação como psicóloga em um setor de saúde de uma empresa no ramo de energia e de referenciais teóricos que tomam como pontos de partida e chegada a atividade, a defasagem entre o trabalho prescrito e o real, o diálogo sinérgico entre os saberes e a dimensão coletiva do trabalho. Dentre os referenciais utilizados destacam-se as contribuições de Georges Canguilhem, em especial sua concepção de saúde, a Psicodinâmica do Trabalho e a Ergologia. Sob uma perspectiva ergológica, aponta-se para norteadores de um redirecionamento, para que a prevenção incorpore aquilo que é da ordem do não antecipável, que advém das situações reais com suas dramáticas, encontros de encontros, escolhas e ressingularizações, para além do patrimônio acumulado na forma de normas antecedentes (sem desconsiderá-lo). Nesse sentido, uma vez ressaltada a dimensão gestionária das atividades, seus protagonistas são convocados não apenas a cumprir prescrições elaboradas por especialistas, mas também a exercer, individual e coletivamente, a coautoria na gestão de sua saúde, segurança, trabalho e vida.

Salutogenesis in action : a nature based 'mindfulness for health and wellbeing' programme and its impact on daily life

This research asks whether a focus on nature enables participants on a mindfulness programme to better assimilate mindfulness practice into their daily lives with resultant improvement in health and wellbeing, greater resilience and a more successful approach to their self-management of chronic illness. In doing so it has implications for approaches to healthcare delivery in the management of chronic conditions as well as the teaching and practice of other mindfulness approaches and similar therapeutic interventions. Improvements in participant health and wellbeing, particularly the impact on self-efficacy, the belief that the integration of mindfulness into their lives, their building of a regular practice, helps manage their health conditions and improve their sense of wellbeing, form a key element in the ‘sense of coherence’ that is the mainstay of the Salutogenic approach to health and wellbeing (Antonovsky, 1979). More than 15 million people in the UK live with chronic illness, accounting for more than 50% of all visits to general practitioners and 70% of hospital inpatient stays. This accounts for 70% of the NHS primary and acute care budget and yet it is felt that 70 - 80% of cases could be supported to manage their own conditions with mindfulness based approaches providing a low cost, long term form of such support. Although the separate fields of mindfulness, nature connection and chronic illness have each received attention in the academic literature, little academic research has examined the conjunction of these fields. This thesis builds bridges between the three areas. A research bricolage is constructed which follows participants with diverse backgrounds and chronic health conditions as they engage in a nature based mindfulness programme and subsequent follow-up over 12 months. These case studies are documented by participants using a variety of media and explored through a interpretative phenomenological lens. The study found that a nature focus did help participants incorporate mindfulness practice into their daily lives with resultant benefits in the management of their conditions and their perceived wellbeing. However it also highlighted barriers to successful integration including the impact of family support and ongoing medical interventions. In doing so it contributes to the teaching of mindfulness, providing new ways of engaging participants and a route to its improved integration in daily life. It provides insights into the difficulties faced by those learning mindfulness and leads to greater self efficacy in the management of chronic illnesses. A nature based mindfulness approach to health can improve self management while reducing health care costs in populations with diverse chronic illnesses.

Pelo exposto, esta dissertação tem como objetivo elaborar recomendações baseadas no referencial teórico e nas boas práticas e dificuldades evidenciadas nos estudos de caso, que contribuiam com a implantação de sisteamas de segurança e saúde no trabalho em empresas fabricantes de baterias automotivas. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa optou-se pelo método de pesquisa qualitativa com base na elaboração de dois estudos de caso em empresas localizadas na cidade de Bauru. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados utilizados foram entrevistas semi-estruturadas, análise de documentos e observação in loco. Ao final da dissertação são propostas recomendações para implantação deste sistema relacionadas aos seguintes elementos: alta direção, estratégia organizacional, cultura organizacional, departamento de segurança e saúde do trabalho, técnicos de segurança e saúde do trabalho, recursos humanos, treinamentos, equipes multidisciplinares para solução de problemas de segurança e saúde do trabalho, comunicação interna, resistência à mudança, indicadores de desempenho, ferramentas gerenciais para solução de problemas, gestão de projetos, recompensas e incentivos, e integração dos sistemas. / Organizations have been facing challenges related to their employees' productivity, sustainable development, strategic positioning, motivation and welfare. In such a context, the occupational health and safety systems gains an ever-present major relevance in the companies' results, through the reduction of occupational hazards and the fostering of their workers' health and self-fulfillment. Nevertheless, for the occupational health and safety systems to achieve good results, organizations must be attentive to the difficulties they frequently have to overcome along their implantation process, by seeking to solve them in a structure in-advance manner. As already outlined, this dissertation has a its main purpose the development of suggestions based upon the theoretical referential and on the good practices and difficulties avidenced in the case studies, wich may contribute towards the implantation of the occupational health and safety systems in those companies which manufacture automotive batteries. The qualitative research method was chosen for the development of this work, relying on two case studies in companies in the city of Bauru. The data collection tools used were semi-structured interviews, documents analysis and in loco observation. At the end of this dissertation, suggestions are given for the implantation of such system, related to the elements which follow: high administration, organizational strategy, organizational culture, a department of the occupational health and safety with its respective technicians, human resources, training, multidisciplinary teams for solving the occupational health and safety problems, internal communication, resistance to changes, performance indicators, problem-solving managerial tools, management of projects, rewards and incentives, and also integration to the systems.

Theorizing the State of Health Practices and Climate in Construction via Fourfold Structuration

abstract: Regulatory agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), recognize that decisions regarding occupational health are often economically driven, with worker health only a secondary concern (Ruttenberg, 2014). To investigate the four National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) long-standing health concerns—welding fumes, crystalline silica, noise, and musculoskeletal disorders—a mixed methods research is conducted. Fourfold structuration, a holistic communication process with roots in indigenous/ancient knowledge, is used to organize data and facilitate making tangible relationships of health to productivity and profits that are abstract and often stated by industries, such as construction, as difficult to quantify. From both construction trade worker and occupational health and safety expert interviews data/codes are developed. For the qualitative method, the codes are organized into a constructivist grounded theory depicting the construction industry with regard to its foundation – profits. A theoretical exercise translating the qualitative codes into potential productivity losses is presented as a way for quantifying the abstract relationships of health to productivity. For the quantitative study, the data/codes are used to develop a comprehensive list of practices, barriers to, and catalysts for addressing health in construction. A significant quantitative finding is that occupational health and safety (OSH) experts are not traditionally involved at the highest levels of the OSHA Hierarchy of Controls, where the greatest opportunity to prevent exposure to health hazards is possible. The value of Health and Safety aspects in Product-Service Systems : A case study based on the manufacturing industry / Värdet av hälsa- och säkerhetsaspekter för Produkt-Service System : En fallstudie baserad på tillverkningsindustrin

Companies are expected to reduce the impact on society caused by its operations while at the same time, generate profit for its stakeholders. One way to satisfy both parts is by creating shared values. As the trend of servitization becomes more popular the ability of Product-Service Systems (PSS) to deliver additional value to customers arises. PSS provides an opportunity for developing a sustainable business model to benefit both the society and the stakeholders. A sustainable PSS can be based on the Triple Bottom Line dimensions, environment, economic, and social. Since the economic and environmental advantages have already been studied for PSS:s, the social aspect is yet to be studied in detail. This thesis focuses on the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) theme of the social dimension, for PSS:s. Both the ability to improve the social dimension performance and the role it plays in the value proposition for PSS:s were studied. The thesis has been based on a case study on one company in a Business to Business market. It was found that customers seldom demanded or mentioned health and safety aspects for PSS:s, even when an increase of OSH was achieved by the PSS. However, it could also be concluded that all interviewed thought OSH was important for the company and the employees but there were divided opinions regarding OSH, if it would be put in the value proposition or not. By analysing the customer situation and how it operates, companies should use the customizability of PSS:s to better match their requirements and thus develop the value proposition for the PSS. Cost estimations for accidents have been done which showed that one single accident can cause very high costs. It is a good investment to prevent risks which should be communicated when selling PSS:s. Furthermore, it is important to communicate both internally within the firm, and externally to customers, about what health and safety benefits the PSS will contribute with. / Företag förväntas att reducera påfrestningarna på samhället och miljön orsakade av deras verksamhet och samtidigt fortsätta generera värde till dess intressenter. Ett sätt att tillgodose båda parter är genom att skapa så kallade delade värden. Då trenden att tjänstefiera blir mer och mer populär finns det möjlighet för ett så kallat Produkt-Service System (PSS) att leverera mervärde till kunderna. PSS ger en möjlighet att utveckla en hållbar affärsmodell som gynnar både samhället och intressenterna. Ett hållbart PSS kan grundas på de tre byggstenarna för Triple Bottom Line, miljö, ekonomi och samhälle. Då de ekonomiska och miljömässiga fördelarna redan har studerats för PSS fokuserar denna studie på hur konceptet står sig för den samhälleliga aspekten. I denna rapport studeras arbetshälsa och säkerhet för PSS, både möjligheten att förbättra den samhälleliga aspekten i Triple Bottom Line samt vilken roll dessa värden spelar för en värdepropositionering för PSS. Rapporten har baserats på en fallstudie på ett företag inom marknaden för Business till Business. Det konstaterades att kunderna sällan efterfrågar eller nämner hälso- och säkerhetsaspekter i förhandlingar om PSS, även när en ökning av arbetshälsa och säkerhet uppnåddes. Hur som helst tyckte alla intervjuade att arbetshälsa och säkerhet var viktigt för företag och anställda men det var trots detta delade meningar om det borde vara en del av värdepropositioneringen eller inte. Genom att analysera kundernas situation och hur de arbetar borde företag använda anpassningsbarheten av PSS för att bättre matcha kundernas önskemål och således utveckla värdepropositioneringen för PSS. Kostnadsberäkningar för olyckor har genomförts som visar att en enskild olycka kan orsaka mycket höga kostnader. Det är en god investering att förebygga risker vilket borde kommuniceras vid försäljning av PSS:s. Det är viktigt att både kommunicera internt inom företaget samt externt till kunderna om de hälso- och säkerhetsaspekter som PSS bidrar med.

Based on Case Studies techniques, the present study investigated in four SME not only the way health and safety interventions are carried on, but the reasons why they are conducted that way as well. This investigation made us conclude that lack of available resources, poor information access, the firm culture and management model exert clear influence on the way Heath and Safety actions are conducted. Ergonomics, if conducted in the small firm, will be guided by perception and based on informality, either for changes or measures of the changes. We can conclude that some rules and laws, as well as ergonomic tools, should be developed according to the limitations and needs of the small and medium firms, and so be used to help improve health and safety into them. / Construir ações relacionadas à saúde e segurança nas pequenas e Médias empresas não é tarefa fácil, uma vez que estas empresas precisam lidar com o provimento deficitário de informações, poucos recursos disponíveis e metodologias de ação desenvolvidas de acordo com as características das empresas de grande porte. A partir de estudos de caso, o presente estudo investigou, em quatro PME, a maneira como ações de saúde e segurança são conduzidas, bem como as justificativas para sua forma de condução. A investigação comprovou que aspectos tais como poucos recursos financeiros, pouco acesso à informação, a cultura e o modelo gerencial assumido, exercem grande influência sobre a forma como as ações em SST serão conduzidas, sendo que a Ergonomia, quando houver, será característica pela condução perceptiva e informal das mudanças no local de trabalho. Concluiu-se que algumas normas e leis, assim como ferramentas ergonômicas, deveriam ser desenvolvidas e adaptadas às PME, de forma a facilitar sua utilização e assim promover uma melhora das condições de saúde e segurança nas PMEs, de acordo com suas necessidades e limitações.

In this context the safety culture seeks a healthy and safe environment. Thus, we conducted a case study on an automaker through qualitative research and the participation of 43 employees in the interviewing process to verify the safety culture in the worker's perspective. The utterances of these were compared with the safety culture proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The qualitative data analysis was supported by WEBQDA application by the award three units of meaning, and following aspects: institutional, behavioral and relationship in SST. After data analysis, it was possible to infer that in the workers perspective , the organization's safety culture is based on the use of personal protective equipment, the supervision and training for work, seeking the reduction of accidents. We conclude that the company's safety culture is in line with the recommendations by the IAEA, but it is necessary the involvement of senior management on issues related to health and safety.It is also recommended conducting periodic educational campaigns to promote and solidify the safety culture in the company. / É essencial que a produção e a prevenção de acidentes se mantenham indissociáveis no ambiente organizacional. Neste contexto, a cultura de segurança busca um ambiente saudável e seguro. Desse modo, realizamos um estudo de caso em uma montadora de automóveis, por meio da pesquisa qualitativa e da participação de 43 trabalhadores no processo de entrevistas para verificar a cultura de segurança na perspectiva do trabalhador. As verbalizações dos mesmos foram comparadas com a cultura de segurança proposta pelo International Atomic Energy Agency. A análise dos dados qualitativos foi apoiada pelo aplicativo WEBQDA, mediante atribuição de três núcleos de sentido, sendo eles os aspectos: Institucionais, Comportamentais e de Relacionamento em SST. Após análise dos dados, foi possível inferir que, na visão dos trabalhadores, a cultura de segurança da organização está baseada no uso de equipamentos de proteção individual, na fiscalização e na capacitação para o trabalho, buscando a redução de acidentes. Concluímos que a cultura de segurança da empresa está de acordo com o preconizado pelo IAEA, porém, o envolvimento da alta direção em questões ligadas à Saúde e à Segurança se faz necessário, além da aplicação de campanhas educativas periódicas para promover e solidificar a cultura de segurança na empresa.

3 In the last couple of decades there has not happened much in the “farriery”- department. The work procedure, methods and farrier´s tools have stayed the same over time, which have led to a huge workload that is wearing the active participants out. So think if you were able to ease the working process of horseshoeing for a farrier. The farriery is still first and foremost a profession based on handicraft that has to relay on the farrier´s good memory, sight and sense. The workplaces for a farrier is most of the time at the hiring horse owner`s stables, which makes it harder for the farrier´s to have influence over their working situation. In Sweden shoes horses by both educated and uneducated people, but there is hopes to legalise the profession title by year 2030. One of the greatest advantages through this project, has been to observe and the participant in a farrier´s everyday work. Experimentally mockups and visually shown images have been used as the basis for the discussions with people within the horse industry. The farrier`s work a ethics and work environment are very unexplored subjects in modern time, which influenced the work material in the project´s needs and analysis. The inspiration for the project’s end-result is, among other things, based on horsey´s and the farrier´s ancient origin. As well as the requisites of technology in the work. The end-result is based to decrease the unnecessary repeating work that happens everytime a shoeing emerges. With the help of the Hoof scanner, can the farrier´s have a profile for every single horse i.e. visually images of the hoof, choice of shoes, need of elaboration work, necessary balance adjustments, history and clarified pictures. The functions are able to adjust to every farrier´s need of scene. Documented and visual information can be transcribed (pay it forward) between farrier, veterinary and horse owner.
