A retrospective narrative of the social and emotional experiences of growing up with a unilateral hearing lossOsman, Rizwana January 2017 (has links)
A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, South Africa. December 2017. / Unilateral hearing loss (UHL), commonly known as 'single-sided deafness,'
constitutes an ignored and under-researched population group. The limited
existing research has established that persons with UHL tend to experience
challenges in various social, emotional, language and academic areas, and thus
persons with UHL experience more problems than previously realised. This study
aims to address this gap by exploring the socio-emotional experiences of three
persons with UHL. In addition, the researcher’s personal narrative as a person
with UHL is included to provide another perspective. The participants were
interviewed which provided narratives The theoretical framework of
Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological model (1977-2009) and Vygotsky's (1962-1998)
theories of language were used to interpret the influence of a child's surrounding
social and cultural environments, and their interactions. The narrative data were
analysed and interpreted using coding and categorising processes. Findings from
the personal narratives revealed themes of anger, isolation, frustration as well as,
indicated that children with UHL require assistance regarding disclosing their
hearing loss. Additionally, topics such as ‘teasing’, ‘disturbing experiences during
hearing loss diagnosis’ and ‘feelings of loneliness’ were also revealed. This study
established that a child's surrounding social and cultural environments play a
significant role in shaping their attitudes and perceptions of their unilateral hearing
loss, and not all of the participants experienced disabling social challenges. Those
who have intervention opportunities such as counselling, develop more effective
communication and coping skills required for persons with UHL. In addition, links
between interventions and coping skills were also revealed. Recommendations for
future research include investigating the links between a child with UHL,
intervention and coping skills, with a particular focus on their quality of life
experiences. Significantly, there is a need for intervention programmes that
address the social and emotional needs of children with UHL on an individual
basis.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Introduction: Introduction: Early diagnosis of childhood hearing impairment is
necessary for the confirmation of auditory status and the beginning of (re) habilitation.
These processes are important factors for a better development of the language. The
National Policy on Auditory Health Care (PNASA), 2004, establishes and organizes
actions to promote hearing health, prevention and identification of hearing problems at
all levels of complexity. To this end, the Living Without Boundary Plan, 2011,
guarantees the accessibility of people with any type of disability, to all types of services,
health, education, transportation and social inclusion. Objective: To characterize
demographic and audiological data of the users of a reference center in hearing health,
in the city of São Paulo. Method: This is a descriptive, retrospective observational
study. Local: The study was developed at the Child Hearing Center (CeAC), Research
Laboratory of the Child Hearing Research Line. Patients: A total of 857 patient records
were analyzed from August 2010 to June 2015. These patients performed all the
exams at the Auditory in the Child Center (CEAC), concluding the audiological
diagnosis to define their auditory status. Data collection: The following data were
extracted from the medical record of each user: gender, date of birth, area of residence,
maternity of birth, whether or not the maternity belonged to the Mãe Paulistana / Stork
Network Protection Network, if TANU was performed, If there were indicators of risk
for hearing loss in the history of the child, origin of the referral for audiological
evaluation, age at the first referral center, age at diagnosis completion and outcome of
the audiological diagnosis. Analysis: A descriptive analysis was carried out, with the
main focus being the age of the diagnosis, to observe the goal of early diagnosis,
determinant in the result of the therapeutic intervention. Afterwards, inferential
analyzes were performed to identify which aspects favor or hinder early diagnosis.
Results: The results show that 60% of the users were male; The majority were resident
in the South region (64.2%); The mean age at the beginning of the diagnosis was 2
months of life; The most prevalent complaint was hearing (54.8%) followed by
screening (29.6%); 57.8% of the children performed TANU; The majority of children,
on average, complete the diagnosis in the age group over one year old (50.2%),
followed by children from 0 to 3 months (18.4%); The most prevalent bilateral hearing
loss was profound sensorimotor hearing loss at 12.49%, followed by mild conductive
hearing loss (8.52%). Conclusion: According to the results presented in the study, we
can consider that, the TANU is being very important for the early diagnosis. However,
the demand coming from this type of referral is still low, since its obligation was
established at five years. Therefore, it is important to raise the awareness of those
responsible for children, as well as the professionals who work in this area, in order to
achieve greater adherence to the test, and subsequently reach a higher number in this
observacional descritivo, e retrospectivo. Local: O estudo foi desenvolvido no Centro
de Audição na Criança (CeAC), Laboratório de Pesquisa da Linha de Pesquisa
Audição na Criança. Casuística: Foi realizada a análise de 857 prontuários de
pacientes atendidos no período de agosto de 2010 a junho de 2015. Estes pacientes
A idade média no
diagnóstico, 57,8% realizaram a TANU.
No entanto, a procura proveniente deste tipo

Visually displayed-EMG biofeedback : training muscle relaxation in hearing impaired children :a thesis ...Bene, Cheryl Renee 01 January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to test the use of visually displayed EMG biofeedback as a means for training hearing impaired adolescents to reduce anterior temporalis or frontalis muscle tension . Five male and four female hearing impaired students between the ages of 13 and 15 were chosen from the California School for the Deaf, Fremont, CA to serve as participants. Each participant was randomly assigned to either an experimental or control condition. Participants in the experimental groups were given five 15 minute EMG biofeedback training sessions. An additional group of 4 adolescents with normal hearing from Marshall Junior High School, Stockton, CA served as a hearing control group. The dependent measure was a 5 minute pretest and post-test measurement of muscle tension (in microvolts).
Split-plot analyses were performed to determine if there were significant differences between a ) the .hearing impaired experimental and the hearing impaired control groups, b) the hearing impaired control and the hearing control groups, and c) the hearing impaired experimental group and the hearing control group.
Results of the analyses showed that at post-test both the hearing impaired experimental group and the hearing control group showed a significant decrease in muscle tension F(1,7)=5.85 p< .05. The interaction was nonsignificant. Comparison of the two control groups showed that at post-test the two groups were not significantly different in levels of muscle tension. The comparison between the hearing impaired experimental and the hearing control groups resulted in a significant interaction (Group X Time of Testing) F( 1,6)=9.47, p=.02, and the main effect for time of testing approached significance.
