Effects of the exchange rate on the adoption of hedge accounting: evidence from Brasil / Efeitos da variação cambial na adoção do hedge accounting no Brasil

Sticca, Ralph Melles 04 December 2018 (has links)
Under Accounting Statement CPC 38, from 2010 on Brazilian companies started adopting accounting standards correspondent to IAS 39 regarding hedge accounting, whose disclosure is optional and, in cash flow hedge operations, may avoid losses disclosure in the income statements due to deferred values in other comprehensive income (OCI), promoting better earnings disclosure. In this scenario, by means of statistical models we investigate whether firm\'s financial exposure to currency risk and the high exchange rate depreciation environment promote the deferral of losses on firm\'s OCI and, in addition to the tax deferral on exchange gains and losses, the hedge accounting choice for 379 Brazilian listed companies between 2010- 2017. Our results show that firms\' high leverage in foreign currency, the high exchange rate variation on country level and the tax deferral choice influence positively the hedge accounting choice and, consequently, reduce the disclosure of losses on income statements, evidencing potential earnings management activity, since OCI\'s balances are not entirely understood by analysts and investors (even the most sophisticated). Our paper contributes to the disclosure, accounting choice and earnings management theories, highlighting the claim for enhancement of financial instruments accounting standards on uniformity and comparability.

This work investigates, in the Brazilian stock market, the effect of hedge accounting on the quality of accounting information disclosed, in the disclosure of derivative financial instruments and information asymmetry. To measure the quality of accounting information, the metrics of relevance of accounting information and accounting earnings informativeness were used. For the execution of this work, a general sample consisted of non-financial Brazilian companies, listed on São Paulo’s Stock Market, comprising 150 companies with the highest market value in 01/01/2014. From the overall sample, samples were set up for the implementation of models of value relevance, informativeness, disclosure and information asymmetry. The relevance sample included 758 firms–years observations for the period ranging from 2008 to 2013. The sample for informativeness included 701 firms–years observations for the period from 2008 to 2013. The sample for disclosure had 100 firms–year observations, for the period from 2011 to 2012. The sample for information asymmetry had 100 firms–years observations for the period 2011 to 2012. For the statistical analysis, we used regressions with robust standard errors with POLS approach and Fixed Effects, applied to panel data. In addition to the analysis of the effect of hedge accounting on the disclosure and information asymmetry, we applied the method of propensity score matching. The evidence for the influence of hedge accounting on the relevance of accounting information showed a positive and significant relationship in the interaction with earnings. In the informativeness of accounting earnings analysis, the research showed a negative and statistically significant relationship between earnings when interacted and the hedge accounting dummy variable. As for the evidence found for the influence of hedge accounting on the disclosure of derivatives, there was a positive and statistically significant relationship between the hedge accounting dummy and the disclosure indicator of derivatives. Regarding evidence for information asymmetry, although the coefficients showed the expected effect, they were not statistically significant. Additionally, we incorporated, to the econometric analyzes, a descriptive analysis, in the overall sample, of the use of hedge accounting in Brazil for 2013. Among the 150 companies in the sample, 49 companies used hedge accounting, where 41 companies adopt only one type hedge. The cash flow hedge is the type of hedge more adopted by companies, being used by 42 companies.

Strategic Entry Decisions, Accounting Signals, and Risk Management Disclosure

Zou, Youli 14 January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the economic consequences from hedge accounting signals and risk management disclosure. I first examine the product market consequences to these accounting signals and related disclosure in Chapter 1, then stock market reactions to disclosure requirements in Chapter 2. Chapter 1 examines potential entrants’ strategic entry decisions in response to incumbents’ accounting information and related disclosure. I predict that potential entrants are more likely to enter markets in which the incumbents’ accounting information suggests higher future production costs that are specific to the incumbents themselves. I further hypothesize that the relation is stronger when the accounting signals are accompanied by more disclosure. Using detailed U.S. airline industry data and hedge accounting disclosure under SFAS 133, I find that potential entrants are more likely to enter routes in which the incumbents’ lower accumulated other comprehensive income from fuel hedges suggests their higher future production costs. This entry pattern is stronger when incumbents have more transparent annual report disclosure regarding their fuel hedge programs. The entry pattern is also stronger after a systematic increase in risk management disclosure requirements following the (exogenous) adoption of SFAS 161. Chapter 2 analyzes stock returns of U.S. airlines around events leading up to the adoption of SFAS 161. SFAS 161 enhanced the disclosure requirements for derivatives and hedging activities. I find that U.S. airlines experienced statistically significant positive returns around the key events leading up to the adoption of SFAS 161. I then examine the cross-sectional variation of the returns around these events. Regression results provide initial support for the real effects theory that greater disclosure requirements could distort firms’ hedging and production decisions and lead to suboptimal behavior. In summary, this dissertation provides evidence that competitors use hedge accounting signals and related disclosure in making product market decisions. Meanwhile, additional risk-management disclosures may also distort firms’ hedging and production behavior, leading to suboptimal decisions. This dissertation sheds light on the ongoing projects by the FASB and the IASB on hedge accounting and disclosure and informs the regulators that costs and benefits should be weighted in hedge accounting policy setting.

Säkringsredovisning : Redovisningsmässiga och skattemässiga konsekvenser / Hedge Accounting – Accounting and Tax Implications

Andersson, Elin, Selin, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
International companies are today exposed to several risks regarding their operations. Theserisks are related to exchange rates, interests rates and commodity prices. In order to reducethese risks companies use financial instruments. Financial instruments are today treated in theInternational Accounting Standard IAS 39 Financial Instruments: Recognition andMeasurement. When financial instruments are used for hedging purposes they are titledhedging instruments, whose changes in value are expected to develop in the opposite directionin relation to the hedged item. In order to achieve a match between these components in thefinancial statements hedge accounting is used. Hedge accounting is treated in IAS 39 andsince this standard was first introduced it has been criticized for being too complex anddifficult to apply in practise. The complexity can be traced to the options the standard offers. In addition to this, hedge accounting is optional and can also be interrupted. The purpose of this study is to examine in what way the application of current accountingrules and Swedish tax rules regarding hedge accounting affect companies, the Swedishgovernment and shareholders. Furthermore, we intend to examine the consequences that ariseas a result of applying hedge accounting in practice. The study is qualitative in nature andcontains three scenarios designed to show how selected stakeholders are affected by thecurrent regulations. The study will also show the accounting and tax implications that mayarise when hedge accounting is applied. The study shows that the criticism levelled against IAS 39 are eligible. When taxation ofhedging arrangements is taken into consideration a new dimension of complexity arises. Thiscan be explained by the fact that Swedish tax rules and IFRS standards do not advocate thesame valuation of financial instruments. Although RFR 2 is applied in order to reduce thesedifferences, the fact remains that hedge accounting is not functioning optimally for nonfinancialcompanies. This study also shows that the options hedge accounting offers havemore or less impact on the stakeholders of the entity. Corporate decisions on whether hedgeaccounting should be applied or not do affect the financial reports of the company, which inextension may influence stakeholders´ investment decisions. The options regarding hedgeaccounting also influence corporate taxation, as they may give rise to arbitrage situations aswell as reduced or more irregular tax payments. The conclusion of this study is that the accounting and tax treatment of financial instrumentsis too complex and current regulations should therefore be reviewed in order to achieve abetter match between these two components. This paper is hereinafter written in Swedish.
