Tiga är guld? Hur opinionsbildning kan påverka gentrifiering : En fallstudie av Crown Heights i Brooklyn, New York

Livas, Johan January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to study the potential discourse has to alter the way that gentrification transforms neighbourhoods. In order to gather the knowledge necessary to answer that question this study has focused its attention on Crown Heights, a neighbourhood in Brooklyn, New York. It explores how resistance in the form of urban social movements were a factor in the Bedford Union Armory project, where several protests and discourse used over social media had arguably a large role in changing the scope of that project to be more inclusive and attend in a greater way to the needs of the local residents. The second focal point of this paper is to study the discourse used by local newspapers when articles are written about gentrification in Crown Heights. It aims to highlight the difference in the language used by employing a critical discourse analysis where the metaphors and the transitivity used by the authors is studied. The differences between the articles can in some places be regarded as quite stark, where that specific discourse is most likely used to reinforce their own world view.

The corpus of this research is Wuthering Heights, the only novel written by the English writer Emily Brontë that since its first publication in 1847 has generated contradictory reactions that oscillate between fascination and repulsion among readers. We analyse some peculiar aspects of this work, emphasizing among them, its mode of narration that combines frightening aspects of Gothic novel with elements of realistic aesthetics of the nineteenth century. They are also objects of this study, which we call "Gothic spatiality" that stands out in the description of its main scenario - Wuthering Heights, the old and sinister house that provides the title of the novel -, and the themes and motifs of the Gothic genre that were reviewed by Emily Brontë, such as the double, which is widely exploited in texts with Gothic inspiration, such as Manfred, dramatic poem of Byron. Finally we analyse the couple of protagonists in the novel, Catherine and Heathcliff, seeking to appoint an intertextual dialogue between Brontë’s book with works of Gothic genre or inserted in the English literary tradition, such as Paradise Lost, by John Milton. / FAPESP: 2012/08393-9

Morfogênese e características estruturais dos capins Andropógon e Xaraés submetidos a três alturas de corte / Morphogenesis and structural characteristics of Andropógon grass and Xaraés palisade grass submitted to three cutting heights

Sousa, Braulio Maia de Lana 02 1900 (has links)
O manejo adequado da desfolhação dos capins Andropógon e Xaraés seria corte aos 50 e 30 cm de altura do dossel durante a rebrotação a uma altura de 27 a 34 cm e 15 a 20 cm, respectivamente._________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate morphogenetic and structural characteristics of Andropogon gayanus cv. Planaltina and Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés submitted to three cutting heights when the sward reached 95 % of light interception during the regrowth time. The experiment was carried out at Animal Science Department at UFV, in Viçosa/MG, from November 2007 to November 2008, and it was allocated in a completed randomised block design with three replications, in a total of nine experimental units. The evaluations of Andropógon grass started in November 2007 and finished in November 2008, and its treatment corresponded to three cutting heights 20, 27 and 34 cm. Concerning Xaraés palisade grass, its evaluation time happened between January 2008 and November 2008, and its cutting heights were15, 20 and 25 cm. The height of the pasture in the pre-cut time presented itself stable, and its values were about 50 and 30 cm for Andropógon grass and Xaraés palisade grass respectively. It revealed itself as a good practical and efficient parameter in order to manage the defoliation of these forage plants, since the height is highly related to 95% of light interception. The highest cuts resulted in the lowest angle and the lowest foliage area, so the grasses intercepted more light right after the defoliation time, which possibly promoted faster regrowths in shorter cut intervals. However, independently of the evaluated forage specie, there was no difference in the foliage area index between the treatments or the evaluation times, which was a reflex of fast plastic responses involving adjustments in the structural and morphogenetic characteristics of the plants. The Andropógon grass reduced its final leaf lamina length (FLLL), leaf appearance rate (LAR), number of live leaves (NLL), leaf lifespan (LL), stem elongation rate (SER), and tiller density (TD). When this grass was submitted to the lowest cuts, it elevated the phyllochron and the leaf senescence rate (LSR). Because of Andropógon grass typical blossom time in the fall, it was observed an elevation in the values of SER and LAR in this season. In addition, it was registered the highest NLL and the lowest values for the length of leaf lamina and LS. On the other hand, Xaraés palisade grass presented an increase in the leaf elongation rate (LER) and in the NLL, and a decrease in the values of SER and of the TD when this grass was submitted to the lowest cuts. The fall presented the lowest values of TAIF and of length of leaf lamina, and the highest values of NLL, LL, leaf senescence rate (LSR), and TD. The adequate management of the defoliation in the Andropógon grass and Xaraés palisade grass would be the cutting heights of 50 and 30 cm of tiller during the regrowth time in the heights from 27 to 34 cm and from 15 to 20 cm respectively.

Statistics of extremes with applications to extreme flood heights in the Lower Limpopo River Basin of Mozambique

Maposa, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D. (Statistics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016. / Statistics of extremes has seen much growth both in theory and application since its early theoretical developments almost a century ago in the 1920s and its first major applications to real-life problems pioneered by Emil Gumbel in the early 1940s. Although the theory and applications of extreme value theory (EVT) have been extensively advanced and utilised in most developed countries, intermsofapplicationslittlehasbeendoneinmanydevelopingcountries in Africa despite the abundance of areas of applications and raw data in some ofthesecountries. Inhydrology, thechoiceoffloodfrequencyprobabilitydistributions for a particular site or region remains the subject of ongoing research. The work contained in this thesis is a contribution towards this area and it addresses this problem in one of the developing and economically challenged countries in Africa, Mozambique, in the lower Limpopo River basin (LLRB). The LLRB is a basin characterised by extreme natural hazards, alternating between extreme floods and severe droughts. ThisthesisisbasedonanextensiveapplicationofEVTtoextremefloodheights data in the LLRB of Mozambique at three sites: Chokwe, Combomune and Sicacate hydrometric stations. Two fundamental approaches of EVT, block maxima and peaks-over-threshold (POT), are used in this thesis. Recent theoretical results by Ferreira and de Haan (2015) have shown that despite its inefficiency due to data lost as a result of blocking, the block maxima approach is more efficient in a number of situations than the POT approach, and the two approaches are quite comparable for large sample sizes. A number of ii candidate distributions are investigated for their goodness-of-fit to the annual daily maximum flood heights in a block maxima realisation at each site. The findings reveal that the GEV distribution is the most appropriate distribution to apply in the LLRB and the distribution can be recommended as the likelihood function for regional and spatial extremes flood frequency analysis in the basin. The thesis addresses the issue of cumulative effects on daily flood heights through a comparative analysis of six annual maxima moving sums. The findings demonstrate that the six annual maxima time series models are notsignificantlydifferentbasedonthecharacteristicsconsideredinthisthesis. In an attempt to reduce uncertainties in the estimates, a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach with a conjugate prior and a GEV likelihood function is used to model the tails of the extreme flood heights in the basin. The findings reveal that the addition of prior information in Bayesian MCMC substantially reduces uncertainties in the estimates and improves precision in the predicted extreme floods. The r largest order statistics models developed in this thesis are generally promising and the standard errors of the estimates of the parameters are substantially reduced. In order to account for climate change impact, nonstationary models are considered with the longterm trend and seasonal oscillation index (SOI) (a meteorological variable indicator) as covariates of the parameters of the GEV distribution and the generalised Pareto distribution (GPD). Among the major contributions of this thesis is a proposed procedure for the determination of the 8 days window period used in extracting independent r largest order values within the same year for the r largest order statistics approach. A summary of the key findings and contributions of this thesis are given in Chapter 9. Moreover, contributions by the study topic in each chapter are given at the end of each chapter. / DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoEMaSS) of South Africa

Representations of gender in Wuthering Heights : An analysis of Masculinity and femininity and women as the abject

Vindelhag, Saga January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to analyse gender representations in Wuthering Heights byusing French literary criticism. French literary critics thought that the language ofliterature was predominantly phallocentric as male authors, who helped shape thatlanguage, dominated it. For female authors to be published, or have any kind ofrecognition for their work, they would therefore use male pseudonyms, as was the casewith Emily Brontë who was initially published as Ellis Bell. Hélène Cixous added to theliterary criticism by noting that the constructed language at the time depended on binaryoppositions such as, passive/active, weak/strong, and intuitive/theoretical, amongstothers. She suggested that these oppositions were applied to represent femininity andmasculinity where feminine attributes were negative and the masculine attributes beingpositive. In effect, the characters in literature having feminine attributes, although somebelonging to the male gender, would automatically mark them as the weaker sex and putthem in the negative category. This, she suggested, determined the outcome from theonset, as those characteristics that was deemed negative would eventually be eliminated,as the binary opposition were not able to co-exist. Kristeva who has theorised the notionof “abject” in her thesis Power of Horror, describes abject as something foul andgrotesque which is always applied to the feminine maternal figure, that also gives creditto Cixous’s theory about the feminine being seen as the negative.

Negotiating Discourses on Homoeroticism: The Coming Out and Other Tales by Colombian Immigrant Men in New York City

Marquez, Erika 01 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This work analyzes the ways in which transnational migration transforms and is transformed by the sexual dimensions of identity. It presents the experience of Colombian homosexual men who have migrated to New York City in the last twenty-five years as a case that illuminates identity transformations in the process of transnational migration. Throughout ethnographic research, this work finds that immigration greatly impacts family arrangements and patterns of inclusion and exclusion in the immigrant's original and recipient society.
