Gospel missionism (1892-1910) and the Southern Baptist Convention (USA) : prelude to a post-modern missiology

Assessment of the past helps one seize emerging opportunities. The Southern Baptist Convention's (SBC) Foreign Mission Board (FMB) radically redesigned itself July 1, 1997, the most far reaching self-assessment since its 1845 founding. The FMB's changes neglected some essential historical precedents. In 1892, a band of FMB missionaries posted with the North China Mission resigned and established their own operation. They held and integrated three core values: indigeneity, incarnation, and responsible autonomy. Baptist historians have dismissed these dissidents because they considered them Landmarkers (an earlier movement that threatened the SBC itself). Later historical inquiry corrected this assumption demonstrating that Landmarkers seized the Gospel Mission Movement to serve its own ends not the reverse. What prorrpted these missionaries to leave their base of support and operate independently? Original sources tell the tale of strong convictions about missions that were more commonly apparent later, in a post-modern era. Gospel Missionism's peers did not listen, partly because of the Landmarkist confusion and partly because they advocated things others were not prepared to hear. The Gospel Missioners found it difficult to sustain their experiment outside the SBC. Hence, survivors gradually reentered the FMB structure, primarily the Interior China Mission. Their influence extended to the next generation of missionaries. Yet, indirectly their values entered the FMB's strategies through outside evangelicals which increasingly espoused similar core values. By 1985, the Board tackled the challenge of the least evangelized peoples. Trustees formed Cooperative Services International (CSI) to accommodate the need. Unwittingly, from within the FMB, CSI embodied Gospel Missionism's core values with more modern emphases. In 1997, trustees restructured the FMB and dismantled CSI. They borrowed its drive and its penchant for streamlined administration, but jettisoned its priority passion for those least evangelized. Only time will tell, but there is evidence that the FMB has reverted and embraced elements of an older paradigm, possibly because it was unprepared to face a postmodern future. This study concludes that the Gospel Missionism movement was a blending of both enlightenment and post-modern missiological ideals. Exploring genetic diversity in natural and domestic populations through next generation sequencing

Studying genetic diversity in natural and domestic populations is of major importance in evolutionary biology. The recent advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has dramatically changed the scope of these studies, enabling researchers to study genetic diversity in a whole-genome context. This thesis details examples of studies using NGS data to: (i) characterize evolutionary forces shaping the genome of the Atlantic herring, (ii) detect the genetic basis of speciation and domestication in the rabbit, and, (iii) identify mutations associated with skeletal atavism in Shetland ponies. The Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) is the most abundant teleost species inhabiting the North Atlantic. Herring has seasonal reproduction and is adapted to a wide range of salinity (3-35‰) throughout the Baltic Sea and Atlantic Ocean. By using NGS data and whole-genome screening of 20 populations, we revealed the underlying genetic architecture for both adaptive features. Our results demonstrated that differentiated genomic regions have evolved by natural selection and genetic drift has played a subordinate role. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is native to the Iberian Peninsula, where two rabbit subspecies with partial reproductive isolation have evolved. We performed whole genome sequencing to characterize regions of reduced introgression. Our results suggest key role of gene regulation in triggering genetic incompatibilities in the early stages of reproductive isolation. Moreover, we studied gene expression in testis and found misregulation of many genes in backcross progenies that often show impaired male fertility. We also scanned whole genome of wild and domestic populations and identified differentiated regions that were enriched for non-coding conserved elements. Our results indicated that selection has acted on standing genetic variation, particularly targeting genes expressed in the central nervous system. This finding is consistent with the tame behavior present in domestic rabbits, which allows them to survive and reproduce under the stressful non-natural rearing conditions provided by humans. In Shetland ponies, abnormally developed ulnae and fibulae characterize a skeletal deformity known as skeletal atavism. To explore the genetic basis of this disease, we scanned the genome using whole genome resequencing data. We identified two partially overlapping large deletions in the pseudoautosomal region (PAR) of the sex chromosomes that remove the entire coding sequence of the SHOX gene and part of CRLF2 gene. Based on this finding, we developed a diagnostic test that can be used as a tool to eradicate this inherited disease in horses.

Treatment of the Leading Soprano Roles in Selected Operas of Benjamin Britten: Peter Grimes, The Rape of Lucretia, Albert Herring, and Gloriana

Benjamin Britten is one of the foremost contemporary English composers. He has successfully revived English opera, dead since Purcell, and this is one of his most significant contributions to the contemporary music world. Therefore, the purpose of this document is to give the reader some insight into Britten' s operatic style. The first chapter contains a sketch of Britten's life with particular reference to his operas, along with general characteristics of his writing. The following chapter has been devoted to a closer consideration of four of his2 operas: Peter Grimes, ;Theof. Lueretia, Albert Herring, and Gloriana. Since an analysis of entire operas would exceed the limitations of this paper, the soprano role has been selected as representative of Britten's operatic style. The vocal score of Turn of the Screw was not available for this study, and his other operas do not contain soprano roles. With each analysis a brief synopsis of the plot is included as a background for the musical analysis. Following the plot is a general treatment of the outstanding style features of the role. In order to present another facet of Britten's writing, the specific analysis of each soprano role is handled from a thematic standpoint. That is, the role is scrutinized for important recurring motives, the significance of these motives is noted, and examination made of their relationship to the opera as a. whole. Reti's Thematic Process in Mlusic has proved an invaluable guide to this type of analysis.

Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web

The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. Moderate differences in temperature and salinity affected α-tocopherol, β-carotene and thiamine production in microalgae. Furthermore, the results suggest that acute stress favors the expression of non-enzymatic antioxidants rather than enzymatic antioxidants. Because production of α-tocopherol, β-carotene and thiamine differ markedly between microalgae, the availability of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine is likely to be highly variable in the Baltic Sea and is difficult to predict. The transfer of non-enzymatic antioxidants from phytoplankton to zooplankton was biomass dependent. The field expeditions revealed that phytoplankton biomass was negatively associated with α-tocopherol concentration in mesozooplankton. Thus, increased eutrophication of the Baltic Sea followed by an increase in phytoplankton biomass could decrease the transfer of essential biochemicals to higher levels in the pelagic food web. This could lead to deficiency syndromes, of the kind already observed in the Baltic Sea. Astaxanthin is synthesized from precursors provided by the phytoplankton community. Thus biomass dependent transfer of astaxanthin precursors from phytoplankton to zooplankton could be responsible for astaxanthin deficiency in zooplanktivorous herring. Astaxanthin in herring consists mostly of all-Z-isomers, which are characterized by low bioavailability. Therefore, astaxanthin deficiency in salmon could be explained by the low concentration of this substance and its isomeric composition in herring.

In recent years, gull control has become closely tied to seabird restoration in the Gulf of Maine. Herring (Larus argentatus ) and Great Black-backed (L. marinus) gulls are the principal targets of control, yet anecdotal reports suggest that gull predation remains an important source of egg and chick mortality at many managed seabird colonies. The main objective of this study was to examine the impact of gull predation on the reproductive success of several waterbird species nesting at restoration sites in Maine. Particular emphasis was placed on understanding gull foraging behavior, identifying foraging constraints, and applying this knowledge to management of gulls and small seabirds. / Productivity of Common (Sterna hirundo), Arctic ( S. paradisaea), and Roseate (S. dougallii) terns was monitored and daily predation watches were conducted at Eastern Egg Rock, Maine from 2003-2005. In 2004 and 2005 only, attempts were made to shoot gulls preying on terns. Shooting failed to eliminate predation, and tern predation risk was influenced by nest location, but not year. Common and Arctic terns experienced heavy predation in all years, but Roseate Tern nests were seldom depredated, presumably because Roseates selected nest-sites with more cover. Great Black-backed Gull predation was influenced by visibility, tidal state, and year, while Herring Gull predation depended only on the stage of the tern breeding cycle. There was little evidence that gulls preyed selectively on unfit chicks. The limitations of shooting are discussed and non-lethal alternatives suggested. / Common Eider (Somateria mollissima dresseri) nest (hatching) success, habitat use, and duckling survival were studied at Stratton Island, Maine in 2004-2005. Eiders nested in a variety of habitats offering vegetative cover and enjoyed high nest success. Duckling survival was negligible however, because of opportunistic, group attacks by Great Black-backed Gulls. Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) also appeared to suffer heavy gull predation, with adults occasionally attacked in flight. In 2006, gull displacement walks, gull nest/egg destruction, and occasional shooting were used on a trial basis and may enhance future eider production.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / A sardinha-bandeira, Opisthonema oglinum, pertence à famÃlia Clupeidae da ordem Clupeiformes sendo uma das cinco espÃcies do gÃnero Opisthonema. No Estado do Cearà sua captura se estende ao longo de toda a costa, durante todo o ano, com as melhores pescarias ocorrendo entre maio e dezembro. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a estrutura da populaÃÃo, a relaÃÃo peso/comprimento da sardinha-bandeira e a seletividade das redes-de-espera utilizadas na sua captura na Praia da Caponga, municÃpio de Cascavel, CearÃ, Brasil. Os dados de comprimento total (cm) e peso individual (g) foram obtidos de dois grupos, cada um com 780 indivÃduos, capturados por redes-de-espera com malhas de 5 cm e 6 cm entre nÃs opostos, no perÃodo de agosto a outubro de 2014. Esses dados foram descritos em histogramas de frequÃncia de comprimento e peso, sendo mais representativas as classes de 21,6 cm (24,23%) e de 87,0 g (32,31%) para a malha de 5 cm e de 25,7 cm (23,08%) e de 117,9 g (26,03%), para a de 6 cm. Quando todos os indivÃduos foram reunidos em um Ãnico grupo (1.560), sem distinÃÃo do tamanho da malha, as classes mais representativas foram a de 23,0 cm de comprimento (18,59%) e a de 105,5 g de peso (20,38%). As equaÃÃes que representaram as relaÃÃes peso/comprimento foram as seguintes: y=0,016 x^2,7636 (780 indivÃduos capturados com a malha de 5 cm); y=0,031 x^2,5635 (780 indivÃduos capturados com a malha de 6 cm); e y=0,021 x^2,6828 (1.560 indivÃduos). Para o estudo da seletividade foram analisados todos os exemplares de sardinha-bandeira (1.560) capturados com as redes-de-espera de malha de 5 cm e 6 cm. O comprimento mÃdio de seleÃÃo foi de 23,7 cm para a malha de 5 cm e de 28,5 cm para a de 6 cm. A amplitude de seleÃÃo foi de 23,7  7,9 cm e de 28,5  7,9 cm para as malhas de 5 cm e 6 cm, respectivamente. As equaÃÃes das curvas de seleÃÃo das redes-de-espera para os dois tamanhos de malha foram obtidas, e a probabilidade de capturar indivÃduos com comprimento inferior ao mÃnimo, estabelecido em 15 cm, foi muito baixa e correspondeu a 1,32% e 0,03% para as malhas de 5 cm e de 6 cm, respectivamente. Esta informaÃÃo à de grande valia para a manutenÃÃo do estoque da sardinha-bandeira capturada na Praia da Caponga, CearÃ. / Atlantic thread-herring, Opisthonema oglinum, belongs to the family Clupeidae and to the order Clupeiformes. It is one of the five species of the genus Opisthonema. In the state of CearÃ, it is caught along the entire coast, throughout the year, with the best fisheries occurring between May and December. This work aimed to study the population structure, the length/weight relationships of the Atlantic thread-herring and to determine gear selectivity of drift nets used for catching them in Caponga Beach, Cascavel, CearÃ, Brazil. Data of total length (cm) and individual weight (g) were obtained from two groups, each with 780 individuals captured by drift nets with meshes of 5 cm and 6 cm, from August to October 2014. These data are showed as histograms. The most representative classes of length and weight were 21.6 cm (24.23%) and 87.0 g (32.31%) for 5 cm mesh, while for the 6 cm mesh, the main classes were 25.7 cm (23.08%) and 117.9 g (26.03%). When all data was combined into a single group (1,560), without the mesh size distinction, the most representative classes were 23.0 cm long (18.59%) and 105.5 g in weight (20.38%). The equations representing the weight/length ratios were as follows: y=0.016 x^2.7636 (780 individuals captured with a mesh of 5 cm); y=0.031 x^2.5635 (780 individuals caught with a mesh of 6 cm); and y=0.021 x^2.6828 (1,560 individuals). To study the selectivity, 1,560 Atlantic thread-herring specimens captured with drift nets of 5 cm and 6 cm were analyzed. The selection mean length was 23.7 cm for 5 cm mesh and 28.5 cm for 6 cm mesh. The range of selection was 23.7  7.9 cm and 28.5  7.9 cm for 5 cm mesh and 6 cm mesh, respectively. The equations of the selection curves for the two mesh sizes were obtained, and the probability of capturing individuals with length less than the established minimum of 15 cm was very low, amounting to 1.32% and 0.03% for the meshes of 5 cm and 6 cm, respectively. This information is of great value to maintain the stock of Atlantic thread-herring in Caponga Beach, CearÃ.

Title: The reflection kinesiology analyse of cross country skiing Purposes: To compare coordination of chosen muscles on leg during reflection of cross country skiing classic technique, skating and herringbone. Methods: Comparative analysis: the dates were measured by surface electromyography and 2-D video-analysis. Results: We founded statistical significance by comparisons muscle activation on right leg during kick during cross country skiing: classic technique, diagonal stride and herringbone and V-1 skating and herringbone. In case the left leg the statistical significance was disprove by: m. peroneus longus sin during comparison of diagonal stride and herringbone and m. gastrocnemius medialis sin V-1 skating and herringbone. We founded high level of laterality of diagonal stride and herringbone. In case V-1 skating, the significant similarity was not founded for m. vastus lateralis and m. gluteus medialis.
