A sociolinguistic analysis of participants co-constructing the learning context in a graduate-level seminarRearick, Mary Louise Waite 01 January 1992 (has links)
This dissertation describes and analyzes how participants in one gender-informed graduate-level seminar socialized each other through joint construction of the learning environment and the learning. The research was conducted in two phases. First an ethnographic approach was used for collecting data over the course of the year in a graduate-level women's history seminar. Using ethnographic methods, I worked out an analysis of the learning environment--in particular the expectations of the professor, the motivations of participants, subject matter, and organization of space and activities. The second phase of the research used sociolinguistic methodology to arrive at an analysis of how the participants co-constructed the learning in a gender-informed collaborative classroom. Reviews of research on gender and graduate-level teaching and learning, constructivist and social constructivist learning theory, and learning processes in gender-informed classrooms formed the theoretical framework for the dissertation. Particularly relevant were studies which examined gender-balancing processes and constructivist perspectives in graduate-level learning. The study contributes to our understanding of how participants in a gender-informed seminar socialized each other and jointly constructed meanings. When the professor provided gender-informed subject matter to men and women who were willing to learn, then men and women became more conscious of the workings of gender in their own lives. In addition, the social context in the classroom became more supportive across gender lines. Through discussions alone, consciousness can be raised, but it is through collaborative work and group dialogue on individual projects that new understandings are integrated and demonstrated in written work and in social behavior.

Analysis of information literacy training at the National University of LesothoLefalatsa, Limakatso January 2018 (has links)
Information literacy skills are a necessity among university students, hence information literacy instructors should keep abreast with the 21st century information literacy curriculum, its delivery and assessment. The study investigated information literacy training and its needs at NUL. The purpose was to investigate information literacy curriculum, delivery and assessment at the National University of Lesotho. Guided by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) information literacy framework for higher education, the study sought to establish the extent to which the NUL information literacy programme considers ACRL frames or any other standard of relevance. The study adopted a qualitative approach using a phenomenology research design. Data was collected from NUL Subject Librarians through focus group discussions and one on one interview with the Lecturers. Data was generated from structured interview questions; analysed manually and presented in an interpretative form such that participants’ responses were tabulated under subheadings corresponding to the items from the research instruments that were formulated from the research questions. Major findings are that there is no information literacy programme in place hence there is no specific curriculum at NUL, as a result there is also no benchmarking. NUL Subject Librarians take initiative to improvise information literacy content; they use lecture mode and library tours as their predominant mode of information literacy teaching and learning. Although there is a Communication Skills Course meant to assist students with information and communication skills, students struggle to search for information; they are even unable to consult a variety of information sources. The study therefore recommends NUL Library to establish a clear information literacy training programme that is delivered in collaboration with academic staff. It is further recommended that Subject Librarians should contribute to the content of the Communication Skills Course.

Embedding sustainability into practice : redesigning management accounting curriculum in higher educationRasnick, Deborah Laura 02 July 2013 (has links)
This study explores how higher education can enable the management accounting curriculum to include sustainability content and learning outcomes to encourage future accountants and leaders to use such information in organizational decision-making. It examines current systems thinking theories, and studies how the leverage points available through the management accounting function may assist organizations to embed sustainability into daily practice. To support this transformation, the research reviews the knowledge-base, activities, and tools of management accounting and suggests how to incorporate sustainability principles and criteria into the curriculum within a community college in British Columbia (BC) that has established sustainability as a strategic goal. Action research interviews explore how the management accounting curriculum within the school of business could be enhanced to support organizations - and by extension society - in embedding sustainability into practice, and identifies recommendations for curriculum re-design at the department level, and key elements of change-making to enable it.

Multiculturalism in United States Higher Education Institutions: The Lived Experiences of Enrolled International StudentsRagsdell, Loretta Arian 01 January 2016 (has links)
Since 2006, international student enrollment in U.S. higher education institutions has increased significantly, which has precipitated an increase in the institutions' multiculturalism. A mechanism to facilitate the integration of students of different cultures within a multicultural institution would be valuable to fostering positive educational experiences for all students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was the inclusion of multiculturalism within U.S. higher education institutions. Banks' multiculturalism theory provided the study's conceptual framework. Six international students were interviewed, and their responses were analyzed to answer 2 research questions concerning the lived experiences of international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions and the inclusion of multiculturalism in the institution's curriculum, programs, policies, and practices and regarding their institutions' efforts to assist them in adjusting to and integrating. Data were analyzed to identify the emerging themes. According to the study's findings, multiculturalism was included in most of the participants' higher education institutions; however, the students felt their expectations had not been met, and that the institutions could have done more to assist them with cultural and social integration and navigation through the institutions' educational systems. The findings of this study create an opportunity for social change by informing U.S. higher education institutions on the ways to enhance programs, service, and curriculum to best meet the needs of enrolled international students.

Previous issue date: 2017-12-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research aimed to contribute to the discussions about the processes of Curricular Innovation in Higher Education. In order to do so, the Humanistic and Cultural Interactions (ICH) were used as an object of research, as they are a curricular component proposed by the Federal University of Paraná Coast Sector (UFPR Litoral). The pedagogical activities resulting from the ICH assume fundamental objectives for the accomplishment of the Political Pedagogical Project (PPP), conducted by the UFPR Litoral. There was a try to evidence, from observation, analysis and discussion about the praxis of the protagonists of the pedagogical arrangements, how these curricular acts of ICH contribute or can contribute even more to the development of the institution's PPP. Among the specific objectives there was a search for strategies to stimulate: the expansion of the pedagogical instruments for the action in this innovative curriculum; the rescue of the collective instances of discussion and pedagogical evaluation of UFPR Litoral; the strengthening of personal and conceptual relationships between project participants; the cultural interaction of subjects and their identities in permanent exercise; and the feeling of belonging to the collective constructor of an innovative project in constant movement. It was used the discourses of the curricular actors (teachers, students, technical-administrative and extra-academic community) and their different interpretations, idealizations, practices, doubts, fears, criticisms and everything that they were able to subjectivize from their experiences in the component of ICH. The discourses were obtained through online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed by Discursive Textual Analysis. What appears as a result of these analyzes is that there are important aspects about the ICH curricular axis that are demanding for pedagogical discussions. Among them, some arise as a consequence of curricular praxis and others arise as questionings, possibly resulting from conflicts between the curriculum and the General Principles of Curriculum. Irrespective of all the processes that have resulted in recent obstacles in the UFPR Litoral curricular discussions, the rehabilitation of these discussions and pedagogical formations as well as the exchange of lived experiences in the possible pedagogical arrangements existing in the ICH are necessary as an act of institutional continuity / Esta pesquisa teve como propósito contribuir com as discussões acerca dos processos de Inovação Curricular no Ensino Superior.

Tramas da tessitura curricular: o curso experimental de medicina da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (1968-1975) / Tissue weft from curriculum: the experimental course of medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (1968-1975)Tavano, Patricia Teixeira 25 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to understand the joining processes and selections that weave the proposition, implementation and termination of Curso Experimental de Medicina (CEM) (Experimental Medicine Course). This Course was offered by Faculdade de Medicina da USP (Medicine School at USP) from 1968-1975, at a unique condition, since it did not replace the old curriculum, but was offered at the same time by the School. To mark the distinction, the old curriculum was named as Traditional Medicine Course that maintained the training philosophy based on the biomedical paradigm, hospital-centric and specializer, both of philosophies questioned by the CEM which is based on general training, preventivist, community-centered, with diversification of practical scenarios and professional insertion. This research was based on a concept of curriculum as a construct, a disputed territory, an artifact made from social, cultural and historical backgrounds, looking to articulate the conceptual proposition of CEM with social and political expectations of medical formation featuring individual and group protagonisms forming the course curriculum; to understand and analyze the construction/deconstruction of the experimental curriculum in opposition/juxtaposition/disposal of the curriculum traditional territory; to discuss the assumptions of the CEMs closure seeking to identify possible stays/contaminations to the Traditional curriculum. To this end, we seek to articulate written and oral documents, base to this research, with the references about the understanding of curriculum. The written documents were selected from different sources and collections (Historic Museum \"Professor Carlos da Silva Lacaz\" and FMUSP Academic and technical assistance; newspapers O Estado de Sao Paulo and Folha de São Paulo) and by an online form, with wide participation of former students of both courses. Oral documents are semi-structured interviews carried out with former teachers and students. Experimental Course of Medicine (CEM) ended in 1975 without a comparative assessment with your traditional counterpoint, and left as inheritance in the curricular structure of Faculdade de Medicina the primary health attention at Health Center-School of Butantã and integration of Infectious Diseases curriculum.

Virtual. International. Job orientated. – Best practice on how virtual collaboration courses can succeedNenner, Christin, Bergert, Aline, Naa Amlah Böhnisch, Angelina 06 June 2018 (has links)
From April to June 2016 a new and exclusively virtual teaching format – the international STEM1 Summer School – was provided at the University of Mining and Technology in Freiberg. The paper presents the approach, didactical design, and results of evaluation.
The international STEM Summer School was developed and tested within the project „Holistic International STEMs - Learning with case studies and real-life industry experiences“. The aim was to better prepare STEM students for challenges in the current professional world that are characterized by in-ternationalization and digitalization. The project offers some ideas on how to teach the currently re-quired skills and competencies by industry in higher education. The conceptualization of the project was made possible with funding from the Donors\' Association for the Promotion of Humanities and Sciences in Germany2.
The exclusively virtual collaboration is due to the different geographical distances and locations of the participating students, which generates specific challenges. On the one hand, technical conditions at the particular places of residence have an impact on virtual collaboration. On the other hand, cultural, lingual, and occupational differences, as well as the differing media literacy, play an important role. In addition, the setting of objectives and provision of incentives is decisive for the shared virtual work. The results of the first round of the international STEM Summer School indicate possible solution strategies based on the three areas of media use, interaction, and task orientation.
During the Summer School, students from ten different countries solved real-life job case studies in small interdisciplinary teams. The exchange took place with the help of various e-learning tools like the virtual classroom, wiki, forum and e-portfolio. The participants were mentored by national and international industry partners, STEM professors, and e-tutors. After nine weeks work in intercultural teams they presented their results and learning outcomes during a web conference.
The following article focusses on the evaluation results as well as selected insights and challenges.
