Determinación de la Diversidad Genética de 172 accesiones de la colección nacional de Chenopodium quinoa Willd. “QUINUA” mediante marcadores microsatélites

Vía y Rada Fernández, Romina Noelia January 2015 (has links)
Chenopodium quinoa “quinoa” has a high genetic potential to contribute to food security in developing countries, therefore it is in a valorization process. However, the growing demand has focused his interest in the cultivation of commercial varieties, neglecting the native varieties of the Andean region, which could lead to loss of diversity. Therefore, it is necessary the research of native ecotypes and its conservation in genebanks in order to describe the genetic diversity also elucidate the structure of the population of quinoa in our country and publicize the value of its germplasm. In this study the genetic diversity andean valleys and highland quinoa ecotypes was determined by genotyping 23 microsatellite markers using a PCR-Multiplex system. A total of 294 alleles were detected with an average of 12.78 alleles per locus, where the valleys ecotypes showed a greater number of private alleles (60 alleles), i.e. a higher allelic richness. In addition, using PCoA, two subpopulations of quinoa with moderate genetic differentiation (Fst = 0.059) were observed which were related to the origin of the samples. Finally, 10 highly polymorphic loci were identified, which will allow the evaluation of the genetic diversity of quinoa germplasm.

O complexo Tupi da Amazônia Oriental / The Eastern Amazonic Tupi complex

Almeida, Fernando Ozorio de 25 March 2008 (has links)
The main aim of this study is the analysis of the ceramic material from the Cavalo Branco site, a highland Tupi site, located in the Amazon periphery, near the Tocantins River. Comparing the results obtained from this material with those from other nearby sites it was possible to make inferences about several aspects of the eastern Amazonic Tupi. The archaeological, ethno-historic, and ethnographic data indicated a singular characterization for these "new" Tupi, such as aspects related to the ceramics, settlement patterns and village morphology. The results suggested a differential for these groups, which cannot be related to the Guarani or the Tupinambá sub-tradition.

The roles of cultural values in landscape management : valuing the 'more-than-visual' in Highland Scotland

Holden, Amy Elizabeth January 2016 (has links)
There have been calls within landscape (and broader environmental) policy for the greater incorporation of cultural values and stakeholder participation. This, however, has often been critiqued within the academic literature as being difficult to achieve in practice. Concurrently, academic research around ‘landscape’ has seen an emergence of exploring more embodied, experiential and ‘more-than-visual’ ways of knowing, challenging the more traditional concept of ‘landscape’ as a ‘way of seeing’ and a cultural product. This research explored the multiple ways that people value landscapes using walking interviews, arts-based methods and key-informant interviews (with local and national landscape managers). It explored the potential of visual and ‘more-than-visual’ methods to both engage and articulate with more subjective, emotional and embodied encounters with landscapes. This was then used to explore the potential and challenges of adopting cultural and more participative approaches to landscape management. After an initial analysis of the data gathered through the methods, this was then used as part of feedback events within the two case study areas to allow the participants of the research and the broader local community to engage with the work. This research argues that ‘landscape’ as a concept, when approached from a ‘more-than-visual’ perspective, highlighted that the inherently visual concept is bound up within a much broader sensory immersion within the landscape. The research demonstrated the complex and interconnected relationship between people and the landscape through the concept of ‘dwelling’ emphasising the lived-in, everyday encounters with landscape. This relationship is tied up within past individual experiences, shared social and cultural history as well as the material landscape itself arguing for a more ‘hybrid’ understanding of people and landscape. Furthermore, the research highlighted both the potential and challenges of participative approaches with multiple landscape stakeholders and challenges the ‘homogenous’ perspective of ‘community’ within management rhetoric. There is an argument for more partnership working between multiple stakeholders to generate trust and dialogue. It argues for the creation of spaces within which the more politically sensitive issues in relation to landscape management can be discussed and the potential for solutions to be created.

Friend or Foe? Martial Race Ideology and the Experience of Highland Scottish and Irish Regiments in Mid-Victorian Conflicts, 1853-1870

Spivey, Adam 01 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines martial race ideology in the British Army during the mid-nineteenth century. A “martial race” was a group of people that the British considered to excel in the art of warfare due to biological and cultural characteristics. This thesis examines perceived “martial” natures or lack thereof of the Highland Scots and the Irish during this era. Central to this analysis are the Crimean War (1853-1856) and the Indian Mutiny of 1857 which provided opportunities for soldiers to display their “martial” qualities. The Crimean War was the first war where the daily newspapers covered every aspect of the war using correspondents, and it gave soldiers the chance to gain recognition through this medium. The Indian Mutiny represented a crisis for Britain, and it gave soldiers the opportunity to be recognized as “stabilizers of the empire.” However, despite their similarities, the Highland regiments became some of the most revered regiments while the Irish came to be seen as untrustworthy, leading many in the British government to initiate efforts to decrease the role that the Irish played in Britain’s conflicts. This reluctance was due to the turmoil that erupted as a result of the anti-Union Fenian Brotherhood in Ireland during the 1860s. The difficulty in stabilizing Ireland in the wake of Fenian terrorist attacks also exposed old prejudices of the Irish related to religion, race, and class. This was evidenced through parliamentary debates and British newspapers reporting on the crises.

Tow, Texas : when the water recedes

Barer, David Edward 13 December 2013 (has links)
As a town reliant on the waters of northern Lake Buchanan, Tow, Texas has been devastated by the state's ongoing drought, which began in 2008. For six years the water has been low. For the past two years, the lake has vanished. Tow locals say the problems stem from both poor water management and natural disaster. Water authorities contend the lakes are functioning properly, that the water has dwindled due to the large number of water users and the harsh and unpredictable Texas climate. Regardless of the cause, the lack of water in Tow has ruined a beautiful lake, destroyed individual livelihoods and crippled a small town's economy. This is the story of several Tow locals' struggle to stay afloat through a drought that could soon become the drought of record. / text
