Doing the dishes was never fun abroad! : Experiences of migrant dishwashers in tourism and hospitality sectorBhatt, Ritesh January 2022 (has links)
This thesis is at the intersection of migration and labour in tourism and the hospitality sector. Empirically, this study explores the experiences of well-trained migrant dishwashing employees (DE) in restaurants in Copenhagen, Denmark and aims to understand their motivation for migration. They, while acquiring hospitality sector experience, struggle beyond the workplace to fulfill their intentions of long term settlement. The study explores how they face resistance to labour market access and participation based on their skills and experience. The focus of this qualitative study is on the highly skilled Green card Holders (GCH) of Denmark, majority of who are stuck as DE in the restaurant industry. This master thesis argues about the challenges of employability, underutilization of foreign education credentials and work-life struggle. A sizable proportion of GCH have managed to find jobs and are working as DE. Qualified professionals like IT specialists, teachers, accountants, and engineers face unanticipated challenges that are explained through open-ended unstructured interviews with GCH. These professionals are still working as DE or have left the Danish labour market. Further, this thesis explores how these DE are struggling to lead the routine life of an expat. I have discussed the significance of job satisfaction as blue- collar employees in the host country and compared it with white-collar job experience from their respective home countries. GCH migrants from Asian countries in Denmark have come under the spotlight during this study. This study provides unique insights from their experience as a DE, exploitation of human capital flight, feelings of humiliation and discrimination of GCH despite being well trained employed back home. Highlighting some of the challenges as a migrant DE, it makes a strong case for reviewing national policy towards them. / <p>2022-01-22</p>

In dieser Arbeit wird die Transmission von hochgeladenen Ionen durch Nanokapillarfolien und makroskopische Glaskapillaren untersucht. Die systematische Analyse des übertragenen Ionenstrahls liefert Informationen zur Physik der Ionentransmission und hier insbesondere zum Einfluss des Anstellwinkels zwischen Kapillarachse und Richtung des einfallenden Ionenstrahls und zum Einfluss der kinetischen Energie des einfallenden Ionenstrahls auf den Transmissionsprozess. Es werden Ionenoptiken aus Nanokapillarfolien und makroskopischen Glaskapillaren konstruiert und deren Eigenschaften zur Ionenstrahlformierung untersucht.
Der durch das Kapillartarget transportierte Ionenstrahl wird durch die Ausfallsrichtung μ, die Divergenz Γ, der Intensität N und des Anteils umgeladener Teilchen charakterisiert. Es wird die Abhängigkeit dieser charakteristischen Eigenschaften von der in die Kapillaren eingetragen Ladung untersucht. Weiterhin erfolgt eine exponentielle Annäherung an die Gleichgewichtswerte mit der Aufladungskonstante ρ. Die Aufladungskonstante wächst mit steigendem Anstellwinkel und steigender kinetischer Energie der einfallenden Teilchen, ist aber für alle oben genannten Eigenschaften des ausfallenden Ionenstrahls gleich.
Erstmalig werden gleichzeitig alle oben genannten Eigenschaften des transportierten Ionenstrahls in Abhängigkeit von der kinetischen Energie der einfallenden Teilchen untersucht. Die Energieabhängigkeit der Eigenschaften des übertragenen Ionenstrahls wird mit einer exponentiellen Annäherung an einen Grenzwert für hohe kinetische Energien beschrieben und durch den Parameter charakterisiert. Dieser ist für alle Eigenschaften des ausfallenden Ionenstrahls im Rahmen des Messfehlers gleich.
Die in dieser Arbeit im Bereich von Ekin. = q · 630 eV bis Ekin. = q · 5600 eV gemessene exponentielle Abhängigkeit des Guiding-Prozesses von der kinetischen Energie unterscheidet sich von der in der Literatur zu findenden Abhängigkeit.
Die Divergenz des ausfallenden Ionenstrahls wird gesondert betrachtet. Die Experimente zeigen eine größere Divergenz des ausfallenden Ionenstrahls in Ablenkrichtung als senkrecht zur Ablenkrichtung. Die Strahldivergenz senkrecht zur Ablenkrichtung steigt im untersuchten Energiebereich mit steigendem Anstellwinkel. In Ablenkrichtung wird in Abhängigkeit von der kinetischen Energie eine unterschiedliche Abhängigkeit der Divergenz vom Anstellwinkel gemessen. Das Verhalten wird unter Berücksichtigung des Guiding-Modells diskutiert.
Untersuchungen hinsichtlich einer möglichen technischen Anwendbarkeit des Guiding-Prozesses führen zu differenzierten Ergebnissen. Die Messungen mittels einer aus einer Nanokapillarfolie geformten Linse zeigen ein geringes technischen Potenzial, da die Fokussierung des einfallenden Strahls durch die Divergenz des ausfallenden Ionenstrahls kompensiert wird. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt die Verwendung einer makroskopischen Glaskapillare ein großes Anwendungspotenzial. Die Ionenstromdichte des einfallenden Ionenstrahls konnte mit einer konischen Glaskapillare um den Faktor 8 erhöht werden. Durch die Realisierung eines Potenzialunterschieds zwischen dem Ein- und Ausgang einer makroskopischen Kapillare wird ein Ionenstrahl innerhalb der Kapillare abgebremst. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Guiding-Effekt die Aufweitung des Ionenstrahls während der Abbremsung effektiv verhindert. Network Coding is a new possibility to transmit data through a network. By combining different packets instead of simply forwarding, network coding offers the opportunity to reach the Min-Cut/Max-Flow capacity in multicast data transmissions. However, the basic schemes are vulnerable to so-called pollution attacks, where an attacker can jam large parts of the transmission by infiltrating only one bogus message. In the literature we found several approaches which aim at handling this kind of attack with different amounts of overhead. Though, the cost for a specific secure network coding scheme highly depends on the underlying network. The goal of this paper is on the one hand to describe which network parameters influence the efficiency of a certain scheme and on the other hand to provide concrete suggestions for selecting the most efficient secure network coding scheme considering a given network. We will illustrate that there does not exist “the best” secure network scheme concerning efficiency, but all selected schemes are more or less suited under certain network topologies.

Probabilistic-Write/Copy-Select (PWCS) is a novel synchronization scheme suggested by Nicholas Mc Guire which avoids expensive atomic operations for synchronizing access to shared objects. Instead, PWCS makes inconsistencies detectable and recoverable. It builds on the assumption that, for typical workloads, the probability for data races is very small. Mc Guire describes PWCS for multiple readers but only one writer of a shared data structure. In this paper, we report on the formal analysis of the PWCS protocol using a continuous-time Markov chain model and probabilistic model checking techniques. Besides the original PWCS protocol, we also considered a variant with multiple writers. The results were obtained by the model checker PRISM and served to identify scenarios in which the use of the PWCS protocol is justified by guarantees on the probability of data races. Moreover, the analysis showed several other quantitative properties of the PWCS protocol.

Title II of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is intended to increase student academic achievement through strategies such as improving teacher quality and increasing the number of "highly qualified teachers" (HQTs) in the classroom. This Federal policy relies on educational research that demonstrates a connection between student achievement and teacher quality. Although NCLB considers each route that teachers may take to meet HQT requirements as equivalent, research demonstrates that some routes may foster higher student achievement than others; those teachers, who met HQT requirements through these routes, are referred to in this study as "research-based HQTs" (RB-HQTs). The quantitative phase of this mixed methodology explores how northern California secondary mathematics teachers in suburban, urban, and rural schools meet "highly qualified teacher" requirements. The subsequent qualitative phase explores the challenges and promising practices in retention and recruitment of RB-HQTs used by those mathematics departments identified as having a "common" or "distinguished" profile of each respective suburban, urban, or rural sub-sample. This study identifies and reports eight strategies used by mathematics departments that have demonstrated success in retention and recruitment of RB-HQTs. The eight identified strategies, when implemented individually or collectively, may increase the proportion of RB-HQTs and improve student academic achievement in each mathematics department across northern California secondary schools, be it suburban, urban, or rural.

As cycling becomes more popular and automated driving is on the rise, it can be assumed that in the city of the future highly automated vehicles (HA Vs) and cyclists will share the same roads. Yet only little is known about how cyclists announce their maneuvers to motorized vehicles or how they communicate and interact with them. Knowledge on these aspects is currently missing to guide the design of cyclist-HA V interactions. Situations where a cyclist rides upfront a vehicle, will be especially challenging for HA Vs, such as when a cyclist (A) avoids an obstacle on the road section ahead, (B) merges onto the road from an ending cycling path, or (C) leaves the road turning into a driveway {see Figure 1) [1 ]. Based on the cyclist's intention, the HA V will have to pass or keep following with only limited options to communicate to the cyclist ahead. Design solutions derived from the well-studied field of pedestrian-HA V interactions cannot simply be transferred to the here considered cyclist-HA V interactions, since in past research successful design concepts for pedestrians were not beneficial for cyclists [2]. Hence, it is vital to investigate the behavior and experiences of cyclists in more detail and to explore possible design solutions for HA V interaction behavior in these situations. With this study we aim to get more insights into the subjective experience of cyclists travelling in longitudinal traffic, especially during cyclist-vehicle interactions, as well as to derive cyclists' requirements to design safe and desirable cyclist-HA V interactions.

Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att ge en beskrivning av arbetstidsförkortningens påverkan på attraktionsfaktorerna, genom att studera högutbildade personer inom Generation Z samt arbetsgivare som har implementerat arbetstidsförkortning. Metod: Studien har avsett att undersöka arbetstidsförkortningens påverkan på attraktionsfaktorerna gentemot högutbildade personer inom Generation Z. Empirisk data har varit grunden för undersökningen som sedan har jämförts med befintlig teori, vilket innebär att en induktiv forskningsansats har antagits. Studien har tillämpat en tvärsnittsundersökning där kvalitativa intervjuer varit grunden för den empiriska datainsamlingen. Slutsats: Arbetstidsförkortning har visat sig ha en positiv effekt på attraktionsfaktorerna gentemot arbetstagare. Det kan däremot vara av vikt för företag som planerar att implementera arbetstidsförkortning i syfte att attrahera personal att se över dess påverkan på den sociala arbetsmiljön. Företag som har implementerat arbetstidsförkortning har visat sig ha ny kompetent personal mer lättillgängligt än andra företag. / Purpose: The aim of the paper is to provide a description of the impact of working time reduction on the attractiveness factors, by studying highly educated people within Generation Z and employers who have implemented work time reduction. Method: The study aimed to investigate the impact of work time reduction on the attraction factors towards highly educated people within Generation Z. Empirical data has been the basis for the study, which has then been compared with existing theory, which means that an inductive research approach has been adopted. The study has applied a cross-sectional survey where qualitative interviews have been the basis for the empirical data collection. Conclusion: Work time reduction has been shown to have a positive effect on employee attraction factors. However, it may be important for companies planning to implement work time reduction in order to attract staff to consider its impact on the social working environment. Firms that have implemented work time reduction have been found to have skilled labour more readily available than other firms.

This study analysed data obtained from respondents and their medical records to
determine the barriers and motivators for good adherence to ART. Respondents'
records were also reviewed together with their pharmacy refill records to identify
any correlation between .CD4 cell counts, viral load, VL and adherence to
antiretroviral drugs at extension 15 ARV clinic in Gaborone, Botswana. The
study investigated whether the combination of pharmacy refills and pill counts
adherence measurement methodologies could predict immunological recovery
and virologic response through increased CD4 cell counts and suppressed VL. .
There was a positive relationship between adherence, CD4 cell counts and VL.
Pharmacy refills and pill counts adherence measurement methodologies scored
high on sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive values but low on negative

antiretroviral drugs at Katutura Intermediate Hospital (KIH) in Windhoek,
Namibia. The study investigated whether the pharmacy refill adherence
measurement methodology could predict immunological recovery through
increased CD4 cell counts. There was a positive but weak relationship between
adherence and CD4 cell counts. Although the pharmacy refill records could
predict immunological response it was not sensitive enough and should be used
