Polynomial approximations to functions of operators.

Singh, Pravin. January 1994 (has links)
To solve the linear equation Ax = f, where f is an element of Hilbert space H and A is a positive definite operator such that the spectrum (T (A) ( [m,M] , we approximate -1 the inverse operator A by an operator V which is a polynomial in A. Using the spectral theory of bounded normal operators the problem is reduced to that of approximating a function of the real variable by polynomials of best uniform approximation. We apply two different techniques of evaluating A-1 so that the operator V is chosen either as a polynomial P (A) when P (A) approximates the n n function 1/A on the interval [m,M] or a polynomial Qn (A) when 1 - A Qn (A) approximates the function zero on [m,M]. The polynomials Pn (A) and Qn (A) satisfy three point recurrence relations, thus the approximate solution vectors P (A)f n and Q (A)f can be evaluated iteratively. We compare the procedures involving n Pn (A)f and Qn (A)f by solving matrix vector systems where A is positive definite. We also show that the technique can be applied to an operator which is not selfadjoint, but close, in the sense of operator norm, to a selfadjoint operator. The iterative techniques we develop are used to solve linear systems arising from the discretization of Freedholm integral equations of the second kind. Both smooth and weakly singular kernels are considered. We show that earlier work done on the approximation of linear functionals < x,g > , where 9 EH, involve a zero order approximation to the inverse operator and are thus special cases of a general result involving an approximation of arbitrary degree to A -1 . / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, 1994.

Fast Rates for Regularized Least-squares Algorithm

Caponnetto, Andrea, Vito, Ernesto De 14 April 2005 (has links)
We develop a theoretical analysis of generalization performances of regularized least-squares on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces for supervised learning. We show that the concept of effective dimension of an integral operator plays a central role in the definition of a criterion for the choice of the regularization parameter as a function of the number of samples. In fact, a minimax analysis is performed which shows asymptotic optimality of the above-mentioned criterion.

Comparative Study of Several Bases in Functional Analysis

Miranda Navarro, Maria January 2018 (has links)
From the beginning of the study of spaces in functional analysis, bases have been an indispensable tool for operating with vectors and functions over a concrete space. Bases can be organized by types, depending on their properties. This thesis is intended to give an overview of some bases and their relations. We study Hamel basis, Schauder basis and Orthonormal basis; we give some properties and compare them in different spaces, explaining the results. For example, an infinite dimensional Hilbert space will never have a basis which is a Schauder basis and a Hamel basis at the same time, but if this space is separable it has an orthonormal basis, which is also a Schauder basis. The project deals mainly with Banach spaces, but we also talk about the case when the space is a pre Hilbert space.

Grupos clássicos e álgebras de Clifford C* em espaços de Hilbert

Lima, Rian Lopes de January 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Prof. Dr. Roldão da Rocha jr. / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Matemática , 2014. / Clifford algebras in Hilbert spaces are studied, along with the possible defnitions of spinors when the classical Clifford algebra is equipped with an additional structure of algebra C. The groups associated with the Clifford algebras, such as the Clifford-Lipschtz groups, Pin and Spin groups, are introduced together with unitary structures and trace operators in Clifford algebras in Hilbert spaces as well. Von-Neumann algebras are studied and the Bogoliubov automorphism is used to generalize the twisted Clifford-Lipschtz groups, using the graduation in Clifford algebra with the additional structure of algebra C. Fock representations and Hilbert-Schmidt operators are going to be introduced in the exterior algebra underlying the Clifford algebras in Hilbert spaces. In addition, twisted Clifford-Lipschitz groups can be constructed with the Bogoliubov automorphism, when it is an inner automorphism. This defines the Pin and Spin groups in the Clifford algebra with the additional structure of algebra C.

O nÃcleo do calor em uma variedade riemanniana / The heat kernel on a Riemannian manifold

Landerson Bezerra Santiago 25 February 2011 (has links)
In a connected and compact Riemannian Manifold we will introduce the concept of spectre of Laplace operator. Using the existence and unicity of the heat kernel in Riemannian manifold we proof the Hodge composition theorem. This theorem states that the Hilbert space L2(M, g) decompose in direct sum of subspaces with finite dimesion, where each subspace is the eigen-space relative of a eigenvalue of the laplacian. Furthermore, the eigenvalues form a nonnegative sequence the accumulate only in the infinity. After that we begin the construction of the heat kernel and, finally, we show that two isospetral Riemannian manifolds have the same volume.

Signály s omezeným spektrem, jejich vlastnosti a možnosti jejich extrapolace / Bandlimited signals, their properties and extrapolation capabilities

Mihálik, Ondrej January 2019 (has links)
The work is concerned with the band-limited signal extrapolation using truncated series of prolate spheroidal wave function. Our aim is to investigate the extent to which it is possible to extrapolate signal from its samples taken in a finite interval. It is often believed that this extrapolation method depends on computing definite integrals. We show an alternative approach by using the least squares method and we compare it with the methods of numerical integration. We also consider their performance in the presence of noise and the possibility of using these algorithms for real-time data processing. Finally all proposed algorithms are tested using real data from a microphone array, so that their performance can be compared.
