Avskapelse och livsglupskhet : Helig självsvält och oheligt ätande hos Etty Hillesum och Simone Weil

This essay investigates the philosophies and practices of Simone Weil and Etty Hillesum from the viewpoint of their relation to eating. By analyzing them aided by Renée Girard’s theory of mimetic desire, I discuss similarities and differences between Weils and Hillesums work and spiritual development. Entering their thinking through Robert Daly’s notion of a phenomenology of redemption, which describes the form of  mimetic desire that counters, rather than produces, violence, I discuss, guided by Susan Bordo’s work on eating disorders as well as Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, how Weil and Hillesum can be said to engage in this respectively. By contrasting Weil’s decreation with Hillesum's compulsive overeating, or “life-gluttony”, my analysis argues that Hillesum's diaries depict how she copes with violence by practicing a kind of radical self-love, through which she becomes able to reconcile with both herself and her outside world. As for Weil, I argue that the self-destructive ethics that her decreation consists in prevent her from reaching a full reconciliation, insofar as it constitutes only internalized violence, and not a refusal of violence as such. Thus, my conclusion is, Hillesum's philosophy might be said to be an expression of a more complete redemption, as I formulate it taking my departure in Daly's concept, than Weil's. / Denna uppsats diskuterar Simone Weils och Etty Hillesums verk och liv med avstamp i Weils formulering av begreppet avskapelse samt den livshunger, eller livsglupskhet, som Hillesum beskriver i sina dagböcker. Med hjälp av Renée Girards teori om mimetiska begär undersöker den hur självsvält och överätande figurerar i Weil och Hillesums liv och verk, och hur dessa fenomen relaterar till deras respektive andliga och etiska övertygelser. Utifrån Richard Dalys tanke om en försoningens fenomenologi, baserad i Girards teori om mimetiska begär, Susan Bordos analys av ätstörningar som kulturellt fenomen samt Maurice Merleau-Pontys kroppsorienterade fenomenologi utreder den skillnader och likheter mellan Weil och Hillesum med avseende på hur deras etiska övertygelser gestaltas av och i deras liv och verk. Min analys gör gällande att Hillesums dagböcker skildrar hur hon gör upp med våld genom att praktisera ett slags radikal självkärlek, genom vilken hon blir förmögen att försonas med såväl sig själv som sin omvärld. Vad gäller Weil, hävdar jag att den självförintande etik som hennes avskapelse består i omöjliggör en fullkomlig försoning, såtillvida som den endast utgör ett internaliserat våld, och inte en uppgörelse med våldet som sådant. Därmed, är min slutsats, kan Hillesums filosofi möjligen sägas vara ett uttryck för enmer fullkomlig försoning, som jag formulerar den med avstamp i Dalys begrepp, än Weils.

It´s not a secret that the holocaust consisted of horrible actions. One fascinating thing is how two female writers, Etty Hillesums and Simone Weil, was able to express something very different in the face of this terrible time. That’s why this essay provides some answers to the question, what understandings of love are expressed in letters from Hillesums An Interupted Life: The Diaries and Letters of Etty Hillesum 1941 – 1943 and Simone Weils Waiting for God? Both authors wrote their letters with an emphasis on God and that God is necessary for love. They also quite agreed that within every human being there is a core. The core for both Hillesum and Weil is either love or needs love and giving attention to or taking care of your own or others core is an act of love. At last, both describes without doubt love as something relational that always needs more than one part. Despite the similarities in the understandings of love expressed in the letters they have several interesting differences. This essay focuses on the relational perspective of love together with three Greek terms; agape, eros and philia and relates them to the understandings that appear in the letters. Sometimes these understandings of love are very much alike and other times not. The main question and its answers challenge us to ask another question to get a holistic understanding of the expression of love found in the letters. How can these understandings of love be understood in relation to overarching themes such as the conception of God and the essence of human beings? By reading and reflecting on these issues based on the letters, it becomes clear that Hillesum and Weil gets to write their own stories and tell something about mankind, God and love in a context marked by unimaginable evil.

Etty Hillesum's brief life met its tragic end at Auschwitz in the autumn of 1943, when she was just 29 years old, where, along with her family, she was brutally murdered by the Nazis. Luckily for us, though, she managed to leave behind a remarkably rich body of work, composed over the course of merely three years (1941-1943), which has moved – and bewildered – readers and scholars alike ever since its first publication in 1986. The 'problem', however, from a purely theological point of view, has been how (or if) one should interpret these mystical notebooks. This study aims to investigate the 'implicit author' in the text (and thus not necessarily Etty Hillesum herself) from a Christian, Orthodox perspective, with the intention of seeing how the Orthodox understanding of 'deification', θέωσις, comes to expression in it; and in so doing to see what the text, in turn, can teach us about the notion in question. This 'dialectical' approach is characteristic of the investigation. The study seeks to situate itself both (1) in the wider discussion on Etty Hillesum's life and work, where it hopes to bring new and constructive perspectives on how one can interpret her texts, and (2) in the field of Christian, Orthodox research. This latter field of study is fairly young and evolving, and it is my hope to be able to contribute to it, be it ever so little. The result shows that in order to grasp a notion in its entirety, and in order for it to become real in an ontological sense, it must first of all take root in a particular individual; and in the case of the text in question, where the author tries to come to grips with a nearly incomprehensible evil, the notion of 'Theosis' can be seen in many ways; in her emphasis on the personal over and above the social; in her ethical pursuit of 'helping God'; and in her reluctance to adhere to any 'organised religion' – although this, as I hope to show, can be interpreted as a 'Christian' inspiration.

Perpetrators & Possibilities: Holocaust Diaries, Resistance, and the Crisis of Imagination

This thesis examines the way genocide leaves marks in the writings of targeted people. It posits not only that these marks exist, but also that they indicate a type of psychological resistance. By focusing on the ways Holocaust diarists depicted Nazi perpetrators, and by concentrating on the ways language was used to distance the victim from the perpetrator, it is possible to see how Jewish diarists were engaged in alternate and subtle, but nevertheless important, forms of resistance to genocide. The thesis suggest this resistance on the part of victims is similar in many ways to well-known distancing mechanisms employed by perpetrators and that this evidence points to a “crisis of imagination” – for victims and perpetrators alike – in which the capability to envision negation and death, and to identify with the “Other” is detrimental to self-preservation.

In this case study four non-fiction books are being accompanied on their way from the Netherlands to the public in Sweden, that is from one peripheral language into another. Where did the initiative come from? Were there any subsidies and did that matter? What kind of publishers were involved and were there also other agents involved? Who were the most important cultural mediators? How were the books framed in order to be noticed in the new country? How does all this fit in with the sociological theory of transnational cultural transfer? It turned out that these books more or less followed the expected path with a few exceptions: Two of the books were published by large-scale publishers in Sweden although they had not proved to be successful in the Netherlands. And there were no signs of regular co-operation between the involved publishers. Obviously the translated Dutch books in Sweden are such a marginal business for these publishers that they do not influence their network of foreign publishers.  Even if all four books belong to the same genre, they are very differently framed to be noticed in their new country.
