The History of the small theaters in the city of Manaus (1859-1900) approaches the cultural expressions of the amazonian society during the provincial period, focusing on the first theaters of the city: the Straw Theater described by the German traveller Robert Ave-Lallemant, the Comic Variety Theater, from Lima Penante, the Portuguese Beneficient Theater and the Paradise Theater, all of them builded before the sumptuous Amazon Theater. Basing on the rules of the New Cultural History, it is concerning the study of a previous moment to the great production of the rubber, when the spaces of the city and the customs of its inhabitants started to modify and to mold to the European style. The research used bibliographical sources and registers, no matter they had been explored beyond some texts that theoretically base the periodic task, at the of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. We also appeal to other researches on the subject, that analyze the same time, even in other provinces. The objective was to put in practice the exercise of the comparison, that is a basic attitude in the historical analysis. In this context, the first aspects on civilization that arrived to Manaus were examined, the european clothes and the ways of behavior in public, everything from the emphasis of the theater manifestations, that traied to entertain the population, and at the same time, to educate it, in the aspect of the morality based on the bourgeois ideals, or the fine and educated held that was demanded in public. On the other hand, there were also studied the sociabilities and habits of the local inhabitants, like the balls, the religious parties, fishing, the baths in smalls rivers, and so on. One of the conclusions of this study is that even the subject demands inquiry continuity, there are few researches on the culture in that period. This points out amongst other things, the existence of a possible preconception on the subject: being the population composed basically by natives and their descendants, they would have leisure that they could not have relevance for this study: as if the European leisure and customs they only could be significant. / A dissertação Sociabilidade e Cultura. A História dos pequenos teatros na cidade de Manaus (1859-1900) aborda as expressões culturais da sociedade amazonense durante o período provincial, enfocando os primeiros teatros da cidade: o Teatro feito de Palha descrito pelo viajante alemão Robert Avé-Lallemant, o Teatro Variedade Comica, de Lima Penante, o Teatro Beneficente Portuguesa e o Éden Teatro, construídos antes do suntuoso Teatro Amazonas. Fundamentando-se nos preceitos da Nova História Cultural, trata-se do estudo de um momento anterior à grande produção da borracha, quando os espaços da cidade e os costumes de seus moradores começavam a se modificar e a se moldar ao gosto europeu. A pesquisa utilizou-se de fontes bibliográficas e documentais, assim foram explorados além de textos que fundamentam teoricamente o trabalho, periódicos do século XIX e início do século XX. Recorremos também, a outras pesquisas sobre o tema, que analisam a mesma época, embora em outras províncias. O objetivo foi colocar em prática o exercício da comparação, atitude fundamental na análise histórica. Neste contexto, foi examinado os primeiros aspectos civilizatórios que chegavam a Manaus, as vestimentas europeizadas e os modos contidos de se portar em público, tudo a partir da ênfase das manifestações teatrais, que procuravam entreter a população, e ao mesmo tempo, educá-la, no aspecto da moralidade baseada nos ideais burgueses, ou no comportado refinado e educado que se exigia em público. Em contrapartida estudou-se também as sociabilidades e hábitos dos habitantes locais, como os bailes, as festas religiosas, a pesca, os banhos em igarapés. Uma das conclusões desse estudo é que embora o tema exija continuidade de investigação, há poucas pesquisas sobre a cultura desse período. Isto indica dentre outras coisas, a existência de um possível preconceito quanto ao tema: sendo a população composta basicamente por indígenas e seus descendentes, eles teriam lazeres que não poderiam ter relevância para estudo: como se somente o lazer e os costumes europeus pudessem ser significativos.

De acordo com Jean Claude Schmitt (2001), a história, a partir do século XX, com a Escola dos Annales, perde seu caráter de representação dos grandes feitos e passa a considerar as mentalidades e a subjetividade como registros historiográficos importantes. Desse modo, abre-se caminho para a inter-relação da história com outras ciências humanas, as sociais, por exemplo, e com a própria arte, levando, portanto, a uma renovação das fronteiras entre a história e a literatura. Assim, a partir das perspectivas teóricas que relativizam tais fronteiras, entendemos que a obra de Ruffato pretende a revisão dos últimos cinquenta anos da história brasileira, em uma leitura a ―contrapelo‖ da história oficial nacional, sem, no entanto, perder ou diminuir as riquezas estéticas da arte literária. Por isso mesmo, é essencial, também, investigar como Luiz Ruffato trabalha a historicidade, já que é inegável a presença desta nos romances; entender se suas obras apresentam determinados aspectos narrativos, formais e temáticos que os aproximem da natureza do romance histórico, já que rompe com características tradicionais desse subgênero, determinadas por Georg Lukács (2011), principalmente por não representar ficcionalmente um determinado e pontual evento histórico, como uma revolução, mas todo o processo da modernização do Brasil por meio dos pontos de vista do proletariado urbano, flagrado em sua constituição como classe; por fim, investigaremos como as obras permitem relações com a metodologia da História Nova assim como estabelecida pela Escola dos Annales, ao desvelar literariamente as subjetividades dos indivíduos marginalizados socialmente. / This study investigates the literary features which make Mamma, son tanto felice (2005) and O mundo inimigo (2005) – the first two books of the Inferno Provisório (2005-2012) pentalogy – into original novels whose experimental language, internal organisation and commitment to the real suggest a critical rereading of both the historical and literary discourses. According to Jean Claude Schmitt (2001), with the Annales School in the twentieth century, history has ceased to represent great feats and started considering the mentalities and subjectivity as important forms of historiographical record. This has paved the way for history to intersect with other fields of the humanities, like social sciences, as well as with art, which leads to the redrawing of the bounds between history and literature. Hence, considering the theoretical perspectives that blur these boundaries, we understand that Ruffato‘s works revise the past fifty years of Brazilian history by reading our official national history ―against the grain‖ without sacrificing the aesthetic richness of literary art. Therefore, to argue this case, we need to examine how Luiz Ruffato works out historicity in his novels in order to check whether or not his works contain formal and thematic aspects that bring them closer to the historical novel. works eschew the defining characteristics of this subgenre determined by György Lukács (2011), mainly because they do not fictionally represent a specific historical event, like a revolution. Instead, they portray the whole modernisation process in Brazil from the perspective of the urban proletariat pictured as class. Finally, we shall investigate how these works bear parallels with the methodologies of the Nouvelle histoire and the Annales School as they literarily unveil the subjectivity of the socially marginalised individuals.

The collectionwas conceived within at the National University of Philosophy of Brazil (FNFI), peculiarly by the students responsible for publishing the Bulletin of History (BH) under the guidance of Nelson Werneck Sodré and directly involved the activities of the Institute for Brazilian Studies (ISEB). The book criticized the traditional historiography presented in textbook used in Brazil and aimed an innovation int he context thereof. Extolled the need for social reforms - mainly educational ones - framing up on the political prospect that the country was experiencing during the Goulart government, had a political dimension and was the object of struggle. With the establishment of the military regime, the voluems were burnt and New History banned and their authors targets of persecution. / Diante da constatação de pouquíssimas pesquisas em programas de Pós-graduação em História que apresentem como objetivo principal o livro didático de História, este trabalho investiga a coleção de livros didáticos destinados ao ensino secundário brasileiro História Nova do Brasil - publicada em março de 1964 pela Campanha de Assistência ao Estudante (CASES). A coleção foi concebida no seio acadêmico da Universidade Nacional de Filosofia do Brasil (FNFI), peculiarmente pelos alunos responsáveis pela edição do Boletim de História (BH) sob a orientação de Nelson Werneck Sodré, e envolveu diretamente as atividades do Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros (ISEB). A obra criticava a historiografia tradicional apresentada nos manuais escolares utilizados no Brasil e objetivava uma inovação no seu conteúdo. Exaltava a necessidade de reformas sociais - principalmente educacional - enquadrando-se no prospecto político que o País vivenciava durante o governo João Goulart; possuía uma dimensão política e foi objeto de luta. com a instauração do regime militar, os volumes da História Nova foram queimados e proibidos e seus autores alvos de perseguição.
