Gray City of the Midway : the University of Chicago and the search for American urban culture, 1890-1932

Gage, Stephen January 2017 (has links)
This research examines the American industrial city in the early twentieth century and the role of cultural institutions in the shift to an urban-oriented society. In-depth analysis of the University of Chicago’s architecture and planning traces how urban form emerged gradually as an assimilation of different traditions. It challenges a planning literature reliant on narrowly-prescribed categories and qualifies recent cultural histories that give a more nuanced portrayal of Progressive Era urban culture but which fail to consider the built environment directly. The research’s critical questions reconsider the role of nature within the city, the definition of the urban public, and the intertwining of commerce and civic culture. Its methodology uses original analytic drawings which trace how the University expanded over time, united with consideration of previously-unexplored written and visual archives. This combination of analytic mapping and archival investigation on one institution reveals new insights into how the industrial city was shaped as a whole. The findings identify paradoxes in the University’s planning, which promoted the dynamism of the modern city while evoking the image of bucolic Oxbridge. These contradictory impulses were enhanced by the University’s location on the Midway Plaisance, a public boulevard typifying the urban/rural hybridity of Chicago’s park system. The result was an urbanised nature, or the charged proximity of urban density and pastoral green space. Disputing the perceived eclipse of the nineteenth-century Parks movement, the term ‘urbanised nature’ suggests how earlier concern for naturalistic landscape was fused with the ideals of twentieth-century Progressivism. The research also contests previous emphasis on the exclusionary cultural practices of this period, as the heterogeneous development of the University’s Collegiate Gothic campus reveals a struggle to balance commercial interests, pastoral imagery, and monumental urban display. More broadly, this research sheds new light on the contradictions that shaped the American city in the early twentieth century—an urban culture driven by the contentious relationship between industrial capitalism and civic institutions, a public realm animated by mass appeal and elite tradition, and a spatial order drawn from urban and rural models.

The historic evolution of women’s education, the philosophical evolution of feminism and its influence in the academic and administrative work of first women at the Montpellier University and its institutional process of feminisation

Velis Chavez, Raul Humberto 05 July 2016 (has links)
At the end of the XIX century, the firs women arrive to the University like students in the domains that traditionally were attributed to men. These women become the beginning of the feminisation process of one institution with a strong masculine personality, created at the Middle Ages and reinforced during the Humanism and the Enlightenment. Despite all the misogynous conceptions about the intellectual capacity of women they become professors and even administrative officers, directors and deans within this institution. But this participation of women at the University it’s not accidental, it is the product of the relation between the historic evolution of women’s education, the philosophical evolution of feminism and the institutional evolution of the University itself. This thesis seeks for the verification of the relation of these three elements at the academic and administrative participation of women at the University of Montpellier.

The methodology used is a qualitative approach emphasizing a bibliographic research. Through the history of the University the researcher aims to demonstrate how this Institution was born at the heart of the Church and had always participated in the educative múnus of the Church in her mission of evangelization. The researcher also wants to show the long process that transpired until the birth of the University in Brazil and the conflicting interests sorrounding this birth. Then browsing through the documents of the Pontifical Magistrate, of the Vatican II Council, of the Episcopal Council of Latin America (CELAM) and the National Conference of the Bishops in Brazil( CNBB), the researcher investigates how the official pronouncements of the Church emphasizes the University in the diferent periods of history and the expectations about it. Finally, the researcher reflects about some aspects of the action of the Church in an Institution such as a Catholic University (PUC-Campinas), evaluating its limits, potencials and looking for new perspectives of presence and pastoral work in a complex university setting / O presente trabalho reflete a Universidade Católica como espaço de ação evangelizadora da Igreja e como essa ação se desenvolve concretamente no interior de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior Católica, explicitando suas potencialidades, limites e contradições. A metodologia utilizada é a abordagem qualitativa enfocando a pesquisa bibliográfica.

Bargmann Netto, Domingos Luiz 06 October 2000 (has links)
This thesis focuses the audiovisual production pragmactical aspects mainly the video one wich is being made in the University of São Paulo (USP) academic environment. The University as an environment where Science is developed, throughout research and it reproduces the scientific thinking throughout education, it is also a fertile environment to audiovisual activities. Along the 19th and the 20th centuries, the scientific progress made possible the creation of sound and image technologies, since photo til WEB sites, wich so deeply enlightened the contemporany world. By the turn, these same techniques contribute to development of the scientific researches such as the telescopy, the microscopy and the other systems of the lighting spectrum analyses. The USP, along its 60 years old history, sheltered many production of films and videos linked to teaching, research and extension activities. We enlightened not only past experiences but also the up-to-date conditions of video production in USP. This survey shows same constant issues wich to the need of audiovisual policies in the Universiy.

Diploma privilege: legal education at the University of Melbourne 1857-1946

Waugh, John January 2009 (has links)
When Australian law teaching began in 1857, few lawyers in common-law systems had studied law at university. The University of Melbourne's new course joined the early stages of a dual transformation, of legal training into university study and of contemporary common law into an academic discipline. Victoria's Supreme Court immediately gave the law school what was known in America as 'diploma privilege': its students could enter legal practice without passing a separate admission exam. Soon university study became mandatory for locally trained lawyers, ensuring the law school's survival but placing it at the centre of disputes over the kind of education the profession should receive. Friction between practitioners and academics hinted at the negotiation of new roles as university study shifted legal training further from its apprenticeship origins. The structure of the university (linked to the judiciary through membership of its governing council) and the profession (whose organisations did not control the admission of new practitioners) aided the law school's efforts to defend both its training role and its curriculum against outside attack. / Legal academics turned increasingly to the social sciences to maintain law's claim to be not only a professional skill, but an academic discipline. A research-based and reform-oriented theory of law appealed to the nascent academic profession, linking it to legal practice and the development of public policy but at the same time marking out for the law school a domain of its own. American ideas informed thinking about research and, in particular, pedagogy, although the university's slender financial resources, dependent on government grants, limited change until after World War II. In other ways the law school consciously departed from American models. It taught undergraduate, not graduate, students, and its curriculum included history, jurisprudence and non-legal subjects alongside legal doctrine. Its few professors specialised in public law and jurisprudence, leaving private law to a corps of part-time practitioner-teachers. The result was a distinctive model of state-certified compulsory education in both legal doctrine and the history and social meanings of law.

The development of twentieth century criticisms of The Canterbury tales

Gosnell, Donald Keith 01 January 1967 (has links) (PDF)
It will be the purpose of this thesis to survey and to evaluate twentieth-century criticisms of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Because the topic is so broad, it is necessary to find methods of limiting the subject so that it· may be adequately covered herein. This paper will be limited primarily to books published on the topic under consideration. To cover all the work in periodical literature would go beyond the scope of this study. Perhaps that task can be covered by someone else.
