Seamster, Sewer And Sewist : The Titles For Those Who Sew From 1470 To 2022

Tendal, Tora January 2023 (has links)
This corpus study has focused on the titles used by those who sew as a hobby, primarily on the six most frequently used ones. The corpora used are Early English Books Online, Google Books Ngram Viewer and a corpus compiled in SketchEngine. The research also looked at the etymology and how their meanings might have changed from 1470 to 2022. The focus was also on to whom the titles have been assigned and if they are professionally trained or hobbyists. Among the findings, tailor is the most frequently used title over time; it is used more for male professionals. On the other hand, the most popular title today is sewist, which is used primarily by hobbyists, both males and females. Sewer is dropping in popularity while the others are increasing, possibly because it has several homographs making it easy to misinterpret in today’s society where the internet is used so frequently. However, it is still popular as it is the second most used title. In addition, seamster has changed whom it denotes the most frequently, from being for females to both genders to males, while seamstress is solely used for females across time. Finally, dressmaker is mainly used for women who sew professionally.

Key Factors Considered When Purchasing a VR Hobby Skill Training Simulator : A Consumer Perspective / Nyckelfaktorer som tas hänsyn till vid köp av en VR Hobby Skill Training Simulator : Ett konsumentperspektiv

Lindmark, Ada, Nilsson Kinberg, Kajsa January 2022 (has links)
In recent years, VR and VR devices have become more popular due to advances intechnology and lower costs, making the technology more accessible to the general public. One application within VR that is expected to grow is VR hobby skill training simulators (VR HSTS), which are now accessible not only for education and companies but also to consumers. In contrast to games which are mainly played for entertainment purposes, and unlike simulators used in educational or professional settings not purchased by the practitioners themselves, VR HSTS add complexity. This is characterized by a systematic pursuit of activities meaningful for the practitioner and a social world that is formed by involved participants sharing a common interest in a specific hobby. This raises questions about the customers of VR HSTS and their purchasing behavior, where the literature has not yet covered this new and fast-developing area. As companies strive to meet customer needs and create desirable value propositions, it is crucial to understand the customers and their behavior. Through semi-structured interviews with customers of a VR HSTS, this study investigates their consumer behavior with the purpose of understanding what drives consumers to purchase a VR HSTS. By analyzing the results using thematic analysis and a theoretical framework adapted from the theory of planned behavior, the factors seen as important in the decision-making process are identified. This study concludes that the key factors considered when purchasing a VR HSTS are perceived quality of VR, perceived quality of the specific VR HSTS, what other people, who practice the same hobby but who the customers do not know, think about the VR HSTS, what people who they do know think about the product or purchase, money, ease of purchase and use. This study finds the research area of consumer behavior within VR HSTS to be of great importance in order to understand customers in a fast-developing field, where our study contributes with new insights and factors important for the customers whenmaking a VR HSTS purchase.

Women and needlework in Britain, 1920-1970

Robinson, Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
This thesis addresses needlework between 1920 and 1970 as a window into women's broader experiences, and also asserts it as a valid topic of historical analysis in its own right. Needlecraft was a ubiquitous part of women's lives which has until recently been largely neglected by historians. The growing historiography of needlework has relied heavily on fashion and design history perspectives, focusing on the products of needlework and examples of creative needlewomen. Moving beyond this model, this thesis establishes the importance of process as well as product in studying needlework, revealing the meanings women found in, attached to, and created through the ephemeral moment of making. Searching for the ordinary and typical, it eschews previous preoccupations with creation, affirming re-creation and recreation as more central to amateur needlework. Drawing upon diverse sources including oral history research, objects, Mass Observation archives, and specialist needlework magazines, this thesis examines five key aspects of women's engagement with needlework: definitions of ‘leisure' and ‘work'; motivations of thrift in peacetime and war; emotions; the modern and the traditional and finally, the gendering of needlework. It explores needlework through three central themes of identity, obligation and pleasure. Whilst asserting the validity and importance of needlework as a subject of research in its own right, it also contributes to larger debates within women's history. It sheds light on the chronology and significance of domestic thrift, the meanings of feminised activities, the emotional context of home front life, women's engagement with modern design and concepts of ‘leisure' and ‘work' within women's history.

Using the FRDPARRC design methodology to drive innovation in the HETDEX PFIP support adjustable strut assembly

Molina, Homar 16 February 2011 (has links)
This thesis provides background information on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET), HET Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), Gough-Stewart platforms (GSP), the Prime Focus Instrument Package (PFIP) support structure, and the design methodology used to design said support structure. Each component is analyzed from the point of view of Professor Alex Slocum’s FRDPARRC design methodology. Each aspect of the design is shown to have been derived by following the steps of Slocum’s design method. Material selection, manufacturing techniques, and integration of off-the-shelf components into the support system are also discussed in reference to FRDPARRC. The assembly procedure for the PFIP structure is outlined. Finally, using specific examples from the detailed design, the FRDPARRC method itself is analyzed and its ability to drive innovation in design is evaluated. / text

lowercase t (parting with and for caps lock Moondialed No +***** *****8 [Orbituary]) : Mezzanine 2

Degrér, Christofer January 2018 (has links)
When I write I, I also write we (say we also write that we’re momentarily in possession of the possibilities, and as for the possibilities: they have us), as in my hyperbolic twin brother and I, and from that point on (as well as before) in company with the gaps between us. The auto-corrections, the imposed circumstances, the complicities, and some conspirationalist copings within a system with no clearly identifiable nemesis. Here, the act of resistance to whatever is playing us, also enacts the playing of that which plays us. The heinous power of family and narrative insists. Two lead narratives are interwoven during the course of time it took for a pizza to be delivered (from pizzeria Marco Polo): Looping on a Panasonic Viera TX-55AX630E, the  search for a/my lost and/or hidden dad arrives through the mispronunciation of the word “that” during a negotiation in a park. Where a tangled hypothesis, along the lines of “what if the plot device of a shot of a moon in a video used to forward time (as in an alternative to ‘later that night’) was a graphic representation of an analog clock recognized in a to-be sliced pizza that is eventually consumed as a means to induce a food coma?” takes place (and time, as saved time is always already lost). It’s almost dark already. Also it's not, and the future held hostage by the river of the forest of the woods is followed by the sense of not being able to tell if there’s an emotion or a feeling present. Visits from passed pasts. It all starts to feel originatory. Thanks to X, this keeps on happening, thoughts and behaviours about suspicious timing and holistic systems keep on happening. This keeps on happening, and it works its way into physical works in an exhibition space with no reference to an infirmary, where parrot tulips are emotional flowers, a print is printed using a temperamental printer, sawdust creates glossy eyes, and all locked doors are eventually keyed out. An investigation into conditions of influence, co-authorship, connectivity, all within a space cohabited by comedy, sentimentality, and other states subject to flatness.
