The effects of contextual cues on consumers' perceptions of comparative price advertisments

Hyun, Soeun 14 December 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to understand Korean consumers' perceptual processes induced by comparative price advertisements. While controlling for intrinsic product cue effects, this study examines the joint effects of extrinsic cues, such as comparative price (regular price /sale price), brand name, country-of-manufacture, and retailer name, on a consumer's perception of a product's price and quality. In examining the effects of advertising contextual cues, this study incorporates consumer perceptual processes, the processes through which the external cues are perceived and compared to or moderated by other variables. The perceptual structure is based on relevant theories and accumulated knowledge from research in this area. Specially adapted theories for this study are the adaptation-level theory, the message learning theory, and the transaction utility theory. / Ph. D.

Microwave appliance performance as affected by container geometry and material

Barber, Judith D. 12 March 2013 (has links)
Effects of container geometry and material on microwave cooking performance, as measured by evenness of cooking, firmness, and moisture content were compared. Three food items were heated in round, tube, loaf, and square containers made of clear glass, amber glass, thermoset polyester, and polysulfone. Unflavored gelatin, custard, and cakes were prepared three times in each of the 13 microwave containers. Evenness of cooking was determined by comparing meltdown and temperature in gelatin, temperature and separation/uncooked portions in custard, and index to volume in cakes. Firmness was measured in custard while moisture content was determined in cakes. In analysis of the data, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test were performed. Significant differences were found between shapes as food items heated more evenly in tube and round containers than in square containers. Food quality was affected more by shape than by material. Foods prepared in the, plastic materials were more evenly heated than in the glass materials. Statistically, shape and material interacted with each other for three measures of microwave appliance performance temperatures and separation/uncooked portions of custards, and index to volume in cakes. The interaction of shape and material was greater as the heating time increased. / Master of Science

The objective ofthis thesis is to discuss the application of the methodologies of Life Cycle Cost Analysis(LCCA) and of Statistical Analysis as tools to propose energy efficiency standards, complementally to the voluntary labels already existent in the Brazilian one-door refrigerators. Another objective is to study the role of these instruments (energy efficiency labels and standards) in order to seek technical subsidies for the establishment of maximum level of electric energy consumption for electrical equipments in Brazil. The LCCA and Statistical Analysis methodologies permit to evaluate the impacts of the energy efficiency increase in electrical equipments commercialized in Brazil, resulting in important savings (energy, financial, carbon dioxide emissions avoided etc) for the country and its citizens. The results of this study offer important data to subsidize deeper discussions with manufacturers and the govemment to stipulate minimum energy efficiency standards for the Brazilian refrigerators. One of the important conclusions is that, even though there are other methodologies, such as the Statistical Analysis which does not take technological costs into account, the LCCA allows to better understand the market (costs, technological capacity etc) and suggests the best MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) with the maximum economic retum for the consumer. Nevertheless, when it is not possible to collect all the necessary data to apply the LCCA, it can be used a more simplified analysis, such as the Statistical Analysis methodology / Mestrado / Mestre em Planejamento de Sistemas Energéticos

A transmissão do conhecimento culinário no Brasil urbano do século XX / Transmission of the culinary knowledge in the urban Brazil during the 20th century

Oliveira, Debora Santos de Souza 09 April 2010 (has links)
This work seeks to establish the relationship between life in the big cities of the Brazilian Southeast, particularly in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the practice as well as the way culinary knowledge was shared during the 20th century. The moment of formation of the Brazilian middle class, the availability of consumer goods related to modernity, e.g. the gas stove, appliances and industrialized foods, combined with the role attributed to women in the new urban social order, created a rupture in the way culinary recipes were prepared and passed down from one generation to another. This rupture was followed by a new culinary pattern, which in turn affected the values and the symbology comprised in the cooking act.

Design and development of a methanol concentration controller for fuel cells

Viljoen, Marius 09 September 2010 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech.) (Engineering: Electrical, Dept.: Electronic Engineering))--Vaal University of Technology, 2008. / The demand for higher efficiency, sustainability and cleaner power sources increases daily. A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell is a power source that can be applied for small to medium household appliances and office equipment. It can ideally be used for operating appliances like notebook computers on remote sites where no electrical power is available. One of the problems in methanol fuel cells is methanol crossover. Methanol crossover occurs when methanol is not completely used in the process of generating electrons, and a certain percentage of the methanol is wasted. Crossover may damage the proton exchange membrane of the fuel cell and reduce the efficiency of a DMFC. Literature reviews were done and suggestions from other writers are discussed on how to reduce methanol crossover. This research focuses primarily on the fact that crossover can be controlled by controlling the methanol / water concentration. A prototype methanol controller was built with an ultrasonic sensor for detecting the density of the methanol/water mixture and a sensor for the temperature of the mixture; this was done because the density of the mixture is dependant on the temperature and the concentration. The controller was calibrated to determine the amount per volume of water and methanol which enables the controller to control the percentage of methanol in the water. The prototype also had the feature built in to adjust the mixture in order to enable the study on the effects of crossover. A data logger function was added to store collected data on a personal computer for the study on methanol and water. It was observed that the sensor was sensitive enough and was able to produce 1% increments of the level of methanol concentration in the water provided the temperature was stable. A methanol controller was successfully built to ensure the correct volume of methanol. / Telkom Centre of Excellence
