Saneamento rural: estudo de caso na comunidade do Rio Ligação no município de Francisco Beltrão - PR

Campos, Karina Cozer de 29 September 2017 (has links)
Studying housing and sanitation in rural areas is relevant in view of the persistent Brazilian housing needs demonstrated by the indicators of housing shortage and housing inadequacy in rural settings. Given the importance of sanitation and the harm and problems that lack of sanitation can cause to inhabitants and the environment, specifically in rural areas, the purpose of this research was to prepare a case study on rural housing and sanitation at the Rio Ligação rural community housing units located in the municipality of Francisco Beltrão/PR. Diagnosis of sanitation in the community was conducted taking into account the following aspects: status of the housing in which the dwellers live; community infrastructure; identification of domestic wastewater treatment systems used in the dwellings and the final destination of solid waste, with a discussion of harm caused to health and the environment. The field study involved on-site visits and technical observation. A sewage and water treatment system was implanted by means of a practical activity undertaken with community dwellers. This enabled the provision of information and learning of new techniques that can be replicated in each household. The community is comprised of 46 housing units (HU). Interviews were conducted and questionnaires were administered in 45 HUs. The results of the study show the existence of many HUs in precarious conditions, lack of hygiene, inadequate sanitation facilities, incorrect destination of domestic wastewater and solid waste, lack of treatment of the water consumed by the dwellers, in addition to finding that the Rio Ligação community does not have sufficient basic sanitation, nor public health and education facilities. The conclusion reached is that the community studied needs more sanitation actions aimed at providing its inhabitants with quality of life with regard to basic sanitation, housing, health and environment. It is hoped that this sanitation study will result in the municipal, state and federal-level governments paying more attention to actions and public policies for rural areas, especially for families in less favourable situations, deprived of minimum living and basic sanitation conditions.

The rural elderly: personal innovativeness toward housing and acceptance of nontraditional housing types

Kwon, Oh-Jung 02 October 2007 (has links)
The major purpose of this study was to determine the factors which affect elderly individuals' innovativeness toward housing and factors which affect the acceptance of nontraditional housing type(s) by elderly individuals. The study analyzed data from the Southern Regional Research Project, 5-194, "Barriers and Incentives to Affordable Housing." The sample consisted of 1,878 respondents over age 55 who resided in 28 communities in seven southern states. A conceptual study framework was proposed to show the variables and relationships among the variables involved in this study and to test hypotheses. A theory of "diffusion of innovations" developed by Rogers (1983) was used as the theoretical background for this study. Two knowledge continuum indices of Weber, McCray, and Claypool (1985), based on the adoption process of Rogers (1983), were used to measure acceptance of nontraditional housing types: mobile homes, apartments or townhouses, solar houses, earth-sheltered houses, or a combination of these four housing types. / Ph. The receptivity to housing policy initiatives: adequate and affordable housing in the rural south

Shelton, Gladys G. 28 July 2008 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to assess the impact of housing actors’ housing knowledge and involvement, perceptions of community Situations influencing housing, support for housing programs, and demographic characteristics on their receptiveness to housing policy initiatives. Perceptions of housing policy initiatives relative to funding for housing assistance and support for land use controls also were examined. The study analyzed data from the Southern Regional Research Project, S-194, "Barriers and Incentives to Affordable Housing." Responses from 786 housing actors living and/or working in 28 communities in seven southern states were analyzed. A conceptual model was proposed to test the hypothesized relationships. Relationships were examined by multiple regression. Two hypotheses were tested as dictated by the conceptual model. One hypothesis stated that housing actors’ receptiveness to housing policy initiatives relative to funding for housing assistance was not a function of housing knowledge, perceptions, support and personal demographic characteristics. The first regression equation explained 45% of the variability in housing actors’ receptiveness to funding for housing assistance. The four variables, housing discrimination towards groups with special needs, support of loans and grants for housing and community development, rental assistance, and homeowner assistance, entered the equation. The second hypothesis stated that housing actors’ receptiveness to housing policy initiatives relative to support for land use controls was not a function of housing knowledge, perceptions, support and personal demographic characteristics. The second regression equation explained only 14% of the variability in housing actors’ receptiveness to support for land use controls. Housing discrimination towards groups with special needs, demand for manufactured housing, support of loans and grants for homeowner assistance, and rental assistance were the contributing variables in the second model. Based on these analyses, the results suggest that the models tested should be revised. / Ph. D.

An assessment of the role played by Polokwane Local Municipality in service delivery within Manthorwane Community of Limpopo Province

Mmola, Dinkgolang Matildah January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (M.DEV.) --University of Limpopo, 2012 / The main purpose of this study was to assess the role played by Polokwane Local Municipality in delivery of basic services such as water, sanitation, electricity , and housing in the village of Manthorwane, Limpopo Province. It was of critical importance for the researcher to investigate this area, as there was no study done before related to basic services delivery. The objectives of the study were ,to assess the extent to which the municipality is providing basic services, investigate the strength, weaknesses , examine the impact of the Municipality‘s role in the development of Manthorwane Village and recommending strategies for enhancing the level of basic service delivery. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used because the study combines the use of instruments and methods for measurement and the way the researcher interacts with the people. Interviewees and questionnaires were used to understand the community’s feeling towards delivery of basic services. The researcher has gone through a detailed process of investigation, where it is found that there is no delivery of basic services (electricity, sanitation, housing). Only water has been provided in this village. The researcher also discovered that there are no valid reasons why the Polokwane Municipality has not delivered the services above. It is also revealed that there are no stakeholder’s participation and consultations meetings when the decisions for service delivery are taken. Evaluation and monitoring tools are not applied when implementing projects. There are some recommendations proposed to the municipality. The municipality could intensify their training process in a way in which the officials could be productive to the community. Transparency must always be practiced for the municipality to excel in their delivery services. Intergovernmental relationship is also encouraged. Awareness programs must be done effectively so that the community is aware of all activities done in their area.

The impact of Impucuko (modernisation) of rural homestead living spaces on the dwellers in a selected area of Umbumbulu, South of Durban

Mlambo, Hlengiwe January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the Degree Master of Applied Arts in Interior Design, Durban University of Technology, 2016. / This study discusses the impact of modernisation of rural homestead living spaces on dwellers in a selected area of Umbumbulu, south of Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa. The study was conducted after a change was noticed within the rural homesteads built environment. Factors responsible for the changes in building/ dwelling shape, size, style, as well as the choice of materials (SSSM) used were discussed. The study further examined the impact of the listed changes within the social context of Umbumbulu’s rural dwellers, while addressing in-depth questions around the topic of modernisation, especially within the confines of rural homesteads and living spaces. A qualitative research approach was employed where an interpretative research paradigm was chosen as a theoretical framework for the study. Data consisted of seven semi structured interviews. The research design consisted of themes, the analysis, as well as the findings in relation to literature. The conclusion showed what the rural dwellers understand about modernisation in a rural context, as well as how it has impacted the changes in building/ dwelling shape, size, style, as well as in the choice of materials used. Three identifiable themes were discussed namely: 1. modernisation; 2. change in building shape, style, size and materials; and 3. positive living experience. Links were made between the themes which in turn indicate how modernisation has had an impact on rural homestead living spaces and dwellers. / M
