Um método híbrido aplicado é proposto para um problema inverso que trata de uma cavidade tridimensional preenchida com meio transparente. As paredes são assumidas cinza e difusas, e o único mecanismo de transferência de calor presente é a radiação térmica. É um caso idealizado, mas que encontra ampla aplicação em sistemas de engenharia. Prescrevem-se duas condições de contorno na base da cavidade – temperatura e fluxo de calor – e, para satisfazêlas, buscam-se o fluxo de calor e a distribuição espacial dos aquecedores. Na superfície superior, que contêm os aquecedores, nenhuma condição de contorno é imposta. Este tipo de problema, quando solucionado através de técnicas convencionais, envolve um procedimento de tentativa e erro, que, além de demandar um elevado tempo computacional, conduz a resultados pouco precisos. Na análise inversa, opta-se por otimização ou pela aplicação de um método de regularização, pois o problema resultante é mal condicionado por envolver a equação integral de Fredholm de primeira espécie. Neste trabalho, optou-se por acoplar otimização e regularização como uma alternativa baseada no emprego distinto dessas duas formas de abordagem. A tarefa de busca por posições para os aquecedores ficou por conta do método da Otimização Extrema Generalizada, enquanto o método de regularização da Decomposição em Valores Singulares Truncada calcula o fluxo de calor dos aquecedores para cada configuração gerada pelo processo de otimização. A aplicação da técnica híbrida conduziu a resultados mais precisos do que aqueles que normalmente se obtêm apenas com regularização, reduzindo consideravelmente o tempo computacional da solução baseada apenas na otimização. / This work considers the inverse analysis in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure with diffuse-gray surfaces. The locations and powers of the heaters sources are left unconstrained and two conditions are imposed on the design surface – uniform heat flux and temperature distributions. The solution to this kind of problem by conventional techniques is possible only with trial-and-error procedure and in this case, the forward solution will be run oftentimes without guarantee to find out a good answer. The aim is determine the powers and locations of the heaters to attain both uniform heat flux and temperature on the design surface. A new solution procedure – termed hybrid solution – which couples two methods, the Generalized Extremal Optimization (GEO) and the Truncated Singular Value Decomposition (TSVD) is proposed. The search of locations is treated as an optimization problem, by GEO algorithm, whereas the solution of the system equation, that embodies the Fredholm integral equation of first kind and, therefore, is expected to be ill-conditioned, is build up through a TSVD regularization method. The hybrid method provides better results than TSVD and, when compared with GEO, reduces the computational time substantially.

Hybrid Ray-Traced Reflections in Real-Time : in OpenGL 4.3Frid Kastrati, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
Context. Reaching photo realistic results when rendering 3D graphics in real-time is a hard computational task. Ray-tracing gives results close to this but is too expensive to be run at real-time frame rates. On the other hand rasterized methods such as deferred rendering are able to keep the tight time constraints with the support of modern hardware. Objectives. The basic objective is to merge deferred rendering and ray-tracing into one rasterized pipeline for dynamic scenes. In the thesis the proposed method is explained and compared to the methods it merges. Image quality, execution time and VRAM usage impact are investigated. Methods. The proposed method uses deferred rendering to render the result of the primary rays. Some pixels are marked, based on material properties for further rendering with ray-tracing. Only reflections are presented in the thesis but it has been proven that other global illumination effects can be implemented in the ray-tracing framework used. Results and Conclusions. The hybrid method is proved through experiments to be between 2.49 to 4.19 times faster than pure ray-tracing in the proposed pipeline. For smaller scenes it can be run at frame rates close to real-time, but, for larger scenes such as the Crytek Sponza scene the real-time feeling is lost. However, interactivity is never lost. It is also proved that a simple adjustment to the original framework can save almost 2/3 of the memory spent on A-buffers. Image comparisons prove that the technique can compete with offline ray tracers in terms of image quality.

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) covers a set of tools and techniques that aim to estimate the environmental impacts generated by a product or service all along its life-cycle including: rawmaterial extraction, production steps, transportation, use phase and end-of-life scenarios.The Life-Cycle Inventory (LCI) is a key step in LCA. It focuses on quantifying all physicaland/or monetary flows involved in the life-cycle of the product/service considered. Theseflows are named as ‘elementary flows’ in ISO terms. After having dealt with the main issuesof the ‘Goal and Scope definition’ step, that is giving a clear definition of the ‘functional unit’to consider, setting clear boundaries between elements to count in and those to disregard,practitioners need a coherent framework to quantify elementary flows and estimate missingelements. Several methodologies have been developed, each of them with both clearadvantages but also distinct disadvantages, depending on the purpose of the study: processbasedmethods, Input-Output based methods (IO-based methods), and also hybrid methods.In 2004, Suh suggested a method known as IHA (Integrated Hybrid Analysis) that appears towipe out the strict boundary between process-based and IO-based methods, taking advantagesof both methods as complementarities. Previous hybrid models were found incompleteregarding end-of-life scenario, especially with open-loop recycling.However, Suh admits that there remain several drawbacks in the IHA model, such as thetreatment of international trade and flows of products and services. They are usuallyconsidered as a single, homogeneous commodity despite their huge variety. This is apersistent limitation, already known by process-based and IO-based LCA practitioners. In aglobalized economy, where most products are manufactured in one place and consumed onthe other side of the world, this serious limitation cannot hold any longer.In this thesis, a review of both process-based, IO-based and hybrid methods for LCI ispresented, in terms of principles, advantages and limitations. It is followed by an explanationand demonstration of the mathematics underpinning the IHA model. Then, a model isproposed that would enable the model to take international trade into account. This is enabledthanks to the inspiration provided by a multi-regional framework proposed for ecologicalfootprint calculation. A numerical example supports this suggestion.The outcomes of this improved model are thought to go beyond its initial aims: the multiregionalIHA model could act as a variable geometry model where strongly affected regionsare efficiently focused on, without disregarding the others. This could prove efficient inavoiding side-effects of policy-making. Also, it would enable the development of moreregion-specific environmental impact coefficients, thus putting less pressure on fragileecosystems. The IHA model is a robust model: it is simple to handle – provided a userfriendlyinterface exists – but with a complex and evolutionary engine. It is compatible withan iterative progress in data collection. User-friendly software development could proveefficient to spread LCA practice and increase information exchange among industries,database builders and researchers. Using a multi-region framework would help industriescustomize impact assessment according to both the regional environmental condition andspecific geographic distribution of the supply chain, thus enriching their toolbox for strategicplanning.

A numerical hybrid method for modeling outdoor sound propagation in complex urban environmentsPasareanu, Stephanie 23 April 2014 (has links)
Prediction of the sound field in large urban environments has been limited thus far by the heavy computational requirements of conventional numerical methods such as boundary element (BE), finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), or ray-tracing methods. Recently, a considerable amount of work has been devoted to developing energy-based methods for this application, and results have shown the potential to compete with conventional methods. However, these developments have been limited to two-dimensional (2-D) studies (along street axes), and no real description of the phenomena at issue has been exposed (e.g., diffraction effects on the predictions).
The main objectives of the present work were (i) to evaluate the feasibility of an energy-based method, the diffusion model (DM), for sound-field predictions in large, 3-D complex urban environments, (ii) to propose a numerical hybrid method that could improve the accuracy and computational time of these predictions, and (iii) to verify the proposed hybrid method against conventional numerical methods.
The proposed numerical hybrid method consists of a full-wave model coupled with an energy-based model. The full-wave model is used for predicting sound propagation (i) near the source, where constructive and destructive interactions between waves are substantial, and (ii) outside the cluttered environment, where free-field-like conditions apply. The energy-based model is used in regions where diffusion conditions are met. The hybrid approach, as implemented in this work, is a combination of FDTD and DM models.
Results from this work show the role played by diffraction near buildings edges close to the source and near the exterior boundaries of the computational domain, and its impact on the predictions. A wrong modeling of the diffraction effects in the environment leads to significant under or overpredictions of the sound levels in some regions, as compared to conventional numerical methods (in these regions, some differences are as high as 10 dB). The implementation of the hybrid method, verified against a full FDTD model, shows a significant improvement of the predictions. The mean error thus obtained inside the cluttered region of the environment is 1.5 dB. / Master of Science

Cette thèse porte sur l'analyse de l'endommagement par fatigue et optimisation fiabiliste des structures soumises à des vibrations aléatoires. Le but de l'optimisation fiabiliste est de trouver le compromis entre le coût et la fiabilité. Plusieurs méthodes, telles que la méthode hybride et la méthode OSF ont été développées. Ces méthodes ont été appliquées dans des cas statiques et certains cas dynamiques spécifiques. Dans la réalité les structures sont soumises à des vibrations aléatoires qui peuvent provoquer un endommagement par fatigue. Dans cette thèse on présente la stratégie numérique de calcul de l'endommagement par fatigue dans le domaine fréquentiel et on propose une extension des méthodes RBDO dans le cas des structures soumises à des vibrations aléatoires. Aussi, une méthode RHM est développée. Enfin,une application industrielle qui porte sur la modélisation de la partie mécanique du banc HALT est présenté. / This thesis deals with the fatigue damage analysis and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) of structures under random vibrations. The purpose of an RBDO method is to find the best compromise between cost and safety. Several methods, such as Hybrid method and OSF method have been developed. These methods have been applied in static cases and some specific dynamic cases. In fact, structures are subject to random vibrations which can cause a fatigue damage. In this thesis we present the strategy of calculation of the fatigue damage based on the Sines criterion in the frequency domain developed in our laboratory. Then, an extension of the RBDO methods in the case of structures subjected to random vibrations is proposed. Also, an RHM method is developed. Finally, we present an industrial application where we propose a model of the mechanical part of the HALT chamber.

ealizaram-se cálculos ab initio e semi-empíricos em 5-hidrotriptofano (5-OH-trp), 7-aza-triptofano (7-aza-trp) e triptofano (trp), determinando as superfícies de energia potencial (SEP) do estado fundamental (EF) e do primeiro estado excitado (1EE), em função dos ângulos X IND. 1 e X IND. 2, medidos nos diedros N-C IND.alfa-C IND.beta-C IND.gama e C IND.alfa-C IND.beta-C IND.gama- C IND.delta2, respectivamente. Esses compostos foram estudados nos estados de protonação zwitteriônico, neutro e aniônico. A SEP do EF na forma zwitteriônica fo obtida pelo método semi-empírico AM1 e utilizada como referência para os cálculos ab initio. Os cálculos de 1EE foram feitos utilizando o método de Interação de Configurações com excitações simples (ICS) e orbitais internos congelados. As energias de transição entre o EF e o 1EE após as otimizações foram obtidas pelo método semi-empírico INDO/S-CIS, permitindo a obtenção dos espectros teóricos de absorção ótica, pelas energias de transição das geometrias otimizadas no EF, e de fluorescência de estado estacionário, pelas energias de transição das geometrias otimizadas no 1EE. Medidas experimentais dos espectros de absorção ótica e de fluorescência de estado estacionário e resolvida no tempo foram realizadas com o 5-OH-trp e o 7-aza-trp em solução tampão fosfato, pH 7,4. Os decaimentos fluorescentes ajustados a mais de uma exponencial foram estudados em termos das populações relativas de Boltzmann nos EF e 1EE. As taxas do decaimento não-radiativo de transferência de elétrons no 1EE foram obtidas pela implementação computacional da Teoria de Marcus e do Método da Expansão de Perturbação Renormalizada (EPR). Além disso, otimizações de estruturas de estados de transição (ET) na SEP dos 1EE foram realizadas pelo Método Sunchronous Transiti-Guided Quasi-Newton e pelo algoritmo de Berny modificado. Para aproximar as condições experimentais, foram ) realizadas simulações por dinâmica molecular (DM) usando o método híbrido QM/MM no EF do 5-OH-trp na forma zwitteriônica, na presença do solvente aquoso representado explicitamente. Os resultados obtidos dos cálculos ab initio foram usados como referência para o início dessas simulações. As conformações visitadas no EF, os espectros teóricos de absorção ótica e as camadas de solvatação do solvente aquoso em torno do reagente são discutidas. / Semi-empirical and ab-initio calculations were performed on 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-OH-trp), 7-aza-tryptophan (7-aza-trp) and tryptophan (trp). The potential energy surface (PES) of the ground state (GS) and the lowest exited state (1ES) was determined as a function X IND. 1 e X IND. 2 angles corresponding to the dihedrals N-C IND.alfa-C IND.beta-C IND.gama e C IND.alfa-C IND.beta-C IND.gama- C IND.delta2, respectively. The compounds were studied in the zwitterionic, neutral and anionic states. The PES of the GS was obtained using the AM1 semi-empirical method and was used as a reference for the ab-initio calculations. The configuration interaction method with single excitations (CIS) was used for the calculations of the 1ES with frozen internal orbitals. After geometry optimization of GS, the transition energies to 1ES were obtained by INDO/S-CIS, giving the theoretical optical absorption spectrum. Similarly, following the geometry optimization of 1ES, the transition energies to GS were determined, giving the fluorescence emission spectrum. Experimental results were obtained for optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of 5-OH-trp and 7-aza-trp in phosphate buffer solution, pH 7.4. The fluorescence decay of the compounds was also examined. Decay profiles fitted to multiexponential function were analyzed in terms of Boltzmann relative populations in the GS and 1ES. The non-radioactive electron transfer rates in the excited state were obtained by computational implementation of the Marcus Theory with renormalized perturbation expansion method (RPE). In this study, optimizations of the transition states in the PES of the ground and lower excited states were performed by the Synchronous Transit-Guided Quasi-Newton method and the Berny algorithm modified. For further comparison with experimental conditions, molecular dynamic simulations for the zwitterionic 5-OH-trp were performed using the hybrid QM/MM method with explicit representation of the aqueous solvent. To start the simulations the results from ab-initio calculations were used. The conformations for the GS, the theoretical absorption spectrum and the solvation layers were compared to the experimental results

Exploring the Use of Interactive Voice Response as a Population Health ToolCorkrey, Stephen Ross January 2003 (has links)
The research described in this thesis reviewed previous uses of Interactive Voice Response (IVR), developed appropriate software, and employed IVR to obtain self-report of sensitive issues in surveys and conduct brief public health interventions. Chapter 1 introduces IVR and describes a systematic critical review of the use of IVR. IVR is a telephone interviewing technique where the human speaker is replaced by a high quality recorded interactive script to which the respondent provides answers by pressing the keys of a touch-telephone (touchphone). IVR has numerous advantages, including: economy, autonomy, confidentiality, access to certain population groups, improved data quality, standardised interviewing, multi-lingual interfaces, and detailed longitudinal assessments. Despite this, there have been few survey applications of IVR compared to alternative methods such as Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI). There has not been any evaluation of the use of IVR for asking sensitive questions in surveys or as a tool for health promotion at the community level. A literature review, described in Chapter 2, was conducted to identify other methods of asking sensitive questions. The literature review identified 19 different methods. Those methods that were most successful were those that provided the greatest degree of anonymity to the respondent. It was suggested that IVR may be a suitable method for community surveys. As described in Chapter 3, a custom software called Generalized Electronic Interviewing System (GEIS) was developed. This provided both CATI and IVR interviewing modes. As described in Chapter 4, it was found that the response rate obtained using IVR was unacceptably low, and an alternative interviewing method, the Hybrid method was developed. In the Hybrid method the interview was initiated by the interviewer but completed using IVR with GEIS. As described in Chapter 5, the IVR, CATI and Hybrid methods were used to investigate self-reported rates of alcohol and drug consumption within a telephone household survey of 2880 households. The self-report rates were compared to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS). Response rates did not differ significantly between the CATI and Hybrid methods, however the response rate for IVR was significantly less than the other methods. The Hybrid and IVR methods obtained significantly higher self-report consumption rates for alcohol and marijuana, and significantly higher hazardous drinking scores using Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). In Chapter 6 a pilot of an IVR cervical screening brief advice interface is described. A total of 5000 households were contacted by the IVR system. The system randomly selected an eligible woman aged 18-69 per household and determined her cervical screening status. A total of 661 women listened to the IVR message. The IVR call was shown to be acceptable and inexpensive compared to a mail pamphlet intervention. In Chapter 7 a randomized controlled trial of an IVR cervical screening brief advice involving 17,008 households is described. Cervical screening rate data were obtained from the Health Insurance Commission (HIC) for a period spanning six months before and following the intervention. The cervical screening rate was increased in the intervention postcodes by 0.43% compared to the control postcodes, and the increase was greater for older women at 1.34%. This was a desirable outcome since this group is considered to be an at-risk group. The overall conclusion was that IVR technology could be feasibly used to contact women to deliver brief interventions aimed at increasing cervical screening rates, but the cost per screen was likely to be high. It is suggested that an IVR system could be linked to cervical screening registers to more directly and economically contact women, and provide an efficacious complementary approach to the existing letter reminder system. / PhD Doctorate

The first case corresponds to finding a fixed point of T which is closest to u from the fixed point set Fix(T). Both cases have received a lot of investigations recently.
