SME Performance and Its Relationship to InnovationAbouzeedan, Adli January 2011 (has links)
Current SME performance models suffer from a number of disadvantages. The models use intensively a business ratio approach, they look at SMEs as a homogenous group, they consider firms to be closed systems, they do not directly incorporate the impact of an enterprise’s innovation activities, and finally they are complex and rely on sophisticated statistical refining methods making them unpractical to use by SME managers. There are four major challenges when one tries to build SME performance models that lack these deficiencies. The first challenge is that the desired performance evaluation model must optimally incorporate both quantitative and qualitative input. The second challenge is that the model must incorporate non-financial input parameters, such as firm size and age (among others), in the performance evaluation models. The third is that the model must consider the variety of SMEs as concerns their business sectors, nationalities, sizes, and ages. The final challenge is that the model must be able to utilize existing limited information available from the SMEs bookkeeping practices in an optimal way. The thesis addresses three questions related to constructing a better SMEperformance model, namely (1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the existing models used in evaluating SME performance? (2) What characterizes a comprehensive model for measuring SME performance with acknowledgement of the firm’s innovation activities? (3) How can a firm’s innovation activities be enhanced in relation to the firm’s external environment? To construct a model that copes with these challenges, I used a literature-based selection of parameters as well as a theory-based selection. I used both a conceptual approach and an empirical approach to discuss and propose a model, the Survival Index Value (or SIV) model, as an alternative to the existing performance models for SMEs. The major contributions of this thesis to the field of SME performance can be summarized in three outcomes: the SIV model as a new model of SME performance evaluation, the ASPEM as a new tool for strategic utilization of SME performance models, and a new approach to account for innovation in relation to the external environment of the firm using the IBAM tool. The work adds to the theory of the firm, as it presents a new way of evaluating firm performance. It also contributes to bridging the theory of the firm to organizational theory, by elevating the significance of networking and its impact on SME efficiency.

Capital Taxation and Economic PerformanceZagler, Martin January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
A new technology is a bold new combination of production factors that potentially yields a higher level of total factor productivity. The optimal combination of input factors is unknown when an innovation is pursued. A larger targeted innovation may require a greater change in the optimal combination of production factors employed and increases volatility alongside with economic growth. We show that economic policy can interfere in this relationship with by adjusting source based capital income taxes. / Series: Discussion Papers SFB International Tax Coordination

策略性人力資本之衡量與價值之創造-以智慧型手機製造業為例 / The Measurement of Strategic Human Capital and Value Creation-A case study of Smartphone Manufacturer成昀達, Cheng, Yun Ta Unknown Date (has links)
The measurement of human capital is always a crucial part of intellectual capital issue. However, researchs and discussions both are focus on the “static” and “historical” data analysis in the past. It is bounded to provide timely, appropriate information to assist management formulating strategy and making decisions. This study is aim to improve the weakness of statistical human capital’s information and establish the forward-looking forecasting scheme to measure enterprise’s performance.
This study select one smartphone manufacturer in Taiwan as an sample, by adopting the method of case study, we collect public information and deeply analyze the various factors about strategic human capital, including the heterogeneity of team member by functional attributes and by educational disciplines. We integrate strategic human capital data with customer capital and innovation capital, measure enterprise’s performance in input, management and output aspects both in quantitative and qualitative method simultaneously, and create the value of combination with these intellectual capitals. Then make the following conclusions:
First, the strategy always will seriously affect the meaning and value of human capital.
Second, the determination and attitude of management will influence the validity and efficiency of strategy.
Third, the higher heterogeneity of team member in functional attributes has positive help when developing innovative strategies.
Fourth, the lower heterogeneity of team member in educational disciplines has positive help to centralize business resources, focus on specific strategy, and increase the strength of product development and technology innovation.

Accounting and innovation: evidence from external disclosure and internal management control systemsBellora, Lucia 13 August 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is composed of three research papers that deal with the topic of “accounting and innovation” and provide evidence for the area of innovation from two accounting perspectives, i.e., the external disclosure perspective and the internal management control system perspective.
The disclosure perspective is addressed in the first paper. Using content analysis, it examines the innovation capital disclosure characteristics, i.e., disclosure quantity and quality, in intellectual capital statements of 51 European for-profit firms. Additionally, the relationship between innovation capital disclosure characteristics and industry, firm size, region of domicile, and disclosure guidelines adopted are analyzed.
The second and third paper address the management control system perspective. The second paper contributes to the research on management control systems in product development by exploring the performance effects and the interplay of the levers of control, i.e., interactive, diagnostic, beliefs, and boundary control systems, based on data from a survey of 468 senior managers from the manufacturing industry. Therefore, I compare by structural equation modeling a base model of unrelated levers of control (additive model) with (a) a model of mutual association of levers of control (interdependence model), (b) a model of joint use of levers of control (interaction model), and (c) a combined model of mutual association and joint use of levers of control (combined interdependence/interaction model). The best fitting and most parsimonious model is analyzed in terms of the performance effects of the levers of control.
Based on the sample of the second paper, the third paper contributes to the recent literature on the relationship between management control systems and innovation by considering how the four levers of control are used as “packages” in product development. I employ cluster analysis to determine how the levers of control are combined, depending on the type of strategy formation (i.e., intended or emergent) and the degree of innovativeness of the firm. Furthermore, I explore which of these combinations are equifinal in terms of product development and organizational performance.
