The use of Internet-based communication in support of long-term customer relationships in a period of corporate change

The research addressed the factors contributing to the success or failure of an Internet-based communication web site in assisting business-to-business companies to create, establish and/or enhance sustainable customer relationships. To achieve the outcome, a web site was designed, developed, delivered and evaluated to assist a business-to-business company to create, establish and enhance a sustainable corporate image as perceived by their primary clients. The design, development and evaluation of the web site consisted of the following sub-processes:  A review of relevant literature: firstly to reflect upon communication through the wired world, and secondly to determine how the information revolution influences the way people think, work and live.  A survey of the literature dealing specifically with new strategic marketing perspectives, in order to identify the demands placed on a company's business strategy by the new strategic marketing perspectives, and to determine what these strategies are.  A survey of the literature dealing with information design and the web usability of Internet-¬based programmes with a view to designing and developing a web site for a business-to¬ business company which complied with various design specifications that influence the effectiveness and accessibility thereof.  Finally, designing and evaluating the web site to identify potential usability problems. The three evaluation methods used were paper prototyping, machine prototyping and usability testing. The rationale being to identify major usability problems and to obtain measure from intended users and a usability expert on the effectiveness, efficiency and user-interface satisfaction of the web site. The web site was used as basis for compiling a survey questionnaire to test the degree to which respondents strongly agreed or disagreed with statements on the following features of the web site:  Communication  Relationship building  Customer service  Design  Usability The questionnaire also covered aspects on computer and Internet usage experience, access and literacy of the respondents. The survey questionnaire was sent to the target population of primary clients of the participating company, the group of intended end users. The empirical results obtained indicated that employing good information architecture that is based on customers' needs, as well as the iterative development of a web site could assist a business-to-business company to create, establish and enhance a sustainable corporate image as perceived by their primary clients. / Thesis (DPhil (Information Science))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Information Science / unrestricted

Corporate communication and online-PR : current application and best practices

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / The following work gives an overview about the current situation of online-PR and develops a best-practice guide for corporate communication on the internet. The scope of online-PR as covered in this research project encompasses PR tools shaped through the technology of the internet - from communication applications to applications for the distribution and sharing of information - which are used in the communication between an organization and its stakeholders. After giving an introduction into the objectives and methods of PR, the differences between traditional and online-PR are described. This first chapter is followed by an introduction into the online communication ecosphere where the different kinds of communication and information distribution platforms on the internet are described. The third chapter analyses devices, software applications and standards relevant to online-PR. Following this summary a best-practice guide is developed to help PR practitioners in optimizing online-PR efforts using the described tools (e.g. email newsletter, weblogs). The empirical part of the work consists of a survey in which PR practitioners were asked to disclose their current knowledge and application of online-PR and to give their opinion about future trends in online-PR. The results of the observations were analysed and a comparison was drawn between the best-practices and their practical application. This work closes with a summary of the results, a conclusion and a view into the future. There were two main findings identified in the theoretical analysis as well as through the empirical observations: First the PR environment is becoming increasingly complex and faster through the emergence of internet technology and the only way for PR practitioners to keep up with this development lies in the utilization of sophisticated and internet-based means of communication. The second finding was that internet innovations are reshaping the traditional media environment and the way news is created and thereby making online-PR essential in reaching and influencing company's stakeholders effectively and efficiently.

Denna explorativa studie analyserar gemensamma och differentiella mönster för kommunikation och beteende hos användare i Hjälpforum. Målet med studien är att kartlägga aktiva användartyper med syfte att ge SVT kunskap om Hjälpforumets användare. Om forumadministratörer har mer kunskap om användarna i Hjälpforum kan de anpassa sin kommunikation utifrån användarnas individuella behov och öka deras förmåga att bidra med mer kvalitativ återkoppling. Detta kan i sin tur bidra till en positivare inställning och ökat förtroende hos användare i Hjälpforum. I denna studie kunde fem användartyper kartläggas i Hjälpforum med stöd av egen empiri och tidigare forskning. Nybörjare utgör främsta användartypen i Hjälpforum och SVT bör därför tillgodose deras behov för att eventuellt minska antalet nya användarinlägg. Dessutom kunde denna studie med hjälp av lämpliga databearbetningsverktyg kartlägga, en för tillfället, okänd användartyp i Hjälpforum utifrån ovanliga mönster i beteende och kommunikation vilket kan vara intressant för vidare analys. Studien presenterar förslag på hur resultatet kan användas för att skapa riktlinjer för framtida kommunikation och utveckling av Hjälpforum och SVT:s webbplats. / This exploratory study analyzes the common and differential patterns of communication and behavior of users in Help Forum. The goal of the study is to map the active user types with the aim of providing SVT knowledge of the Help Forum users. If the forum administrators have more knowledge of the users in the forum, they can adapt their communication based on the individual needs and enhance their ability to contribute more qualitative feedback. This may in turn contribute to a more positive attitude and greater confidence among users in Help Forum. In this study, five types of users could be identified in the Forum with the support of its own empirical data and previous research. Beginners are primary user type in the forum and SVT should cater to their needs in order to possibly reduce the number of new user posts. Furthermore, this study using appropriate data processing tool map, one for the moment, unknown user type in the forum by unusual patterns of behavior and communication which may be of interest for further analysis. The study presents suggestions on how the results can be used to create guidelines for future communication and development of Help Forum and SVT's website.

Speed, accuracy and simplicity make search engines, today, essential tools in the life of the modern and connected human being, thus creating a dependency of them in the man’s life. The objective of this research is to draw a historical line, addressing the main technologies and scientists involved in the technological development that resulted in the search engines. To do so, this research relies on a solid bibliographic review of books and articles about technology and communication, as well as magazines and reports about the subjects involved. The result of the research culminated in a technological perspective, based on the facts and technologies presented, of an integrated search engine that may become part of the human daily life soon. / Em tempos onde o uso da internet e da web se faz cada vez mais presente na vida do ser humano, observa-se a crescente ascensão dos mecanismos de busca no dia a dia das pessoas, resolvendo problemas como a simples tarefa de se localizar uma partitura musical ou ainda elaborados artigos científicos. A velocidade, acurácia e simplicidade fazem dos mecanismos de busca, hoje, ferramentas essenciais na vida do ser humano moderno e conectado, criando assim uma dependência dos mesmos na vida do homem. O objetivo desta pesquisa é traçar uma linha histórica, abordando as principais tecnologias e cientistas envolvidos no desenvolvimento tecnológico que resultou nos mecanismos de busca. Para tanto, esta pesquisa se apoia em uma revisão bibliográfica sólida em livros e artigos sobre tecnologia e comunicação, bem como revistas e reportagens sobre os assuntos envolvidos. O resultado da pesquisa culminou em uma perspectiva tecnológica, baseada nos fatos e tecnologias apresentados, de um mecanismo de busca integrado, que poderá se tornar parte do cotidiano humano em um futuro não muito distante.

Diploma thesis "E-commerce" aimed to create a suitable solution for marketing mix of the e-shop Levneelektro.cz. Based on performed analyzes I concluded that improvement of a communication with customers is very important for company ELEKTRA PV. I found that a crucial step for maintenance of competitiveness is the foundation of a loyalty program which is responsible for keeping customer loyalty. I have designed two different solutions of the loyalty program that are appropriate for the company.
