Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte: Virtuelle Maschinen: zSeries- und S/390-Partitionierung

von Buttlar, Joachim, Spruth, Wilhelm G. 05 December 2018 (has links)
The capability to run multiple guest operating systems simultaneously on a single hardware platform is a powerful feature in a modern computer system.Well-known examples are VMware for the IA32-architecture and the z/VM operating system and the PR/SM-LPAR facilities of the zSeries architecture. Running an operating system as a guest results in a performance degradation. Partitioning of system resources and assigning them to individual guests may be difficult, if a dynamic adaptation to an ever changing load profile is required. Extensions of the hardware architecture and their exploitation by software permit to address these problems. Such extensions have not been available on existing architectures like IA32 or Mips. The following paper discusses the operation of guest operating systems and associated partitioning capabilities available in zSeries systems and describes supporting hardware and software facilities.

La répression discriminatoire des infractions liées à la sexualité en droit pénal irakien / The discriminatory repression of sex-related crime in Iraqi criminal law

Gaznai, Safaa Aldden 20 October 2011 (has links)
This Ph.D. dissertation examines how Iraqi criminal law with regard to sex and sex-related crimes severely discriminates women in Iraq. It looks at this issue in light of ancestral traditions of prejudice and violence against women that are deeply rooted in Iraqi society. Honor is an extremely important notion in the mentalities of Iraqi people. Women are supposed to maintain chastity and sexual purity in order to be considered "honorable". Anything that compromises their chastity, including crimes of which they are victims such as rape, destroys their honor and along with it, that of their entire family. Many women in this situation find themselves killed, injured, or forced to marry their attacker in order to allow their families to recover their honor. This study shows how Iraqi legislation, case law and legal doctrine all contribute to encourage and perpetuate this problem, and suggests some possible solutions.

Provenance and Depositional History of Late Pleistocene New Jersey Shelf Sediments

Turner, Roxie Jessica 12 May 2005 (has links)
Pleistocene New Jersey shelf sedimentology is strongly influenced by glacially driven sea level changes. A combination of regressive shoreline processes, subaerial exposure, fluvial downcutting, and deposition and reworking during transgression has influenced the NJ shelf sediment composition. Sediment provenance and transport history may be determined on a shelf environment through analysis of grain size distribution, heavy mineral content, magnetic mineral concentrations, and isotopic dating methods. A combination of surface grab and stratigraphic samples were analyzed within the study area. Relatively high percentages of heavy minerals were found in the 2 phi and 3 phi size fractions and hornblende grains provided K-Ar age values indicating two groups of sediment sources. The first source is Grenville with apparent ages above 900 Ma deposited during marine OIS 1. The second source is a mixed assemblage of Grenvillian and Paleozoic sources deposited during marine OIS 3, with apparent ages of approximately 850 ± 20 Ma.

Sitting on the bench : an exploratory study into Inland Revenue's industry benchmarking programme.

Shipton, David Edward Charles January 2015 (has links)
The Inland Revenue Department (Inland Revenue) launched the Industry Benchmarking Programme (Benchmarking Programme) in 2011; which closely followed the Small Business Benchmarking Programme (SBBP) which was released by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in 2009. These programmes took data from tax returns and other sources, and turn this into a series of financial benchmarks for specific industries. The data from these programmes was then published on the respective websites of Inland Revenue and the ATO. It was envisaged by both tax administrations that this data would be used by taxpayers to benchmark their financial performance against others in their industry. The Benchmarking Programme was designed to assist Inland Revenue with its compliance strategy and to better its their audits. This exploratory research was mainly focused on the use (or lack of) of Inland Revenue’s Benchmarking Programme by taxpayers and tax practitioners. Other aspects of the Benchmarking Programme were investigated. Interviews with six tax practitioners were conducted, supplemented by documentary analysis of the Benchmarking Programme and other sources of data. It was found that the tax practitioners do not use the data for several reasons, including issues with the integrity of the data and its usefulness. It suggested that taxpayers do not use the data from the Benchmarking Programme, and indeed may not have any knowledge of it. The overall impact of the Benchmarking Programme was deemed to be minimal. Several recommendations were to be presented for consideration by Inland Revenue as a result of the findings in the project.

Comparing Single-Case Design Non-Overlap Metrics and Visual Analysis Examining School-Based Interventions for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Alresheed, Fahad 11 January 2019 (has links)
High prevalence of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the legislation movement impacted the placement of students with ASD in general education settings. Hence, the increase raised the need to conduct research for ASD populations, and to examine the effectiveness of these interventions. With the increase of single case-design (SCD) studies, there is a demand to include SCD in the evaluation of evidence- based practices (EBPs), to analyze and interpret SCD results in meaningful ways beside visual analysis, and to generate effect size estimates. This dissertation contains four systematic literature reviews which examine single-case intervention research targeting academic, social communication, play, and functional life skills for children with ASD in school settings. 132 studies with 924 AB phase contrasts were analyzed using visual analysis and three non-overlap measures. Sensitivity and specificity of Tau-U, IRD, and Baseline Corrected Tau were tested on detecting intervention effects. Also, the three methods were examined in their agreement with interpretations based on the visual analysis and the effect of confounding factor on their scores. The analysis demonstrated that the three methods performed fairly well in distinguishing effective from non-effective interventions. The three non-overlap methods had a moderate to substantial level of agreement with visual analysis. The author recommended further research on the impact of confounding factors especially baseline trend and autocorrelation as well as the use of effect size methods with high sensitivity and visual aids to improve the reliability and accuracy of visual analysis.

Countering Communist and Nasserite propaganda : the Foreign Office Information Research Department in the Middle East and Africa, 1954-1963

Collier, Simon M. W. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis considers the role of the Information Research Department (IRD) in countering Arab nationalist and Communist propaganda directed at British interests in the Middle East and Africa between 1954 and 1963. It argues that the 1956 Suez Crisis and its fallout was the catalyst that drove a significant expansion of IRD's remit and responsibility. From 1956 the department – which up to this point had had a purely anti-Communist function – was given the responsibility of countering the increasing flow of Arab nationalist propaganda emerging from Egypt. The same year, the Communist powers mounted a renewed and concerted effort to culturally and ideologically penetrate Africa. IRD, who to this point had been excluded from directly operating in Africa, began counter-Communist work in the face of stiff Colonial Office resistance. Analysis of IRD in the Middle East has rarely considered events beyond the immediate aftermath of Suez. IRD's work in Africa is almost wholly unexplored. It is a central contention of this thesis that the two regions cannot be viewed in isolation post-Suez. Egypt's standing was buoyed by the propaganda capital of victory over Suez, and Nasser's position as the figurehead of Arab nationalism was assured. In seeking the removal of colonial influence from the Middle East and Africa, Arab propaganda – particularly the Voice of the Arabs programme of Cairo Radio – ties the regions together. Communist and African nationalist propagandists were drawn to Cairo in the wake of the Suez Crisis. The former, building relationships through aid, sought to leverage Cairo's expanding influence to their own advantage. The latter sought facilities and support for their own propaganda efforts. After Suez, IRD sought to manage Egyptian propaganda whilst avoiding direct confrontation, seeking to normalise relations. In Africa, the department sought to build an infrastructure for information work aimed at influencing future leaders, their efforts constrained by the timetable of British decolonisation. In both regions, through developing relationships with local agencies and the BBC, and from initiatives such as the Transmission 'X' news commentary service, IRD continued to address Arab nationalist and Communist propaganda with a flexibility and responsiveness not recognised in the current literature on IRD.

Exploring Pathogenic Mutations at Phosphorylation Sites through a Peptide-Based Proteomics Screen

Rrustemi, Trëndelina 10 October 2024 (has links)
Approximately 20% of disease-linked point mutations are situated within protein regions devoid of 3D structure, known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs). IDRs harbour short linear motifs (SLiMs) that mediate protein-protein interactions (PPIs), often through post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation. Investigating the impact of these IDR mutations on protein-protein interactions is essential to comprehend human diseases. In this doctoral thesis, I present a comprehensive exploration of a peptide-based proteomics screen, employed to study 36 disease-associated mutations that impair phosphorylation sites within IDRs. This approach, uses immobilized synthetic peptides, corresponding to the mutated regions, to capture interacting proteins from cellular extracts. This method facilitated the simultaneous comparison of interaction partners among wild-type, phosphorylated, and mutated peptide forms, enabling the functional assessment of individual mutations. Our analysis uncovered significant disparities between the interactomes of phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated peptides. Building on our findings, we placed particular emphasis on the S102P mutation within the transcription factor GATAD1, a mutation associated with dilated cardiomyopathy. Our screening demonstrated that this mutation disrupts a phosphorylation site responsible for 14-3-3 protein binding. To delve deeper into this interaction, we conducted a thorough investigation, employing techniques such as isothermal titration calorimetry, X-ray crystallography, and alanine scanning coupled with mass spectrometry. Our analyses hinted at the regulatory role of 14-3-3 binding in GATAD1's nucleocytoplasmic transport, achieved by masking its nuclear localization signal. The insights from our research shed fresh light on potential molecular mechanisms underpinning the development of various human diseases, offering a promising avenue for further investigation and therapeutic exploration.

A qualitative study of the competencies that should be covered by a specialised undergraduate degree in risk management

De Swardt, Cecilia Jacoba 02 1900 (has links)
Purpose The purpose of the research was firstly, to determine the competencies required of risk managers and secondly, to consider the implications of such competencies in determining possible modules for inclusion in the design of a specialised undergraduate qualification in Risk Management. Methodology A qualitative research approach was followed, involving focus group interview sessions as part of an Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) research study. Focus Group 1 comprised of academics teaching risk management at public universities in South Africa, and Focus Group 2 comprised of risk management practitioners in South Africa. Findings The competencies identified are business management and risk management knowledge; attributes such as assertiveness and courage; values such as ethics and integrity; as well as people, business and technical skills. Research implications The unique contribution of the current research was the innovative use of IQA for data collection, the removal of subjectivity and the rigour in analysing and presenting the results. The results are a starting point or foundation for the design of a specialised undergraduate degree in risk management that will both meet the requirements of the risk management profession and will equip learners with the best possible combination of knowledge, skills, attributes, values and attitudes to effectively manage risk in organisations. The implications for further research are that a study of the design, benchmarking and validation of a curriculum framework for a specialised undergraduate degree in risk management could be conducted. The development of a curriculum framework or curriculum did not form part of the scope of this study. / Okokuqala inhloso yocwaningo, ukuthola amakhono adingekayo kubaphathi bezinhlekelele kanti okwesibili, ukubheka imiphumela yalokho kusebenza ekunqumeni amamojuli angafakwa ekwakhiweni kweziqu ezikhethekile ezingakaphothulwa ngabafundi ku-Risk Management.
